I was at the Spectrum in Philadelphia the night that this show was recorded. It was fantastic then and is remains a high point in Ron James Dio's career to this day! The stage set and theatrics which involved a fire-breathing dragon were high-tech way back in the day, but would be considered low-tech or, at best, sophomoric by today's standards. At any rate, the music is timelesss and is classic DIO! For a live performance from a heavy metal outfit, this live show is hard to beat! Long live Rock and Roll and RJD! Rest in peace, brother.
I liked this lin-up just as well as the Vivian Campbell line-up. I thought Craig Goldy was an equally gifted guitarist. Now on to the recording itself. The was recorded in 1986 and sounds better than the majority of modern metal live recordings, that you'd care to mention. And this is a not heavily futzed with, after the fact, in the studio. Its a really accurate document of Dio in 1986. I was a teen duriing this era...and went to my share of concerts. I think concerts sounded better then than they do today, to be honest. The set-list is awesome, the extended indiviual solos's are even entertaining, if somewhat obligatory. Dio is just an unstoppable force, and injects all the necessary drama, and theatrics. Vinny hits those drums like no other... He is one of my favorite drummers. Absolutely solid musicianship all around. This is not a pedestrian run throught the set... its very inspired. I pair this up with the Intermission EP (Live with Vivian Cambell, and one studio track introducing Goldy - Time To Burn - the only source for the studio version, for a long time). This album and that EP are my favorite Dio records. Both are required listening.
the guitarist in this lineup was craig goldy not vivian campbell
