Rage Against the Machine - Killing In the Name

Killing In the Name by Rage Against the Machine Song Info

"Killing in the Name" was the first single released by rap metal band Rage Against the Machine from their self-titled album, and is arguably the band's signature song. On 2 Novemeber 1992, it was reissued together with one previously unreleased track, "Darkness of Greed" the track "Clear the Lane" originally released on a white only pressing at the time of first release on the b-side to 'killing in the name'. The album's cover pictured Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, burning himself to death in Saigon in 1963 in protest of the murder of Buddhists by Prime Minister Ngô Đình Diệm's regime. Live performances Zack de la Rocha sometimes changes the lyrics in the second verse from "Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses" to "Some of those that burn crosses are the same that hold office" when playing live. It is also sometimes changed to "Some of those that work forces are the same that burn churches". Critical reception "Killing in the Name" was placed at number 89 on "100 Greatest Guitar Solos", a poll made by Guitar World. Q magazine placed "Killing in the Name" at number 24 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks and at number 99 in its list of the 100 greatest songs ever. The song earned its notoriety in the United Kingdom when its BBC Radio 1 DJ, Bruno Brookes, played the uncensored version of the song on his Top 40 countdown, leading to 138 complaints. This moment of infamy has since been consistently referenced by numerous British rock media. Other appearances The band Audioslave, which incorporated all but one member of Rage Against the Machine, played the song at multiple shows."Killing in the Name" is featured on fictional alternative rock station Radio X, in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and is used as a bumper song on The Jim Rome Show. A note-for-note cover version of "Killing in the Name" is a playable song in the Guitar Hero II video game for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, as a part of the main song list. It is found in the fifth song tier, Return of the Shred, in the PS2 version and in the sixth tier, Relentless Riffs, in the Xbox 360 version. However the song's lyrics are altered to remove the expletives, replacing the sentence repeated over 15 times "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" with "You're under control, I won't do what you tell me!, and the word "Motherfucker!" near the end is replaced with "Under control!". La Maison Tellier made an acoustic cover of "Killing in the Name" that possessed a distinctive folk sound. In July 2007 a remix of this song by SebastiAn (miscredited as a Mr. Oizo remix) was Zane Lowe's "Hottest Record in the World" on his show on BBC Radio 1. Comedian Bill Hicks played the song at the end of his shows toward the end of his life. The song was featured in the movie Step Up 2 during the final dance scene. The Apples, a funk band from Tel Aviv, Israel released a cover on a 7" vinyl on Freestyle Records. In 2004, radio and television commentator Glenn Beck used instrumental sections of the song as an open for his radio show. In early December 2009, members of the social networking site Facebook launched a group encouraging people to buy the song in the week running up to Christmas in order to prevent the winner of the The X Factor (UK) TV show from achieving the coveted Christmas number one slot in the UK Singles Chart. 954,863 members (as of the 20th December 2009) have joined the group. They won, and also donated over £65,000 to UK charity Shelter. The week also set a record for download sales in a single week as it reached the top spot on downloads alone. No hard copies of the single were released. Music video The video was released in 1993. This clip was filmed entirely in a small venue. The uncensored version of the video clip was banned on MTV for such a long period of time that the video's existence was in doubt until its release on the self-titled video.

- Pretty good....

Great music, addicting guitar riffs, but the part that mostly makes the song, lyrics, are not so good. Very repetitive

- Amazing

I heard wake up on "the matrix" and I was interested immediately. I heard the rest of the album. Still stunned.

- The album cover

Is of the monk who burned himself to protest the discrimination against the Buddist in Vietnam. But why in the hell is this the cover?

- RATMAN2

Awesome soundtrack man really cool:)

- !

I Love RATM! Fantastic music! Great pump up music for anything, and still fairly technical. With that said fervently disagree with them politically on almost everything, their songs are too political :/

- A classic

This album is fantastic. RATM's debut couldn't have been better, with several songs each with a different feel, theme, and idea. If you want music worth listening to over and over for the rest of your life. Goes great with Tool (which sadly isn't on iTunes yet...)

