Deftones - Ohms

About Ohms by Deftones Album

Ohms (stylized as _Ohms on physical editions) is the ninth studio album by American alternative metal band Deftones, released on September 25, 2020, through Reprise Records. It reached number 5 on the Billboard 200. Musically, Ohms has been described as an alternative metal and dream pop album. It is the first Deftones album since their eponymous 2003 album to be produced by Terry Date, although the last time the band had worked with him was during the sessions of the unreleased album Eros in 2008. It is also their first album on which Stephen Carpenter utilizes a nine-string guitar. The cover art was designed by Frank Maddocks, who had worked with Deftones on each of their albums since White Pony. There are total of 12,995 dots on the cover art. Many fans believed that the design paid tribute to the band's original bassist Chi Cheng, who died in 2013, as the eyes that appear on the cover art lined up closely with a photo of him. Band drummer Abe Cunningham stated in an interview that this was merely a coincidence, however. He added that the cover art idea reminded him of the 1980s, specifically the music video for Prince's 1984 song "When Doves Cry". Shortly before the album's release, Deftones launched the "Adopt a Dot" campaign, allowing for people to purchase one of the dots on the artwork as their own. A photo of the purchaser would then appear as the dot they purchased and be a part of the "Ohms Adopt a Dot digital experience" viewable online. All of the proceeds from the campaign were given to both the UC Davis Children's Hospital and Crew Nation relief fund. The band began teasing the album's release with a week-long digital campaign in August 2020. Deftones released cryptic social media posts, their official website and animations through Spotify's Canvas feature that when solved revealed the word "ohms" and longitudinal coordinates for a billboard in Los Angeles teasing the album artwork. The campaign concluded with a formal announcement for Ohms and a music video for the album's first promotional song, "Ohms". The music video for "Ohms" was directed by Rafatoon and featured what Rolling Stone described as, "band performance video interspersed with scenes from a dystopian world, mirroring the musically and lyrically heavy song sentiments." At the time of release, vocalist Chino Moreno described "Ohms" as a "a good scope of where this record's at," though in a separate interview producer Terry Date didn't feel like the song was a good choice for the album's lead promotional track. Deftones were originally scheduled to tour North America in support of Ohms with Gojira and Poppy in July to September 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour was postponed until 2021. Ohms received acclaim from critics. At Metacritic, the album received an average score of 88, based on 19 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". AllMusic critic Neil Z. Yeung thought that Deftones "take their signature beauty-meets-brutality assault, searching for balance across a tightly focused ten tracks." Yeung further stated: "As a unit, they haven't sounded this refreshed in years." Consequence of Sound's Joseph Schafer described Ohms as "their hardest-hitting effort in years" and "a record that hints at a purified blend of their contrasting influences in its finest moments." Ben Tipple of DIY praised Date’s production work and stated: "If any of Deftones’ previous records are guilty of lacking focus (you decide), ‘Ohms‘ is certainly safe from future vitriol." Describing Ohms as "truly and honestly a breath of fresh air," Exclaim! critic Adam Wallis thought that the record was "just as unique and innovative as each album before it." The Independent's Roisin O'Connor regarded the album as "an intriguing addition to the band’s canon," while David McLaughlin Kerrang! likened the it to a "greatest hits [record] from a parallel plane of existence, yet dense enough to demand deeper exploration." Writing for NME, James McMahon described Ohms as "heavy stuff, both sonically and in emotional clout." Andy Crump of Paste regarded the album as "an engrossing refinement of what they’ve become over years of risk-taking and experimentation." Sputnikmusic staff critic SowingSeason thought that the record "surpasses Deftones’ other iconic releases is in its dense, unpredictable layering and sheer intensity." He further stated: "There aren’t many traits present on Ohms that we’ve never heard from the band before,... but they’ve woven all these glimpses of previous albums together and improved upon them in nearly every facet." In a more mixed review, The Guardian's Dean Van Nguyen wrote that the album "lacks the lateral thinking that distinguished the band’s masterpiece, White Pony." Nevertheless, Nguyen further explained: "Still, by streamlining their sound, Deftones have made an album that proves that ferocity is not a diminishing resource."

