This album changed my life for the better. This is what musicals are all about. There is not one bad song on here.
Well, this is definately a must-have for any Sweeney Todd fan, BUT Michael Cerveris is VERY VERY VERY BAD at portraying emotion in these songs. He has a nice voice, but the only emotion he pulls off is rage. When he tries to be brooding or dark, he comes away sounding like a crybaby whos constantly on the verge of tears, constantly pouting. I still like it, especially because of Patti LuPone, but if you want music much more like the original sweeney todd, I encourage you to get the Movie soundtrack. Its amazing, and Johnny Depp (who isn't even a singer) has a nicer (or at least more easy to listen to) voice than Michael Cerveris by far. (And the orchestra is far better!) But still, if you already have that version, I encourage you to buy this (as this has some of the more original lyrics and a few of the songs the movie cut)
A good recording overall, great to listen to and has the best quality out of all the recordings of Sweeney Todd. However, the album is incredibly incomplete and by that I mean there are so many songs from the show that are missing such as 'Parlor Songs','Wigmaker's Sequence' and 'City on Fire'. There is a whole page of dialogue missing during Anthony's Johanna between Anthony, Turpin and the Beadle that is missing. These missing parts of the show are essential to telling the story of Sweeney Todd. On a more positive note Michael Cerveris's interpretation of the role of Sweeney Todd definitely rivals with that of George Hearn and Len Cariou in both singing and acting and Patti LuPone brings forth a phenomenal Mrs. Lovett and truly lives up to her great reputation in this cast recording. It was really hard for me to give this album four stars because it's a version that I myself cannot stop listening to and the quality of the singing is just so good, but what kills me is that it is so incomplete.
Sweeney todd is one of my favorite musicals. In any normal case, the orchestration would be very strong, with horns and organs, and such. This performance was live, with actors who could sing and play instruments at the same time. they were on a stage with minimum choreography and a forth-rate voice expectation. the only star who really shines in this play is Patti LuPone, who i am sure has played Mrs. Lovett many, many times. The performance by Johnny depp or The first recording with len perriou have much bigger orchestras. If you like minimaism, by all means buy this. i jsut don't reccommend it that highly.
I love Sweeney Todd, but the original Broadway was around a million times better.
I haven't heard the original Sweeney Todd entirely nor have I listened to this version fully. I have listened to the full soundtrack for the movie. Out of the three soundtracks, this has to be the worst I've listened to. Granted I've only heard the 30 second sound bites of this version and the origininal, but I really DON'T want to listen to anymore than that of this version. The articulation is annoying. Perhaps correct for singing but it's not part of the characters. What happened to characterization?? I hear none of that in any of the songs. I hear upscaled pompous people singing songs that were meant to be dirty, gritty and harsh. I'd rather listen to an amateur singer (Johnny Depp, no offense) sing Sweeney's lines over and over again rather than listen to this sewage. And I'd rather listen to the screeching of Angela Lansbury rather than Patti Lupone who has destroyed the part of Mrs. Lovett. I usually love Patti Lupone's voice (Sunset Boulevard, Evita) but Mrs. Lovett is not the part for her. So, I will not be purchasing this version of Sweeney Todd. Thank God I didn't buy it when it first came out on CD. I had contemplated it, wanting a version of Sweeney Todd to listen to having never heard it before but knew about the musical. I've wanted to listen to it since I was a girl some twenty years ago but truth be told the hand drawn cover of the original was a little unnerving. So when the movie came out, I knew it was time I finally "discovered" Sweeney Todd.
This is probably my favorite cast of this show, just replace Michael Cerveris with George Hearn, and you've got THE BEST cast of the show. Patti's voice is amazing, it's almost like seeing her emotions, and.. Well, who doesn't love Manoel? Anyways.... *blush* A really great recording
Whenever a classic broadway show once again returns to the stage, there are those who cling to the original so much they cannot accept a new idea. Then there are those who enjoy a new take on a classic idea. This revival is exactly what a revival should be: faithful to the themes and the concepts of the script and what made the original great, but innovative in its performance and open to new concepts. If you ever get the chance to see the show live, I would recommend it--the tone is almost claustrophobic, with only about seven actors shoved together with bizarre props and musical instruments in a very small space. They sing, act, and even play the instruments as they perform. I was sceptical, but was captured just as the rest of the audience was. Seeing Mrs. Lovett trounce around playing a tuba between her lines, yet treating the tuba as a part of her character rather than a hindrance was incredible. Always be open to new takes on classics. It certainly worked here. I would highly recommend this entire album, if only to hear LuPone's fantastic voice.
