The Strokes - The New Abnormal

About The New Abnormal by The Strokes Album

"The New Abnormal" is the sixth studio album by American rock band The Strokes. It was released on April 10, 2020, through Cult and RCA Records. It comes nearly seven years after March 2013’s Comedown Machine, although the band had reunited briefly to release a three-track EP titled "Future Present Past" in June 2016. The album title "The New Abnormal" is a reference to the present age of environmental disaster. “There were these huge fires in Los Angeles,” Julian about their time recording. “A lot of houses burned down but Shangri-La survived, by some miracle. That’s where the name of the album comes from, the extreme weather, the violence…” Rumors of the album’s production began in July 2017, when Albert Hammond—father of The Strokes’ guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr.—mentioned that the band was in-studio with producer Rick Rubin in an interview with The West Australian. This rumor was quickly dispelled by Hammond Jr. in a since-deleted tweet, claiming: “Forgive Albert Sr he got prematurely excited. A lot of unknowns and nothing worth speaking about at this time.” He did concede, however, that “We met and played a few music ideas for Rick to feel out a vibe, but even a theoretical album plan would be years away, if at all.” Damage control continued with Julian joking on Twitter, saying: "(What Albert Sr meant to say is we are working with NBA point guard Ricky Rubio on a new offense for our basketball league)" Back in December 2018, the band announced a series of tour dates and a “global comeback” for 2019. The first event took place at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on May 13, where they performed a new song, titled “The Adults Are Talking.” The last concert of 2019 took place on New Year’s Eve at the Barclays Center in their hometown of Brooklyn, New York. They performed a new song titled “Ode to the Mets.” Julian Casablancas then confirmed: "Yeah, we’ve got a new album coming out soon. 2020, here we come. The 2010s, whatever the fuck they’re called, we took ‘em off. And now we’ve been unfrozen and we’re back. If you really love someone, you’ll be frozen with them. You know what? I don’t know what I say generally, and I ramble a lot, but I lo"ve you guys, and it’s a real honor to share the stage and this night with you guys. - via Rolling Stone (January 2020) News around the album’s actual release began on February 7, 2020, when Albert Hammond Jr. tweeted: “You think you’ve been waiting. But the wait has just begun. Welcome to the new abnormal.” Similar videos and promotions began appearing on the band members’ social media pages and billboards around the world. Leaked ASCAP listings for “songs written by Julian Casablancas” also revealed the tracklist and various co-writers on the album, including pop-rock icon Billy Idol. A few days later on February 10, 2020, the band played a live political rally in support of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. A short musical snippet of “At the Door” played before the concert, foretelling of the song’s official release the next day, along with the music video and the upcoming album’s tracklist and album art. The band also performed a new song titled “Bad Decisions,” which was released the following Tuesday, February 18, 2020, along with its accompanying music video. According to Albert Hammond Jr.’s Twitter, this would be the first official single for the new record. On April 6, 2020, the band released “Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus” as the final single preceding the album’s release. The New Abnormal debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 during the chart week of April 26, 2020 after selling approximately 35,000 album-equivalent units during its first week. On March 14, 2021, The Strokes won their first-ever Grammy Award for Best Rock Album of the Year at the 63rd Grammy Awards.

