Brandi Carlile - In These Silent Days

About In These Silent Days by Brandi Carlile Album

"In These Silent Days" is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, released via Low Country Sound/Elektra Records on October 1, 2021. The lead single "Right on Time" garnered Carlile three Grammy Award nominations in 2022, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The album earned Carlile seven more Grammy nominations in 2023, including Album of the Year and Best Americana Album (winning the latter), while the single "You and Me on the Rock" earned three nominations, including Record of the Year, and "Broken Horses" earned two nominations: Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song (winning both). “I always want to engage the listener in a question instead of an answer,” Brandi Carlile tells Apple Music in a conversation about the album and its provocative title. “That's why it's In These Silent Days. It's a question: What did you learn? What did you make of yourself? What did you lose? What happened to you in this time? I want to invite people to reflect, because it's such a pivotal time in human history, and a real spiritual upheaval for so many people in really positive and really negative, complicated ways.” Carlile herself was in a deeply retrospective—and stationary—place when she started working on her seventh album. After the resounding success of 2018’s By the Way, I Forgive You (which earned her three Grammys), the folk-rock singer-songwriter and her collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth (affectionately known as “the twins”) spent much of the two years following its release on the road, pausing only to record the 2019 debut record from The Highwomen, Carlile’s country supergroup with Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby, and for Carlile to co-produce While I’m Livin’, the comeback album for outlaw country queen Tanya Tucker. The pandemic forced a slowdown in 2020, and that’s when Carlile started writing—the songs that would eventually wind up on In These Silent Days, but also her memoir, Broken Horses. “Writing that book gave me this really linear understanding of ‘here's how I started and here's how I am, and these are the things in between that made it so,’ and it was such clarity,” she says. “This was the first time that I knew what I was writing the songs about while I was writing them. I had so much more to pull from, so much more sensory material, than this abstract half-truth.” In These Silent Days meets the standard Carlile has set for her own songwriting: Piano-laden power ballads abound, from the sweeping grandeur of album opener “Right on Time” to the Elton John-channelling “Letter to the Past” through to “Sinners, Saints and Fools”, which gives any rock opera climax a run for its money. Fingerpickin’ folk anthems (“Mama Werewolf”), acoustic meditations (“When You’re Wrong”) and straightforward rock (“Broken Horses”) round out the album and recall the intimacy and intensity that have come to define her live shows. It’s both a companion piece to her memoir and a separate musical autobiography: This is how Carlile spent her silent days, and she wouldn’t have had it any other way. “I realised how much affirmation I get from strangers—that life-affirming response that you get from an audience when you perform,” she says of her new perspective gleaned from this transformative time. “If everybody could just have a job where they just go to scream and stomp all the time, I think they would probably find themselves a little more well-rounded.”

- Amazing!

- Brandi never ceases to amaze

Everything this woman touches turns to gold and this album is no different. Beautiful powerhouse.

Awesome

- My favorite

It’s perfection.

- Powerful!

Beautiful. Another out of the park effort by Brandi Carlile Band. 👏🏻Bravo.

- Transcending Genres

What an album! From Right on Time to Throwing Good After Bad and the eight songs in between this is a phenomenal work of art. This album transcends genres from its rock opera ballads, Americana, folk vibes often rolled into one song. The three part harmonies of This Time Tomorrow are angelic. Mixed in are the Joni-esque You and Me on the Rock… Elton-style tingling piano by Shooter on Sinners Saints and Fools… Broken Horses where screaming in tune is warranted. Letter to the Past will stop you in your tracks… Mama Werewolf, When Your Wrong, and Stay Gentle have a tone all their own. Rollercoaster of an album where you should trust the producers sequencing and listen beginning to end. The best yet for Brandi and the Twins… and that speaks volumes as all their albums are phenomenal.

- AMAZING!

It is been playing on repeat all day! Beautiful, breath taking, and pure magic!