Ohhhhhh...! Patti! All that is needed to be said... <3
I would reccomend that you purchase the Original Cast Recording of this album. It, in my opinion, seems more vibrant. Patti LuPone is a marvelous singer, but I find her Mrs. Lovett boring compared to Angela Lansbury. With the new orchestration the song By the Sea just sounds like Ms. LuPone singing in a nightclub. It took me out of the moment.
This is honestly the best recording of Sweeney I've heard, great rich vocals as well as instramental music. The original with Landsberry is ok, but the motion picture recording is not worth your money.
I liked it, but you can't beat the original. Michael Cerveris is very talented and I think he would have shined in the original version of the production. I know his father personally but have never had the chance to meet Michael. Patti LuPone should stick to Evita. This role is far too comedic for her. Not only was her diction terrible, but she didn't sell it at all. Up against Angela Lansbury, LuPone sounds like a fifth grader. Over all, it was ok, but I didn't like the downsizing of the orchestrations. I give it 3 stars.
Hey itunes, make the movie, (Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Alan Rickman, you know that one) available for purchase!
Sweeney Todd is my top favorite of Sondhime's works. My town is putting on a local proformance of the show. Im planning on auditioning for the role of Toby. Im quite excited but i don't know if were doing the revised verson or the orignal. Well we'll find out.
It is! I have so many favorites, but This is truly the best. Also, the new NEW orchestrations make the complexities of the musical score obvious. I think that a troupe of actor-musicians really makes for an interesting show and if every musical had as good of music and plot as Sweeney Todd, then Broadway would truly be a wonderful place.
If you've only seen and heard the music from the movie "Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street", then you'll think it's pretty good. But if you prefer the broadway sound, this cd is the way to go! The cast is the best yet (except for the dream cast, which they do not have on audio)!
Sweeney Todd is a masterpiece of musical theatre; one of the greatest shows/scores ever written. Nothing will ever top the original Broadway cast recording with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury, but this revival recording has a lot going for it. That the show survives such a radical reinterpretation proves what a classic it is. A lesser recording of Sweeney Todd is like a lesser work by Monet, Renoir, or DaVinci -Maybe not the best-ever, but a brilliant piece of art nonetheless. iTunes now has the complete original cast available, this revival, and the new Tim Burton film version. If you can only afford one, buy the original Broadway cast. It will make you save up to buy this one and the film soundtrack as well. You can never get enough Sweeney...
Well this was just terrible the original Len and Angela were SOO much better!!
I don't mean to be pessemistic. I LOVE Sondheim, however, who would agree with me when I say that Tim Burton's movie was pretty sweet. I know it probably didn't have as much as this play does, but at least Sondheim did the music for it rather than that horrible Danny Elfman.
Long-time Sweeney Todd fan (oh god, 25 years now). For Sweeney or Sondheim afficionados, the orchestrations, particularly during "Epiphany" will knock your socks off. The fact that the actors are playing these instruments is astounding. It was so thrillingly staged and surprised at every turn. Brilliant. I love Harold Prince's (et al) original concept, but there is more than enough room in the world for another interpretation, especially when one is done as well as this revival.
I saw this production and was so flabbergasted at how amazing it was ... The simplicity of the instrumentation brought the lyrics even more forward ... I know people have an attachment to the 1984 production ... But even Sondheim said that this was how he saw it in his head ... Awesome cast recording!!!
that was great! i saw it twice!
I bought this CD a few days ago, a few months after I bought the movie soundtrack. These two are distinctly different, but amazing in their own ways. I will say that I prefer Johnny Depp's Epiphany and My Friends. But this is overall a great soundtrack that you will not want to miss. I do like how during A Little Priest, Mrs. Lovett and Sweeney Todd are laughing at themselves, something that does not happen in the movie.
