Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

About Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd Album

The band entered Abbey Road Studios during the first week of 1975 to begin recording on their follow-up to Dark Side of the Moon. In the previous year, they introduced three new pieces to European audiences during the first sets of each show. Two of them, "Raving and Drooling" & "You Gotta Be Crazy", were ultimately not recorded for Wish You Were Here, but re-shaped and recorded in 1976 for the Animals album as respectively "Sheep" and "Dogs". The third would take shape as the album's centerpiece, "Shine on You Crazy Diamond". During tour rehearsals for the previous year's French summer tour, David Gilmour came up with the signature 4-note theme and the piece took shape from there. With the memory of former front-man/singer-songwriter/guitarist Syd Barrett fresh in his mind, Roger Waters wrote the lyrics as a tribute to his fallen friend, at the time already an reclusive figure. In 1974, it would be performed as one uninterrupted piece. However, during the band's tour of North America the following year, it would be split in two parts, sandwiching another new song, "Have a Cigar". A funky guitar-driven piece, it would ultimately be sung on the final recorded version by Roy Harper, as Roger's voice was in poor shape. This song, and the ominous "Welcome to the Machine" were written reflecting the band's negative attitude towards the record industry. They also (with various instrumental parts of "Shine On") feature synthesizers in a stronger fashion than previous albums, as well as the sound effects (provided by Nick Mason) that are signature to the Floyd sound. The title track took shape when Gilmour came to the studio and showed the band the chord sequence, which suitably impressed Waters. He then wrote the lyrics, referring to Syd Barrett's departure and Roger's own growing alienation from his band and from other people (these themes later on would become essential to his story of The Wall). More than any previous Floyd number, it has a very prominent Country & Western feel to the instrumentation (pedal steel guitar and acoustic piano) and the melancholy feel to the lyrics. It would eventually become one of the band's signature songs, and is as of now (May of 2009) the band's most scrobbled song on Last.fm. Towards the end of the recording process, a stranger who at first looked unfamiliar to the band and the engineers appeared in the studio. After much discussion of who it was, the band slowly recognized him as the man whose story and personal relationship with the group had heavily influenced the record, Syd Barrett. Each member was unsure of what song they were mixing, but urban legend has it that it was "Shine On", which adds a new and deep personal resonance to the already emotional piece. Subsequently Syd disappeared from sight, as the band members attended David Gilmour's wedding ceremony that night. That was the last time any member of Pink Floyd had personal contact with their former enigmatic leader. The record was released in the Fall of 1975, the band's first on Columbia Records (in the United States, EMI was and remained the Floyd's International label). It became the fastest selling record of their career, topping both the American (certified Gold within two days of it's release and ultimately 6X Multi-Platinum in May 1997 by the R.I.A.A.) and U.K. album charts (Gold within the year, but has yet to achieve Platinum status). The band themselves hold the album in high artistic regard, despite the negative and disconnected environment during recording, with both Gilmour and Rick Wright saying it was their favorite. It was the last of their albums in which Rick played an important role in composing the music (making significant keyboard contributions on "Shine On"), until nearly 20 years later with The Division Bell. On the band's next three albums, the lions share of the song-writing credit would go to Roger Waters. This, in part with the deteriorating relationship between the band, would cause Roger to leave in 1985, ten years after Wish You Were Here. Tracklist 1. - Well

It's pretty good

- Another absolute masterpiece

Who the hell is Mickey Raww? How can anyone listen to this astoni9shing album and conclude it is BAD? Dude has to be in a class by himself. My GRANDMOTHER likes this album. My GRANDSON likes this album. I've been playing it since 1975 and none of the tracks bore me yet. This is a classic's classic. My opinion is it is better that Dark Side...Play it once and make up youir own mind. Mickey Raww is the first guy I've come across in 43 years who has a negative opinion of the album. I can't imagine what he listens to, but that's my opinion. Wish you were Here is a great album. That is a monstrous understatement.

- 🤝

No word can describe this album but perfect

- This guys review

This is one of the greatest albums ever mist get

- Unforgettable Music

Loved this when it was released and it still holds up today.

- Whoa

What a great album! I've known Wish You Were Here for years. But now, Shine On is my favorite Floyd song! Gilmour and Wright ROCKED IT! PINK FLOYD FOREVER

- SHINE!

Amazing masterpiece of an album. I can’t decide which album I like better between Dark Side and this but Shine on you crazy diamond is my favorite Floyd song and it’s not even close. Sit back, close your eyes, turn up the volume, and drift away into a calm serenity listening to it.

