Fleetwood Mac - Heroes Are Hard To Find

About Heroes Are Hard To Find by Fleetwood Mac Album

Although this was Bob Welch's last album with the band he had worked with since 1971, it sounds like he's at his peak. Pared down to a foursome for the first and (as of 2002) only time since the addition of Danny Kirwan, both Welch and Christine McVie contribute some of their finest songs. Bolstered by sympathetic self-production and imaginative, often aggressive arrangements that include brassy horns on the title track (a blatant but failed attempt at a hit single), the album is one of their most cohesive yet diverse. Welch continues his fascination with UFOs in a sort of follow-up to Mystery to Me's "Hypnotized" called "Bermuda Triangle" and even heads into a spacy Hendrix "Third Stone From the Sun" groove on "Coming Home." Christine McVie is in wonderful voice on her own ballads like "Prove Your Love" but outdoes herself on the magnificent "Come a Little Bit Closer," a stunning track whose grandeur is heightened by strings and McVie's majestic piano. It's a hidden classic and pedal steel by the Flying Burrito Brothers' Sneaky Pete Kleinow is an unexpected and perfect addition to the album's most fully realized tune. Welch's folk-pop "She's Changing Me" is one of his most upbeat, memorable melodies, offset by the rocker "Silver Heels" and his closing "Safe Harbor," a knowing nod back to Peter Green's atmospheric work on "Albatross" and his contributions to Then Play On. McVie's haunting rocker "Bad Loser" is reinforced by the propulsive rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, both adding tense bite to even the most tender of ballads. Welch left soon after the album's release, and the group went on to bigger and better things, but Heroes is a minor gem that retains its effortless pop charms and contains some buried jewels in the extensive Fleetwood Mac catalog. ~ Hal Horowitz, Rovi

- The great Bob Welch with Fleetwood Mac

What a terrific album; this being the last LP featuring Bob Welch, who made the unfortunate mistake of quitting the band which (as we all now know) went on to overwhelming success with the addition of Buckingham and Nicks. Imagine how the band would have done with four outstanding songwriters in the mix. There are many many great tracks on this album, not to be missed.

- Goodbye to great music!

So, you go to a concert expecting to hear this amazing album performed, and out walks Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks...... the new Fleetwood Mac. Great pop, sure. Lindsey could not play any of the licks from the old albums, especially this one. Total shock! Mick, Christy, John still the same; the best band ever. Changes occurred over the years, getting better and better. Then the jump to pop, and of course mega stardom. Proud of them. That said, all of us miss the great musicianship and intricate vocals. This was where Bare Trees and all the rest led to. It deserves a listen, but not by the new found pop wanderlust. Bob Welch....... we miss you.

- Lost classic

Even if this album only existed for Bermuda Triangle and She's Changing Me, it would deserve the price. Welch brought such a pop sensibility to this iteration of Fleetwood Mac. R.I.P.

- Heroes are hard to find

Edge of the cliff of the the prgressive era of Welch who carried on their legacy for the last time on this. It is indeed a gem in the vast category of their music.

- One of the band's best

I bought this album when it first came out in 1974 and loved it immediately. It was my first introduction to Fleetwood Mac, which, of course, would morph into a very different band with the addition of Buckingham and Nicks with the next album. But the songs on Heroes are all excellent. And after all these years, I think it is still my favorite.