I have seen the three major incarnations of this musical (film, original 70's version, and this revival). This version is the most confusing version onstage, and should only be seen after seeing the film so you know what is going on. As far as the CD goes, everything is fine until Patti LuPone chimes in. Her voice waivers during crucial harmonies and almost makes some segments unlistenable. I was fortunate to see the show on tour with Judy Kaye, who won a Tony for a role in The Phantom of the Opera. Luckily, she was MUCH better than LuPone. I would recommend the original recording or the film soundtrack, as their respective Mrs. Lovetts are much better.
A few months ago, I bought this CD. And I have to say, I was very hesitant, because I had never heard any music from this show before. I took it home and started listening to it. At first, I thought it was a little weird, which, I guess it sort of is. But, I fell in love with this soundtrack! Now, I just can't stop listening to it! It's simply astounding! For those you who are trying to decide which version to buy, it's this version. I've always enjoyed original broadway casts for musicals. Actually, all of my other musical soundtracks are the originals. Except this one. Personally, I enjoy Patti LuPone a lot more than Angela Lansbury. LuPone just has a simply stunning voice. Also, Michael Cerveris does a phenominal job with the role of Sweeney. All of the other parts are also sung superbly! Overall, an even better recording than the original!
Patti Lu Pone does not have the right voice, ether play it as miss Angela Lansbary(the best) or as the decrepit skeleton that is Helana Carter, this just doesn't sound right Also, she can't do a British acsent very well (and yes I'm a horrible speller)
This sounds jazzy...too jaazy. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for different interpertations, but this is just awful, it doesn't do the deepness and vengeul spit of the pain of the characters any justice. Bad interpertations of the characters, what happened to the orchestra, and oh my god what is with the frickin' piano?!!? I'm sorry, but for my good love of Sweeney, your better going for the angela lansbury/len cariou version or the MOVIE!
This is the most amazing version of Sweeney Todd ever! I know, it's not the origional version, but I feel sorry for the ppl who but the origional just for the sake of it being the origional. This is one that needs to be seen live to be understood. People complain about the lack of insturments, but the reason is that the actors play the insturments. ST definately looses some magic when you don't get to see Mrs. Lovett with a tuba, or Johanna with a cello, or Toby playing... everything. The vocals in this version are amazing. Buy it.
Michael Cerveris doesn't do it for me he can't sing that great. Patti Lupone ROCKS =]. Another down side is theres only ten instruments playing it sounds weak. By the sea is the best song on the cd but still isn't as good as the original.=0
WOW!!! Patti lupone has such an amazing voice! I never get tired of listening to her!
Okay; don't get me wrong!! I LOOOOOOVVVVEEEE sweeney todd.. ALOTT! It's one of my favorite musicals.. But this recording is....... BAD! The guy who plays Anthony.. I don't think is that good.. His version of Johanna is horrid. I hate it. I like the rest of them.. Mrs. Lovett, Johanna, Sweeney! The guy who plays sweeney puts a more operetic tone in it and it sounds good in the 2nd Reprise of Johanna. I don't reallly like the new orchestrations that much.. Its a lot of piano.. Don't dig it too much! I like the original broadway cast sound.. Its much more dark and creepy and it gives a sense of scariness. And I love Angela Lansbury. She's reallly good, you should check out that album instead. And the Movie one with Johnny Depp & Helena Bonham Carter is REALLLLLY good. One of my favorite movies. If this helped you click YEESSS and if not no. (:
The movie version of this is so much better, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter do a WAY better job singing than these people. I cannot stand Patti LuPone's voice!! The only thing she was good in was Les Miserables. egh, for the sake of your ears, buy the movie soundtrack version.
This star studded cast of the revival of the musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is very talented. The cast of 7 plays every character of the show and acts as the orchestra all at the same time. This requires alot of talent which most of the cast has, the exception being the broadway diva Patti Lupone, who plays Mrs. Lovett and serenades us in her tuba and percussion expertise. Her voice sounds like a cat who is having its toenails slowly ripped off and then being mutilated so it can be paked into some type of former dessert platter, adapted for diner (she instead should play mrs. mooney....). Patti's voice not only ruins every song she appears in her dull interpretation of the character interupts the action of the story. The most redeeming part of the album was the minimum orchestrations that are not commonplace in sondheim musicals. These small parts in the orchestra was what compells me to continue listening to this edgey revival of one of my most loved musicals
They show no emotion in any of these songs. They emphasize too much and just did poorly in the recording. =( Personally, I find the movie, Sweeney Todd, with Johnny Depp, was much better. Almost all these songs are on that album and are 10 times better. Trust me on this.
