Barbra Streisand - The Second Barbra Streisand Album

About The Second Barbra Streisand Album by Barbra Streisand Album

The Second Barbra Streisand Album is the title of Barbra Streisand's second solo studio album. It was released in August 1963, just six months after the release of her debut album, The Barbra Streisand Album, and was recorded in four days in June 1963. In 1963, Streisand told a reporter: "My new album is called The Second Barbra Streisand Album, because that's just what it is. Why should I give it some fancy name that no one remembers anyway?" Radio stations received mono and stereo blue vinyl promo albums, making this Columbia's first Streisand colored vinyl. The album made its digital debut on CD in 1987 and was re-released in a remastered CD edition on October 19, 1993. "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home" was first introduced in the musical St. Louis Woman. "Right as the Rain" was originally performed by Celeste Holm and David Brooks in the 1944 musical Bloomer Girl. Tony Bennett also recorded a version of the song in 1960 for his album A String of Harold Arlen. "Down with Love" was previously recorded in 1940 by Eddie Condon's Orchestra with vocals by Lee Wiley. "Who Will Buy?" is originally from the musical Oliver! (1960). "When the Sun Comes Out" was originally performed by Tommy Dorsey in 1941. "Gotta Move" was written specifically for Streisand by composer Peter Matz. It was later re-recorded for the TV special Color Me Barbra and its soundtrack album. "Lover, Come Back to Me" was introduced in the operetta The New Moon (1928) by Evelyn Herbert. "Like a Straw in the Wind" is performed as a medley with "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home"

- Barbra Volume Two

This lp, released six months after it's predecessor, follows pretty much the same formula as the first, indeed most of these songs and the material for the first lp were recorded at the same session(s). As the All Music Guide already mentioned, attention turned to the pen of Harold Arlen, he would record his own album of self-penned songs and Barbra would "special guest" on that lp, singing a gorgeous "House Of Flowers" solo and would duet with Arlen on a 60's style go-go arrangement of "Ding Dong, The Witch Is Dead." Harold's singing style can be described as "eclectic." This lp features magnificent work, the definitive reading of "When The Sun Comes Out," a spirited "Gotta Move" which would find a place on her "Greatest Hits" lp and a re-cut for the soundtrack to her television special "Color Me Barbra," my favorite version of "My Coloring Book," Dusty Springfield also cut this song and it's a second favorite for me, a spirited "Lover, Come Back To Me" and the classic "I Stayed Too Long At The Fair" which deserved more attention than it received. This album dispels the "sophomore slump" myth. Like the lp before it, this 1963 lp was remastered and re-released in 1993.

- 1962 to 2009 Barbra is the Best

Barbra shows singers how to do it. She has always been far ahead and above anyone else.

- vintage streisand

This woman is one of the most talented and she needs to be heard. You may dislike her for her politics and all the media attention, but if you revist her past creative endeavors you will understand why she matters.

- It's BARBRA!

Her second Album is one of her best! But geeze Her name is is not spelled "BARBARA" She dropped the middle A, and it would be nice if iTunes would correct this mistake.

- Great album, but...

iTunes spelled her name wrong.

- The Best There Is

This album--like Barbra's first before it and third after it--is a master class. No one even comes close to her gift for phrasing, interpretation, and vocal style. These are standards, some of which had been recorded by many of her peers, and some that hadn't been recorded for decades. Her versions are consistently fresh, different and exciting. What can be added that hasn't already been acknowledged about this superb talent. She's the voice of a generation.
