- Awesome album!!!!!

Best DT album of the Mangini era. Kickass songs, not a bad tune on the album. Love it!!

- “Wow” and that’s a quote

At Wit’s End is the Seventh Degree on Inner Turbulence. There are so many classic Dream Theater elements in this album, you’d swear these are lost tracks from previous albums. Every Dream Theater album has a few tracks that rise above the rest, Illumination Theory, Octavarium, Learning to Live, and so on. This album has so many exceptional songs it’s hard so determine which one will be that track.

- Outstanding

That a band could be together this long and continue to write so well is amazing. This album rocks from front to back, and you will want to listen to each song every time you play the album. Every musician is well heard. Every musician is top notch. DT continues to rock and somehow get better.

- Yes, it's REALLY good!

This is a fantastic album. I think any reviews before 3-4 days after release are premature adn DT requires several to many listens to fully grasp and review. Gritty and dirty in places and feels like Train of Thought in places. Some instant classics like Paralyzed but i have not heard anything about Viper King, the bonus track. It is a bit different but has a very cool groove and it one the best songs on the album. Very cool stuff and like someone else said, I wish it was longer!

- So far pretty good. iTunes stinks.

First few listens and it’s pretty good. Not their best, not their worst. But....You can actually hear the bass guitar again!!! Why no lyric book, iTunes?

- Decent Album

I'm a long time DT fan who has every album. Favorites are Images and SFAM. A lot of people swear by this particular album, but I don't hear it..... It's not bad, but most songs are not memorable and even sound uninspired. A couple standouts like Fall into the Light and S2n, but otherwise forgettable. The musicianship is top notch as always, just the melodies and lyrics are not that interesting to me. At least it's better than The Astonishing.

- A return to greatness!

There have been very few DT albums I haven’t cared for and the astonishing was one of them. A for effort but execution lacked for me. This album felt like a triumphant return! This album maybe should have been called Dream Theater because it contains songs that encompass their career more then any other. Songs like S2N, Barstool Warrior and At Winds End feel like I&W/Awake era, Untethered Angel felt like something from BCSL, Paralyzed and Room 137 felt like a mix of Octavarium/TOT. Fall into the light really felt like a Metallica song in DT clothing. Pale Blue Dot is the unique song and my favorite. It’s different but heavy and very DT. Paralyzed and 137 were my least favorite tracks. Felt very mainstream and just not DT. Overall, I loved this album and they finally got the drum mix right!

- Dream over Theater

This album has a way of tugging at your emotions, through touching lyrics and sweeping instrumental performances by all, both working in well polished synchronicity. When do they record the follow up at Yonderbarn?

- An amazing album!

How do they manage to compose heavy music that at the same time is epic, melodic and beautiful? These guys are geniuses.

- Great album

Great album!

- D/T

An outstanding offering from everyone involved in Distance Over Time. This is a definite step in the Dream Theater direction. For those new to this band there may be better starting points but this is a great addition for any fan.

- Overproduced? Or too heavy?

I have been with these guys since 92. That's almost 30 years of loving this band. However, is it weird to say that this sounds forced and wayyy to heavy? The songs are great but dont feel like the old days. Its too digital I guess. I just want it to be natural and not feel like Im listening to a DT machine.

- Rediscovery

Way to go boys! Missed those quintessential nasty rifts. There’s even an Easter Egg in the form of Owen Wilson’s voice saying, “Wow...” on track S2N.

- Dream theater ROCKS!

I listened to the hole thing, amazing! How do they do it?!?! P.S, I’ve been to concerts for them!

- Sounds like my favorite album

Awesome music! I’ve been waiting for them to get back to their roots! Sounds so muck like the Black Album (my favorite!) John is sounding more like Dave Mustaine who is awesome, John I really can’t hear the bass well, the piano doesn’t sound like ice cream truck music anymore like the last few and unfortunately James voice continues to struggle but it all blends well- 5 big stars!

- Their Best in a while

Ever since Train of Thought, I've honestly been disappointed everytime DT has released an album. It's not that the last 5 or so albums have been bad, they just lacked a certain something. This album has that certain something. The songs are heavy, memorable, catchy, and are beautiful examples of technical prowess and songwriting married in harmony. Thank you DT!!