I was painfully and utterly disappointed at this. What is this? The orchestrations, in my opinion, were supposed to be loud, paced, wonderful, and what happened to this cast? I can't take the time: I'd be at my computer for several days, and I lack several days. I'll make it trite: GET THE ANGELA LANSBURY WITH LEN CARIOU. It's older and better by so much.
Does it make sense that the album is priced greater than the sum of its parts? There are 17 songs..... priced at $0.99 a piece... but the album total is selling for $19.99 ---- this makes no sense. Perhaps price the album at $9.99 to get people to buy the whole thing? Idiots.
I loved the music, it's so catchy. It was stuck in my head for hours but I never complained. My favorite songs are "A Little Priest" and "The Worst Pies in London." I would have loved to see it on Broadway but I managed to see it in San Fransico and it was just amazing. I would definitly see it again if I have the chance.
I'm not really too wild about this recording, or the staging of the production. It felt like an excuse to get away with low-budget, and the dumbed-down orchestration for minimal orchestra hardly did the music justice. Patti LuPone was fine, but I honestly still prefer Angela Lansbury by a long shot. The same goes for Sweeney; Cerveris is okay, but his tendency is to become difficult to understand when his singing gets more intense; he growls and mumbles a lot. I preffered George Hearn and Len Cariou, personally. Otherwise, I found the casting to be strange. Pirelli doesn't really work as a female part; it takes the high notes and makes them sound less impressive, and less interesting. Johanna was fine, and Anthony was fine with the exception of my personal problems with what I think the part should sound like. Overall, I prefer the fuller orchestra with a full-sized stage and set. This didn't do much for me, but I know plenty who love it. It really comes down to preference, but all the people I know who have gotten to know both the original Broadway cast recording and this New Broadway cast recording have all preferred the older of the two. However, in my opinion, the one character who I prefer in this one to the original is Tobias, who was played by an actor with a particularly whiny voice in the original Broadway cast. "Not While I'm Around" deserves a good voice, like the Tobias in this recording. I do have a peculiar habit of mixing and matching songs from different recordings of the same shows, and I would recommend the same to anyone else, for those reasons.
I dont want to be rude or anything but I think the soundtrack from the movie is better.
The iTunes review seems to imply that there is something wrong with a full orchestra in this Sondheim masterpiece, and that toning down the musical elements is a good thing. That is just nonsense, as Mr. Sondheim seemed to have no problem with a very lush orchestral accompaniment in the recent film. Sweeney Todd is a great score, and great theater, and it is only enhanced by the colors of an orchestra, which fully bring out the genius of Sondheim's composition. It is ridiculous to state that one needs to pare down the musical side to improve the drama; they go hand in hand. (Plus if you are buying a recording, you are only experiencing it from the aural side anyway!) I have nothing against this chamber version, but saying it is preferable to the full version it is like saying that Tristan und Isolde is as good with a string quartet and a few winds. It just isn't. Buy the original version with Cariou and Lansbury, and the full orchestra.
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???!!! Everyone on here versings or undersings, or sounds too old for their part! Ugh, the original cast and play was soooooo much better. Johny Depp did a better job than Michael Cerveris. EW!
not saying the movie was bad, but... Depp could NOT sing. Sry to depp fans out there.
To me this feels like a watered down version of Sweeney. where's the explosion of the orchestra after he yells "at last my arm is complete again!" Also, I love Patti, but she does NOT make a good Mrs. Lovett. As far as i'm concerned, Angela Lansbury is the only Mrs. Lovett there has ever been. She created that role, and she has performed it the best. No other actress who has ever played Mrs. Lovett has even come close to Angelas. She brought life and humor to the play. The first time I heard "A little Priest" by Angela and Len I nearly died of laughter; It's a sweet little old lady singing about killing people and turning them into pies, it's genius satire. But no one plays Mrs. Lovett has the sweet little old lady anymore. They play her has this creepy, dreary, depressing woman which makes for a very BORING story (I'm lookin at you too Helena). Overall it's still an alright recording but I would recommend the original any day.