- On point

Impressive stuff. Have my favorites. Need to listen more to the songs I’ve listened to less. Deftones are awesome & so is this album. Worth every sent of the $8 cost here.

- Awesome album

Love it. Especially the title track.

- Deftones Forever

Deftones are such a dependable band and you always know what you’re getting with Deftones: A quiet but slightly menacing buildup of sound paired with Chino Moreno’s dreamy singing which then explodes into a groovy and aggressive racket. The soft/loud dynamic of their sound always appealed to me because it gives their music contrast and a trancelike quality — it’s contemplative, zone-out music but at the same time, you can rock the house down at deafening volume while enjoying a few cold ones. Lastly, Moreno still has it! The way he effortlessly switches from gentle croon to screaming and wailing like a caged animal is still mesmerizing after all these years. Ohms delivers and then some.

- Great album

While the engineering sounds more like an early band album. It only adds to the uniqueness with how many years Deftones has been rolling on. Similar in style to Gore, Ohms seems to take a lot of influence from Adrenaline. I've listened to the album for multiple weeks while working out and Ohms adds the perfect amount of rythym, drive, and inspiration to get me to several new personal records. Radiant City a song I initially disliked had an invogorating response during a run that recalled memories of late 90s hard rock/alternative culture. There is also a very interesting clash between the melancholy drone of certain songs and the sudden hopeful crescendo of the chorus. I can understand why certain people wouldn't like it, music is subjective. I love it.

- 🤟🏼

- What an album

Will make your 2020 immensely better

- Sad

This i s not a good album at all, and I used to love Tones but Gore was really disspointing and this just continues the thrend. The voacals are forgettable and at points grading & the lyris are repetative and kinda silly. Abe is whatever on this, Sergio did ok. The biggest let down is Stephs 9 string crap. Every riff is the same tempo, same 3 notes etc. Its obvious there not the same band and it happens. The only good song is ohms.

- Amazing!!!

Delicious deftones musiic

- The Deftones Have Done It Again

I can listen to this album from beginning to end without skipping a single track which is extremely rare for me. They haven’t sounded THIS good in years, I’m sold.

- Yay!!!

Bought it. Listened to a few songs while on the go and wasn’t terribly impressed. Then eventually I sat myself down, focused and listened to the whole thing...I friggin just love this MASTERPIECE!!! I think it’s beauteous. It’s got a crazy vibe. It’s been a jacked up year and it’s just what I needed. About 22 years ago I walked into a record store, looking for something new. On a total whim (I liked the album covers) I decided to pick up Adrenaline and Around the Fur ...I’ve been in love ever since. You’re my favorite all time band. Lastly, APPLE DIGITAL MASTER SQ is fantastic!

- Just wow!!!!

I'm just going to say I'm very impressed with this album. Unfortunately I didn't get into them until White Pony. My musical taste and understanding have grown over the years. I have come to realize that musicans change......adapt. I have absolutely loved their transitions and can relate to their changes. They wouldn't be artists if they keep repeating the same material. I'm not saying that I can relate to their music but the key is to try to understand their change and try to understand what they are feeling. They are one of the bands that if you catch their live show, their energy is unreal! You can feel the emotion, you feel the energy. That's what I have grown to love about music. It's an art. It's all about interpretation. I love this album and haven't put it down since I purchased it. Radiant City is definately my favorite track. Keep up the good work gentleman! Hope to see you guys on tour!!!

OHMS is amazing hands down!!! love it from beginning to end!!!

- Amazing

This is the best deftones album since Saturday night wrist. I’m definitely getting white pony vibes. This album is beautifully dark+skater punk+mysterious. It’s kind of like a better version of diamond eyes.

- Love it!!

Great album and grooves. I love the simplicity of this album and the effectiveness of the music. There are a lot of special moments in these songs where the music hits just right and would sound great live. Must buy.

- Epic

Long time Deftones fan. This album slaps. Old sound with some newer twists. Every song is great start to finish and in my opinion this is their best album to date.

- Boring

Music hasn’t been good since they lost Chi.

