The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationship...

About A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships by The 1975 Album

A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships is the third studio album by English band The 1975. It was released on 30 November 2018 by Dirty Hit and Polydor Records. Initially titled "Music for Cars", the album was intended as the follow-up to "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It". The term later denoted an era encompassing both their third album and "Notes on a Conditional Form", released in 2020. The band halted recording of the first part after lead singer Matthew Healy left for a drug rehabilitation clinic in Barbados, seeking treatment for his heroin addiction. Following the singer's return, the band spent several months completing the album in Northamptonshire and Los Angeles. A maximalist experimental album "A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships" combines rock and pop music interspersed with ambient interludes. Eschewing the 1980s-influenced sound of its predecessor, the album embraces a desolate soundscape informed by electronica. Noted for its incorporation of various genres, the record heavily draws from jazz, R&B, electropop, indie rock and Britpop, among others. The songs are characterised by their electronic beats, gospel choirs, neo-soul horns and downtempo rhythms. Guest contributions are featured from the London Community Gospel Choir, No Rome, the Japanese House and Roy Hargrove. Exploring the role of digital communication and the internet in contemporary life "A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships" is a concept album connected by several over-arching threads. The album serves as a cautionary political statement, questioning the implications of society's relationship with technology and its impact on millennials. It marks a shift in Healy's portrayal of heroin addiction, embracing sincerity and honesty to speak on the desolation it causes. Eschewing metaphors and ambiguity, the album utilises black humour, simple lyrics and straightforward storytelling, covering dark topics such as nihilism, suicide, depression, anxiety, dissociation, trauma, cynicism and death, among others. "A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships" was preceded by the singles "Give Yourself a Try", "Love It If We Made It", "TooTimeTooTimeTooTime", "Sincerity Is Scary" and "It's Not Living (If It's Not with You)". The album received widespread acclaim from contemporary music critics, who praised the production quality and portrayal of modern life, with some critics calling it a millennial version of Radiohead's OK Computer. In addition to appearing on numerous publications' year-end and decade-end lists, it won the British Album of the Year at the 2019 Brit Awards. The album became the 1975's third consecutive number one on the UK Albums Chart, and was later certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). It also peaked at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart and attained top-ten positions in several countries, including on Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. To further promote the album, the band embarked on their Music for Cars Tour.

- Awesome

All the songs are great

- Absolutely Stunning✨

On my first listen through, I wasn’t really a fan of most of the songs, I only really liked the singles and Its Not Living if its not With You. However, after listening through the album a couple of times, the songs really started to grow on me! I honestly haven’t stopped listening to Surrounded by Heads and Bodies and The Man Who Married a Robot/Love theme. They creeped me out at first but the more I listen the more intrigued I become. I absolutely love this album!!

- Love❤️

All the songs are great I JAM ALL DAY TO THEM❤️❤️ I love the 1975 so much and I tell all my friends about them

- An Album That Deserves More Love

If you honestly think there’s only one good song on this album you haven’t been listening. Or maybe you just don’t understand what you’re listening to.

- wow

truly one of the great albums of 2018. quite possibly the best 1975 album yet. I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) is one of the best songs they’ve ever written.

- 1975 rocks

Yess

- Not bad

Not a bad album, but not what I expected from their past songs I have heard. I was hoping for more of a "love it if we made it" vibe. Most of the album is MOST softer than I anticipated.

- Respect

All the singles were the most upbeat, but the rest really put everything into perspective and I respect them for sharing their lives thru music. All love

- Got experimental

Not sure what happened here...playing with some of the slower songs of their previous album...making them slower...and making an entire album of them for the most part. Good album if you are already suffering from S.A.D.

- Total Letdown!

Don't believe the over inflated Itunes reviews gushing over this album. I LOVED their last two albums but found this to be the HEIGHT of Matty's callousness. His narcissism is on full display on this album where he plays garbage synth loops and calls it a song. It feels like he just wanted to test the waters to see what people are willing to say is the band being 'artsy'. I have doubts the actual band was involved with this album. I love the band but this album release was a JOB on the people.

- Amazing

The instruments their voices everything was just beautifully composed. 10/10

- amazing

it's so rare to see a band with a sound this unique that continues to put out amazing tracks. this album is a tune for all age groups and it's amazing how far the 1975 has come. so proud :,)

- magic

everything these awesome guys touch turns gold

- You need to buy these album

Their most incredible album yet. You will not be disappointed.

A

- amazing album ✨

This album genuinely has changed my life and given me an entirely new outlook on music and the place of music in my own life. 'Love It If We Made It' is SUCH a power anthem and 'It's Not Living' just makes me want to dance so much!! 'Sincerity is Scary' is one my favorite happy songs and it turns my mood within seconds of hearing those initial beats. This is definitely my favorite album of 2018 💙

- Too much auto tune.

Disappointed. Sounds like 2007 with all the auto tune.

- Correction: Sign of the times

I was completely disappointed with this third album until I listened to it for a second time. These guys are so smart: what I thought was a spark, was really fire... They are capable of turning inside down their fan band status giving some of the most revealing lyrics that you can hear nowadays. I am not into "Mine", so jazzy, but adore "Love it when we made it": it has been conceived as a contemporary hymn, and it really makes the job. Looking forward MFC – 2019. Other favorites: “I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)”, “Sincerity is Scary” and “Give Yourself a Try”.