Outstanding!!!!!!
Patrick Doyle is a MASTER at what he does. This was fantastic, he knows how to direct a good show. Epiphany, is, honestly, scary. A Little Priest is good as some comic relief. You need to buy the whole album. It's that good.
I ADORE this album. I am a huge Broadway fanatic, and when I saw this, it was a nice change, considering two weeks before I'd just seen Legally Blonde (Totally gag me with a spoon. >.<) Back to the album. This musical is dark. D-A-R-K, dark. But it is so wonderfully done that it really doesn't matter. So what, the man's a serial killer, he can sing whilst he slices your throat! Heh. But really, this is a great album. And I hope and pray with the movie edition (JOHNNY DEPP CAN SING!!!!! *Swoon*) that it gets the respect it deserves. "The demon barber of Fleet Street....." ~Kio, the Angel of music
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! In a world of jacked up revivals, I thought this one was pretty good. Although, no one can ever really top Angela Lansbury as Ms. Lovett. I thoroughly enjoyed this recording. It still has its Sondheim flare.
no offense, but these actors just sound so phony to me. nobody really sounds like that when they talk, so no one would actually sound like that when they sing. it just seems way to overdone. you will probably think i'm an idiot who knows nothing, but i thought the cast in the movie, however different it was from the play, was way better and way more believable than these people who sound like they are trying way too hard.
wow! i really love this album. in my oppinion, i think its wayy better than the movie. :D although johnny depp can sing i think this guy can sing too! this album is different from the motion pictures. This one sounds a lot more accurate. but when i downloaded this on itunes. it didnt put it in order on my ipod :(
Benjamin, Johnny, and Len have 3 totally different vioces, but the scary-emotional way about them has the same pull on me... i get the same feelings-- like omg he so scary-emotional, "i feel so bad for this guy, but he lost some his marbles", all 3 men have the power to control my emotions around this sad story, and they are all excellent actors. Reviewers may hate me for this, but i did not like Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett. Angela has an wonderful vioce--that i love btw (amazingly wide range) but I think that she played her character a bit obnoxiously, and her accents great but it feels sometimes like shes trying to make fun of it..like shes not taking it seriously..sorry my opinion. Patti Lupone is a great singer, but i wish she would've thickened her accent...in my opinion i think mrs lovetts cockney accent should be alot like Eliza's in My Fair Lady..thick but not too thick. Helena's approach to her character seemed to fit right to me-with the setting and the time period, women were usually quiet and content. Johnnys visage and feel playing sweeney feel right to me too..the slitted eyes..and the--how should i say--quietness and the eyes with revenge all showed his anger in a non-explosive way, you can still recognize the emotions he's feeling and they hit you. Len is a marvelous actor and singer but i believe that he was overdramatic and should have dummed it down just a little bit. In the movie. I was disppointed that some songs were cut out of the film..like the duet with Anthony and Johanna...but then when i watched the movie and imagined them singing it--the songs that were cut didnt seem like they wouldve fit right. I'm really sorry if this offends anyone and please i really dont want to start arguments, this is just my opinion--i DO like the original and the revival cast...but i truely think that the movie cast potrayed the characters better and I like it the best.

Since 1979 when it was made into a Broadway Musical, Sweeney has lived on to become a smash-hit movie with Johnny Depp and this album is a feast for lovers of the musical! If you thought that Depp and Helena were good singers then these guys are truly awesome. This one also contains some great songs which weren't in the musical like 'Kiss Me' and another version of 'Johanna'. My favourite tracks are 'The Worst Pies in London', 'A Little Priest' and the 'Epiphany'. For $12.99, I stongly recomend you buy this. Pure class for Sweeney, Pie and Blood Lovers!!
I love this album. Sweeney Todd is, by far, my favourite musical. Very beautiful music. My favourite tracks would have to be, "Ah, Miss" "Kiss Me" and "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" (Which are basically the ones not in the film... although there are others- I'm afraid I've listened to the movie soundtrack so many times I've begun to prefer the ones I don't have as regular listening acess to. If that makes sense!) And a side note, I would very much appreciate it if itunes added the original stage production soundtrack- with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. Thats all for now!