- Pretty sick

This album is great I love DT been a fan for a long time love all the albums great metal band over all you rock DT

- Welcome Home DT!

If “The Astonishing” was the storm cloud rolling in, this album is like the breath of fresh air from after the pouring rain. Lots of great stuff, and actually, really can’t say many things I don’t like about this album. To get the negatives out of the way: Labrie is getting older. He has lots of great moments but overall I’d say some of those higher notes he’s struggling to hit on this album. And also, wish it was longer! But everything else...wow! What an album. I really like how it flows and the track listing is excellent. Many of the songs in which I thought might not be all that good by looking at the title have actually ended up as some of my favorites, such as Barstool Warrior or At Wit’s End. I also feel like Mangini really shines on this record a lot, his drumming is more phenomenal than ever on a DT record. This album is very driven by guitar and drums, which I love! You will find instant classic sections of songs that get stuck in your head like a riff from a verse or a chorus section. This isn’t a “catchy” album per se, but I don’t think since Octavarium or A Dramatic Turn of Events have I picked up a DT record and just listened to the whole thing the first time through and thought wow I want to do that again right after! 9.5/10 for me. Love it.

- Good enough for a newcomer band not for DT

After the initial few tracks on youtube my expectations were low, so when the album came out i practically forced myself to listen to it the end, hard to believe it's the same band that not so long ago released " Astonishing" One of the greatest masterpieces in prog metal and one of the best albums of DT career, Labrie's voice is so auto-tuned and overprosessed its painful.

- The awesome sound of DT power!

What a wonderul endeavor from some of the most talented musicians on the planet! Nothing short of a sound-spectacle merging old school DT harmonious prog, with their metal prog signature by which legions of DT fans and fellow musician admirers benchmark. Looking forward to seeing them again soon in Mexico City. Viva Dream Theater amigos!!

- A dream session

Dream theater, what can I say ?? Totally awesome. Listen and enjoy this 5⭐️ album.

- Dr music

Everyone here is a qualified and knowledgeable reviewer of musical talent, composition, technique, engineering. Uh, I highly doubt it and if given a rigorous quiz to demonstrate their competency, what percentage would come close to passing? Speak only of what you are qualified to speak of.

- Phenomenal!!!!

Refreshing to hear DT sounding like DT. Mikes drumming in thrilling to listen to and the vibe I get is old school passion for making music.

- Killer album

Congrats DT! You have done it again. I know this album is an hour long, but it feels so short because it’s awesome

- PROG GODS

These guys really outdid themselves with this one! DT is BACK

- Distance Over Time (2019)

A track by track analysis: 1. Untethered Angel 3.5/5 stars A bit too weird of a song, but after the very Broadway-ish Astonishing, old school fans should be happy that Dream Theater is back to basics. 2. Paralyzed 5/5 I’ve tried to hate this song, as it sounds too similar to Red (a good band, by the way) but the melody just wouldn’t leave my head, so I give up. It’s a good song. 3. Fall into the Light 6/5 The very progressive song was good already until John Petrucci’s solo catapulted this song into my personal work from Dream Theater. The instrumental break is too beautiful to describe. 4. Barstool Warrior 3/5 Just an okay song. Definitely not my favorite here. 5. Room 137 5/5 Mangini’s first lyrical contribution after 8 years in Dream Theater is a psychotic blend of Queen and Yes with crazy progressive metal thrown in for good measure. 6. S2N 6/5 This is what the 2013 self titled album should’ve have sounded like. It’s melodic and highly technical in a very sophisticated manner and very smoothly streamlined. 3rd best song on the record. 7. At Wit’s End 5/5 At Wit’s End sounds very much like something from Systematic Chaos, as if to apologize to fans for The Astonishing. The only thing I don’t like is the hidden track at the end; it sounds too much like Muzak and is totally unnecessary. Doesn’t hurt the song, luckily. 8. Out of Reach 6/5 My 2nd favorite song of the album and the best ballad Dream Theater has had in years. John Petrucci’s clean guitar work stands out, as does James LaBrie’s airy vocals at the end of the song. 9. Pale Blue Dot 4/5 As the most complicated song on the album, Pale Blue Dot is sure to please fans who yearned for a song like this last time around. My only tiff with this is that it’s too similar to Room 137 just by a margin, but it’s otherwise incomparable. Consensus: Almost among the best albums the band has made, Distance Over Time rewards listeners with repeated sittings with the return to Dream Theater’s signature progressive metal. Not as amazing as Train of Thought, but nevertheless a strong effort all the same.

