Charli XCX - Pop 2

About Pop 2 by Charli XCX Album

Pop 2 is the fourth mixtape by English singer and songwriter Charli XCX, released on 15 December 2017 by Asylum Records. Executive produced by A.G. Cook of PC Music, sessions for the mixtape began just several months before its release and featured a wide variety of guest contributions. The project received praise from music critics, and was backed by the single "Out of My Head" featuring Alma and Tove Lo. The recording was to feature a contribution from rapper Lil Peep, which was shelved following his death in November. Collaborations which appear on the record include singer Carly Rae Jepsen, Brazilian artist Pabllo Vittar, Estonian rapper Tommy Cash, German pop singer Kim Petras and Korean-American hip hop artist Jay Park among others. Charli stated that "this mixtape isn't necessarily about me – it's really about giving everybody their moment to own the song." The first single from Pop 2, "Out of My Head" featuring Tove Lo and Alma was released on 8 December 2017 along the pre-order of the mixtape on digital platforms. The song "Unlock It" featuring Kim Petras and Jay Park was premiered on 11 December 2017 on radio program Beats 1, being named its release day's World Record. Another track called "I Got It" featuring Brooke Candy, Cupcakke and Pabllo Vittar was released on 13 December 2017 as the final promotional single before the mixtape's official release. At review aggregate site Metacritic, Pop 2 has an average score of 84 out of 100, based on 8 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". Meaghan Garvey of Pitchfork, who gave the album an 8.4/10, called it "the best full-length work of both Charli and PC Music’s respective careers," opining that "though Pop 2 sounds like the future, even more delightful is the way it hybridizes sounds from the past two decades of weirdo electronics." Ludovic Hunter-Tilney of Financial Times wrote that Charli XCX "stands out as a paragon of progressiveness," opining that "on the majority of the tracks Charli and her producer Cook deploy their meta-pop tactics with a skilful sense of dramatic engagement."

- Garbage

Garbage, someone take Charli XCX back who is an auto tune monster & give us back Ashlee Simpson thanks!

- Exactly what it purports to be

The second coming of pop music

- This music is sex to my ears!!!

Love the last track.

- Pop2 owns this century oops

Each bass drop slaps some sense it to ya after you almost unlock your car for an odd British lady

- AMAZING

After listening to this album several times through, I have noticed that this album is pretty similar to True Romance (which happens to be one of my favorites). The difference that I noticed between the two is that Pop 2 is a lot more electronic. It’s honestly such a brilliant album and I think that everyone should give it a try. ❤️❤️❤️

- Still listening to this day

Yea I love this mixtape

- Pop music needs her

A masterpiece of pc music!

- Xcx did that 😔👏🏼

Pop perfection

- I got it

Tbh is such a song when you’re driving around shopping looking cute

- Fresh

This mixtape breaths new life into the stale, overplayed pop of today

- Tears!!!

This song makes me so sad I want to cry but also makes me so happy!

- #1 angel

Not the best

- Hard to get through

I heard ‘Backseat’ and loved it so I decided to check out the rest of the album. It was actually painful to get through and left me with a headache...

- Auto tune garbage

Auto tune crap 👎🏻💩💩💩💩💩

- Holy...

Mainstream? Forget it. This is art.

- Queen goddess

When I heard Tove Lo I knew it was going to be an amazing album.

- Carly Rae Jepsen brought me here!

i'd definitely give this album 5 stars no sweat, why? Cos She's got "Carly" on it!! 😍😘

- Nooo

No no no why auto tune?

- :)

Pabllo Vittar is killing in 'I Got It'. In love with her/his vocals.

- Pop Music Upgraded

Charli just reinvented pop music. What a legend 💙

- Her best work since True Romance....

It might be a mixtape but it's got a cohesive production style that makes it essentially a proper full length. It's better than Sucker or the last Sophie produced EP by a mile. This is the sound of future pop and it's glorious. Way to go, Charli.

