The Search- 10/10
True masterpiece, I kid you not that this song was so good I didn’t bother listening to any other tracks i immediately bought the album. When an album opens with a song like this you know it’s going to be special. The opening uses environmental ambiance as well as strings as it builds up to its opening like for ~30 seconds, normally this would be obnoxious for me but it’s done so professionally that it build excitement in me every time. Lyrics are fantastic and have stuck with me for a long time, especially the lyric about how “we all got something that we trapped inside”. Beat drop halfway through it is, again, fantastic. Bonus points also for referencing his next album “Hope” which wouldn’t come out until nearly 4 years after “The Search”
Leave Me Alone- 9/10
This song is 5 minutes long and I wouldn’t change that for the world. It has lighting quick lyrics, killer chorus, and once again NF opens his introverted heart and gives a view inside. Finally NF is putting himself in the driver seat and telling his doubts and doubters what HE thinks of THEM. Bonus points for continuing the conversation started in “NO NAME” (a single released before the album) which (admittedly) took me a while to get but now that I know it’s very rewarding as a fan to understand it.
Change- 9.5/10
A near perfect song. It’s mature, it’s quiet but loud in its message needing change despite it’s difficultly. It’s another “hopeful despite the hurt” song which personally has really resonated with me, and I don’t think I’m the only one. A line will always stick out to me “Last year I felt suicidal, this year I might do something different like talking to God.” Beat is slower than the previous two, making it stand out in its delivery. Works very well
