Poetry is an intriguing song that is growing on me. I am surprised that it took 16 years to make it onto a Ray Davies album. Davies wrote about the song in his 2013 book of the same name as this album, Americana. In 2001 he recorded it originally not at Konk Studios, but at Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studio in Ripley, Surrey, England, near where Ray was staying at the time. On p. 29 Davies writes, “Then there was a tune called ‘Poetry,’ about someone lost in a shopping mall in middle America, buying clothes from retail chains, eating at fast food restaurants, only to have the singer deliver the venomous line, ‘And in a shopping mall somewhere you’ll fall down on your knees crying out loud, ‘Where is the Poetry?’”
Ray Davies and The Jayhawks. you can't beat that.
Sounds a lot like the Dire Straits

Ray actually can still write and be original!! Take tips Pete, McCartney, Jagger, Rod..........
First released track is awesome and further cements Kinks leader Ray Davies as the iconic voice of a generation. An undervalued treasure that gets better with age.
I have fallen in love with this album! It took a few listens and now there's no turning back. I am 61 years old and when I listened to the music I heard elements from the 60's that Ray Davies and Dave Davies created; they permeate this album. He left room for Dave but The Jayhawks have done a beautiful job interpreting Ray's vision. Yes, the lyrics sometimes are pedestrian, but when I listened to the storytelling, I got it; Ray is telling us about his journey to America in the 60's and the love affair that developed. He brought me back to the place that grew between music and my life, and as twilight sets in, he reminds me of what captured me as a youngster and never let go. I'm glad he fell in love with America; he and The Beatles and The Stones made me fall in love with England. Have a listen.
What a dream combo-Ray Davies and the Jayhawks! The songs are great and tell the story of the Kinds coming to America.
I can’t wait for this CD! April 21st can’t get here soon enough! The first two songs are very good. I absolutely love Rock N Roll Cowboys. Classic Ray Davies!
Ray was great at one time, but obviously doesnt have the chops to sing anymore!

Ray back to his best just bought this he is so talented, Voice a little creaky at times but the lyrics make up for that
A peach of an album. You still have it Ray. Oops sorry Sir Ray
Sir Ray Davies has been writing great songs for over fifty years now (alright with some exceptions!) but he just keeps on coming up with them. I have been a fan all of those years and have (nearly) everything he has done. This latest offering is right up there with the best. A fantastic album. Well done Sir Ray!
Despite being a fan of both the Kinks and the Jayhawks, and a longstanding admirer of Ray Davies, there is nothing here of merit. It is difficult to see where the other reviewers are coming from with their 5 star ratings. It can't be the result of objective listening.
Saw the kinks live in 64 loved them since. A brilliant album full of the old Ray Davies.
Gets better and better after repeated listening.
Sir Ray has received plaudits throughout his long and great career, however this is an exceptional piece of work. It works on so many levels - if you've read his book Americana, this is the musical illustration to go with it; if you haven't, it's a journey through American music and America from the eyes of the green Englishman. However, that's not even half of it. The musical references are beautiful. Ray has turned magpie and there's petty much every American genre here - grunge, blues, folk, country (traditional and contemporary) rocks riffs, and that's just after the first two listens! Genuinely, an inspired work.
