- No, no, no

Not what I'm looking to hear.

- today is the greatest...

today = joy people: get a clue. are you a musician? have you ever recorded music? have you been playing music for > 30 years? have you played > 10,000 live shows? yeah, didn't think so. this is a great work of art. that's what it is. time and air is their canvas.

- very pleased

This disc is great Phish. I'd even call it, 'special Phish'. Everybody who likes Phish, it seems, likes them for different reasons. This is probably because they have a little something for everybody. As for me, I love this album because it is RICH with great musical, melodic ideas, and good lyrics, all set to a very solid, well produced, well executed, rock solid foundation. This is the best produced album I've heard from Phish since Rift, back in '93. The harmonies are really good - better than usual. Phish has always had good harmonies, but never this tight. There are only a couple of what I'd call 'throw away' rockers on this album (decent tunes), but the rest of the album is 'my' Phish - great, well conceived compositions very comfortably implemented in a solid rock'n'roll context. Here's my most important statement about this album: Time Turns Elastic is the best Phish song I've ever heard. I've been waiting for this song for 16 years, because I heard it's potential in Phish back in '93. Consequently, though all of their albums are good, I've always felt a little disappointed that most of them have not quite fully reached that potential. Don't get me wrong - all Phish albums are great rock albums... But 'Time Turns Elastic' is a premium example of why Phish is greater than a jam band. I put that track up there in a class with songs like 'Gates of Delirium' or 'Close to the Edge' by Yes, 'Terrapin Station' by the Dead, and 'Thick as a Brick' by Jethro Tull... Songs that transcend the genre of the band and really lay some landmarks down. The track alone is worth the price of this album... Then, there are other fantastic tunes like Light, Twenty Years Later, Joy (which might actually touch your heart). This is just a great rock album I'd recommend to anybody - whether you like Phish or not. Just get it.

- Give it a chance...

Ok so I've been a phish head for over ten years, at first I was sad when I heard this albumn. I thought I was in a grocery store listening to some weirdo music that is played on elevators, in convenient stores or one of those free cd's you can get for ansewering a survey. Anyways, I forced myself to listen all the way through multiple times. I have now come to the conclusion while its no lawn boy or ghost, its a pretty good albumn. I would put it on the level of Farmhouse, catchy tunes with some decent jams. I will always love the boys and at least its not a round room albumn in which I never told anybody about. I just pretend that cd was never produced. I do think the boys are headed down the right path.

- A Superb Return to the Studio

Is this another Story of the Ghost? No. Is this another Rift? Certainly not. Does that mean this is an inferior Phish album? By no means. While this album may lack the characteristics that defined the Phish of the nineties, it also lacks the tentativity and darkness of '02-'04 Phish. This album is four great musicians and songwriters loving their job. It's an evolution for Phish, and a colletion of well-written, polished songs that are fun to listen to and easy to sing along with. A Joy it is.

- stay retired fellas

sounds horrid. I can't believe they actually made this album, must be hard up for $$$$$$$$$$.

- F*^% Yeah

Groovy, soulful, bumpin, thoughtful, and more. I'm not going to talk about the musicainship, though it is t&t, tight and terrific, I will just say it's groovy, soulful, bumpin, thoughtful, and more. Well worth it.

- amazing

awesome cd that is a must for any phish fan!! every song in my opinion is amazing. can't stop listening to it.

- lost but found again

I had given up on phish's studio albums since the release of farmhouse, which sounded so commercial my grandmother liked some of the songs. All I have to say is THANK YOU to the guys for remebering the JOY of making music. You can hear the passion again in this album. Stealing Time from the Faulty plan, Backwards, Joy, Time Turns Elastic- all classic phish. I've been to a few shows this summer and fall- including their tour finale in Charlottesville where they busted out an incredible Stealing Time that was truly on par with divided sky and cavern. These are songs that rock live, the guys have fun playing, and remind me of the Phish of old. I'm not going to say this is their absolute best album, but you if are a phan, you will realize that the time off made them appreciate the music again. Thanks guys for an awesome album. Can wait to have my soul melted on the spring/summer tours.

- joy

the rest served the band well. i suggest buying the itunes album version so that you get "let me lie". my favorite track.

- For those who hate round room and undermind

Have been into phish for 12 years, and look, I hated the last 2 albums. Hated them. I have been really unwilling to buy this album because I assumed it would be in the same penalty box. After listening to dozens of live albums for the last few years, I saw that they would be heading near me for the fall tour and figured, got to give them the benefit and just try out Joy since I won't miss the shows. And I have to say, this album is MUCH better than I expected. I really didn't think they would ever come back again with a real effort, but this is totally cool. So let's not get ahead of ourselves, this isn't like a 5 star album, but to the guy like me who really hated the last few albums, I think it is worth your cash to give it a shot. This album has renewed my interest in the band. C'mon it is phish - this is a 4 star effort for them and like a 6 star effort vs the rest of the humans trying to make a living selling records. It makes me happy to listen to this album, which hasn't happened for me with a studio album since farmhouse. So to phish - well done, and thanks for doing what you do well. To the skeptics - I think that this is better than you think. If you saw some unknown band playing this, you would like it. So be fair.

