Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman

About Tracy Chapman by Tracy Chapman Album

Tracy Chapman is the self-titled debut album by singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman, released in 1988. It hit #1 on both the US & UK album charts. The album was critically acclaimed and helped to launch the 1990s female singer-songwriter movement, which included artists like Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. The first single "Fast Car" peaked at #5 in the US and #6 in the UK. The second single "Talkin' Bout a Revolution" reached #75, but received much airplay and also charted in the Adult Contemporary and Modern Rock charts amongst others. "Baby Can I Hold You", the third single, only reached #48 - however, the song was a #2 hit for Boyzone in 1997. Tracy Chapman was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and "Fast Car" gained Chapman an award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 31st Grammy Awards in early 1989. In 1989, the album was rated number 10 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Albums of the 80's." In 2003, the album was ranked number 261 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

- One of the best albums of the 80s

Tracy Chapman managed to strike a lot of chords with this seminal album. Songs full of emotion and reflection, anger, angst, desire, longing. "Talkin' Bout A Revolution" reminded me so much of Patti Smith's "Frederick" from the 1970s, how it starts off softly, then builds to a wonderful, driving beat. Kind of like making love. Still one of the best albums of the 1980s from a woman who, at the time, was unique. Kind of like Joan Armatrading in this respect, she makes her own music and no one else sounds like her.

- Outstanding

She sings more than a song. She is the true artist!

- "Fast Car"

Hi! I love this song "Fast Car" my fav song :)

- DON'T think about it, just DOWNLOAD the album

Hearing all these songs brings back memories. I remember the first time I heard "Fast Car" I couldn't stop listening to it over and over again. I was only 10 when the song was released and was too young to fully understand the meaning of all her songs, but I couldn't stop listening to it. I'm thrilled I can download the entire album from iTunes. Now if only I could get some old school Kid Rock.

- Still awesome

After so many years, this has not lost its power... As a matter of fact, it’s just the opposite!

- I love her music

When I want to relax I listen to Tracy.

- A Real Artist 🦋

I’ve loved Tracy’s songs ever since I heard them in my mom’s car. I fell in love with her music and her authenticity. I love her voice and the depth of it. Whenever I hear fast car I feel like crying. It’s a truly relatable song. I love her. 🦋🚘

- Legendary

This is one of the greatest singer-songwriter albums of all time. There's not a single bad song on this. Her voice is so smooth and beautiful, yet packed with so much emotion and passion. Her lyrics are real and honest; she knows how to write an incredible song. This is one of those records that moves me to the core every time I listen to it. It's a record I've grown up with, and it's shaped me in so many ways. Tracy Chapman is at her finest here (not than any of her other albums aren't spectacular), and if this album isn't already a favorite, it soon will be. Favorite songs: Fast Car Talkin' 'Bout A Revolution Behind The Wall She's Got Her Ticket Why? For My Lover Least favorite: Couldn't pick if you paid me

- Outstanding album!

This album is one of the few albums that I can and like to hear complete from song 1 to song 11

- Thank You, TC

Fast Car - One of the very special songs in my life. Pulled me up so many times when I was younger, if only because it made me feel understood and not alone as I was trying to make it through a rough time. Thank you, Tracy!

- Classic!

One of the greatest albums of all time. A true gift when most music of the time (not that is much better now) was absolute garbage. A true classic. Thanks, Tracy!!

- Fast Car

I think "Fast Car" is the saddest song I've ever heard, or close to it. Sad in its power, of course: it really conveys all the tragedy of its character's life.

- Never Gets Old

I loved this album in high school and I love it now....her music brings back fond memories. Music to chill to!

- NO

NO

- BRILLIANT🌈

Doesn’t get much better than this. 🎤 Tracy is a musical genius, and a nice person as well👍

- Nothing more pure, true, and beautiful

Absolutely loved this album at nine years old and still do at 37 years old !!!!

- no..

Sorry Tracey.. you're a talker.. you're not a singer. I don't know how you ever got an album made. You want to listen to a singer.. I give you Stevie Wonder. Now he is a singer.

- ...