- Queen of Bangers

She just gets pop and makes it her b*tch - banger after banger. Her features are always on point, production was stellar, and you can really sense the emotion in the songs. Charli gives it her all and that’s why she’s next level. A lot of pop girls can’t relate 💅🏼⚡️💥

- Queen Of Collaboration

I first heard Out Of My Head in recordings of SOPHIE live shows back when it was only her on production and only ALMA on vocals. While it was great, it's wonderful to see how it's evolved into the version on this mixtape. Most people haven't heard the mixtape (although I'm sure some of the people who hacked her google drive have some of it), but based on the production credits and features, we're gonna be in for a real treat. Update a million years later: Definitely one of the best releases of the decade tbh.

- BEST RELEASE OF 2017

wowwwwwww

- 5

queen of pop. that’s all.

- Moments of brightness among muddy thoughts

This is one of her lesser mixtapes, with Number 1 Angel released earlier in the same year having a better showing of her depth as an artist. That said, if you take her best songs from her various compilations over the last 2 years, there’s a solid record, so there’s not much to complain about. There are moments of greatness on this mixtape along with half finished ideas that had potential but fell short. At her best, she sounds like a twenty-something girl looking for love while surviving the work place and life in London. There’s a hidden optimism in her despair, which brings you back to a time when the hourglass was full. It’s an adventure; she dates around, she sits in her apartment waiting for life to find her, she gets drunk with her friends, she goes out dancing. It never culminates in a proper ending, though, finishing with the phrase “I’ll blame it on your love.” She ends where she started, but it’s not satisfying. Why does she choose the wrong guys? As the protagonist, we know Charli. She wants a London flat, trips to the Caribbean, a puppy, kids, but not right away. She settles in the moment and then kicks herself when she sobers up. What’s missing is the allure of the Kurt Cobain frontman she falls for at the club. He sends red flags, but she can’t get past his charm; she shares his dreams. But she’s out working for it and he’s living on his good looks. Without the listener falling for his illusion, the album is not complete. Every time you get too close I run, I run away And every time you say the words I don't know what to say Back, back to the beginning, really wish that I could change I do, I do, I do [Chorus] I blame it on your love I believe Charli XCX. She wants to marry the nice guy but she’s afraid because the antagonist is a dreamer. He’s not really a dreamer, he’s a fraud; it’s her dream. The nice guy would support her, if only she listened... I know the context of this chorus from her past work, but it’s missing on this mixtape. Note: On further listen, the women on this mixtape may potentially be the guy she falls for, if you read it from that perspective. They say somewhat crude things and she says the same thing over again, like “we’re done.” Then comes the dance magic outro with million dollar synths and she’s back. That’s clever. I think the point would resonate more if cupcakke said some horrible things then broke out into a sing-song melody, the way thug rappers do. Like, maybe he’s not that bad... Some of the women do sing, but Charli eclipses their performance, which is maybe the point. As a third party, you’re asking, why would you fall for that guy?

- Auto-tuned mess

Am I the only one who hears all that auto-tune? Sounds bad!! I could do better if I had to use all the auto-tune that I could.

- Gorgeous 💕

Really beautiful Mixtape, Backseat, Lucky, Tears & Track 10 are great midtempo’s and capture Charli’s emotions perfectly. While I Got It, Femmbot, & delicious are more Loud, Brashy and just pure BOPS. CHARLI DID THAT 🔥🔥🔥 need an album next year, keep serving QUALITY 👌

- Boys?

Where is the song Boys?! And why so many features?

- Vital and cathartic pop music

One of the best pop albums ever made. I wish more pop music out there was this goddamn vital and cathartic. Captures the perfect expression of being messed up from love, partying hard and living life to its painful and beautiful fullest.

- Charli XCX..... wow

Pop perfection

- Jay Park

Unluck it is my jam, so glad she got jay to be apart of it.

- Incredible

My favorite Charli project – says a lot since she has a great discography! But Pop 2 has the perfect blend of pop bops and highly climactic tracks, with an experimental edge.

- Her Mind!

She’s So Powerful! Overall just Amazing. The Risks Taken Paid Out. Sister Snapped!

- Queen of the future

She’s a genius

- YAS!

