This is an excellent concept album that I listen to quite often. It's haunting and with excellent vocals and musicians picking and fiddling their brains out. In my opinion, this album rates near the top of Sturgill's offerings. Well done.

Sturgill Simpson has conquered a range of mountain tops on his trek through the musical landscape. This latest album, the Ballad of Dood & Juanita, promises to tell a story through music as this artist continues to frustrate all attempts to pigeon hole his musical genre to any single style or form. I first encountered Sturgill in 2014 at a Friday night live gig at Nashville’s Station Inn. About four bars into the first song & you knew this show was going to be way above average. The relatively short career of Sturgill Simpson has continued to exceed expectations.

Really great album, story, and concept by Sturgill. Really cool to see a modern musician bringing back vintage story telling music.

This is a masterpiece in the same vein as Red Headed Stranger and Dust Bowl Ballads. Simpson is the best country artist making music today.

An old Western movie if it was a Sturgill Simpson album. Love the sounds and the simplistic storyline. There’s also added depth and meaning since it’s an ode to his Grandfather and Grandmother. Sturgill is one of a kind.

Music doesn’t need to be a competition, but if it is, Sturg takes 1st place. Best storytelling album in some time.

Bout that time

You did it, you really did it!!! Storytelling in modern music isn’t great, but this album is definitely the exception to the rule. Very few artists, if any, could do such an excellent job of creating a story like this. The accessibility of this album is definitely multi- generational too. My 73 year old Dad can’t stop listening to this. He called me the other day and sang Jaunitaaaaa….as loud as he could into the phone and hung up on me. He hasn’t listened to anything new since probably the mid 90’s yet he loves this album.

Today is officially the day that Sturgill has handed the baton to Tyler. What an incredible waste of the greatest voice in real country music. I understand artists wanting to be artists and not wanting to do the same thing but to release the first two incredible albums and then to release an album completely dedicated to his son minus a couple songs, which I understand because it’s a life-changing moment but these last 4 albums…I don’t know who I’m listening to anymore and this is another one that will not get more than two rotations, for me. He’s been my favorite artist since 2013 but I can’t keep him on the thrown after this. Side project, bluegrass re-release and then a concept album. One is fine, 2 is enough but 4 is a sign that he’s either got nothing left in the tank or he’s about to get lapped. What a waste of the should have been country GOAT 🐐

Great new album from Sturgill Simpson. He set out to tell a story and he did it beautifully. Sturgill is a modern day cowboy, and having Willie on “Juanita” just makes me yearn for a full album from them. After “Cuttin’ Grass- Vol 1” released in 2020, I didn’t know when another album was coming, but I would be ready. “Shamrock” has “Daniel Boone” vibes and does this Kentuckian proud. Astounding new album!

I’m not even a diehard country music fan especially with where country has been heading for awhile but I caught wind of this one and Dag-gone! Absolute masterpiece! Great album Sturgill!

Best Sturgill Album

I love this so much. Love music I can feel and he nailed this.

This album is one of if not Sturgill’s best album to date. Each song is great in its own right but when put together they create something that is truly a delight to listen too. This album has a great mix of bluegrass, and western influences with flares of Latin American music. It’s totally worth the 10 bucks.

This is the best Sturgill album since, well forever. Beautifully crafted bluegrass music and true storytelling. This is a phenomenal album!

I dig the way Sturgill reinvents himself each album. I can’t wait for his Techno music to drop (kidding). Listening to The Ballad of Dood & Juanita gave me a feeling of watching some old Disney live action movie like Davy Crockett or Old Yeller. I doubt I’d rank this as one of Sturgill’s best work but its better than any other new music out right now.

What cant this man do? His range is amazing and this album is just what I needed.

Good to hear some real country music outside of the basic generic country coming out today. It all sounds the same! Just listen to I-heart if you can stand it.