This song speaks for itself. Truly a beautiful song. It cuts deep.

- For You

I have no words to say, no words to convey this feeling inside, I have... For Your Album

- 1988 And Not Poorly Produced WOW

This albums is amazing. simple as that. Every song speaks of real issues and does not feel preachy. My favorite album on vinyl and I have listened to thousands of records. If you have a chance to listen to it on vinyl, do it! Still good on Mp3. Whole album sounds like something from the early seventies. Excellent!

- Real life

I loved this album when it first came out and every song remains relevant today. Tracy has such feeling in her songs. I can relate to every one. Thx Tracy. ❤️

- Timeless....

What a fantastic album. Every song is a pleasure to listen to. Tracy is a very talented musician.

- Phenomenal artist..

Tracy Chapman is a true story teller. I've followed her work from the release of this album.. Amazing artist

- love this song

im only 13 but this is one of my fav songs

- Tracy Chapman

Amazing

- Love, Love, Love Tracy Chapman

Her one of a kind voice and soulful singing makes her an icon.

- Fine debut

Tracy Chapman's debut is a good solid record that shows you who she is. "Fast Car" and "Talkin' bout a revolution" are the best known, but "Why?" is a really great song. She also shows that she can give good ballads with "Baby Can I Hold You?" and "For You".

- Impressive

Tracy Chapmans self titled album is really a work of art.

- Fast car <3

Fast car just never gets old. If you could only buy one song I'd definitely recommend Fast car. 5/5

- Not Your Average Artist

I first heard this album when I was 10 yrs old (in 1988). I remember it stirring something inside of me and my having to stop and listen to this beautiful somewhat haunting voice. Some 24 yrs later I still have the same reaction anytime I put this CD on or hear one of these songs. She is a rare talent and masterful songwriter/storyteller. She should be ranked as one of THE voices of the 20th century and beyond. She is timeless!

- Wow

Amazing

- gotta have my tracy!

this album is immaculate and stunning. like her other albums, it clearly shows that her voice and songs are beautiful. my favorites are Fast Car, Talking bout a revolution, She's got her ticket, Why?, and Behind the Wall. T C, you do NOT dissapoint.

- My favorite album.

I've been listening to this since I was 13 (24 now) and it's still my favorite. I have so many memories attached to the tracks. I find this whole album perfect.

- Good music

She sound like a male country singer but good

- Who doesn't love...

Fast Cars!!!

- :)

Love Love Love!!

- How fast is your car?

Walking to work fast car popped into my head. And in that ten minute walk I remembered being in high school. Liking almost every genre of music except folk music. And at that moment, adding what is essentially the folk music of my generation, to that list. (Ok, James Taylor was the exception, but not enough till that point to make me add folk music to my list)!

- Live!

Gotta tell you, I saw her at one of Farm Aid concerts around 1985, and she blew that place away! Have loved her music ever since

- Timeless

Heard “Baby Can I Hold You” recently and was reminded how much I loved that song and this album. It the occurred to me it’s now 30 years old. It’s timeless. Meant s lot to me in college and it’s like discovering an old friend.

- 31 years old and still pure gold

I have loved this album since I was a kid. Classic and can never be topped. Tracy sealed her name on the list of Blues legends with this one.

- Fast car

My favorite song of all time is fast car but there all pretty good

- Great music

I love this album, of course I remember Fast Car, but there are so many great songs on this album. Truly this is a sit down and listen beginning to end affair. There is such a soulful quality and authentic original feel to this album

- Racism was alive back then

It’s amazing, I didn’t realize the racist overtones and the anti-white lyrics of this artist. It’s a shame the singer fell into the very racism she was probably trying to prevent. I came here for the “fast car” song, but I never knew these others.

- Legendary

Legendary Tracy Chapman.

- Awesome

Fast car awesome

- Revolution

More timely and powerful than ever!

- Love tracy

Downloaded the album and only got 8 songs. Thanks itunes! You robbed another customer. The album is great, just wish I had it all.

- If you want to listen to the human condition

This is pure art. One of the life changing listens. ❤

- Love it!

:)

- One of the greats