- Great DT album

Heavy and melodic. Just a great album. The guys sound like they could rip through anything in their catalogue like the day they wrote it.

- The Unfortunate Truth

“The Simpsons” is an undeniable part of television history. The show was groundbreaking in many ways. Every season warranted the excited anticipation leading up to it. Other shows came and went, and some even stuck around, but “The Simpsons” never felt the need to go for cheap laughs, nor did they compromise their vision of what they wanted the show to be. They were absolutely at the top of their game - impeccably positioned to go out while still on top, thereby cementing their legendary status. Unfortunately they fell asleep at the wheel and now, more than ten exits beyond where they should have exited, here they are. At this point, they’ve shamed, and done such incredible damage to, their brand that there’s no point in stopping now. The show may as well continue until its twitching, hideous, and bloated corpse simultaneously ekes out its final gurgling, sputtering breath, while wholly losing control of its bowels in spectacular fashion. - I LOVE IT

I had been listening Dream Theatre since I lived in Perú not speaking English at all, and I think this band is just spectacular, and underestimate with no reason for many headbangers. LONG LIFE TO DREAM THEATRE!

- Wow!!!

Best Dream Theater album in long time!!!

- A solid, awesome Dream Theater album!

This is hands down one of their best albums yet! A melodic mix of hard, heavy songs with some songs that take you back to the earlier Dream Theater days...and even Rush! It has a little bit of the sound from some of Dream Theater's best albums, with some original awesomeness thrown in there! My personal favorites are Paralyzed, Barstool Warrior, S2n, and At Wit's End. Keep it up, guys! You're the best! Oh, and please add Arizona to your tour destinations like you usually do! You have a huge fan base here!!!

- Great as always

Everything about this album is good.

- Album of the year!

Sounds like classic Dream Theater! Granted, some songs sound like they take their inspiration from other bands, but that’s to be expected as DT wear their influences on their sleeve proudly. Rock on!

- Meh

Sounds kind of like Fates Warning. except for girls. And not as heavy.

- Least favorite DT album

The playing is great. But 2 years later and I still cannot get into this album. It just seems lifeless to me. It is DT so there are some sparks of greatness here but no fire, at least for me. Luckily AVFTTOTW just dropped and its awesome.

- Classic DT

This is definitely a return to their roots. More in the vein of Images & Words/Awake era. Probably their best record in quite awhile!

- All good things...

...must come to an end. Now that the album has actually come out (notice how many reviews are from before that based on a single), it pains me to say that Dream Theater seems done. The songs are all samey, and sound like they were written by a computer algorithm that listened to all of their past work and produced what it calculated to be their sound. While technically correct, the work is devoid of a soul. Listen to Awake and tell me this compares, seriously. I wanted to believe DT wasn't getting stale as Portnoy said years back, but he was right. Everything has its season, and DT's is passed. With all respect, I think they should move on.

- A goodbye.

I have listened to this band for 11 years, not as long as they've been producing. I own every single thing they've ever made including their side project(s). Yet, after having all of that musical information for me to pull from, it sounds like as of the album before this that they're out of ideas. Spent. I've really been craving something novel, creative, & original. This is all very derivative of their earlier work. Sure, Portnoy, yadda yadda yadda, and they made some new lyrics, blah. But the problem, it's that the style and techniques used that are dialed back, are just done. So Dream Theater, I'm done. I really wish this never came to pass, I'm just let down Dream Theater. And where's the solo album John?

- Great again.

Dream Theater pushed the envelope on The Astonishing which had mixed reviews. Personally, I thought it was outstanding. In Distance over time, they have switched gears back to the early years and showed the fans how diverse this talented band is and always has been.

