- Zoomish, not ELOish....

Long time ELO fan, and happy that there is more coming out. Unfortunately, all the years Jeff spent with talented muscisians that helped him as he guieded ELO's past, are just replaceable instruments in Jeff's mind. No doubt, Lynne was the leader, but the sound from Eldorado through Discovery, the members all contributed their unique bits. Bev's drums, Kelly's bass and occasional vocals, Mik's violin, Louis Clark's amazing string arrangements, and Mack engineering it all, while Jeff looked over his shoulder. The string section WAS the hit at the early live shows! With all the contributions Jeff has made in collaborations with others, I hope some day, he appreciates the talent that he had at his disposal with the members of ELO. This, like Zoom, is ok. The drums are light, and strings overly sythesized providing a sound that, well, feels constrained. I'll wait for a complete review once the album is out, but this song is lacking in some ways.

- It's the song-writing

This album is an unapolegetic callback to classic ELO. Songs like "When I Was A Boy", "When the Night Comes", "All My Life", "One Step At a Time", and the title track could each justifiably be on a ELO Best-Of album.

- ELO is back!

Zoom was a great album. The first three songsof Alone in the Universe suggest this will be as well. Is it Jeff Lynne? Yes. Is it ELO? Yes. Is it 1977 ELO? No. TImes have changed. That big, over-engineered, over-dubbed wall of sound from A New World Record and Out of the Blue doesn't work anymore. I'm glad Jeff continues to bring out great music, and I'm glad he continues to evolve. He has adopted a simpler, more pure and intimate approach, with enough of the old ELO tricks to let us know who this is. I love it.

- Not really an ELO album

I had very mixed feelings about this album. Apart from one or two songs it really sounds like a Jeff Lynne solo album with a few songs that sound like ā€œBā€ sides from a Traveling Wilburys album. The album is inconsistent and quite frankly a little boring. I understand wanting to use the ELO moniker for marketing purposes, but then the music should have been tailored that way. It still is nice to hear new music from a legend, but count me as a disappointed.

- Best!

I can’t stop listening to this album and being transported to another world. Music doesn’t get better than this!

- 14 years

After all this time what and uninspired effort. I'm starting to wonder if Louis Clark was more responsible for the ELO sound that we knew

- Picking up where ELO left off

It doesn’t sound like Out of the Blue by any stretch but, if ELO stayed together as a band, I’m sure this is the sound that would be heard. Most of the reviews are complaints about how it doesn’t sound like 1977 ELO. Musicians evolve in stylistic directions. Jeff Lynne’s music has evolved nicely and he found a way to modernize the ELO sound. The album is definitely great compared to 98% of the stuff out there today.

- Ole ELO!

Jeff Lynne’s hit making machine is back! Great stuff here. After a few listens you’ll be hooked. ā€œOne Step At A Timeā€ is just amazing… get up and move! Please Jeff, I can’t wait another decade for your next ELO album!!

- New fan of ELO

I was never a fan of ELO but I am now. This album stuck the first time I heard it on XPN. Worth every penny.

- Traveling Wilburs???

Sounds way more the Traveling Wilburys than ELO.

- I love ELO.

I love ELO, and I love Jeff Lynne. However, I’m not sure I love Jeff Lynne’s ELO. Either give me a Jeff Lynne solo CD… or give me an ELO CD. I wish Mr. Lynne would have just called this a Jeff Lynne CD and leave the ELO off. ELO was full of orchestra arrangements.. that’s what made ELO so special. This CD sounds like a home computer production. Where are all the instruments? The strings? Where’s that classic ELO sound?. It’s close in spots.. but not very consistent. I’m sure I will end up loving this CD. I certainly don’t hate it.. I just wish there was more. Give me more orchestra! I still think it’s good.. but I can’t give it a great rating.. not yet anyway.

- Can't wait!!

I'm so glad that Jeff Lynne continues to share his talent with the rest of the world. When I Was A Boy is beautiful and I can't wait for the rest of the album to be released!!

- Not ā€œTimeā€ but still pretty good.

Although ā€œTimeā€ is their masterpiece, this will suffice until they do a sequal. (its only been 30 years…) It seems a bit slow in parts but he’s still got that songwriting touch.

- A very short album

I bought the full album and found the album pretty short, although I worked through it and time can kind of fly that way. The sonic fabric seemed pretty similar throughout, but a definite highlight for me, one song that really grabbed my attention, was "One Step at a Time." Kudos to Jeff for playing all instruments, and so well. Buy this album if you want to support Jeff, but otherwise just grab a couple of individual tracks you like. "It's OK."

- new ELO

like many loyal ELO fans I have been waiting for this album.....and I am a bit disappointed. Since ZOOM Jeff has pushed the melancholy in his songs a bit too much and I find the up-beat, pop and fast tunes are lacking. In fact, if I did not have such a positive outlook on life I would slash my wrists to ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE.....hopefully he is working on a new album that makes up for the lost positivity and fun ELO once had - unless it is just the stage in jeff's life that determines which direction the tunes go

- Not your dad's ELO

I have been a fan of ELO since my teens in the 70's, and although I am happy to see another album, I am undecided about this one after only listening through it twice. This album does not have the energy of previous entries (Zoom) and there is no "Don't Bring Me Down" or "Sweet Talking Woman" type of tracks to be found here. The production is top notch, but there does not seem to be so much going on in the background ( a signature trademark) and I found the drums to be a bit weak sounding (much like on the new Bryan Adams). I wish that JL would have included Bev Bevan for those duties to make this album feel like aneven more special event. Kelly Groucett's harmony vocals are truly missed (RIP to him). To me this album seems like a cross between Armchair Theatre and Long Wave. I also picked up the Hyde Park Live BD at the same time and was completely impressed with how ELO sounded onstage with a full band. This is a rating based on first impressions, so it is subject to change.