- It will win you over!

I have been a phan for over 15 years and saw my first Phish show in '94. Over the years Phish has always struggled putting there style in the studio, but they have done some good ablums. Based on the last few albums I was not expecting much from Joy, and wasn't in any rush to buy it. But once I did I saw a Phish that has grown up... as I have. Its mature and well produced and well played. My music tastes have changed as I've gotten older and Phish's music has changed too as time has pasted, I find it refreshing and enjoyable. If your stuck on Phish of the mid '90s then your out of luck... and probably have been since the mid '90s... imagine that!! I loved Phish then, and I love Phish now... a band that continues evolve and mature and take us in new directions. Sit back and enjoy this album... its good music, have fun with it!!

- SOOOOOOO BORING

THESE GUYS DONT EVEN SOUND LIKE THEYRE USED TO WRITTING SONGS. AWFUL

- Phantastic!

I know I'm phine'n but wow! How do these guys keep do'n it after so long. Overall the music "has changed" but so has "the Band"!! Have all you naysayers forgotten how much older they are....look the bottom line is the guys have aged but the sound is still "phresh" as ever!! Way to go Guys!

- boring

What is the big deal about these guys? All their stuff evolves around a repetitive grooves over and over again.... Trey plays his guitar very well and is very talented, however the bass player is very, very boring. The only reason these guys made it was that of timing... coming in on the demise of the DEAD, and capitalizing on there fans.... Give me a break.... this music is boring and unimaginative.

- Not what I was expecting at all

I have like Phish for quite some time now, since highschool and that been 20+ years. and I have to admit, this album I think has one song on it I enjoyed. Light. Thats it. The rest sounded like all the Phish, knock off bands, like Moe and WIdespread panic and perpetual groove and crap. Just lame, commercial sounding pop rock. Nothing going anywhere and I seriously question why they even wasted the time going into the studio. I mean, they have the cash flow and security now, so why not go in and keep being artist and produce more art, like they have over the years. I will be the first to admit, not all the albums they have created have been solid from start to finish, I loved seeing this band live, but there is a reason you only heard certain songs played. They have it in them to produce just flat out boring tracks. I think they should retool, go get some new inspiration, maybe hang out with the guys from MMW, or Zorn, or go dig into some more bluegrass or hell even some old punk rock, and just see what they can create, that doesnt sound like this heap of crap. I used to enjoy getting high listening to band because it took a great set of songs and made the experience even more powerful. Now I think I would have to be wasted just to sit through this whole album

- Thanks guys!

I feel that the guys really poured their hearts into this album. Each member is completely lending what they have learned from their solo acts and melded it into phish again. I get it. Joy is one of my favorites...made me cry the first time i heard it (because I thought of my daughter)..it is sweet and heartfelt. Thank you Phish and so happy you are back...see you in 30 days!

- Great band, great album, no question

Phish are one of those bands tht comes around maybe once or twice in a lifetime, everysong they make is a masterpiece in it's own way nd this album Is no exception, phish doesn't neeg singles because every song can be a hit, each song makes u feel good

- Apparently drugs and festivals affects your taste

What an awful, awful, waste of time. Love Phish, but they do not have it anymore. The album seems forced and uninspired. The 5 stars and such can only be described as nostalgia and wishful thinking masking what the ears are actually hearing. Nothing is quite as painful as listening to a band that has lost its voice.

- Just amazing!

I actually got into the band after they got back together and made this. Hardcore Phish fans will probably hate this, because their songs on this album tend to drift towards the pop side. But if you just listen to solos and the lyrics, the writing of each and every song is just awesome. Time turns elastic's composure is just astonishing, with all the key changes, the minor turning to major. This album will knock your socks off, not to sounds cliche.

- Good album if you like pop rock...

Something was missing from this album it almost seems dumbed down. I guess I'm just craving songs like YEM, reba, fluffhead; the Phish that inspired me to pick up the piano simply isn't here.

- Best phish album in 16 years

Easily their finest recording since hoist. Junta is of course their masterpiece.

- Gone PHISHIN'!