- Best album in 20 years...

...hands down.

- Solid Dream Theater

They’ve put out a ton of good stuff and a few weak albums, but they remain my “go to” band. They are so good at what they do, and are so multifaceted, they can literally be the soundtrack for your life. I know they’re a big part of my own. Keep it up guys. Be yourselves and explore where your talent takes you.

- It's finally all coming together again!

As a drummer/keyboardist and fan of Dream Theater since the Octavarium days, I can say that this is one of the best albums this band has put out thus far. I really enjoy how well the production of this album is. Barstool Warrior has me begging for more chorus and I find myself continuing to sing it almost nonstop. Pretty emotional stuff for me. Mangini's technique and sound is really great. Rudess' playing is still top notch and it seems like he is commemorating some of Moore and Sherinian's sound on this album. LaBrie's vox are really great and I think he has surpassed my expectations. You can finally hear Myung's bass again!!!!! LOL All of that allows seasoned fans and new fans to approach this album head on. If remotely interested in any progressive rock/metal or expanding your musical pallete, Distance Over Time is a must buy!!! Can't wait to see DT at TPAC on April 17th! \mm/

- Yup

There's the Dream Theater I've grown to love. Nice work. Really enjoy the entire offering.

- Absolutely Phenomenal

I would easily place this in my top 5 Dream Theater albums of all time, this is among the best overall – and definitely the best and most consistent effort overall since Octavarium or even Train of Thought. The mixing is a step up from the past several albums and the songs don’t have a single weak, pointless, corny, or generic moment in any of them. I’d liken the overall sound to Images and Words and Awake meets Train of Thought, though there are hints of sounds from previous albums and new ones as well to help this stand out among the rest. It also just feels like it has a soul… it has that one thing you can’t put your finger on that resonates with you and draws you back to it, even beyond the unmatched musicianship and catchy riffs, which is something I don’t think any of the MM albums have had, and the last couple of MP albums didn’t have consistently. I think that listening to fans suggestions and also having all of the members contributing to this album made a huge difference. I haven't put this album down since I got it... I'd highly recommend that others pick it up as well.

- So...I've got EVERY album *from the Greatest Hit(s) album on...

So why would I STOP NOW? Click yes if you agree!!!

- High Quality!!! Repetition...???

Yes, this is something you can dance to if you're so inclined. However, the question is, does the vinyl version have any grooves in it, because these boys have clearly fallen into one or maybe two. Never the less, I do love that beefy guitar - just not for breafast, lunch, and dinner?

- Just amazing...

This band continues to make the most complex, well-balanced, gritty, melodic music that grips the soul. Do yourself a favor, put on the headphones sit back and prepare to be amazed! John P, John M, Jordan, Mike, James - job well done! Please don’t stop making music!

- Superb!!!!! Bravo!!!

Can’t stop listening to all of these great songs! Specially “At wits end”! Last solo spine chilling man! All the guys in the band thank you for these great songs! Petrucci, LaBrie, Rudess, Myung and Mangini! Thank You!!! Great musicality! Keep rocking out!!!

- This album is Astonishing...

Need to listen a few more times all the way through, but really liking it. Thanks to Dream Theater for staying true to their crafts. All of them! The third single, Paralyzed was my first favorite of the pre-releases and really left me wanting for more. Barstool Warrior, At Wit's End, and Pale Blue Dot, are probably the next standing out to me. The Viper King is the only song that is not meshing with me yet, but that is the bonus track anyways. Thanks so much to DT for an Astonishing album. D/T = Speed or Rate. Maybe this speaks to how fast the album came together after giving us over two hours of music a couple of years ago. Go listen to the guitar intro from Paralyed, the lyrics of Barstool Warrier, and the drums in Pale Blue Dot! I have to figure out how to see them in concert this go around.

- What we've all been waiting for.

If The Astonishing wasn't your thing, then this should be what you want. This album is Prog at it's finest. Instruments and vocals sound very good, it's put together very well, and it's also...a call back to what made them great. The length of the album shouldn't be an issue for anyone (They don't need to make 10+minute songs on every album). This album deserves 5 (or at least near) stars across the board because it's that good...it blew my mind
