Eminem - Revival

About Revival by Eminem Album

Revival is the ninth studio album by American rapper Eminem. The album was released on December 15, 2017, through Aftermath Entertainment, Shady Records, and Interscope Records. Production for the album took place from 2016 to 2017 at various recording studios. In addition to Eminem himself, music production was handled by various record producers, including Rick Rubin, Fredwreck, Skylar Grey, Alex da Kid, and executive producer Dr. Dre. Revival features guest appearances from artists Beyoncé, Phresher, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, X Ambassadors, Skylar Grey, Kehlani, and Pink. Eminem first revealed that he was working on an album following the release of "Campaign Speech" in October 2016. A year later, he performed a viral freestyle at the 2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards, criticizing President Donald Trump. The album has many lines critiquing Trump's presidential campaign and election. The album's lead single, "Walk on Water" featuring Beyoncé, was released on November 10, 2017. "Untouchable" was released as a promotional single a week prior to the album's release. Revival was leaked online on December 13, 2017, two days before the album's release date. The album issued several more singles, including "River", featuring Ed Sheeran, "Nowhere Fast", featuring Kehlani, and "Remind Me". A music video for "Framed" was also released on April 3, 2018. Revival polarized critics, who were divided over its rock-influenced production on several songs and the heavy use of pop artists for guest appearances. The album debuted at number one in Australia, Canada, Finland, the UK, and the US. In addition, it was the UK Christmas number one album of 2017 and has been certified platinum in the UK. It was followed by Kamikaze, Eminem's tenth studio album, which was considered to be a reaction to the criticism of Revival. Eminem first revealed that he was working on an album when he announced the song "Campaign Speech" on his Twitter in October 2016, writing, "Don't worry I'm working on an album! Here's something meanwhile." Rumors about the release date started in late 2016, saying the album would be called Success and would be released sometime in January 2017. A fake tracklist also was leaked at the same time, with Adele, Chance the Rapper, Kid Cudi, Vince Staples, The Weeknd and Mástein Bennett as featured artists. Rumors were sparked again in February and March 2017, when Eminem announced he was headlining three shows in Reading, Glasgow and Leeds. Various news articles said that because he was performing, he would have to release new material to perform, or at least preview, at the festivals. Revival has many lines critiquing Trump's presidential campaign and election, calling him a racist, a Nazi, and Adolf Hitler—among other incendiary insults and a fantasy in which the rapper is "framed" for murdering Ivanka Trump. He also raps his regret at having collaborated with Trump on a mock national convention in which Trump endorsed him. On "The Ringer" from his 2018 album Kamikaze, Eminem apologizes for alienating fans who supported Trump, and says that he was questioned by the U.S. Secret Service for his seemingly threatening lyrics. On October 25, 2017, Paul Rosenberg posted a photo to Instagram of Yelawolf's Trial by Fire. In the background of the photo, there is a billboard ad promoting a drug called "Revival". Suspicion was aroused when fans noticed that the 'E' in "Revival" was reversed, similar to Eminem's previous logos. Visiting the website listed on the billboard ad revealed several clues. On the website, a promotional video about Revival makes references to Eminem's song "Lose Yourself". The website also references "Sing for the Moment", "Brain Damage", "Fack", "Role Model", and "Any Man". According to the website, Revival treats Atrox Rithimus, a nonexistent medical condition. One translation of Atrox Rithimus, from Latin, is 'terrible rhyme'. The website is also registered to one of Eminem's labels, Interscope Records. When the phone number for "Revival" is called, it plays the background music of Dr. Dre's "I Need a Doctor", which Eminem features on. These details led fans to believe Eminem's new album would be called Revival. This would follow suit with the names of two of his last three solo albums, Relapse and Recovery. The lead single, "Walk on Water", was first performed by Eminem at the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards on November 12 with co-producer and writer Skylar Grey on vocals. Both performed the song and a