Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow

About Blow By Blow by Jeff Beck Album

Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow Blow by Blow is a solo album by British electric guitarist Jeff Beck. The Epic Records release, recorded in October 1974, was released in 1975. Considered one of his best releases, former Yardbirds sideman Chris Dreja had predicted in 1965 that Beck's current sound "...was 1975." In a glowing review on Allmusic, Mark Kirschenmann said that Blow by Blow ranks as one of the premiere recordings in the canon of instrumental rock music. As an all-instrumental album it was a surprising commercial success, with a jazz fusion-like approach seldom seen on best-selling lists at the time. It was certified gold in 1976. The album was produced by George Martin and recorded at his own AIR studios. Martin also composed string arrangements for two of the tracks, Scatterbrain and Diamond Dust. As a big admirer of fellow guitarist Roy Buchanan, Beck dedicated the track Cause We've Ended as Lovers to him. Allmusic review by Mark Kirschenmann Blow by Blow typifies Jeff Beck's wonderfully unpredictable career. Released in 1975, Beck's fifth effort as a leader and first instrumental album was a marked departure from its more rock-based predecessors. Only composer/keyboardist Max Middleton returned from Beck's previous lineups. To Beck's credit, Blow by Blow features a tremendous supporting cast. Middleton's tasteful use of the Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and analog synthesizers leaves a soulful imprint. Drummer Richard Bailey is in equal measure supportive and propulsive as he deftly combines elements of jazz and funk with contemporary mixed meters. Much of the album's success is also attributable to the excellent material, which includes Middleton's two originals and two collaborations with Beck, a clever arrangement of Lennon and McCartney's "She's a Woman," and two originals by Stevie Wonder. George Martin's ingenious production and string arrangements rival his greatest work. Beck's versatile soloing and diverse tones are clearly the album's focus, and he proves to be an adept rhythm player. Blow by Blow is balanced by open-ended jamming and crisp ensemble interaction as it sidesteps the bombast that sank much of the jazz-rock fusion of the period. One of the album's unique qualities is the sense of fun that permeates the performances. On the opening "You Know What I Mean," Beck's stinging, blues-based soloing is full of imaginative shapes and daring leaps. On "Air Blower," elaborate layers of rhythm, duel lead, and solo guitars find their place in the mix. Propelled by the galvanic rhythm section, Beck slashes his way into "Scatterbrain," where a dizzying keyboard and guitar line leads to more energetic soloing from Beck and Middleton. In Stevie Wonder's ballad "Cause We've Ended as Lovers," Beck variously coaxes and unleashes sighs and screams from his guitar in an aching dedication to Roy Buchanan. Middleton's aptly titled "Freeway Jam" best exemplifies the album's loose and fun-loving qualities, with Beck again riding high atop the rhythm section's wave. As with "Scatterbrain," Martin's impeccable string arrangements enhance the subtle harmonic shades of the closing "Diamond Dust." Blow by Blow signaled a new creative peak for Beck, and it proved to be a difficult act to follow. It is a testament to the power of effective collaboration and, given the circumstances, Beck clearly rose to the occasion. In addition to being a personal milestone, Blow by Blow ranks as one of the premiere recordings in the canon of instrumental rock music. Track listing 1. - every song hits

you know how some things just come together perfectly. examples would be Jordan, Pippen and a bunch of anybody's, burger n bun, french fries and ketchup, 98-2000 Yankees. Well, this album is one of those things.

- Must have for guitarist!

If your a guitarist and haven't heard this song than treat yourself to this. This is true genius. Turn it on, close your eyes and smile. Learn to play this and you will hypnotize your audiences. No one plays like this anymore. The scales and chord variations are different and refreshing yet its a classic piece of beauty. Love it.

- How do you NOT own this?

I bought this the DAY it came out. I’ve been listening and unraveling the mysteries inside ever since. Having become a guitar teacher in the 3rd act of my life, whenever anyone asks me how to play the guitar, I say simple. Follow these 3 steps. 1.) Buy Strat style guitar. 2.) Buy amp 3.) Buy Blow by Blow and learn. The end. Jeff Beck IS the electric guitar, and no one and no thing can ever come close.

- Blow By Blow

Really good. I recommend listening to this and then "Wired" the whole way through.

- Blistering Guitar!!!

The grooves on this CD and the guitar riffs are some of the best!!! This is a must have!!!

- Beck at his best!

the signature song by one most accomplished artists of our time. I have always been curious what the lyrics wood have been.

- BLOW by BLOW

This album is so good I buy it periodically just to have a fresh copy For the ages. Its couldnt get any better. Duanne, Dickie , Eric, Stevie, Roy, Jimmy, Pete, Jimi, Jeff wow

- Still Amazing

For those of us that are old enough to remember: Technology was a console stereo in the living room with a turntable and an FM radio. I would sneak in late at night and plug in headphones so that I could listen to the rock music on the radio without waking up the rest of the house. It must have been early in the morning when I first heard Jeff's guitar and the Roland electric piano with the revolving speaker. Even after 30 years, the sound is clean and tight and I don't know that any technological improvement or musical advance makes music better than this. It's clean and powerful with a craftmanship that is still unparalleled. I don't think that I had previously heard the fusion of rock and jazz before and nothing since has really been any better.

