I love this song because it’s so inspirational. It teaches a lesson. If you fail at something and you just don’t do anything about it then nothing good will come from it. Get back up again and try and do it again. Like if you are studying fir a test. You think negatively about yourself and you fail, check your work before you turn it in or if you forget and you don’t get a good score try and fix the problems you got wrong to make your teacher proud. If you talk positively about yourself you won’t have to fix your sore because you probably did great! Think badly about yourself bad things will happen. This song lacks depth. If you are going to take a classic that has been covered many times over in many beautiful and creative ways , then you may want to do something a little better than this monotonous melargy. I kept waiting for some magic. I'm not talking about belting notes and guitar rifts, but give us a reason to listen. Artists like Bon Iver and Passenger have made many successful songs without extra complex variables. Simple can be good if it is executed well. This was not. This song felt more like mainsplaining than it did a duet. Perhaps if Kendrick could have been heard more than a few back dropped vocals and a 4 second solo before timberlake took over the show again with his single level contribution, isn't this song by Kendrick AND timberlake? It sounds like timberlake feat. Kendrick (barely). I expected more from this. Disappointed