- ELO is Back

ELO songs All Sound The Same Wheres the Songs Like Turn to Stone Black, Magic Woman Etc.

- Awesome Album !!!!

Excellent album !!! Would,nt expect any less from Jeff...great job...Love ELO and this is a winner like all his classic albums. By Mark K Nov. 13, 2015

- As good as ever

Very excited to see a new ELO album. Jeff's voice is in great form - he still has that smooth sound that makes you want to just keep listening. The album is well written and has a great 70's vibe - what more can you ask for. I would definitely go see ELO if they play my city (please, Jeff...play Montreal!!!)

- Great Album

I have been an ELO Fan since I first heard them in the 70's, and I glad Jeff is back and this album is amazing. I hope he Tours with this album.

- Love it!

Catchy quality music that's has the usual Lynne ability to hover around in your head long after you took out your headphones!

- Quality, pure undiluted quality.

Jeff's amazing talent shows in abundance with his latest, much overdue new ELO album. Echoes of the past rekindled in his unique style of orchestral dynamic sound that only can be Jeff Lynne.

- Dissapointed

I have been a fan of ELO for almost 40 years and was expecting a treat, but this is not the upbeat rock I was looking forward to. All the tracks sound much the same, quite depressing really.

- Poor

I’m a massive ELO fan but this is NOT an ELO album. It’s Jeff Lynne. If JL wants to bring out an album of new songs that’s fine but don’t call it ELO. This album sounds NOTHING like an ELO album that us fans grew up with in the 70’s and early 80’s. It’s not even a half good Travelling Wilbury’s album. Poor poor poor. Sorry Jeff. I love you but this is just not good enough.

- Disappointed

I so wanted to like this album but apart from When I Was A Boy, it's pretty disappointing. I think jeff lynne is an incredible talent but sometimes his sound dominates too much, and songs tend to sound the same these days. The ELO album, Time, was a masterpiece and demonstrated that he was capable of writing very diverse styles of songs. Unfortunately there's little diversity here. more of a Jeff Lynne album rather than an ELO one.

- I thought I was alone in the universe!

This is a great moment: another ELO album. You can just feel the ELO DNA coursing through what to the ear is a different sort of album. A few moans from folk who possibly want exactly the same each time but this is a great evolution of the sound and the man who is JL!

- Brilliant!

How many artists can say they have written every song on an album as well as produced every song and played every instrument? I can’t think of many.

- Hey Boy Blue

A great album. Got to remember that the ELO catalogue has changed markedly over the albums and each segment has its pluses. Like the variety that this album offers. It's one that grows on you.

- Easy Listen

Jeff Lynne at his best. Been far too long. Hope you tour soon. This album will played all day today and tomorrow.

- Trying to take the positives

ELO are the soundtrack of my life, I instantly love everything Jeff Lynne writes, however I'm wrestling with my conscious trying to love this album. Ok, nowadays Jeff wants simple and clean, and critics have always groaned about excess, but every song here sounds as though it took 5 minutes to write (1 minute for a genius like Jeff.) The lyrics are so poor, basically anything that rhymes, with the exception of When I was boy there's no thought in them at all (I keep screaming 'come on Jeff, say something profound! Anything!) The failed Zoom album was full of lyrical fun, grit and melancholy, the music had real craft, and the last 5 tracks are amongst his very best and very contemporary. This new album seems a rushed effort to make the most of the current raised profile. The positives: his voice is amazing considering his age, the production is as good as ever, super-polished, and the tunes are all sweet and catchy. They're definitely Lynne tunes. And of course, Jeff is touring again, and I can't wait to see him. Sorry to be negative, being a huge fan since the mid-70s I wanted this album to show the world how great Jeff is, and what they've been missing out on, it doesn't. Still love having new ELO tunes to play though, very grateful for that.

- The best Jeff Lynne ELO album ever

I'm a life long ELO fan. Jeff When the Night Comes fits me as if it was directly written for me. ELO I play weekly, these tracks daily. The best Jeff Lynne ELO album ever. Please, please tour, preferably South South west England or even a small venue. I'm desperate to see you live. I know you've had trouble before but this album is going to be mega. My sister got off with your son at a party in the 80s, I wished she had stayed with him just a little while so that I could see you tour in a VIP area.

- What a clever man

Great song writer and musician To appreciate it fully needs a lot of plays.

- Alone in the Studio more like

ELO ? Everything played and produced by Jeff Lynne, hardly the Electric Light Orchestra I once Knew. Maybe using the name ELO will sell more than yet another dull Jeff Lynne effort? This to me takes away from a once great discography

- It's even worse than Zoom

I cannot remember the last time I was so disappointed by an album release, the songs are dull, the drum sound is awful and the lyrics are just laughable, Dirty to the Bone is hysterically bad, did Jeff submit it for Steel Panther to record? I am a huge ELO fan but the name really should have been laid to rest after Balance Of Power,

- ELO

It’s Got to be god

- Stuck in a rut

Less 'Mr Blue Sky', more TravELOing Wilburys... A couple of great tunes but mostly mid-tempo chuggers. Sounds like a man on auto-pilot. Lacks the wit, imagination and even production of classic ELO. Disappointing after 14 years.