I deem Joy most AWESOMEST! I'm with SoPhast! Joy and Sugar Shack are best; CAN'T WAIT 2 see 'em LIVE again in 34 daze! I 've been SO DEPRESSED since hiatus, but breaks are great 4 re-phreshing. This IS PHISH, matured, in a happy place, and commin' straight phrom the heart. Reminds me of Rift and Lawnboy. And YES... When you hear Possum on the radio you GET IT! HIGHNESSTY

- What a Joy!!!

Thank you! This is such a refreshing experience full of energy and fun. You made me smile!

- Just OK

"The White Album" - "Farmhouse" are all awesome albums. The band is made up of some of the most gifted musicians - EVER - in my opinion. There are countless songs that literally send shivers down my spine when I listen to them because they are so good and nothing beats a live Phish show, but what happened after "Farmhouse". Something changed. I don't know if they just ran out of ideas or changed their approach to writing music, but something has changed. I really like the songs "Ocelot", "KDF", and "Sugar Shack" on this album and "Time Turns Elastic" has it moments, but the rest of the songs are just OK. Definently better than "Round Room" or "Undermind", but PLEASE Trey, Mike, Page, and John go back to your roots!

- This is great Phish.

This is an incredible album. Really sounds like Phish in the earlier years - really tight and clean. This is such a great grouping of songs that really celebrates their return. Welcome back.

- Going Backwards Down the Number Line

When I was a small kid (around 1994-ish), my mom took me to Darien Lake Center where Phish was playing and she told me throughout the set that "I love them!" when Joy came out, she bought it immediately and popped it in and asked me if I remembered them. The beginning track, Backwards Down the Number Line, got me started...again. Now I own fifteen of their Live Series (one being the Darien Lake performance ;) and I own about nine of their studio works.) Joy makes it ten :) I love Phish!!! This album made my fanbase in Phish even stronger. Great album!!!

- Best Yet!

I've been a huge fan of their live music for years and known to throw their new studio CDs out the window of my speeding car , out of extreme disapointment, to lie on the side of the road in the tall grass and broken glass. I still have this one and love every song on it. I can't imagine what they'll do to each song when they get them on stage.

- Trey Anastasio - Featuring Phish

Ok, I admit I am always the skeptic. When I first heard Joy I thought "This sounds more like Trey's solo stuff than Phish" and was not too impressed. After seeing most of these songs live during the 2009 tour, I wondered how the album would turn out. I am warming up to "Joy" more and more each time I hear it, but it still seems like more of solo Trey and less of Phish. I know I shouldn't "live inside the gloom" especially after waiting so long for Phish to come back. the tour was phenominal. The album is above average but not spectacular. Ocelot, Kill Devil Falls, STFTFP are my top 3.

- hsajsadh9jad

brilliant brilliant brilliant.i listen to this non stop.i bought the cd and it has not left my car.best song are backwards down the number line, stealing time from the faulty plan, kill devil hills, ocelot, and time turns elastic.possibly my favorite album from them.i get happy just from thinking about this album.

- more music to check out

if you dig Phish you may be into "My Friend Ben"....different but the same if you know what i mean.

- omgg

by FAR the best song is sugar shack! listen 2 it. it has a great beat and thee drumming is great! starts reggae and has a giant dead head inspiration

- ACK

Great album and the songs sound even better live. Welcome back

- Your all nuts.

Everyone calm down. This is a great album, so shut up and enjoy it. All you people with the "Ew it's too pop-rock," "It's not the same phish we used to huff nitrous too back in the day." Just enjoy it or don't, but don't try to hold the man up to the boy and ask, "Why did you let your hair fall out, loser?" Like everything else in this gracious world, they've grown and are different, but that's only their appearance. It's still Phish, yeah? I was never a "phan," I've been to only ONE concert, never been to a festival, but I own four other albums and I love them all. Buy it. Enjoy it.

- Oh how the mighty have fallen

Disappointing, but sort of expected when considering their more recent output. A sad parody of sorts, not at all what I so fondly recall.

- Really proud 2 be a VTer.

I love phish!!!! Barely anybody my age, (I'm a junior high student) listens to them, but I'm a total phish head! Pretty good album, bit I like previous ones better, :)

- Pretty bad

First 5 seconds I heard this album I thought; ugggh another Trey album. I don't know what happened to Trey musically, but he absolutely took a different turn and I think its for the worse. Could be from the drug problem he had, I don't know. But he has pushed his new taste into Phish. The lyrics are embarrassingly corny. "Got a cliff bar and some cold green tea?" Phish has managed to float above the corny aspects of the hippie scene but not now. The lyrics are empty, lifeless, and downright corny. It feels like a few good sounding songs were quickly filled with nonsense lyrics. Add on top of that the fact that Trey stretches his voice, like previous Trey albums, to levels that he cannot and should not try to reach. Reach high, but know your limits and stick to what you are good at. This album doesn't follow this. Awful.

