- The title alone rings true in so many instances

The title alone rings true in so many instances...the way this guy makes music...features with SZA...okay, bought!

- Brain booster

Thank you for this truly. The brain hasn’t felt this way since Fiona Apple’s last album and Jhene Aiko’s Chilumbo. Each song gem! James stays true to his spectacular artistry with superb features.

- so excited

PROTECT THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS

- Frozen- brilliant production and choral arrangements

Not my usual genre but the first time I heard this (KEXP), it grabbed me. All the messing with octaves… all of it just great.

- Amazing

He’s done it again dammit

- Great

My favorite British musician by far.

Blake also known as James Blake has an innate ability to fill the void of the airwaves with lyrics that cover a range of emotional baggage, here he opts for a panacea album that hopefully explains his thoughts and ideas on the roads that lead to the ends of friendships and relationships. ‘Friends That Break Your Heart’ is just that, here Blake exercises that fierce experimental electronic sadness with a layered nostalgia but the album shifts to newer or previously less explored genres and themes. That beautiful falsetto vocal of his hasn’t lost any charm or diction; the nervousness-sincerity and vulnerability play a big part in Blake’ music and here he carries on his approach with a methodical detail to production, that meanders those deafening silences between songs with pulp and bursts of synth-dubstep like tones layering lyrics with a warm embrace. Songs like “Frozen” bring an element of spookiness with autotuning with the more deeper and grounded vocals from featured artists of SwaVay and JID, while “Foot Forwards” has this rhythmic beat to it with simpler sounds – this is also shown in “I’m So Blessed You’re Mine” as songs of more nuanced pace. Of course a lot of artists have used the pandemic, lockdown and isolation as an almost inspired renaissance to create music and explore avenues and roads less travelled. Blake has used the last two years to also discuss how he dealt with relationships distant and physically distant - “Lost Angel Nights” and “Life is Not The Same” cover ground of a long distance relationship that already seems to have been conceded. Despair and hopelessness the James Blake way – gently elaborated but divinely reiterated. The album in itself is not a repeat as the above statements might make it appear; a larger part is the huge change in his success from his own consideration of being insignificant to fully international. The experience gained from his earlier albums to the latter apply here; where he uses the album as a coping mechanism to describe his new life. The growth of the individual from writing lyrics in a small bedroom to living in the United States and writing lyrics for Beyoncé. Blake offers up his take with a soundscape of complexity to reflect on the common issues we have all had in some form in the last two years; but it’s relatable to not just to one’ success but to also loss.

- Nowt new here

Pretty average stuff - easy to switch off and look for something better

- Same old same old

Everything he does sounds just like the last. Same delivery, same tempo, samey production…. It’s all become a bit of a yawn…..

- Dont know what the fuss is about

Didnt like the album

- Incredible album

I don’t usually write reviews but I have to say this album is phenomenal. Here he embraces his vulnerability and is trying to make sense of his world. It’s another beautiful album from James Blake. I agree with him, it’s his best yet.