- music for the whole family

I'm now in my 50's - dug this immensely when it came out. My brother, 10 years years younger, picked it up from me... now his son, a rock drummer in his 20's, hears it like it was brand new. Beck remains one of the essential voices.

- Blow By Blow

This CD, by far, exemplifies who Jeff Beck is and what he can do! Listening to this gives me such exquisite pleasure! Jeff creates with 'Cause We've Ended As Lovers' & 'Diamond Dust' a sound so pure, tight and sensual...and 'Scatterbrain' has a rapid fire delivery that rips through this listener~ Whoa!

- Top five of my collection

I have an extensive and,for lack of a better word, eclectic collection of recordings of just about every genre, amassed over a period of 40 years. For pure musicianship and bravery, this album is the jewel of my collection, bringing to mind Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles.I have played it more than any other album.I think if it was re-released in today's music atmosphere,it would be a tremendous crossover hit, especially in the jazz market.

- Never gets old

I’ve been listening to this album since it came out in 1975 and it never gets old. Any fan of great guitar work needs this in their collection.

- If he isn't the best, there isn't anyone better.

Jeff Beck has to be one of the best guitarists ever. All of these songs aren't bad and Cause we've ended as lovers is just amazing. Get this if you enjoy solo guitar.

- Desert island material

This should be on any short list of recordings you'd take into exile on a desert island. Simply a stunning album. Beck is inventive and expressive, and by working with the band instead of letting it work for him he creates powerful and diverse pieces. The drumwork is superbly rich, part of the dense rhythmic drive. One of the best fusion efforts ever and it easily stands the test of time.

- Best Fusion Album I Own

It's amazing to see how Jeff Beck emerged from the yardbirds to go on to be a guitar god today. This album is one the best fusion albums that I have ever owned. Most of the new fusion albums that I have only have a few good songs. But I love ALL the songs on this album! That, my friends, is the difference between the classic rock era and the "hip hop era" that we are in now, where rock n roll, and fusion are not really on the map anymore.

- Perfect

Jeff beck is definately one of the besk guitar players of all time. This album is awesome the way he is able to express so much emotion by simply playing his guitar is amazing. Cause we've ended as lovers is one of the top ten guitar solos of all time for sure, that song is reason enough to get the album. In short one of the best guitar albums of all time

- Great

good instrumental rock that is not too in our face by todays standards. a classic of that era

- Blow by Blow

Jeff finnally had a huge success with an Album that for many came out of left field. However Jeff was always different and this" Billy Colbam- spectrum" album inspired effort is one of the beat jazz rock fusion albums made. Jeff took the Tommy Bolan- Colbam effort to heart and made it commercially successful by doing doing it jeff's way. I remember reading it was his first gold album(including yardbirds) till then. Download "cause we ended as lovers" and look up Billy Colbam's Spectrum.

- Cause We Ended As Lovers * * RULES! * *

Bought this album when it was first released (still pristine) and since CD's, have NOT stopped playing it on a regular basis! AWESOME GUITAR! Whenever I play it, the sound level is cranked up, and I am once again blown away! All tracks on the CD are excellent - personal favorite is "Cause We Ended As Lovers"

- Stunning

Cause We've Ended As Lovers is by far one of the most beautiful songs every written.

- Amazing Musical Journey!

This album is just about perfect in every way. I've heard it dozens of times, and it has never gotten even slightly old. The band (and Jeff of course) sounds great, and the arrangements are mesmerizing! Songs are catchy, relaxing, and upbeat all at the same time! What are you waiting for?!

- Amazing

You are the best Jeff

- Fantastic Album!

In my opinon this album is the absolute height of Jeff Becks career! No other Fusion guitarist has ever been able to weave such mind-bending solos that sound so fluid and natural. The rhythm section is spot on with Richard Bailey providing the drums and percussian for the album and Phil Chen playing bass. Because they form such a solid foundation it allows Max Middleton and Jeff Beck to explore dissonant, creative, musical concepts that no other instrumental album had approached before. Also, Stevie Wonder makes a guest apperance on the album and and plays keyboards on two tracks [Cause We've Ended as Lovers and Thelonius]. This a fantastic album I recommend everybody purchase!

- Dripping with goodness...

Take 1970s "police chase" theme music, add fused out jazz/funk, throw in some rock, and jam music and you might have an idea where this goes. It makes me laugh when I listen to it- not because it is funny (well, some of it is), but because it is so damn good. I don't smoke anymore, but for those that do, this is some real "ear candy" if you know what I mean...

- Blow by Blow

The best Of all Of the Jeff Beck offerings I could listen to this all day long. I have been listening to this for 40 years/ and 40 nights