- Fun Album That I Can't Stop Listening to (Converted a Die-Hard Deadhead)

I have never been a huge Phish fan. At the Furthur shows NYE, I had a lot of friends playing the Festival 8 shows, as well as this studio album. I really dug the jams, so I bought this Album. I am not dissapointed at all. I am pleased to say that When Phish comes remotely close to California, I'll be at most of the shows. Catch y'all around the campfire!

- Good.

I thought this was going to be their downfall album. It's actually preety good! If you want better, check into Billy Breathes.

- Yawn

C'mon guys. Seriously. What happened. Hope all who attend the Indio festival get a good dose of old stuff. Because I guarantee 99% of ticket holders don't want to hear this. Unless they're in line for the porta-potty.

- Awesome

I love this album! I love everything they've done and this one is no dissapointment. Not sure what people have a problem with it for, great music arraingments, lyrics and choruses. Home run.

- Talk about a comeback!!!!!!!!!!

AMAZING- Everytime I hear about a band that I used to love getting back together, there is always that close your eyes and hope to God it's as good as you remember them being. Having so many of my memories attached to Phish songs, I was anticipating the worst, hoping for the best and If anyone could do it, it would be them. As they say "you don't know a good thing till its gone." But I say You don't know how good till they comeback. And what a comeback. Love it-BUY IT-worth it!!!

- Actually..it

I heard Time Turns Elastic a few days before Summer Tour 09 began, and was having a bachelor party/reunion with 5 of my closest friends. I cringed and turned off the song not even all the way through it...no no no it was SO bad. Flash forward to the shows at Jones Beach and Mansfield. The boys were 85% back. Not too shabby, and it was just plain damn fun. Really, I'm done with the hyper-critiquing of a show. I wasn't at work, I was with my best friends in the whole world, on vacation, in a rented pimped out RV (cause we're old and can afford it now), grilling up good grub and it was stellar. A few tracks were off Joy that we tried dancing to, but weren't getting in the groove. BUT, we sat back and listened and gave Phish the benefit of the doubt...and the doubt was there. We've each seen 75-100+ shows each from '93-'00 (not one of us saw post-hiatus shows) so I think we're fairly able to discern good Phish from great Phish. A few months later...I'm home in the kitchen cooking dinner for my new bride, and threw on Joy as it had just released. I left it on repeat...and two or three hours later...I was hooked. I went to bed humming the album. I guess I just feel like Joy is just that...a Joy to listen to. It's NOT melt-your-face-jamming and sick fall 98 funk. But it's mature, and carefree, introspective and light-hearted. It's kinda like Rift...it invokes a state of being...and that being is Joy. Hate it or love it. I don't give a crap. I think half of it, is just like all the other Phish moments we have. You're driving down the road one day...and Possum starts playing and you just freaking get it. at that very moment...you get Phish. PLay this album while you're having a little happy moment and I'm willing to bet most of you (yeah, not all of you) will have a happy little joyous smile...and you'll get Phish...again :)

- Reunited and it sounds so bad

Sad Trey...really sad. You said you didn't want to become a charicature of yourself. Congratulations, it's worse. Break up again...please

- It's Still Phish

Phish is my favorite band and 3 stars is lowest I would ever rate a Phish release. I suppose one could say that Phish has matured since Junta, but I personally miss the whimsicality and pure fantasy from the days when gamehenge was center stage. At it's worst, Joy offers us banal and silly lyrics like 'we want you to be happy, cause this is your song too' along with a heavy dose of nostalgia rearing its boring head at times. Time Turns Elastic and Light are enjoyable jams, if not somewhat deflated in comparison with Phish jam classics like "Mike's Song" or "You Enjoy Myself". Still, though, since it's Phish, I will continue to listen to this album.

- on the way back

As a standalone album from a new band this would be a noteworthy listening experience. However, being that it's Phish there's some extra standards that I have no choice but to put on it. This should be placed in the category of a comeback album and it does tickle the senses enough to put it at the top of others that have failed after years apart. I hope this is the beginning of a new Phish era and this album represents a somewhat misguided and disorganized attempt to produce music that still resulted in something admirable. I think great things are still to come!

- Nice Job Guys!

I'm feelin' the Joy. Nice job, Glad you're back!

- just horrible

jerry is dead, phish su@#s, get a job

- Just boring

Cleary strong musicians and some nice guitar work but there is nothing very original or catchy here. Get one of their live albums.

- Phish should stick to their old stuff

Phish is a great band but this pretty bad. Trey's voice is weak and listless, and his lyrics are worse. They have no edge on this album, it is very flat. They should just stick to touring and they will do fine.
