Phish - Rift

About Rift by Phish Album

Rift is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Phish, released on February 2, 1993, by Elektra Records. It is a concept album, detailing the experience of a man dreaming about the rift in his relationship with his girlfriend. Rift was recorded in September and October 1992 and produced by Barry Beckett. Rift was certified gold by the RIAA on October 15, 1997. Rift marked the second time that the band had recorded a concept album, but the first—the rock opera–styled The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday—has never been officially released. All songs were written by Trey Anastasio and Phish lyricist Tom Marshall except "Mound" and "Weigh" by bass guitarist Mike Gordon and "Lengthwise" by drummer Jon Fishman. The instrumental, "All Things Reconsidered", is an intentional variation on the theme to the National Public Radio news show All Things Considered, and has been featured on the show itself several times. An orchestral version of the song appears on Trey Anastasio's 2004 solo album Seis De Mayo. Gordon stated that Rift was "more integrated", as the different styles of the band were mixed together within each song, rather than between each song like on their previous album, A Picture of Nectar. Gordon also stated that he thought the album was a "little bit mellower", and that the songwriting showed more maturity. The cover art was created by New York-based painter David Welker, who worked closely with the band during winter 1993 in order to visually depict each of the album's tracks in a single image, with the notable exception of "The Horse". (For this reason, a horse intentionally appears on the cover of Phish's next album, Hoist.) Relix magazine listed Rift as one of the ten most iconic album covers of all time in 2007. Elektra promoted Rift with a videotape sent to college radio stations and record stores that featured a six-minute promotional film about the album.

- My favorite Phish album

In my opinion the first few (I forget how many) Phish albums up to and including this one are the best. All are perhaps equally great, with different flavors and colors in the music. But when this one first came out it impressed me more than anything before it, and has done so more than anything since. It is almost a concept album, which is interesting, and it is as dark and cool in tone as its cover is in color. The songs flow together and reflect an intense attention to continuity on the part of the band. It's grown on me since its release, what's more. Not only my favorite Phish record, it stands among my favorite records of all time. I wish I had it on vinyl.

- great album

this is the album that got me started on phish. now im a total phish head. i advise it to anyone who enjoys jam bands, rock, or music in general

- one of the best...

this album was my first exposure to phish back in the early 90's. i fell in love with this band because of songs such as weigh, sparkle and silent in the morning. this album is a must have for anyone who values musical diversity. kick back, close your eyes and get lost in the beautiful sound that phish produces. enjoy!

- Rift!

Rift was my third Phish album and take it from a new fan of the music, go for something a little less absurb first. But I grew to love this record and once you work through some of the more obscure tracks (i.e. lengthwise which is brilliant but creepy for a new listener) you find some amazing stuff here. Wedge, Horn, My Friend My Friend, there is so much excellent songwriting on this album. The jams are tight and have just the right amount of out-of-key meandering to make them interesting. Sonically and musically it is one of the best CD's I own; iTunes writes it off as bad, but don't listen to them per se. Dive in and think for yourself.

- Dreamy...

An excellent example of phish's development. Pivotal album.

- Rift

Nicely balanced. Well defined song forms. This album features in-tune vocal harmonies, melodic events galore, and an inner fire that listeners can't resist. Listen carefully for detail.

- Rift

Not just my favorite Phish album, but top five of all time material...

- Great album

Rift is a master piece

- This is the best studio album

Well, this and Hoist. Rift, It's Ice and SITM are three of my favorite live songs to here. Thank God I had a chance to see all of them live. Don't be a hater. this also is a great story album and if you pay attention it tells of a twisted and dark trip through sleeping and dreaming. You won't be disappointed.

- Simply Incredible

Phish's tightest studio album, Rift is the closest you can get to the sound of a live show in a studio effort. Trey is simply at his best here, and Page really pushes him with some incredible piano work. If you like guitar, buy this album.

- An icy clump of life beneath the ground.

This is Phish's finest studio work. At times it can be very loose and fun (Sparkle), at at other the band develops a deep concept and underlying storylines (My Friend, My Friend). The overall theme behind this album creates a systematic flow for the whole album conveyed through wonderful guitar transitions and perpetual rythym. This hands down is the finest album the band has created and a must for anyone who loves Phish. If you have never heard this album you are not a true phan.

- what!?!?!?!

This is not the best studio album. If you think it is, you probably just bought the new JT album as well.

- My Friend

I always thought My Friend My Friend on this was the best studio recording Phish ever did. So much energy and tension.

- Truly Amazing

Read other reviews if you want a critic because I love this album! For me it's nostalgia with awesomely written music and thought provoking lyrics.

- Rift

This was the 1st phish album I ever bought. It's been game on ever since!!!!!!!! I heard itunes rated this album low. They have no IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Stoner City

Phish was stoned when they made this album! TOKEN' IT UP WITH PHISH

- A Great Story

I love listening to this entire album at once b/c it follows a story of a man through a seires of dream sequences. You can just picture to events in your head. I love it. Just sit back, light up, and enjoy!

- Sleep Walking Music

This is really all I can say about this album, that and ice. "It's Ice" is a great song by any measure, love the riffs, love the Rift...

- Listen to the whole Album….

EPIC….Great Jam Band Studio Album…….why I love Phish…..

- This Is Mike Gordon At His Best

Mound is one of Phish's best songs, especially with the mix of Mike's cheerful voice, and with such a play on words. "At the last hill he realized he had circled back around, round a back circle, round a back, realized."

- From the bottom

Not one of my favorite Phish albums, in fact probably my least favorite. Musically Rift sounds good but the vocals and lyrics are way off from other Phish albums. Yes I know it is a concept type album... but maybe that is the problem. If you're looking for a Phish album from this era check out Picture of Nector.

- Phish

I can't tell you how many times I've played this disk from start to finish.....WONDERFUL

- Phish's best studio effort

This is an amazing record. Phish and Tom Marshall were really at the top of their game, both musically and conceptually.

- Pheaver for the phlavor

Any phish i'm able to get my hands on us a fantastic album but I found a special soft spot for this awsome album Keep on phishin

Rift Wiki

In geology, a rift is a linear zone where the lithosphere is being pulled apart and is an example of extensional tectonics. Typical rift features are a central linear downfaulted depression, called a graben, or more commonly a half-graben with normal faulting and rift-flank uplifts mainly on one side. Where rifts remain above sea level they form a rift valley, which may be filled by water forming a rift lake. The axis of the rift area may contain volcanic rocks, and active volcanism is a part of many, but not all, active rift systems. Major rifts occur along the central axis of most mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust and lithosphere is created along a divergent boundary between two tectonic plates. Failed rifts are the result of continental rifting that failed to continue to the point of break-up. Typically the transition from rifting to spreading develops at a triple junction where three converging rifts meet over a hotspot. Two of these evolve to the point of seafloor spreading, while the third ultimately fails, becoming an aulacogen.