- An Amazing Journey

This is one of the best albums, let alone Floyd albums ever. It's for everyone, the Prog Rock nerds and casual listeners (although to them Shine on You Crazy Diamond might be a little much). It combines the ethereal, the psychedelic, the beautiful, and the thoughtful. I definite must listen and definitely better than Dark Side.

- Pink Floyd Will Always Shine On

Not only do I think this is Pink Floyd's best album, I think this is one of the greatest albums of all time, and the perfect starting point for anyone who wants to embark on the journey that is the Pink Floyd discography. The music is masterful and the lyrics will teach you something new each time. This album is a true 10/10.

- Nice Followup

Not as good as Dark Side but has in my opinion their best song, Wish You Were Here.

- Soothes the soul

Music to wash away the days stress

- Prog Rock Masterpiece

Brilliant compositions. Listen to it in order and all the way through.

- Best of the best

This has to be their best work of art ever. I could listen to shine on you crazy diamond every day. It has such a calming feeling it gives you best song ever💍

- 5

Can't hate on pink Floyd but do hate the price if I wanted to buy all the albums.

- Pink Floyd

I love this song so much

- Masterpiece

This album doesn’t get the recognition it deserves because it was released directly after “Dark Side.” This album truly is perfect.

- Best of the best!

The best.

- Hey Oklahomakml

LMin Up but llama o I’mlij

- Their best

Best album by Pink Floyd. Shine on you crazy diamond is the greatest song ever written hands down!!!!!

- Brit Floyd

After watching these amazing artists Who gathered for one last time for Live 8 Concert back 2005 on U tube, I was stumbled to a performance in Livermore park as a tribute to Pink Floyd by Brit Floyd ! Catch it on U tube. .. They have the audacity of being amazing!!! Opening song ; Welcome to Machine Inspired me to get this album off the shelf

- Best of the band

Thoughtful and inspiring, this album shines like a crazy diamond

- Excellent Sound Quality

Let me start by saying that I do still have my vinyl copy, I had it on 8 track, cassette and finally on CD. That being said the question for me wasn't is this an album I should get because it is great, but rather, is the sound quality any better than the CD copy that I have transfered to my iTunes library that has a very muddy sound? Well I am here to say that YES it is remarkably better, a huge improvement over my CD copy. I also got Dark Side Of The Moon for the same reason and I am not disappointed. Who ever is incharge of Apple's Re-Mastering did a GREAT job. So if you are like me and already own all the previous lesser quality versions you will not be wasting your money if you purchase this copy.

- Beautifully creepy

This album is, as the kids on the internet say, the G.O.A.T I would give this album 100 stars if I could. 🔥🔥🔥

- Loved It

Anyone who didn’t like this album, you’re crazy. I may have to buy the vinyl cuz it’s that good. My favorite song definitely “Shine Like a Crazy Diamond “ (all the parts) and “Welcome to the Machine” and “Wish You Were Here” I have definitely started going back and listening to more and more music from this group. Pink Floyd is true greatness.

- One of the GOATs

Has anybody ever made music so passionate, smart, and cold at the same time?

- yep

yeh

- One of their best albums!!!

This is one of the best Pink Floyd albums and it has their best song in my opinion wish you were here

- Perfect

- Do not buy

I positively hate the idea of "iTunes LPs". Forget your iPhones or tablets for replay. I bought this album thinking that "Album Only" refers to the availability of the tracks "Shine on pt 1-5 and 6-9" in conjunction with the Album. This in and by itself is outrageous, because typically some bonus material /additional songs should be "Album only" if one buys the entire album. But OK - I can accept that because I wanted the entire album anyway. BUT NO! You can only PLAY the instrumental songs through iTunes Album, you can not add them to playlists or move them to your iPhone. For example a playlist with only the instrumental pieces (which I had in mind) is NOT possible. iTune forces me to buy a CD in a store or to go to their competition, because an alternative form of the Album (regular single songs of all songs on the album is not available. Your loss. The only positive - the iTunes representative reimbursed me quickly and without any discussion. Very courteous response. Still - make sure you understand what" iTunes LP" means before you buy. It's not spelled out clearly.

- The Seventies Superstars: Pink Floyd

I grew up in high school and college listening to Pink Floyd and still do. They are one of the most original bands and their psychedelic rock style appeals to a lot of people, me included. They are one of my favorite classic rock bands and will never go out of style, especially their best albums. This is one of them. Enjoy their great sound and lyrics. They are a masterpiece!

- Greta album

Although not as strong as the Dark side of the Moon. This album is a testament to how truly great this was actually was. This was a more focused than The Dark Side of the Moon to the people that I would consider this one of the greatest albums ever made. Pink Floyd is a truly one of a kind band and there will never be a band like them ever again. This band shall live on.

