Jerry Cantrell - Boggy Depot

About Boggy Depot by Jerry Cantrell Album

Boggy Depot is the debut solo album by Alice in Chains guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell. It was released on April 7, 1998 through Columbia Records. In 1996, after Alice in Chains opened for the first Kiss reunion show in Detroit, Jerry Cantrell began work on his first solo album. With the help of producer Toby Wright, whom he'd previously worked with in AIC, Cantrell worked on the album through 1997. Columbia originally gave a projected October '97 release date which had to be postponed greatly. Early net sources gave the tentative album title as "Bogey Depot."

- Great album.

If "Dirt" is one of your 10 favorite albums, you should buy this now. This album just gets better with age.

- Probably one of my favorite albums...

I'm a big Alice in Chains fans, so when I learned that Cantrell had a solo career, I lept at it. Cantrell, though he's no where near Layne when it comes to vocals, has a great voice, and the riffs are terrific. the best songs are definitely My Song and Cut You In, but Dickeye will always be one of my favorites. This is one of those albums I can't get tired of. Buy it; trust me.

- Great album

If you're a AIC fan....buy this now, if you're not, rethink your life and then by this. Jerry is a musical genius. 10/10

- This album would've been arguably the BEST AIC album!

These songs are all great and I know if Layne was singing them this would've been an INCREDIBLE album. Jerry is an awesome song/music writer and it is a very good solo album. I think he would've rather made it with Layne though. I just see a lot of potential for these songs. Still worth buying though.

- Something missing

Having been a big AIC fan since their earliest albums, I was hoping that Cantrell would be able to continue on without Staley. In many ways this album does seem like an AIC album, but a certain spark is missing. Cantrell did write most of the songs for AIC, but there's always something added (no matter how small) to the creative process from other band members that makes songs great. That something is missing in this album. Many of the songs drag on into a murkiness where they seem to get lost (the cover seems to represent this.) There's no catch to any song after the first three, and no real passion. Many of them are lacking any of the originality of form and production that AIC represented. Having seen Cantrell in concert for this album it was very hard to stay even partially interested in where he was going with the music. I'm afraid to say it, but the spark to Cantrell's compositions becoming great songs may have been in the totallity of AIC's members. Now that Staley is gone we may never see it again. That being said, this album does contain some obvious holdovers from AIC days that are worth keeping in your regular playlists, and the rest of the album is still mostly listenable, even if you find it better to use as a sleeping aid.

- Not Supposed to Be Alice in Chains :)

Jerry Cantrell is a true guitar god, and his solo albums prove it! To all who say its not quite AIC, blah blah blah...if it was meant to be AIC it would have been. They are called SOLO albums for a reason. Jerry digs deep into his soul for these masterpieces...they are raw and beautiful pieces of his psyche, served up on a platter for the listener to devour. Pretty deep huh? LOL For real this is an excellent album! also check out Degradation Trip, just as good if not better :)

- More Great Songs From Jerry

Jerry made a terrific album, any fan of AIC will love jerry's solo stuff. It would have been a bombshell to revive the grunge sceen if layne could have sang it, but sadily it wasn't ment to be. Jerry is an amazing song writter, and i hope to see more from him. Rest In Peace Layne

- Awesome

Great, real quick two best songs that anyone would love, Cut You In and My Song.

- Why give one of my favorite albums of all time less than 5 stars?

Musicianship, lyrics, etc. If I could take my heavy/hardcore roots and transcribe it into digestible folk, rock, country material, this album will always be my personal model for that. I love degradation trip... but further delving into this albums' genres/styles could have made Jerry into a household name easily. Boggy depot is, to this day, extremely underrated.

- Great Album!!!!!!!!!!!

My Favorites are My Song,Dickeye,Cut You In and I think the song Hurt A Long Time is one of the most underrated songs ever,it's so good.

- AIC light!

If someone from a band is going to do’s solo album, it shouldn’t sound like a light beer version of the real thing, and that’s what this is. JC is an extremely talented musician and writer but I think he should’ve come up with a more original sound.

- Great album

This is a great solo album! My favorite song is "my song". By the way. To the guy who said Jerry cantrell lost his friend at the time he was recording. This was released in 1998 layne died in 2002... Not sure what you're talking about.

