Aerosmith - Done with Mirrors

About Done with Mirrors by Aerosmith Album

Done with Mirrors is the eighth studio album by American rock band Aerosmith, released November 9, 1985. The release marked the return to the band of Joe Perry, who had left the group in 1979, and Brad Whitford, who had left the band in 1981. It was also the band's first album released by Geffen Records. It was intended as their "comeback" album, but it didn't live up to commercial expectations. In keeping with the title, all the text on the album (except for the catalog number and UPC) was written back-to-front and could be read normally by holding it up to a mirror. All but the original CD and cassette pressing flip the artwork, so it can be read without a mirror, and replaced the photo of an illusionist bending forks with one of the band, the band's logo also being prominent on the new cover. As a result, the original CD (which came housed in a longbox) is considered desirable by fans. All text inside the booklet of the first CD-pressing is also back-to-front. The title is a double entendre, referring both to illusions that are "done with mirrors," as well as members of the band quitting their drug use (such as cocaine, which is traditionally snorted off of a mirror). "Let The Music Do the Talking" was a new recording of the title track of the first album by The Joe Perry Project, with altered lyric and melody. Joey Kramer, who was a guest on VH1 Classic's That Metal Show, expressed his dislikes of the album, claiming that the band "never really finished it."

- Awesome

One of Aerosmith’s best albums of the 80’s.

- The REAL Comeback Album

For those of you who thought Permanent Vacation was Aerosmith’s first album with the original line-up, get ready for a shock. Done With Mirrors was the first album with all five original members and sounded completely different than the Aerosmith many may know today. It’s different in that it picked up right where classics like Toys In The Attic left off but with an updated sound. It rocks from starts to finish. The only reason for 4 stars over 5 was “The Reason A Dog”, while not a bad song, just didn’t seem to fit in with rest of the album. However, the other songs rock from start to finish. The newly sober band sounded raw and full of high energy on every track. Joe Perry’s playing was possibly his best and most aggressive & the rest of the band roared through every track. Steven Tyler’s vocals were on fire with none of the pop stylings he attempts now. It was a fiery comeback for a legendary band and why this album didn’t do better is a mystery. Why they changed direction after this record is an even bigger mystery. I remember hearing “Dude Looks Like A Lady” and later “Angel” thinking “WHAT HAPPENED?!” And it was never the same after that. So take a listen to the last good Aerosmith record and think what could have been?

- Their last best strip down set

I agree with brookisee review for the most part but this album didn’t go unnoticed it was constantly mentioned by mtv DJ”s at the time but the 80’s crowd just wouldn’t accept it and I think the band and its manager knew that they had to bring some pop elements i to their rock if they ever was gonna go further.in comes Run DMC and the rest is history after walk this way remix it changed everything for the band it brought a fresh air and the band for their next album hired famous songwriters to help with the band relate to those new fans out there.

- Last good album

I agree with Brooksie, this is the last good Aerosmith album, everything after this one became more pop oriented and commercial. This album doesn't compare with their first five albums but it tries hard and does rock. You can at least hear the spirit of a once great rock band with this. I am a guy in his 50's and was 14 years old when I heard the album "Rocks", that one rearranged my DNA... turned my underwear inside out...