- Amazing Band

If you wanna get pumped up, listen to any song on this album, Zach's energy and passion will get you pumped.

- Nasty!

Great album! What a movement....

- Amazing

Best album of everyone's life

- Hey, Rage fans...

...Paul Ryan is a fan. RATM is officially irrelevant.

- No Brainer

Buy this entire album and get schooled. That is all.

- Rage Against The Machine

20 years later, and this album is still ahead of its time, I truly appreciate this album, even though many rock/rap fans don't. This is easily there best album. A debut album can't be any more perfect than this

- best

this is the best rage album ever. i love the heavy guitar riffs though i don't entirely agree with the anti-governmental ideas. i like the lyrics and zack's voice is screaming and epic! my favorites are definitely: bombtrack 10/10 killing in the name 9/10 freedom 9/10 township rebellion 8.5/10 =)

- True Music

Free , True , And Heart was put into this album .

Thank u gta and radio x for leading me to a great band!!

- Awesome

This album has half of my top10 Rage songs including Bombtrack, Killing in the Name, Wake Up, Freedom, Know your enemy. Definitely worth getting. This album will blow your mind, I was introduced to Rage through hearing Wake Up at the end of The Matrix.

- Best

This is the best album but not by much. All the others are great too. It's pretty rockin stuff in my opinion.

- Awesome mix of rock and rap!

I love this band! It's one of my top 2 along with creed. And I'm a republican conservative! These are all great songs to work out to also. My favorites are bombtrack, & wake up.

- The best band in the whole world

Don't talk crap about this band atleast they do real music and i wouldn't compare them to SOAD because soad has only 6 good songs.

- Epic

Such true lyrics, yet created so early. They were some of the first true metel bands, this album shows that.

- Awesome

I usually hate rap, but that is because there isn't real music in the background. This is real music, and good rapping. Awesomesauce

- Still the best

I'm 17 years old, it's 2011, and rage against the machine is still my favorite band. 20 years later, an they're still the best. Make another album!!

- GTA

Radio X..........San Andreas.........

- RATM

Best album by Rage. RATM takes power again making epic songs and political songs. Recommended songs: 1. Killing In The Name~ A powerful, raging song, by far the best song RATM has done. 2. Wake Up~ RATM does mostly rap. A very furious song, and worth it for 6 minutes. 6 minutes of epicness. 3. Bombtrack~ Funky rap, it's really good. 4. Freedom~ Buy if you like screaming... Lots of screaming. 5. Know Your Enemy~ This kicks Green Day's "Know Your Enemy"' a**.

- Amazing

Remember this in 92 like yesterday amazing album from start to finish RATM u rock(:

- Such a good album

has anyone noticed that at least once on every song zack goes "UGHHH!!!" i love this album tho!!! sum1 tell me wt 2 buy: this album, evil empire, or the battle of los angeles

- Incredible

This is by far, the best 'nu-metal' band to ever come out of L.A. Period.

- Alot better than expected

I expected just another metal/rap group But was surprised at how original ratm sounded, thought i might of wasted $10 but $$$ well spent Lacks the stat because didnt nearly live up 2 its hype i mean best album ever gettin a little carried away

- A Classic

Rage Against The Machine is one of the best albums of all time. Zack's fiery, anger spewing lyrics are inspiring and thought provoking. I can guarantee that this CD will be the soundtrack of the revolution if it ever happens. Tom Morello is one of the best guitarist to ever have written a riff and is without a doubt the most creative. My personal favorites on this album are Wake Up, Bullet In The Head, and Bombtrack. Killing In The Name is an amazing song in its own right as well, but personally I think Wake Up or Bullet In The Head are two of the greatest songs ever recorded. This is a must have for any music listener, hardcore or casual. If only the band starts back up and makes another album, then the revolution can begin and we can take our country back from the clutches of the feds

- Five Stars for sure! Semper FI

I first listened to this album when I was in the Marines in the 90's it definitely has BALLS and way better than the garbage that's out now!

- Killing in the name of

Best dude... Just best. You if like it then you would like hangman's body count. It's by volbeat I think.