- Mesmerizing

Deftones is one of my favorite bands, and while this album took a few listens for it to click for me, I believe it’s easily one of their best and most concise! Personally I think this is their best since SNW. Favorite tracks: Pompeji, Ceremony, Spell of Mathematics

- Disappointed... at first

I LOVE DEFTONES! This album wasn’t what I thought it would be because I heard rumors that it sounded like around the fur and white pony. When the album dropped I listened to the entire album and was disappointed. Fast foreword to today and now I’m loving this album. I guess I just had to get rid of my expectations of what I thought the album would be and let it be what it is which is really a great album in its entirely. Please guys, don’t break up and chino keep doing your side projects!

- Great album

I greatly appreciate Deftones music

- It’s deftones

Bands evolved and experiment. Deftones are the deftones you cant copy. 🎼🎸raw to raw

- Ohms

- Might as well be a Team Sleep album

If you like their harder sound you will not like this album. Long time fan, and when I listen to a Deftones album I want to hear songs like Bored, Around the Fur, Elite, etc. This is an album you play in the background before you go to sleep. It really belongs under his side project Team Sleep if you ask me...

- Yes

- One of the best albums of 2020

Great album!

- Praetoreon is a fkng idiot , that doesn’t know music !

Praetoreon with his review is a fkng idiot ! You can’t expect the band to write the same album 8 x’s . Adrenaline was amazing, as well as around the fur . But , they are different in their own beauty. Thought they couldn’t write the same way as Deftones self titled, and couldn’t move forward from that vein of groove and aggression and heart . Metallica couldn’t write and justice for all for the next album , because that record was recorded . Saying your disappointed in Deftones at all pisses me off , and your should just quit listening to them . Great album , epic songs

- Just beautiful

Classic and beautiful deftones. Chino you’re the man.

- Best Album Since White Pony

What a turn for me with this album. Like at least one other viewer, when I first skimmed through this on iTunes, at not very high album, I said, "Meh." After a few more listens, I find myself endlessly looping this album. Very similar progression that I had with Tool's Fear Inoculum album. This album gets better with each listen. It reintroduces some raw riffage not heard since Adrenaline, combined with ATF's power and heaviness, and the ethereal beauty of White Pony - basically the best of their best three albums, in one. Best tracks for me are Error and Urantia, followed closely by Genesis, Spell of Mathematics, while Ceremony and This Link is Dead are fast growing on me. Lifelong roadie fan here says buy the whole thing, you won't be sorry. Strong work Deftones!

- Hauntingly Beautiful

Amazing record from an amazing group of individuals, together that form “Deftones”. This is a beautiful compilation of music that can be listened from start to finish, no skipping needed. Chino never disappoints me...and Stephan gets his part in Ohms... this album is a gem, and a must have for any fan of this band. If I could give it 10 stars I would. 1 love for Chi.

- Awesome album!!!

Off of first listen I knew it was good, so I listened to it again and it got even better.

- 👑

- Incredible

My favorite Deftones album since Diamond Eyes. Top notch stuff right here.

DEFTONES ARE BACK! Chino on point with the melodic vocals, Abe’s drumming 👍 Stephens crazy guitar rifs! RIP CHI CHENG! I know he’s be proud of this.... WE NEED ANOTHER “AROUND THE FUR” type album please!

- Amazing!

It’s like all of their album’s combined into one great masterpiece!

- Amazing

Another wonderful Deftones album.

- Not heavy. But it’s metal

Beautiful voice and lyrics. Good music just to listen to in the car

- Unbelievable!!!

What a great album. It’s been in repeat since it came out.

- Grew on me!

Wasn’t too impressed at first, but definitely grew on me! I dig the atmosphere. Radiant City is a banger. The more I listen to this record the more I love it. Heavier than their last one.

- Great album!

Error and headless are my favorite songs! The rest of the album is beautiful.

- 2020 just became fun

Love it. These guys took there time. And really devoted themselves to one of the best albums they have created. Congrats. Gentlemen. Well done. (Shot of tequila)

- Deftones! ‘Nuff said...

Everyone wants to be a critic now days but as an AVID listener to that sweet Deftones sound this is another album that soothes my Soul. Each an every album has its differences but just as we as people we all are unique so as for me no matter what they put out I’m happy and surely already look forward to the next one as I enjoy this one allday everyday.

