- Perfect.

Growing up in a large family whose parents were intent on us learning to play an instrument and understand music theory, I heard many pieces on the commutes we took to and from the library, music lessons, church, and whatever else we were doing. I heard many classical pieces. My mother had a fondness for Beethoven and Mendelssohn. My eldest brother went through a Paganini phase, as well as more obscure violinist composers such as rode, but few composers, nor compositions, stuck with me like Bach’s Chaconne and Mozart’s requiem. My mum would blast the Mozart requiem on long car rides, she thought it sacrilegious to interrupt the piece so it was reserved mostly for road trips. That sound, the haunting, harrowing, mortality. Something dark, yet angelic. As though God had written it. A window into the true mournful heart of God. Well, this recording she had was on a CD. And my brother burned that disk onto our desktop and had it in his iTunes account. I used his account for years, but the last phone I had that still had his stuff on it, was tragically destroyed on the job. I searched for YEARS trying to find the recording my mum had. She had tragically lost the CD. I realized to my horror that not all recordings are created equal. I couldn’t even listen to this masterpiece because all the versions I could find were subpar in some way. The tempo was off, or someone coughed, or one of the vocalists scooped a note! Horrors! The other thing is that mom’s recording had a beautiful Fugue that followed the lacrimosa, it was so seamless it was as though it was part of the same movement. A beautiful otherworldly nameless tune dubbed “track 12” in my memory. How it haunted me! None of the other Mozart requiem recordings have it! It’s like I was remembering a piece embedded in my soul that didn’t exist. And yet anytime I heard the lacrimosa I could hear that fugue interject at the end in my head. That perfect childhood memory of a perfect recording of a perfect piece was out of reach. Well, here it is. This is the recording. After searching far and wide I found it. And it’s as beautiful as the day I lost it. I can finally enjoy this masterwork again.