- Love

This album is great. I usually don't like this much hardcore music but rage against the machine makes it good

- Rage Against the Machine

This is just my favorite band once I heard Bulls On Parade I got the discography and they were KICK-A**. Now um taking a Hiatus with this album!!!! I listened to it way to much... and I became obsessed with it. Then....... The Battle of Los Angeles came out!!!!! This album I never could stop listening to!!!! With their blend of funk and Crazynesz. 1. Bombtrack 5/5 2. Killing In the Name 5/5 3. Take the Power Back 4.9/5 4. Settle for Nothing 4.9/5 5. Bullet In the Head 4.9/5 6. Know Your Enemy 5/5 7. Wake Up 5/5 8. Fistful of Steel 5/5 9. Township Rebellion 5/5 10. Freedom 5/5

- 2nd best RATM record!

This is their debut record. I honestly as an activist, and emcee myself can say that this album teaches you about racial, and corrupt truthful history. Battle of Los Angeles is still the best and last masterpiece made. Zack de la Rocha was and is one of the sickest illest rapper/poet to this day. Tom Morello guitar riffs and technical effects are pretty amazing. Bullet in your head, Settle For Nothing, Know your Enemy, and Wake up are the best and more creative songs for this record. RATM is not Nu Metal. They are a mix of Alternative metal, Funk, Hip Pop, Rap, and Hardcore Punk.

- i remember...

i remember the day i heard this... heard in a record store in headphones... was blown away.... unbelievable how it's still fresh... a classic that will never become a classic

- Great Album!

This is a great album! Powerful, both with its strong guitar and rhythm as well as the well crafted lyrics. Join the movement!

- bad job i tunes

I think killing in the name shouldn't be explicit you can't even really hear the bad words!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Awesome

My favorite album of all time, rap metal : they built their own hill with this

- Riff rock royality

One of the best riff rock/guitar rock albums of the 90's/ever!

- RATM Self Titled

Possibly...Greatest...Album...Ever!

- Killing in the name (thanks GTA San Andreas)

Shooting peoples heads off, causing riots, and definitely in the car with Radio X on while the cops are on my tail while I'm running over people. Lolz! Overall, I'm still listening to this, and it's a taste that will never leave my tongue. Definitely kills the rap today with that Hollywood Undead, Linkin Park, and Rage Against the Machine mixing combination that brings you rock/rap. Or rapping rock. However you say it. But yeah, thank you, and Please give this a listen to, I bet you'll enjoy it. Unlike some people who don't care for it too much. Whatever style you're in. As for us, we like this style of music. . .

- I hate this album.......

.....Because it immediately overshadowed every rap-rock album ever, for the remainder of eternity. So few albums can so beautifully blend two genres that are so very different. There are tracks here that will make you rap and headbang at the same time. Testament fans AND Public Enemy fans will both find a lot to like here. the album opens with the single most awesome bassline ever, and then an amazing guitar riff that gives way to awesome rapping. Killing In The Name is THE anthem for all disillusioned Liberals (like myself), and no other song would take the same 8 lines and make such a great song out of them. Take The Power back is easily where the best rapping on the album lies, even if the instrumentals get glossed over a bit. Settle For Nothing abandons the rapping for just a brief, sublime moment and gives us a great, poignant-yet-terrifying song. Bullet In The Head is one of the album's weakest links, but that doesn't make it bad. That just means it's a 9.5 rather than a 10. If Take The Power Backis where the best rapping is, Know Your Enemy is a close second. Plus, in a thrilling shout-out to metal fans, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan shows up for a "cameo" during the bridge. How cool is that? Wake Up is mostly famous for being long, but I still think it's a genuinely good track. Fistful of Steel is the highlight, and opens up with a riff that is so good, Pantera would "borrow" it later for Five Minutes Alone. Truly awesome stuff, best track on the album. Township and Freedom sound a bit "samey", but again, not a bad thing. Rage never topped this, and never ever could, and for that reason I'm not mad they broke up.

- #bestratmalbum

A classic rage is a happy rage! @baby giggle@ try our new ratm diapers

- My favorite band of all time
