Critical reception Professional ratings Review scores Source Rating AllMusic 3.5/5 stars Encyclopedia of Popular Music 4/5 stars Entertainment Weekly B+ Q 4/5 stars The Rolling Stone Album Guide 4/5 stars Spin 5/10 USA Today 3/4 stars The Village Voice (dud) Q said of the album, "equal parts originality and willful complication", and stated, "Although the band's determinedly jammy methods do lead them away from their songs at times, almost every track of Crash is at least 'good in parts'". Jim DeRogatis of Rolling Stone found "Matthews' vocals too much like Sting's at times" and "the lyrics typically banal". Comparing the band to their musical contemporaries (like Hootie and the Blowfish), DeRogatis stated, "Snappier violin-driven excursions such as "Tripping Billies" mix the progressive rock of U.K. or Eddie Jobson-era Roxy Music with the earthy folk rock of Fairport Convention. This eclecticism gives Matthews a slight edge over his peers, but that's sort of like saying you prefer vanilla ice cream to vanilla frozen yogurt. Me, I dig Cherry Garcia." - They are great!!

Love my DMB.

- This is the album that changed my life...

When this album first came out in the spring of 1996, I was 16 years old. I bought it the day it was released, and immediately fell in love with every song. I listened from beginning to end...and then repeat...and then repeat...and so it goes that this album became so much more than music for me. The songs are so beautifully written (lyrically and instrumentally). A month after it's release, I went to my first DMB concert and my life has never been the same. Sixteen years later and I still proclaim that this is my favorite album of all time. Buy it...you won't be disappointed!

- The DMB Album

This was the first CD that I ever owned so it holds a special place. I'd recommend crash to anyone with working ears and a soul,it's all killer and 0 filler.

- Love this Album!!

This album could honestly start and end with “Say Goodbye” and it’d still be my favorite album ever!! That song….It’s a lyrical masterpiece!! So many great songs on this album though!!

- Amazing!

Another incredible DMB album! While the whole album is great, my favorite songs are #41, Two Step, Crash Into Me, and Say Goodbye. LOVE!

- Legendary

As soon as you press play on “So Much To Say,” after you hear the strange sounding “Ah, uh, ah, ooh, ee, ah,” we hear that amazing riff on that guitar. Dave Matthews is amazing at the riffs! Two Step makes you want to dance when you hear Dave sing: “Celebrate, we will, cuz life is short but sweet for certain.” Then, the legendary Crash Into Me plays. This love song is a song that I will never forget. Crash is an album that has sounds you will never forget. In order to be a fan of DMB, you need to listen to this album.

- Amazing

Timeless treasures on this record.

- I'm blown away.

When I first came across Dave Matthews Band, I stuck with the essential hits, tracks like Crash Into Me on this album and Crush off of Before These Crowded Streets. If only I knew what I had been missing all this time. I decided to listen to every track on this album and it is just masterful. There is such beautiful substance to every track that just can't be matched, if it weren't for Busted Stuff, this would be my absolute favorite DMB album.

- Hidden Gem

I cannot believe that “Cry Freedom” is ranked last when arranged according to popularity. Just give it a listen!

- Moments in time

Each song on this album means a lot to me and to thousands of DMB fans in their early 30's to their mid 40's who had this album as a soundtrack for your life. It's mixed incredibly well and the musicianship is second to none. This album as well as "Under the Table and Dreaming" were the impetus for my love of guitar playing.

- An old friend found

Don’t know how I never upgraded from the cassette version of this incredible album that endeared me to his music. Finally did it today so I can enjoy with my road trip to New Orleans.

Test

- Too much is my jam

I listen to too much so much and I love with it and it is my favorite song and I always listen to it when I go skiing😊

- Never gets old

Like a few of the other reviewers, this was one of my first CD's and has been a staple for 15 years. I keep waiting for it to get old but after literally hundreds of listens, I still love it. Came back to review in hopes that someone else will buy it and enjoy as much as I have

- @Nathan Edmunds

The difference is the price. Duh!

- THE MOST WHOLESOME CONTENT

the most innocent naughty summer soundtrack to being innocent and doing innocent naughty things in the summer

- great studio album

love the live versions much better but this is a great studio album

- timeless

I bought this album during my sophomore year of college, and sadly, through years of travel and study abroad, I lost this album. I've slowly been building up my collection thanks to iTunes, and when I saw this album, I immediately purchased. This is one of Matthew's best works. It's timeless. It brings to light the beauty of his work without focusing on what "radio" typically plays with regard to musicians such as his band. All lovers of of any type of music should listen to this album at least once.

- DMB things to write about

Title 1’s “nickname for “So Much To Say” So Much To Stay Title 2’s “liking songs I Like “Ants Marching & Jimi Thing”

Amazing

- Speaks to Gen X and Elder Millenials but...

I just have never acquired a taste for their music. I have tried and tried for 25 years, but I just do not get any enjoyment out of it.

- Heard the song at a Target

Heard Crash into Me at Target store. Stop in my tracks, because I heard this I guess 20+ yrs ago. Never knew who sang it and couldent find it. Now in modern times I whipped out my phone and Shazam it. This song is incredible, haunting 90’s song