medley of "Stan" / "Love the Way You Lie" on Saturday Night Live on November 18. The album release date was teased multiple times. On November 28, 2017, the release date of the album was announced to be December 15 via both Dr. Dre's and Eminem's social media accounts, while also revealing the fake drug campaign of the record. On December 5, 2017, Eminem shared a complete list of all the tracks featuring on his album via his Instagram account. The list features a total of 19 tracks, including an interlude track to Revival, featuring artists such as Phresher, Ed Sheeran, Skylar Grey, Alicia Keys, X Ambassadors, Pink and Kehlani. On December 7, 2017, the album cover was revealed and projected onto a Detroit building. That night, the song "Untouchable" was released and a pre-order was set up on iTunes. On November 8, 2017, Eminem tweeted a picture of a doctor's prescription note with the words "Walk on Water" and "Take as needed" written on it. Additionally, the doctor's note was labeled with the logo for Revival. This caused speculation that the first single would be titled "Walk on Water". On November 9, Paul Rosenberg shared a video on Instagram linking the drug Revival with "Walk on Water" and confirming the song, which was subsequently released the next day. An audio video was uploaded to Eminem's YouTube channel. As of December 16, 2017, the video has nearly 50 million views and over 1.1 million likes. On December 23, 2017, the music video for the song was released exclusively on Apple Music and Eminem's official VEVO channel. "Walk on Water" debuted at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the 57th entry for both artists on the chart. "River" featuring Ed Sheeran was released as a second single of the album. The song was released to radio on January 5, 2018 and was released a single on February 7. An audio video was uploaded to Eminem's YouTube channel on December 14, 2017. As of January 15, 2018, the video has over 60 million views and 1 million likes. On February 14, 2018, the music video for the song was released on Eminem's official VEVO channel. Commercially, it has reached number one in the United Kingdom, Norway and Sweden as well as the top 10 in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland, and the top 20 in Belgium and the United States. The album's third single, "Nowhere Fast" featuring Kehlani, impacted US Contemporary hit radio on March 27, 2018. The two artists performed the song at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards. "Remind Me" was released to Italian radio as the fourth single from the album on July 6, 2018. "Framed", a horrorcore song, received a music video on April 3, 2018, inspired by 1980s horror films. "Untouchable" was released as a promotional single on December 8, 2017. The song features a sample from the song "Earache My Eye" by the comedy duo Cheech & Chong. A remix of "Chloraseptic" featuring 2 Chainz and Phresher was released as a promotional single on January 8, 2018. Upon release, Revival overall received polarized reviews from music critics as many were divided over its perceived lack of focus, lyrics, heavy sampling of rock music in the production, and the abundance of pop artists for guest appearances. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 50, based on 24 reviews, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. Don Needham of The Guardian criticized the album's production and focus, stating that "If Eminem thinks his verbal box of tricks can overcome the weakness of any backing track, his recent albums have demonstrated otherwise." In a positive review, Andy Gill of The Independent complimented the album's lyrical themes: "But ultimately, it's all about Eminem himself, and nowhere more dynamically than in the berserk self-assessment "Offended", where he asserts, amongst other things, that if the time he spent writing were taken into account, he'd be a minimum-wage slave – a faintly ludicrous claim, but immediately backed up by a bravura extended burst of rapid-rap babble that both explains and exemplifies his skills, and leaves one wondering not just how long it took to write, but how on earth he manages to pronounce such a polysyllabic torrent so perfectly." Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph stated that Revival "represents Eminem on top form, which is to say unstoppable, unbeatable yet often indefensible." The Irish Times concluded that Revival is "mildly more admirable than previous outings but no more enjoyable. A chance to bust out of the slump has passed Eminem by. It just might never happen for him." In a mixed review, Jon Caramanica of The New York Times remarked that while the album is "probably the best of his recent albums", he criticized Eminem's apparent lack of awareness to the evolution of hip hop's sound in general, arguing that he is too "beholden to his own aesthetic." In a negative review, Consequence of Sound gave the album an "F" rating, calling the album "ugly, arthritic, and pleasureless" and "a disaster". Comparing Revival to Eminem's previous bodies of work, Matthew Ismael Ruiz of Pitchfork stated that "Musically, Revival is no different, chock full of piano ballads and pop-star features that echo the most cynically commercial corners of his catalog. The shock value comes not from the album's overwhelmingly bland hooks or cringe-worthy humor (of which there is plenty), but from the moments where his growth as a human is most apparent", concluding that "Revival is another late-career album that does little for his legacy." Writing for Vice, Robert Christgau found the album "much cleverer than lemmings claim, bluntly and intelligently political too, but so received in its cartoon misogyny and pop grandeur you know he felt irrelevance bearing down even before #MeToo killed this album on the vine". He singled out "Untouchable", "Chloraseptic", and "Like Home" as highlights. Trent Clark from HipHopDX said than "Eminem's dedication to wrecking mics like Robert Mueller can never be questioned but the production choices still remain an enigma. When he's not bathing in lamely visible rock samples like Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" or The Cranberries' "Zombie" (on "Remind Me" or "In Your Head" respectively), he's mostly square pegging his intensified lyrics on mechanical slabs of assembly line pop hybrids." He singled out "Framed" and "Castle" as highlights: "it's largely the retreads of past glory where he hits his stride the hardest. On the hypnotically-produced "Framed," Marshall dons the hockey mask for old times sake and pulls up off homicidal fantasies that for better or worse, feature the album's most in-pocket rhyme moment. And when he plunges into his drug-altered psyche to speak on his greatest love — his daughter Haile Jade — the ever-reliable DJ Khalil steps up to the plate on "Castle" with a darkened soundbed of macabre guitars and deathly drum marches that feature the album's most vintage Eminem moment." Mitch Findlay from HotNewHipHop wrote a similar critics and said: "Revival is, by far, Eminem's most pop-friendly album to date. While previous albums merely flirted with the sound, Revival has bought a ring and proposed to it. Therefore, if you're somebody who finds no pleasure in the production of "pop-rap," you'll find no solace here." He singled out "Framed," "Castle" and "Arose" as highlights, calling the latter two are "among Revival's strongest tracks. Conceptually and lyrically, the closing pair find Eminem in excellent form, and longtime fans will no doubt cite these two as album highlights." About the album reaction, Eminem said: "I think there's things to be taken away from this album and the reaction to it. Were there too many songs? Were there too many features? There were certain songs like "Tragic Endings" and "Need Me" where I felt like lyrically they would give the listener a second to breathe. I spend a lot of time writing shit that I think nobody ever gets." Later he said: "When the Revival tracklist came down the pipe, it was like overwhelmingly, 'This shit is going to be trash.' Nobody really wanted to be wrong about it. I'm not saying everybody, but a lot of people had already formed their opinion." He also stated that he is proud of the album, saying: "I'm good with Revival. Fuck it. Because I couldn't have made this album without it." Revival is Eminem's eighth consecutive album to top the US Billboard 200, where it opened with 197,000 copies among 267,000 album-equivalent units. As a result, Eminem became the first musical act to have eight entries in a row debut at its summit. The next week, Revival was replaced at the top spot by Taylor Swift's reputation. Revival entered atop the UK Albums Chart with 132,000 album-equivalent units, becoming the year's second largest opening behind Ed Sheeran's ÷ and giving the rapper his eighth consecutive number-one album. As of October 2018, it sold 321,000 album-equivalent units in the UK. It additionally arrived at number one in Australia, becoming his ninth entry to top the ARIA Albums Chart. The record then fell behind ÷ the following week. In 2018, Revival was ranked as the 32nd most popular album of the year on the Billboard 200.