- Beautiful

Thank you 1975

- The best

My most favorite album in the entire world

- you make my butt hairs stand x

why ⁉️would you ever kiss 💋 me 😣 i'm not even half ❌👁 as pretty 😖 you gave her 👱🏻‍♀️ your sweater 👕 it's just polyester 🥱 but you like her better 😢 i wish i were heather ❌👱🏻‍♀️

- Amazing

Always want to die sometimes is breath taking.

- i like the 1975 and the 1975 likes me

Beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL ALBUM!!! All the songs are so unique in their own way, and Matt Healy continues to be an icon. An awesome pop/alternative album. A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships is the best album of 2018.

- Magical ♥️

This is they’re best album yet tbh. I love Matt Healy.

- Absolutely amazing

Name a better album.... I’ll wait

- THE 1975’S BEST ALBUM

This is their best album no question

- 😍

In love

- Great

This is album is really just extremely smart. It's a new step for 1975, but it's still phenomenal. Only problem is tootime

- love

an intertwined genre master piece 💛🌟

- Wig...

Snatched... I am in love with this album listening to it all day everyday thank you Matty for the beautiful deep lyrics I love your mind

- Love it!

My heart 😭❤️

- Love and Hate

Not really sure what’s going on. I find it hard to try to even get a repeat on a song. The only one I see myself constantly listening to is Tootime. Everything else is eh. Kind of disappointed but not to the full extent. Hopefully they go back to the synthesizer, 80s, dreamy, a little bit of upbeat kind of feel. I still believe in y’all. Let’s get it next time.

- Musical genius

Matty is a genius song writer, who talks post modernity, the flaws of society and, by proxy, the internet as well. More slow ballads then their last album, this is filled with nothing but deep songs with hidden (and not so hidden) meanings, but of course they can never forget some high energy pop-electronic songs that makes everyone want to dance. Bravo again guys, another masterpiece.

- Exactly what I needed

Can't explain it, but if the album title spoke to you, then this album is perfect.

- I love it!!

This album is definitely different than all of the other ones i have heard from the 1975 and i really like it!!! Although the songs are slower in this album i still love it so much ahdjjdheks!!!! I really like the meanings behind all the songs it’s really good!! I cant wait to see it live!!

- Slow and boring

I love The 1975 because of the fun upbeat, almost 80s/90s vibe but this album is terribly slow and drawn out, not really fun at all.

- Five Wonderful Songs, Far Too Much Filler

Tracks 2, 3, 5, 11, and 15 are exceptional songs, and complete highlights for this band. However, the rest of the album totally falls flat for me. Too many slow-to-midtempo, brooding, over-experimental tracks from a band that built its notoriety on upbeat, stadium tunes that beautifully contradicted themselves with deep, far-thinking, and ironic lyrics.

- A Soundtrack for Life?

Not my favorite album but... They definitely amplified their jazziness/r&b undertones and some songs definitely sound very orchestral or theatric. Even though things sound a lot slower and ‘different’, I feel like they’re still the same 1975. Not every song is good but the ones that are are REALLY good.

- Amazing.....One of the Year’s Best

Matthew Healy is so talented. Great songwriting and production. Music by millennials that Baby Boomers like. Comparable to Radiohead’s masterpiece, “O.K. Computer” sonically. However, The 1975’s videos are also addictively creative. That’s where Matthew’s talent truly shines evoking Michael Jackson to the Best of Brit Pop like early Take That. This album should be huge in the states. If MTV were as dominant as they once were, The 1975 would be global megastars. In due time.....

- Online Greatness.

The 1975’s new album is greatness in audio form and I think the concept is fantastic.

- absolutely brilliant

no words necessary. great tunes, fantastic lyricism

- absolutely brilliant.

This is definitely the 1975s best album. They showcase every side of their unique musical vibe, and the writing is just incredible. This is one of my fav albums of all time, and I very highly suggest it.

- Musicianship like Toto from the 80's

Tight band! Let's see if Rolling Stone treats them like Toto. Most likely Grammy's in thier future

- ❣️😍😍🥰

I can never hate an album by The 1975, the songs grow on you the more you listen.

- The best album in the entire world except for the rest of their albums

i love their music entirely, there is just something about their songs that make me so happy. this album is at the same level of their other albums, they are all AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL I LOVE THEM SO MUCh.

- Music For Millenials

Utter rubbish.

- My wife cheated on me

I’m setting here thinking why the hell is she playing these songs if she knows what she did and she does

- So heartfelt

You can really tell Matt pours his heart into this one, the whole album talks about self image, relationships, and modern dilemmas. This whole album was so beautiful, and I’m so glad I’ve been able to see this band through their transitions in all 3 albums.

- <3

I love the fact that they decided to make an album with a new sound. Very proud. Its my number one album I go to. It's not easy in the music industry to make music that doesnt all sound the same. This album also tells the truth about a lot of things whihc is what draws me in more to the band. <3

- Listen

I understand that this album lacked their usual “edgyness” but it isn’t about that. It tells the sometimes sad truth of this world in which we live. The truth isn’t always pretty, but it is exactly what we need. Thank you to The 1975 for opening my eyes. All that said, have a wonderful day and I hope you only the best from here on out. Bye!