- Something Unlike Alice In Chains

Now I know most big AIC fans have checked out this record and have mixed feelings about Jerry's style on this album, but after I heard the whole album, I was speechless. Every song is special in its own way, and there so many different styles of rythm, melody and harmonous catches which made this album one of my favorites of all time. Jerry is amazing musician and vocalist, with and without Layne(believe me, I miss Layne soooo much, he was the most versatile singer ever in rock music RIP Layne!!!!!!!) I cannot wait until Jerry and AIC come out with their latest record!!

- one of my favorites

the song Breaks My Back is my favorite on this album (reminds me of The Mars Volta,) then comes Jesus Hands. a bit different from Alice In Chains and it has some elements AIC doesnt use. a great album but i think Degradation Trip is better.

- Close enough

Jerry Cantrell is like the brain of Alice In Chains. Hes a great songwriter and guitarist, and does well on the solo album. But if your looking for the alice in chains effect, its not here. Layne was the heart of the band, and without him this album is like a glass half empty. You can have the brains but you still need the heart. It's unfair for him to be compared though, because hes excellent by himself.

- Alice in Chains Aftermath

If you love ALICE IN CHAINS, you have to have this album, Jerry Cantrell is an awesome songwriter, He wrote 80% of the alice in chains songs anyway. Both of his albums are awesome, from start to finish...............CHAINS FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Attention morons

Layne killed himself off so what was Jerry supposed to do? To compare this to AIC and bag on it because it is missing Layne is purely moronic. Get a life, and in the meantime, buy My Song, Dickeye, Cut You In, Cold Piece, and Hurt a Long Time. No its not AIC but it is like a long lost cousin.

- Yay for solo efforts...

I love both of Jerry's solo albums. This one came first and seemed a little stretched out, but it's still a great buy, and something that's in my playlist regularly. Dickeye - 101/10 Third favorite. Cut You In - 11/10 Best track on here. My Song - 10/10 Great listen. Settling Down - 9/10 Probably my least favorite track on here. Still awesome, though. Breaks My Back - 10/10 Underrated track. Sounds like he's singing underwater. Jesus Hands - 10/10 Heavy song with an awesome chorus. Devil By His Side - 10/10 Another highlight. Keep the Light On - 10/10 A personal fave. Satisfy - 10/10 Great track. Hurt a Long Time - 11/10 I LOVE this track. Between - 10/10 Cool country-ish tune. Cold Piece - 10/10 I love the feeling of this song...dunno why. 122/120 = Amazing. <3

- Great songs...

I think this is better than the self titled AIC album. It's a shame Jerry doesn't have more name recognition with fans. This would have sold much more if it had the AIC name on it. Some highlights for me are "Breaks My Back", and "Cut You In".

- Awesome

Love Jerry Cantrell and his work on both of his solo abums. Great stuff!! All tracks get 100000/10. All have great meanings to them

- Love it.

I have always been a big fan of Jerry Cantrell. Seen him in concert with Metallica. He is such an amazing musician. I like itunes too. Now I don't have to buy another boggy depot album. Before itunes (ipods in general) I would wear my CDs out. This is def. one of them I used to wear out.

- Boggy Depot

From what I've heard from this album, Cantrell did a good job on it. My favorite song of the album is My Song. I love this album and I hope I'll find it on CD because I'm making a CD collection and I have all the AiC albums and EPs including their MTV Unplugged. I even have Mad Season's Above album on CD which was a miracle that I found a month ago. And I think that Jerry Cantrell's solo albums would be good in my collection. And this year I'll hopefully get Alice in Chains' new album the day it comes out, and that'll make my collection look better.

- OF COURSE SOMTHING's missing! Layne staley DIED!!!

This is an amazing amazing maxing record just that fact that my song is a track on this makes it great it's as good as it can be KEEP IN MIND Jerry had just lost his best friend and bandmate!! His mental health was probably messed up which would be both good and bad as far as the quality of this record AIC will NEVER die long live grunge!

- Good, but not AIC

I've been an AIC fan since day 1 ... I like this record, but it just isn't the same.