- ATTN-PLEASE READ

In a vast sea of sonic diarrhea and cheap thrills for the unthinking masses this album stands out as an island. Can’t recommend it enough. Complex lyrical topics and emotionally rich melodic imagery, again not for your average bozo. Lovely piece of art IMHO. Thanks for reading-

- Broken Horses is the finest American rock of 2021.

I’ve bought 50-60 albums this year—nothing rises to the spectacular Broken Horses. Watch her brilliant SNL performance. And google the lyrics to see how the very best write today. I’m sorry I’m late discovering her work…

- BIG GIRL YEAH THATS ME

I really like it

- Another home run for this superb band

I’m a longtime fan, been riding since ‘06….and we’ve got yet another brilliant record from this band .. I love that they are exploring their musicality, refining it..and stretching it! Stretching their music out..to 4-5 minute songs. That’s what we need, longer songs, more musicality..and more Twinnies!

- Ten great tracks!

I’ve been a Brandi Carlile fan since the mid-2000s, and it has been such a pleasure to watch this band grow and evolve. The collaboration between Brandi Carlile, Phil Hanseroth and Tim Hanseroth as co-writers and band mates is some magical alchemy that few artists can match. I am honored that I have been able to witness their star rise, and as the spotlight has grown brighter, they have continued to raise the bar on their artistry. In These Silent Days is an incredible exploration of musical styles and influences from classic rock, glam pop, roots music, and vintage Seattle grunge/punk, all spun together into the sound that only BCB can make. The range of sounds and styles in this collection are bound together by a confidence and maturity that only comes as artists find their footing in the world. I know that some people will disagree with my statement that there are no skips and all ten tracks are winners, and that’s fine. I’ve been listening to this constantly since it dropped, and some songs have taken me a bit longer to warm to than others. Not every track is a singalong song, and depending on your genre preferences, you will find some easier to love than others. That said, I said what I said and I’ll stand by it. Every single track has something in it that shows you a slice of humanity, makes you think about a lyric, or hits your heart in a way that will break you open if you let it. The ones you have to listen to over and over again, that are harder for you to love, are probably the songs you need most to hear.

- Love it

I’ve been a fan since 2009 and every album has more nuance and emotional openness than the last. While it has a different vibe than past albums, it’s beautiful and so Brandi and the Twins in every way. I enjoy being along for the ride as she grows as a musician, mother, partner, and human. Well done Brandi ❤️

- Love this!

My first purchase of her music, after listening to her perform on SNL I checked out this latest…. Really love her voice!

- Amazing!!!

Love it❤️

- Amazing As Always

Brandi Carlile is a goddess. That voice! This album, as usual, amazing.

- Ugh

Chi

- Album of the year!

Brandi’s best album yet.

- Not her best

I’ve been a big fan of Brandi for several years. Was really looking forward to this album, as her previous 2 have been excellent. Unfortunately, this effort disappoints. Other than Right in Time and Broken Horses, the rest of the songs could have been filler on any of her records. Very little energy in the writing her compared to her best songs. Maybe stretched too thin? In any case, let’s hope the next record gets back to demanding attention rather than take-it-or-leave-it background music.

- Layers upon Layers of Genius

This highly anticipated album hits on all cylinders! From the first song to the last and every one in between, the depth of the lyrics and the raw emotion of the instrumental, blend into an other worldly experience.

- Incredible

I had high expectations and Brandi surpassed them!

- She’s great

Love her.

- Perfection!

During these lonely difficult times at least I could listen to her new album. Sweet perfection Just think if people got vaccinated, each day could feel like her voice. Hope for that day

- Beautiful

A joy to play and listen to. Thanks

- Beautiful

Beautiful music, beautiful voice, beautiful stories, beautiful feelings. Just beautiful!

- AMAZING BRANDI

Brandi has never put out a bad album, and this one might be one of her best. I never thought I’d like any album as much as The Firewatchers Daughter or By the way, I forgive you, but this one is definitely a top contender. Her songs are so real and raw and her lyricism is unmatched. Love her so much!!!

- Amazing!

Amazing!

- Fan-of-the-Band

Need more stars to rate this Masterpiece! Bravo BCB!

