The title track which was released today is amazing! Classic Styx sound!!! Update! The new release from this album (Reveries) is an amazing tune with a great catchy melody, 5 part harmonies, and killer guitar solo!! This is classic Styx!! These guys keep getting better!!
Just don’t get music like this anymore,
Styx What a what a great album It’s likeParadise theater with a twist! They did it again
Cool cover art, but my title pretty much says it all. Musically, it's good and the band is playing pretty solidly. But there's nothing here that STICKS ;-) Plus, who thought it would be a good idea to throw autotune onto JY's voice. Now he REALLY sounds like a cat in heat. Weak vocals over all...ESPECIALLY when compared to the new offering by the outed founding member. And, you have to compare, since this album was purposefully released at the same time.
Some may say that there are too many dinosaurs wandering the Earth. This is possibly true, but Styx is by far the best Geezer Band still standing. Impeccable musicianship, fresh ideas mixed in with their classic sound, and great production make this single stand out for me. Dying to hear the whole album.
Only verse I really enjoyed: One nation, indivisible, heads in the sand ‘cause we weren’t invisible. I had high hopes. The album as a whole is well produced. Hard to say I have a favorite song. Cyclorama has some really good songs. The Mission is like watching a movie I like. But Crash of the Crown I have a hard time wrapping my brain around. Sounds similar to the last album. So if this is the new Styx sound going forward then I will listen out of duty and loyalty but for someone looking for STYX of old you will not find it here. That STYX is gone gone gone.
What's not to like? Styx has and always will Rock.
Great new music, draws on classic Styx sounds while progressing their sound. Big vocal harmonies. Ok, the DDY crowd are now going to start ripping this release and the band. After 20+ years they are still upset about his ousting, but I wouldn’t work with anyone who made me miserable, they seem quit happy and having fun since he’s been gone. As for the band not having any hits in 20 years, you’d be hard pressed to find a classic rock band that does, including DDY. This argument is ridiculous. With the Mission they did have some chart success, also with their cover of I am the Walrus. Instead of enjoying new music from both camps, they are being disrespectful, and that’s sad. Enjoy the new great music, ignore the trolls.
They never disappoint, this album is amazing!!! You guys ROCK my WORLD!!! Dan Nielsen says this is a 10 and two thumbs up 😊✌️🎶
Somehow I am ways late finding out about them, but I always find them exactly when I need to.
Incredible first single off of Crash, and having all three vocalists on the same track is a first and hopefully not the last.
Bring back Dennis DeYoung! This is a complete pile of cow dung! 🤮
It's as if they traveled back in time and stole the wonderful sounds of the '70s and brought it back to now where there's such a scarcity. The first single nails that classic Styx/ELO/Supertramp sound, but does so without sounding like it's desperately clinging to the past. You can tell the musicians on this album are enjoying the music they're making together. As long as they're enjoying it, there's a really good chance we will too. The first single is a good indicator.
Crash Of The Crown draws sonically from Styx’s legacy and propel the band forward failthfully representing their current lineup and sound. The songs are very strong and the production is top notch. This album rewards repeat listeners with a feast of hooks, strong melodies, great guitar work and some excellent prog-rock moments.
Styx continue to amaze me with their talent for staying in the limelight with new material but staying true to the sound of past works
I own every Styx album. I grew up with them as one of my favorite bands. Losing Dennis DeYoung was horrible for the band. The last two albums have been OK. I don’t have anything against Gowan. He is a fine musician and can pull off the classics. It’s the new stuff that doesn’t grab me. It’s just OK. There are many songs that I hear a distinct Queen influence. That’s not the Styx I want to hear. I wish they could put aside their differences and make one more classic Styx album.
This is the missing link between Grand Illusions and Pieces of Eight. Definitely their best record in 40 years! I'd rank it in their top 5 or 6, honestly
After iconic Grand Illusion & Pieces of Eight offerings, this new album belongs in same discussion with Cornerstone, Paradise & Kilroy as a Styx must-have collection. (I'm) amazed after all these years Shaw & company produce yet another great album! Bravo!
I really, REALLY wanted to like this album.... I'm one of those first generation Styx fans who grew up just a few miles down the road from where the group first formed and can remember the days when Styx came to our local high school to play at sock hops before they hit the big time. (My best friend's older sister interviewed a member of the band for the school's 1975 yearbook, just as "Lorelei" was hitting it big.) But ever since Dennis DeYoung - co-founder and the band's heart and soul for so many years - was ousted the band calling itself "Styx" seems more like a tribute band - and not a particualrly good one at times. Unfortunately this album does nothing to alter my opinion in this regard; while a couple of the songs come close to recapturing the old magic, by and large it is a tedious affair with not a single track that can stand alongside such Styx classics as "Lady," "Come Sail Away," "Renegade" or "Rockin' The Paradise." I take no joy in saying so; in their prime I was as big a Styx fan as you would have been likely to find. But this album simply reaffirms my belief that the band stopped being Styx when DeYoung was shown the door. To those who like the album: Great, I'm happy it moves you and more power to you. But to me it;s just not the real Styx.