Best Charli yet <3

- Excellent

Wow. Charli snapped. AG cook snapped. Carly snapped. Mykki snapped. Currently transcending space and time. Wig

- Charli’s music is always so fresh

Charli Xcx is so talented I mean first off she included ALMA, Tove Lo, CupcakKe, SOPHIE, MØ, Brooke Candy, and Kim Petras.... Charli’s a queen for that. Every song on this album is a banger.

- YESSS

I don’t know what to call this kind of music but it’s bomb af!

- One hit wonder

She hasn’t realize her only hot song was as a featured artist on Fancy song with the other one hit wonder!

- On REPEAT.

I don’t think there’s a song on here that I don’t like! The music is different and upbeat and Charli's voice is flawless 💓💓

- Yeah okay

It’s decent pop music, A little repetitive and irritating at times.

- THE BEST ALBUM YET!!!!💖

Charli is an amazing writer this is my fav album that she wrote I am such an angel#obsessed

- Amazing

Kim Petras, MØ, Carly Rae Jepsen, Mykki Blanco, Tove Lo, ALMA.....wow. The collabs are great, and the solo tracks are incredible. Some of XCX's best work, if not her best.

- AMAZING album ✨🖤🔥🔥🔥🖤✨

I seriously cannot get enough of ‘Pop 2’! I have been listening to it non-stop since the day it was released & I haven’t slowed down since! If you haven’t heard any of this album yet (same goes with ‘Number 1 Angel’) or Charli XCX in general you are missing out BIG time trust me! I also cannot get enough of Charli’s new singles that she has been releasing recently so be sure to check those out as well! I give this album a SOLID 10/10 stars for sure, hands down, no questions asked! 🖤😍🎶🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

- Not as good as N1A

Not as good as the last one but still some bops.

- Underrated

Charli XCX is a pop legend those whistle notes on lucky cracked my skull

- Not for me

Really disappointed in this. I was so hyped for Pop 2 when Out of My Head came out then and I loved it but then I heard all of this :( Sounds like a bunch of random noise. There’s only about 3 songs I like off this.

- I love Charlie but

This album is trash tbh. I love her more than her music

- Charli Xcx’s Pop2 Pushes FuturePop

Charli Xcx is back with a perfect blend of slick production from her PC Music friends and sweet choruses to put Sia to shame. The unbridled joy and pain that are projected at points of this album point to a greatness I don’t think we have seen in pop music in a long time. By being able to release the kind of music she wants, I think she has blossomed into a more realized picture of herself than ever before. Charli isn’t the only one who shines on this record, the producers allow each artist to shine in their own and own their part of the song as if Charli were featured in their mixtape! Essential Tracks: In No Particular Order Track 10- My personal favorite song of the entire horrible year of 2017. ‘Nuff said. Out of My Head feat. Tove Lo & ALMA- A bouncy track with a killer hook to keep you coming back. I Got It feat. Brooke Candy, cupcakKe & Pabllo Vittar- A completely unexpected group of LGBT pop icons get together for a banger with grimy trip-hop influences. Definitely a divisive track. Delicious feat. Tommy Cash- A true synthpop jam with heavy 80s influences sound wise and a guest artist who begs to be listened to on repeat. The build in the drop for this song is one of my favorite parts of this project. Backseat feat. Carly Rae Jepsen- 1:00 into this song and I was wondering why this team up hadn’t happened years ago. These artists complement each other insanely well, playing off the riffs of the other in a way that highlights the skill they have for giving pop music the attitude it deserves. Porsche feat. Mø- A song that seems to me perfectly poised to slide into radio sooner rather than later. Mø gives one of the catchiest vocal performances on Pop 2. Unlock It feat. Kim Petras & Jay Park- A dreamy synth-layered soundscape sampling one of my favorite songs from A.G. Cook, “Beautiful.” Charli’s voice becomes so layered in the production soundscape I forgot she was contributing to the background rhythm by repeating the title over and over. Femmebot feat. Dorian Electra & Mykki Blanco- The most mainstream sounding track off the project for me, still managed to have me dancing along to the extremely catchy beat. Also big props to Charli for owning the commercialization of women pop artists in this song. Overall: A perfect pop release without a dull moment. Charli has fun on this and it comes though.