- Flawless

Unbelievable. Pink Floyd never fails to impress

- Best of the Best

Pink Floyd has been my inspiration and motivation to this day .. Wish you were here 😍

- An undeniable masterpiece

Simply put, one of the best albums ever made.

- Awesome sauce :)

This is a good album. I may agree partially that it is not the best of the best Floyd album, but Wish you Were Here is a pretty good song with the acoustic and all. Mickey raww, why would you comment on an album if you don’t like it? Just comment on your bad music because I bet if you think Floyd is bad then what you listen to is worse. Pink Floyd is one of the best bands of all time. Even though it already passed 14 years, it is sad that Syd died :(. I’m 12. I also like pt. 1 of another brick in the wall. I honestly think it is better than pt. 2. Both are good though. Just my thoughts. It’s all rock and roll to me though. 🎸 🤘🏻

- garbage

COULD BE THE WORST ALBUM EVER RELEASED ITS THAT BAD MAN.

- The first song means the most

I stared guitar almost a year ago and I wanted to play Wish you were here and I’ve almost mastered the song and every time I here it no mater where or when I sing along to it and it means a lot to me and this is definitely there best album

- Not their best, but still good

I don't know why people say it's their best album because it isn't. Dark Side Of The Moon is their best album. Along with The Wall. However, it's still good and I recommend it for any Pink Floyd fans.

- Terrific

This album is an all time classic, coupled with its tragic figure Syd ..their very haunting and operatic compositions. As for reviewer Raw?? Well he’s either deep into rap and/or has no comprehension nor understanding of true musicianship, unable to appreciate musical virtuoso’s that have mastered their instruments as opposed to drum machines and over-dubbing....

- ❤️

❤️

- Voila

Absolutely amazing. This is real music.

- Best hits!

Loving it

- Arrian & Arrial

Will be taking this album to my grave

- Oh my

It was and is a magnificent album. If you know the history (Syd), “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” is an incredible tribute…and social commentary. And the lyrics on “Wish You Were Hear” are timeless. “Have a Cigar” and “Welcome to the Machine” are merely outstanding. As much as I like “Dark Side…” and “Animals”, this album stands out, not only as Pink Floyd’s best, but as one of Rock ‘n Roll’s seminal albums.

- And the album cover is so cool !

Every song is Classic. Ya, there's only 5 songs, but come on, this and Dark Side are my top 2 and then the wall. All Great stuff. Wish you we're here one of my all time favorites.

- IMO Better than Dark Side of the Moon

This album is one of the greatest creations that has befell the classic rock era. Every song is so powerful, so meaningful, and has such depth and creativity. The track opens up with the elegant magnum opus Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a two part (technically nine parts) tribute to their former band member and friend Syd Barrett, who coincidentally visited the studio during the sessions for this song. This song is my personal favorite Pink Floyd song of all time, and I've listened to everything, and currently it is my favorite song of all time. Next is the beautiful and dark "Welcome to the Machine," the first song I've ever listened to by the band and my entry point into classic rock. Here is a song telling us about the corrupt music industry, which is much relatable to the rocker "Have a Cigar." This song has guest vocals by Roy Harper, and he sounds perfect for this type of song. This segues into the beautiful Wish You Were Here, another ode to Syd Barrett, before closing out to the second part of Shine On (which the initials to every other word spells out Syd). Again, this is my favorite Pink Floyd album, a great entry point, and I recommend it to anyone and everyone. 11/10!!!

- Simply perfect

Of all the Pink Floyd albums there are, Wish You Were Here has got to be the very best. If you are new to Pink Floyd sit back and listen to this album from start to end. I wish I could hear this album for the very first time all over again and be overwhelmed by its beauty and simplicity. I’ve bought this album in almost every decade (tape, LP, CD, iTunes) since it came out. Enjoy it’s brilliance!!

- Parts 6-9

In all my dreams, in all my fantasies there is a song that permiates the fabric of time. Shine On Parts 6-9 is that spine tingling sound, the sound that makes me shiver and cry at the thought of what could be.

- Phenomenal

Hard to come back with an album after Dark Side of the Moon. But they did, and what a masterpiece.

- Wtf

Where's the rest of it?

- L'amour fou

Wish you where here ☄️Sans doute une des meilleurs chansons de ce vaste et parfois si triste monde 🌎L'album est assurément un must à avoir pour s'évader quelque part où l'on peut rêver et s'évader 🌦Love Jérémie 💙

- Put simply, a Masterpiece

One of my favourite albums.