The musicianship is excellent as usual. Great comeback for the lead single.
Great songs, great arrangements. Amazing production value coupled with Todd Sucherman’s incomparable drumming. Just buy it, get in your 1978 Chevy truck, and crank it up.
The Mission proved a remarkable accomplishment for Styx. The new album doesn’t quite stack up but Styx fans won’t be disappointed. The production is absolutely top notch and the sound is bold. The lyrics swing a little cliche and don’t match up well with the bold melodies, but that’s on me as a listener. This is a four star release without question.
im sick and tired of the so called fans of styx. their not the same as they were with dennis. no kidding at that time he was going into a different direction than the others he wanted to do theatre ok so styx moved on without him. this new lineup has been around for 20 years+ thats longer than when dennis was a member. if you dont like styx without dennis dont listen fine support dennis's music fine but shut up my opinion dennis still sounds show tune and ballads style thats fine i just dont listen to his music anymore. but i dont cry about it as for the new styx cd im looking forward to it. i really liked the mission cd im sure this will be good for my liking to if not so be it im not going to cry about it i just wont listen to it p.s. dennis is the reason styx are not in the rock n roll hall of fame. i have listen to crash of the crown many times. all in all i like it, maybe one or two songs im not crazy about.i also think most songs are too short some i think could be longer other than that im pleased with it
As a fan starting in 1978 this is the first Styx release I’ve listened to start to finish multiple times over and over and over since the The Grand Illusion. The song writing, musicianship, production, and singing is strong from start to finish. This is my second fave Styx album ever!
Although a lifelong metalhead, one of the few non-metal bands I listened to growing up was Styx. I enjoyed the progressive elements suggestive of early Rush and the great Iron Maiden, while its soulful and fantastical elements gave the songs an expansive, deeper quality. That, of course, was the Styx largely created by Dennis DeYoung and, when he was shafted from the band, he took that rare genius with him. The current iteration of Styx would never have approached the success of the 70s and early 80s without DeYoung. Their latest undistinguished material suggests they might not have even gotten a record contract. As evidenced by these two songs, Styx continues to flail and chase its tail looking for a new musical direction. It still hasn’t found it and sadly continues to try to replicate classic Styx. Both songs rely heavily on the escalating keyboard riffs of the DDY era while transitioning into the guitar parts that is supposed to give the songs drive and vitality. Instead, the keyboards sound the same and the guitars are bland and fall flat. The rest of the songs might prove me wrong once the album is released. However, as the material released after DDY suggests, they’re more concerned with showing they can replicate old Styx than creating anything that progressively moves the brand name forward. In contrast, DeYoung’s “With All Due Respect...” on his last album demonstrates that he - and not Styx- is the only one rocking these days. Questions of a Styx reunion have been raised for over 20 years and maybe it’s time Shaw and JY take them seriously. I don’t know what heinous crimes against humanity DDY committed against them but, barring any truly damaging transgressions, their continued rancor seems obsessive and self serving. There’s no reason why they can’t pocket their egos and DTSD (DeYoung Traumatic Stress Disorder) - maybe even forgive and forget - and give it a try for the fans. The quality and reception of their later work speaks for itself. It’s been 20 years since the breakup and they haven’t even approached a respectable chart placement or memorable song since then. They clearly haven’t improved things. Today, it’s glorified quasi-cover band incapable of any lasting musical contributions. It’s the Styx music of the DDY era that people go to see today and still defines the band’s reputation. If Shaw and JY really love the fans as much as they say they do, it’s time for a reunion. If not, stop playing songs from the DDY era and stand on the material produced afterward. Like these songs and the later material prove, they’re a different band - and one not anywhere near of the level of the original.
This is unbelievable. And excellent
I love Styx. I also prefer this lineup with Gowan. I am so excited that they can all still sing and that they still come out with new music.
As usual (and i can't say this for many bands) Styx records a new album, and you can tell they really enjoy making music and recording new songs, instead of "just record to keep our presence" in the world. Since Cyclorama, i've always been excited now about new music from the Styx Camp. And with all the line up changes that have happened, now having the Great Ricky Phillips on bass since 2013? The band still commands the stage, Having this Album peak at # 4 just last week, and playing live with OUT backing tracks. The track "Coming out the other side" will resonate with many after the Pandemic we have gone through. great message. The band is able to tour year after year, because you are only good as your last performance!
Not bad. Not great, but we’ll worth a listen.
Weird.
