Gregg Allman - Southern Blood (Deluxe Edition) Reviews
Sad yet joyful
An amazing conclusion to an incredible career. A great collection of songs ( mostly covers) that Allman sings perfectly. But knowing that he made these choices, knowing the end was near is so sad.
I read he always wanted to cover Jackson Browne's Song For Adam, because it reminded him of his brother, Duane. Producer, Don Was said it was the last song Allman recorded and rightly so, ends the album.
I think Gregg would be justifiably proud of Southern Blood. Good listening. Hope he and Dwayne are together again.
Hard to add more to what's already been said, except this may be the Purest of Gregs legacy... I have a memory attached to many of his songs, will miss him and all of the Brothers.
black muddy river, chilling
simply chilling to hear Greg sing 'black muddy river' , it was the last song jerry garcia sang in concert,,rest in power, your music is your legacy...
Boy, Oh Boy
"You never miss your water until your well runs dry." Gregg, we sure are going to miss you. A true force of nature gone right before our eyes, one of the true "talents" that has graced this land. I loved listening to the old Allman Brothers tunes rearranged with those horns, Gregg. This latest it a testament to your soul and talent. Rest in Peace, brother.
His Farewell, His Best
Standing on its own without any back story, this album is amazing. However, when you consider everything that surrounds it – Allman's passing, the knowledge that this would be his last musical statement as it was being made, and the meticulous song selection - "Southern Blood" takes on a legendary career-defining status immediately. His only original song (co-written with Scott Sharrard) "The Road is My One True Friend" created an emotional connection for me on first listen. "I hope you're haunted by the music of my soul, when I'm gone" may be the best single line ever. I think it's the sentiment every aging songwriter thinks in their heads and feels in their hearts. Don Was' production brought out the best in Allman's amazing voice. The one sad note about "Southern Blood" is that Allman passed knowing he would never be able to share these songs on the road, which, was his "one true friend."
As a long time Allman Brothers Band Fan, Gregg's death broke my heart. When I heard he had been working on Southern Blood right before his death it amazed me. I had to preorder it. I now listen to it almost every day and it's become a favorite album. The songs can be sad in ways but also very uplifting!