- Great album

I don’t know why this album got so torn down for its as awesome as any other album🎶

- Awful!

He became the very thing he used to make fun of

- This album isn’t bad

Honestly I listened to this album and it isn’t that bad tbh 4\5!

- In your head

I agree its has bad songs but this album has too many great songs i love it

- overhated

idk why people hated this so much it’s pretty good. i love u em ❤️

- Ehhh

Kindve a gray area for em

- I love it

This is not an album for everyone

- 👍🏽

Great album.

- Will.E.T#3

This is just awful. Bad Production, Bad writing, hands down Eminem’s worst album. This album even ends with a sound of a toilet flushing, that’s how you know it’s crap 😂😂

- Appreciate The Creativity

Let’s be honest, this album is not great. At all. But it isn’t terrible, imo. If you want to listen to terrible then listen to Lil Wayne’s Rebirth, that’s terrible. But this album has a few masterpieces on it, which is why it isn’t terrible. If he had better production on here than this would honestly be an amazing album

- I don’t get the hate

Love this like a lot

- Underrated album

People hate walk on water but don’t realize Eminem was explaining how they expect so much from him and how he can only do so much this album will eventually be appreciated once he retires. Or he passes away.

- Political

Don’t like Eminem's political stance in this chapter of his career.

- Fire

Underrated Album

- Pretty good!

It takes a good poet to get as good as this! This dude is awesome and I’ve been a fan of his since the Marshall Mathers LP came out! Keep goin, Em!!

- Revival

This could definitely not be the best album Eminem has ever made, but it is still pretty good. People over exaggerated how bad it was, and that’s why most people hate it. It’s the new Eminem, get over it.

- Meaningful

One of my favorite albums, castle and arose really get me.

- People Hate On This Album I Don’t Get It Honestly

It’s A Classic In My Eyes....

- The album talked about the future 😱😱😱

Re-listen

- Have some understanding

This was far from his worst, but i can say this album has something that most albums dont, and thats originality, alot of the album is songs that if you really understand it, it gets so deep, my favorite is tragic endings, and these songs have great stories tied to them, really take time to appreciate what eminem had to deliver here, it wasnt slim shady, it was marshall mathers, and marshall did great

- Goat 🐐

🔥🔥

- Brilliant!!!!

I will never understand why this album flopped. This album is absolutely brilliant!!! I laughed and I cried!! Just brilliant!! I love every single song on this album!! I will meet this man someday and I’ll hug him too!! I will tell him how brilliant this album is!!!

- Em is still good

Revival is a great album that should get more respect.

- It’s good

Tragic Endings is my favorite. I relate to it 100%

- Very disappointing.

Okay, so it’s no surprise that Revival is the worst thing Eminem has done. Now, I quite like Eminem. I think he’s a mostly solid rapper but with poppy choruses, weird bars and awfully layered hooks this album falls really short.

- Eminem’s worst but that doesn’t means it’s bad

Sure it’s not anywhere near Eminem show or mmlp but the album had underrated songs like castle, arose, tragic endings, bad husband, and offended. At first I hated it but after a couple of listens it gave me one of my favorite songs in river

- Overhated

A GREAT album

- Lyrics only

Meaningful

- Great Album

I like this newer music where he is being vulnerable with people that's real music its not supposed to be people constantly hiding behind their ego.

- Love it

This album means so much to me. Brings me back to a specific time in my life.

- Actually listen

You have to actually listen to the lyrics. Probably one of his most vulnerable albums. Not every song is going to be a “bop”. Love this album, such a shame no one gave him a chance. People change, music evolves.

- My favorite album

Haters will always hate because Eminem has not fell off and he doesn’t plan to 🔥🔥🔥

- Guess Who’s Back? Back Again!

Eminem is nothing short of a pure genius with his approach to the society with his music. I was hooked from the moment I first was introduced to him while working at TransWorld Entertainment as the rap, R&B, Christian and Blues music planner and associate buyer for this music. I even had the opportunity to see him live in Jones Beach on Long Island NY while working there for his album The Eminem Show. He is a truly talented artist from start to finish. Bravo on continuing your legacy for the music industry. He is the Elvis is Rap!

- Eh!

Not his best work, has some good tracks! But definitely not great

- Em’s most unique

Doesn’t sound like his other albums, and that’s good!

- So underrated!!!

I don’t see why people don’t like this album! So many of the songs sound freaking beautiful and a lot of the songs have got some insane bars! Critics man smh🤦‍♂️ Em, if nobody else likes this, I like it.

- Slim

Shady 😎😎😎😎😎❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

- Long time fans and listeners can’t help but question

We know Eminem, makes him self sound like a democrat. How did, if at all, these songs regarding a president that his long time friend kid rock supports, effect their relationship?? One republican, one democrat…

- Not Trash just a good album 6/10

Favorite tracks on the album are 1- Walk On Water (masterpiece especially with the music video) 2- Castle & Arose (Both are Masterpieces if you love “When I’m Gone” & “Mockingbird” these songs have give off the same vibes and both songs connect.) 3- In Your Head 4- River 5- Tragic Ending 6- Believe

- This album is good

Eminem’s songs with Rick Rubin are so awesome!