- Ear Candy to cram down your audio gullet

The Stokes serve up yet another scrumptious nine-course meal ideal for sonic gluttony! The New Abnormal has much to brag about with the melodic magnitude of the album, the fully completed and brilliantly executed themes, synchronized solos, virulent vocals, and sublime sound production. However, there are a few unique elements that also stand out: First, The Adults Are Talking. Yes, they are. True to form, The Strokes deliver a killer opening track. This has been a unique hallmark for the band: they consistently kick things off with a track that provides perfect tone for the entire album, which is typically one of the best songs on the album, but is rarely one of the "hit singles" for the album. The opening riff is an audio time machine that transports the listener right back into Room on Fire. But rather than vamp on nostalgia, The Strokes use it as a launchpad to further explore their sound. Another example of this can be found in Not the Same Anymore where the vocals and accompaniment during the chorus could easily be mistaken for a forgotten track on Is This It or Room on Fire. This experience happens throughout the album and is one of its most appealing qualities. Another deft touch is the candid studio banter embedded in a few of the songs. It conveys a genuine comradery amongst the group, which is especially pleasant given the well-documented history of discord among one another. That levity can also be felt when Jules uses lyrics that seem to speak directly to the band. One instance is in Ode to the Mets when he mumbles off mid-verse as if something doesn’t feel right and says, “Uh… drums please Fab?” Two other instances arrive in Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus (one of the album’s best songs) where at the end of the bridge, Jules sings, “Can we switch into the chorus, right now?” before going back into the chorus. Earlier in the song, he also says “break” as the music momentarily comes to an absolute stop. Ever since Room On Fire, there has been a separation of The Strokes fanbase. The purists, that believe only the first two albums embody the true essence of the group (including those who say it is only in the debut album), and the broader (but perhaps smaller) fanbase that appreciates the full body of their work. This might be the first album in nearly 20 years that appeals to both.

- Amazing Album

Great album from start to finish, one of their best!

- Welcome back, mad scientists!

Aside from the Strokes' creative mastery of songwriting, intricacies and layers, the production quality aboslutely blows my mind. The levels and "separation" between vox/instruments are perfect! Dreamy stuff, long live rock and roll bay-beeeeeeeeeee!!!!! And love that Basquiat reissue on the cover art -- the best of New Yawk City coming together like chocolate + peanut butter. .

- Masterpiece

Just press play and take in the layers of genius from this amazing band

Such a great album.. I’ve been listening through the album played from beginning to end the last few days and, as some have said, there are no bad songs, a few that just really stick see “why did you let them judge your body?” (Selfless) and for me a super ear worm in At The Door

I've been a fan of the strokes since they first put out "is this it". Their new album the new abnormal, is chock-full of hits one of the greatest albums I've ever listen to! If you don't agree with me, don't really care!

- Listened straight through

Tears, head-banging, swaying (I’m white), this album provoked so many different responses in just the first listen. Art.

Great album! These songs made quarantine a lot easier. Every song has something different and unique to show off and they still give my chills every time I listen to them, even a year after they’ve been released. The Strokes never disappoint!

- Great Strokes album

Will go down as one of their best and perhaps their most successful album so far.

- Lovely

Such a beautiful album 💙

- No Room for Blues-Rock Huh?

Wow, this should not have won a Grammy. The singer can barely even sing, no groove, no soul, bland and boring. I can see why they don’t like blues-rock.

- The adults are talking

Rocking to this, the strokes never disappoints!💕

- ll

Lll

- disappointed.

i got to hear a few of these songs live at their new year’s concert. i liked them both (ode to the mets & the adults are talking) better live. i was hoping they’d grow on me more after listening to the album enough, but they didn’t—i still wish they sounded as good as they had in person. almost all of my favorite songs on here are ruined by...something. eternal summer and selfless’s endings kind of peter out, and it’s disappointing because the rest of each song is so good. there’s an off-key guitar part right before the chorus in the adults are talking. the chorus in brooklyn bridge to chorus sounds sonically shallow in comparison to the rest of the song. none of the songs feel energising or immersive enough to me. that’s something that pretty much every other strokes song has made me feel. the production doesn’t really save it (rick rubin is not my favorite. he ruined californication). to me, this entire record just feels...tired. and that’s not because it’s more vulnerable than their other albums. also, a lot of the lyrics and guitar hooks sound very uninspired. i’m looking at you, bad decisions! that said, it isn’t a bad album. i’m just disappointed. i also don’t understand why so many fans love this album and hate comedown machine. is this it > comedown machine > room on fire > angles > first impressions > this

- What?

This won the Grammy for Rock?👎

- Listen the second time

I was given this vinyl record for Christmas, they said if you like weezer you will like the strokes. So, I listened, I have no clue how the two bands are familiar but this album is really good. I gave this 3 stars on the first listen. On a few weeks later I played it again and I completely loved it. The strokes take a while for you to like. So buy this and if you don’t like it the first time, wait a few days and play it again.
