Deep Purple - Machine Head

About Machine Head by Deep Purple Album

Machine Head is the sixth Deep Purple studio album. It was recorded at the Grand Hotel Montreux, Switzerland in December 1971 with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, and released in March 1972. The album is often cited as being very influential in the development of the heavy metal music genre. It is Deep Purple's most successful recording, topping the charts in several countries following its release. In 2001 Q magazine named it as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time. Machine Head is the subject of one of the Classic Albums series of documentaries about the making of famous albums. Machine Head was released on the multichannel formats Super Audio CD (2003) and DVD-Audio (2001). The conditions in which the original recordings were made are quite outstanding. Hiring the Rolling Stones Mobile One equipment and studios, the band recorded the entirety of the tracks in a Montreaux hotel facility, with no overdubs. The "Smoke on the Water" lyrics' citation "Frank Zappa and the Mothers" refers to Zappa's show at a nearby casino. The casino burned down a few days before the start of scheduled Machine Head recording sessions. A song entitled "When a Blind Man Cries" was recorded during these sessions, but not included on the album. Instead, it was used as a the B-side on the "Never Before" single. The song appears as a bonus track on the album's 25th anniversary edition. The supporting tour for Machine Head included a trip to Japan that would later become the classic double-live Made in Japan album.

- 5 STARS!!

Classic rock at it’s best. You are missing out if this is not in your collection.Listen to the entire album. If you only listen to the hits you are missing out. Listen and enjoy talent at it’s best.

- Deep Purple's best album.

Deep Purple at their best. No weak songs. Jon Lord really shines on this, especially on Highway Star and Lazy. Every band member shines on this. I think Blackmore's solo on Smoke On The Water is his best. Pictures of Home is another album highlight. I like all of the photos of the band. Blackmore really looks miserable, doesn't he? I also think it's the coolest he has ever looked. That stubble look was a good one for him. Back to the music, five of these seven songs are in my top ten for favorite Deep Purple songs. This album is a must have.

- Deep purple awesome

Awesome

- Its a crime

Simply put its a crime if you do not own this album. It is a masterpiece of heavy metal. Blackmore and Lord shine as they bring the thunder along with searing and powerful vocals from Ian Gillan.

- Machine Head

Richie Blackmore and his Stratocaster almost seems out if place in this group . The musicians like Jon Lord ,Roger Glover are as good as it get in a hard rock band that sometimes consider heavy metal leaders . So great musicianship with lame material like Highway star and the boring riff in smoke on the water coupled with Lame singing .

- Machine Head 1972

Machine Head, perhaps DP's most known album,is almost like a Greatest Hits colllection. All the songs are strong but honestly I don't want to hear Smoke On the Water ever again. 9.5/10

- Ritchie Ritchie

Ritchie Blackmore's best work will always be his career with Rainbow

- Deep Purple at their Best

Classic Purple ... this is the Rock'n Roll of the 70's I grew up on in High School. Never gets old. Buy it, its a standard among the classic rock.

- SMOKE ON ThE WATER

Great song rock and roll never dies. The guitar part is ironic everyone should know it!

- Gr8 one of DP’s early albums.

Besides missing the song, when a blind man cries, this album is superior in every way.

- Easily their best album!

"Smoke on the water" is what got me hooked on not only this band but the whole classic rock genre. The other songs are great too. My other favorites include "maybe I'm a Leo" and "lazy". Probably my all time favorite rock albums along with Zeppelin's physical graffiti.

- The prequel

This was the start for DP’s famous Made in Japan. The songs are great and solid development.

Purchased on my iphone through sound in settings. Thought I was getting a ring tone. Instead paid for a song I bought in 1973. Rip off

Machine Head Wiki

A machine head (also referred to as a tuning machine, tuner, or gear head) is a geared apparatus for tuning stringed musical instruments by adjusting string tension. Machine heads are used on mandolins, guitars, double basses, and others, and are usually located on the instrument's headstock. Other names for guitar tuners include pegs, gears, machines, cranks, knobs, tensioners, and tighteners. Non-geared tuning devices as used on violins, violas, cellos, lutes, older Flamenco guitars, and ukuleles are known as friction pegs, which hold the string to tension by way of friction caused by their tapered shape and the string pull created by the tight string.