- Needs no explanation.

The best.

- Best thing of 2020!

Album does not disappoint, best thing to happen this year.

- Very Good!

I’ve been listening to it for days already. It hooks, it’s raw and atmospheric. Kinda the music I needed. 9 studio albums later and it’s inherently Deftones and still dynamic. Pretty cool.

- It’s good

Very good

- Umm what

What is this I’ve never heard of it

- Wow!!

- Awesome!!!!!!

- Quality

Best since Diamond Eyes 🤘🏻

- Beauty meets chaos.

Deftones is my favorite band has been a part of my personality for the better part of ten years. This album is like a little brother to White Pony and I cannot continue to rave about it enough. I love this band with all my heart and this album is just another cherry to the cake. Thank you deftones. You have done it again!!!!

- Killer Album

I’ve been slow catching on and getting into Deftones, besides some of their classic singles. But this album is deadly, and has really been hitting the spot for me.

- Another great album from Deftones

Gore was disappointing. This more than makes up for that last album. The stongest tracks are This Link Is Dead, Pompeji, Radiant City, Ohms, and Genesis. The weakest track is The Spell of Mathematics (though I love the title)

- :(

It’s unfortunate because I’m a huge fan of Deftones, and I was eagerly awaiting this album. Unfortunately it wasn’t good. Major let down. Sorry :(

- Even at 8$ a rip off

The price point of this album is an indication of how bad this album is. When even your first single is nothing to write home about it it gives you a clue of the rest of the album. 1 star congrats.

- Mastery

So glad these guys still making music

- New Deftones

Ohms is a fitting title for the new Deftones album. This album is colourful, it has all of the components that make up who the Deftones are. The guitars are upfront, both heavy and ethereal. There are elements of early Deftones on this album. They create bigger sound landscapes and melodies here.. Guitarist Stephen Carpenter and vocalist Chino Moreno collaborate well on Ohms.

- Love it so far.

Love 'ohms' so far! Can't wait for the entire record to come out. Deftones, always high quality, high production, great sounding records always!

Always catchy, pulsating riffs, haunting vocals and social political lyrics that resonate with everyone, another hit!

love this album! each song is a banger!!

- Fav album of the year 🤙

Only recently got into Deftones, and I can safely say that there up there with the best bands ever!! Love this album, definitely one of their best ones!!!

- Flawless!!!

Once again the Deftones defy categorization and create another timeless masterpiece! Genesis and Pompeji are the bands new classics!!

- Deftones at their best! 🤘💪

Such a good album. Deftones never disappoint. This album covers all their previous work into 1. Such a banging album

- Deftones are back!

A triumphant return to form after Gore. Ohms will please all Deftones fans. It’s one of their best albums they’ve made!

- Deftones back to their best

After experimental album Gore, which missed the mark several years ago. Ohms is a well crafted piece of work with driving riffs over Chinos voice which again has all the hallmarks from previous releases come through his tones. Lead singles such as Ohms and Genesis may already be fan favourites. However songs such as Error and Radiant City with its infectious guitar work will soon overtake those previously mention. The moody Pompeji is like being thrown around in the waves before the storm passes by and things calm down. Deftones have always done well in crafting there own emotion and style through their music. Ohms back with the quality of Date producing the album, brings the Deftones into form here . Certainly worth the wait and one of 2020s best albums you will here.

- BroadenCity

First single ‘Ohms’ is glorious and uplifting for an album closer. Ending positive, the future looks promising. Very Devin Townsend-ish uplift, but this is Deftones through and through. Thank Gaia they dropped this during the shortest year for this generation. Pre-ordered. Avoided the leaks. Can not wait for the rest. Thank you for the music Deftones, love from Australia, always

- sublime , magnificent and explosive.

Very possible that Deftones have just released , not only the album of year and perhaps of their entire career , but also the best heavy rock album of the decade..... Big claims ? Perhaps.....but before you take issue with me for them ,go find a pair of decent headphones , shut yuour eyes and disappear into Ohms. Perhaps?

- Just buy

From the 90s too now still making banging albums

- Promising so far

As someone who is a massive fan of their earlier work this album seems very positive so far with the first 2 releases
