I just purchased this, and I absolutely LOVE it. I'm a huge fan of all things Gordon Goodwin, and this particular volume of his trademark Phatness did NOT let me down. This is one of those albums you're going to want to listen to long after the holidays...so be prepared for a lot of strange looks. Standout tracks for me were Carol of the Bells, which paid a nice nod to Rippin' and Runnin' in the intro. That funky groove really sets up the mood for what turned out to be a spectacular ablum. Then we get to Do You Hear What I Hear, featuring Take 6. You can NEVER go wrong when Take 6 is on the gig. The horn riffs in between the scatting is really quite awesome. I also appreciated the treatment Goodwin gave to Somewhere in My Memory, or as most people know it as the tune from Home Alone. The relaxed groove and flute solo were such a great way to treat this tune and make it something new for all fans of the song. I could go on and on, but just buy it and you'll immediately fall in love with it. I bought 2 new Christmas albums this year. Gordon Goodwin and Count Basie. THere's no feeling like listening to the Count Basie Orchestra play some wonderful music, only to be followed by listening to a band led by someone who was clearly influenced by the Basie band and shares his passion and talents with us by putting out music of this caliber. Happy Holidays, thanks for the wonderful music, and as my title suggests, if Santa could see it to bringing me 5 more stars to give out, I will use them all on this album. 5 just isn't enough.
One of the most innovative yet familiar, comforting, exciting Christmas Albums to come out in the past 10 years! Most definitely get online and buy this Big Phat Boy! Gordon Goodwin's arrangement of Somewhere In My Memory is the standout track, featuring a soprano saxophone solo by the arranger himself and a gorgeous acapella section that is almost a musical 'thank you' to the style and orchestration of John Williams. A "must-have" for any Jazz-lovers Christmas Collection!!!
I watched this on the internet and right away knew I wanted to purchase this album. The Arrangements are tight, and everyone is on their “A” Game with this one. After listening to Glen Miller, Stan Kenton, and others do their Christmas Albums, this is a true breath of fresh air. Do your self a favor, get this album. You will not regret it!
I'm a lover of Count Basie style big band arrangements and Gordon Goodwin has produced a phenomenal album of both beautiful and lively songs. Definitely something to enjoy all year. Santa Baby is our favorite. Stellar arrangements and performances by the band. 5 out of 5