- Underrated

Sure it ain’t his best but cmon ITS EMINEM. everything’s worth checking out💜🖤💙

- Always

Always

- Perfect

Amazing he is Rap God

- Very underated

Everyone has an opinion but their opinion is wrong about this album

- Pretty Good

Many people said this album was terrible the second it was released, but it's really good. I've been a fan of him for a long time and I think this is still not his best work but still pretty good 👍

- His biggest flops are your greatest hits

Not his best project but it definitely had some gems in it 💎- In Your Head, Castle/Arose, Framed were all amazing tracks. Walk on Water, Remind Me and River were pretty good too. His “worst album” is better than most rappers best albums

- 🚮

Eminem you could have done better

- I still believe in you

There’s a reason why people call him the greatest of all time.

- Amazing

🔥🔥

- Revival lives

One of the best albums in his arsenal

- Pretty Deep, New

New style flow and I loved it🔥🔥🔥🔥

- Worst Eminem album

This album is Eminem’s downfall. Since then, his music has never been as good as before in the times of Relapse, Recovery and MMLP2. But since it’s an Eminem album it’s still better than 99% of rap.

- idk what’s the hate for

You have to despise Em if you hate this album. It’s actually pretty good.

- Good

Good

- Great 👍

This is MGK’s greatest hits.

- Good

Don’t know what people are saying it’s fire

- 🤦‍♂️

Man, this was bad. It’s so bad that it pains me to listen to it again. There is not one song off this album that I’d consider in Eminem’s too 50. To start, I hate his new angry choppy flow that is consistent throughout the album. Many of his lines are incredibly corny and try to come across funny but are cringeworthy instead. Starting off I didn’t mind walking on water but it just kept going downhill from there. River I guess was okay, but the topic he’s covering is touchy and comes across awkwardly, at least the chorus is catchy. He comes across quite politically and very few people like political Em, including me. It just didn’t feel like an Eminem album, and I was getting Encore flashbacks, but they felt more like nightmares than flashbacks. Wasn’t feeling it at all. Honestly, I don’t really recommend any song, maybe River and Castle, Framed too I guess. But that’s it, his worst work by far. 2.5/10 - JV

- Awesome

Wicked

- 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

Gay

- It is good

So many people hate on this album and on first listen I wasn’t a fan and avoided it but spin re listening it is great and so underrated it is only hated because we expect more from Em but if Drake did this he would be seen as goat

- Fireeee

I don’t get why everyone hating on this album it’s amazing

- Awesome

So under rated

- No

I'm good

- It stunk

Looks like this is the end of the line for Eminem’s career. Kind of a sign that the time has come for him to lighten up and move on with his life

- By K The Stan

Eminem this is great. You have always been a legend, man. Just don’t give up, never listen to the haters. Your work is unlike many others and definitely much better than any other rapper in today’s generation. I love your music and i just want you to know that you’re phenomenal, you’re a rap god, the godzilla, the silver back, the caterpillar, you are eminem. You are Marshall Mathers. You are Slim shady. Thank you for helping me through all my troubles. EVERYONE RESPECT THIS MAN!! His efforts and the sweat and blood he puts in that pen. Thanks Em.

- Always masterful

Still quality and relatable

- Love you slim shady

You are God

- Adore this album❤️

How anyone can hate this album is beyond me. Everyone that criticises this album knows nothing about music

- Massively underrated

Far better than it’s given credit for. I admit initially I wasn’t very keen on it but after a couple more listens I began to realise that it’s amazing and up there with some of his greatest work

- Underrated and Overhated

Such a good album, ruined by the media and people who didn’t take the time to listen

- How is this album thought of as bad??!!

Some of his best work

- ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE SONG!🥰🥰🥰

The song is absolutely amazing I 100 percent recommend this for people 13+ over tho because of the language but over all it’s amazing 😉

- Most underrated album

This album is fire 🔥

- Underrated

This album is a true expression of his life and feelings and people just don’t appreciate his work. P.s the word play is insane throughout the album

- Eminem’s worst album

Lazy and dragged out. Barely any decent content. His worst piece of work yet
