matthewhedrick - Oklahoma! MY DUDES!Oklahoma for today!
Amazing!
Bjudeb - Can’t wait for the full album release! Please ignore the negative reviewer’s rating, as it’s obvious the rating was based on her expectations of the revival production, rather than this actual recording. Any slight bit of research regarding the revival will clearly state that this new production isn’t the same as the old one. Anyway, the new show is a glorious, fresh take on the classic production! And, how awesome it is to have an extremely talented actress in a wheelchair being included in the production! So far, “Oklahoma” is the only track released from the album at this time. But, in the number, the amazing talent of the cast is flawlessly presented! Go see the show and buy this cast recording as soon as it’s released! 5 stars!
sassy721 - New and refreshedCorrect, not my Mom’s Oklahoma. So much sexier and gritty. Damon sings the hell out of Beautiful Morning and Surrey. Loved seeing the show in person. Everyone is fantastic. Ali’s song is masterful
R4727 - Musical Alchemy! An outstanding production that breathes life into a badly outdated classic! This show deserves way more attention and acclaim than its received.
Without altering the original lyrics this cast makes the show relevant to 2019. The hokey can-do optimism of the original is replaced with an unflinching look at the doubt, fear, and sexism that the original papered over.
Purists will certainly object to the new arrangements, the stodgy lush orchestrations have been replaced by a crisp country six piece band, but the update is both loving and badly needed.
The real shame is that younger people may assume this is just a stodgy revival of the 1943 show. If you like Rent, Hedwig, or Hamilton this show is for you.
RobTy88 - Oklahoma as it always wanted to be.This production is far from your classic version of Oklahoma; yet it feels like this is what it ought to have always been. Not full of fluff or making light of any topic it fully embraces what Oklahoma was actually like during the settlement days. The music is brilliantly paired down to a 6 person band and the cast gives a breathe taking performance. Do not miss this.
amonarch87 - Superb! It’s like Oklahoma took a detour to Nashville on its way back to New York. I love it!
I have always wondered how the musical would sound if the music arranged in a more country western vein and I am not at all disappointed!
Stacie Rice 73 - Awesome!I wasn’t expecting to like this at all, but I ended up loving it.
Raybree - aliceknd wake upOpinions like that are what make theater stagnant. This was a production that took chances and succeeded more than failed.
aliceknd - NOT MY OKLAHOMAThis is NOT Rogers’ and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma; DON’T put their names in front of it! My mom and I went and saw this production on Broadway a few days ago EXPECTING a traditional version of Oklahoma, only to listen to a drunken country version of what WAS a beautiful soundtrack. We left at Intermission, sick of the travesty we had wasted good money to see.
I’d give it zero stars if I could. Do NOT ruin classics, PLEASE!!!!
Marc G.E. - Not Your Father's "Oklahoma!" (That's a Good Thing!!)This is definitely not a traditional staging of "Oklahoma." And that's the best thing about this. Who would ahve thought you could strip down the show to its stud sand have a foundation stronger than the original?
The American public has the over-saccharined movie version. That's the version that sits in the national conscioiusness. That version is still a part of this revision, except the complexity and emotions of the characters are brought to the forefront.
Oklahoma is forever changed, and yet, this is the same show that we have known for decades.
Matt2012:P - If you like Hadestown, this is for you.One of the best theatrical experiences I’ve ever had. The new orchestrations bring out a totally modern feel to a show that could easily be overlooked by a contemporary audience.
Devil's Food Cake - Oklahoma, OK!A unique revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic, Oklahoma. The orchestration is beautiful and fits the songs better than other version I’ve seen. Danny Daunno is a tour de force and reinvents the character of Curly. Ali Stroker’s, “I Caint Say No” is in my opinion, the best recording of the number. Overall the cast does an amazing job taking this show to new heights.
@ustin23 - This Oklahoma F***sOne of the most transformative pieces of theatre I’ve ever seen, this is not to be missed
brifuchs - Fine, but too Tennessee and a bit soullessI love the idea of a more sultry & down to earth take on Oklahoma. That makes sense. But this version seemed to push these characters into the Deep South is a way that is off putting to someone familiar with the way people from Oklahoma sound. It’s not Tennessee, but this production seemed to nail that sound. I’m also not sure that everyone cast has enough depth in their voices. The worst part is the soulless version of ‘Oklahoma’, again with more Nashville than made sense. It’s a musical, not a dialect study, but I still felt like mare effort could have been put into understanding what sounds would make sense. In the end, it’s fine. It’s the third or fourth best version. I’m glad it’s appealing to folks, but I’d love to one day see a well researched version do as well.
clever fellow - Sexy OklahomaI’m sorry, I’m sorry. The Dream Ballet was unwatchable in the theatre and it’s unlistenable here. OTHERWISE, wow, what a suburb capture of this alluring, erotic, feisty interpretation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s score. Every syllable is dripping with subtext, and I’m so happy this album stands firmly on its own as a valid, riveting chapter in this show’s long and beautiful life. These are the kinds of risks that keep theatre thriving and rich and very much alive. It’s lovingly produced and perfectly performed by a cast that comes at you like a bolt of lightning. Listen to this and let it not threaten your affection for the traditional OKLAHOMA! you know so well. Theatre is interpretation, NOT repetition. Enjoy.
JohnSpringSINYC - You’re Doin Fine, "Oklahoma!"For the longest time, I’ve had a personal distaste for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s "Oklahoma!" This came down to three elements: the music didn’t fit, most of the characters seemed hokey or phony, and most of the serious elements were either glossed over or treated like jokes. So when I heard about this revival, I thanked God.
This, in my opinion, should be the definitive version of "Oklahoma!" The serious elements are not only acknowledged but expounded upon, the characters have actual depth instead of just being cookie-cutter stock characters, and the music…. My GOD, the music! I haven’t been able to see the show yet, so I’ve been waiting for months to hear this album. Not only does the music fit the period far batter than the original (suiting the already perfect lyrics), but these might be some of the most haunting AND enchanting orchestrations I’ve ever heard.
You’re doin fine, Oklahoma.
#OklahomaOK
mrguy99 - This album is amazingI own the original cast recording of Oklahoma on vinyl and it’s amazing, but so this. This is an amazing revival.
mjteipner - Oh hell yeahThis isn’t the Shirley Jones treacly version. Every voice rings like a bell that has to be rung. See this production if you can. Hearing this recording is like hearing Oklahoma! for the first time.
PharaohJ - Not Your Momma’s OklahomaAin’t the shows fault that one reviewer and his mom went in with incorrect and narrow expectations. As if a country/western revival of Oklahoma isn’t a common sense idea! Give it a listen: You might say you’re in love.
Smarty hats - ExcellentExcellent vocal talent on Oklahoma, freshened and revitalized for our era!
#1 Hadestown Fan, Cassie.❤️🌹 - Oklahoma For A Modern Age 🖤Please go see this musical and buy this Cast Recording. I promise you won’t regret it. As soon as you hear Damon Daunno’s version of “Oh What A Beautiful Mornin!” you will see what a musical revival should be like.
Patrickster - Dreadful AbominationWith the exception of Ali Stoker who’s character is supposed to slightly off key and comical, every person in this cast has a horrible voice. Trying to get by using a phony country warble when you can’t hit the right note, doesn’t cut it in a show as iconic as OKLAHOMA! The producers of this show should never be let within 100 feet of another O & H musical EVER! What a joke.