- Perfection

She’s perfect. This new album is amazing. There really just isn’t more to say. Buy it.

- Just Ok

Brandi Carlisle has some amazing vocals and they are good songs, just not great. This album just doesn’t draw me in like the first album did. Just doesn’t have some of the raw imagery the first album had. Seems like the music is more of what she wants to Vs maintaining what brought her listeners in the first place.

- Thank you Brandi!

Brandi's voice gives me chills. This is a beautiful album. She and the twins have created magic.

- Brilliant

Best album yet Brandi Carlile!! Stay gentle…

- Strong showing

I like all the songs, but You and me on the rock is just a fantastic love note to her wife that makes me love her even more. Awesome.

- Love this new album

Brandi Carlile (and band) have outdone themselves once again. The sound on this album is amazing. Read her book for more behind the meaning of these lyrics. Her voice gets better and better every year!

- Every song is a gem.

Every song a is a gem. They’re all stuck in my head at some point during the day. Honestly not sure which is my favorite. She and all the musicians on this album are national treasures.

- Absolutely stunning

Brandi and the twins never disappoint. This album is incredible. It will be in my playlist for the rest of my life.

- Right on Time

Entire album is amazing. Thanks BCB for the new incredible music.

- In These Silent Days

Another absolute treasure from Brandi, Tim & Phil. Best album of the entire year!!!

- THE BEST ALBUM ON EARTH

This is the best album I have ever listened to. I love every single song. I have been following Brandi since I first listened to “The Story” on Grey’s Anatomy Soundtrack 3. This was before I knew enough about her to know she was a lesbian. I had “The Story” albumn on repeat in my car daily. I was blasting it on the way to take my NCLEX, after the CD carried me through the last part of nursing school. I made a copy of the album for my mom because I thought she would like her. I listened to hee music as a mom. I met my wife at her concert at the Bomb Factory. I planned to propose at the Gorge on 2020…but COVID. We made it to the Gorge already married this past August. Brandi is a phenomenal artist. I feel her music in my soul. This album is revolutionary.

- I could listen to her all day.

She’s got an amazing sound! I could listen to her all day.

- The best

I’m still enthralled with this album four months after first hearing it. Brandi touches my souls, moves me like no other artist. I love this music.

- Just simply Wonderful

We needed this record. What a lyrical genius it is.

- Album of the Year

This band keeps getting better and better with every album! Knocked this one out of the park for sure. Loving the depths to the sounds and Brandi’s voice. The whole album has been on repeat nonstop!!

- A Golden Legacy

Brandi Carlile has seemingly mastered the ability to turn everything she’s involved with into pure gold. This album is likely to earn Carlile many additional awards and accolades, with the most important being a true legacy. The vocals, arrangement and lyrics will cement ‘In These Silent Days’ as one of the rare albums that 40 years from now, people will reflect on and share how it has forever changed them.

- Best album yet!

I’m a diehard Brandi Carlile fan who has loved everything this incredible group of musicians releases. That being said THIS ALBUM IS ABSOLUTE FIRE! What an incredible joy it is to watch the world take notice 💜🤘🏼🔥👏🏻

- Vunee

That’s Gn Pls. Yea I j I’ll rAga. Idiot ap. J A I’m o boy bdeee enough b

- Amazing!! Don’t miss out.

🔥🔥🔥

- wow

i was really looking forward to this album but i didn’t expect to be punched in the gut by mama werewolf this morning. i’m a mom now and came from a dysfunctional family and have this struggle. thanks for making it a little less lonely.

- In These Silent Days

Once again, she delivers a record that feels familiar yet brand new with her signature wordplay and interesting chord progressions. “Right on Time” kicks it off, it’s obviously the hit of the album and for a good reason. The definite highlight is “Broken Horses,” the best song on the album. The deep cuts on the album, while weaker then the cuts on previous records, still have that signature feel. “This Time Tomorrow” and “Sinners, Saints and Fools” are not to be missed though. Very good album, and a welcome follow up to “By the Way, I Forgive You.”
