Jack Harlow)", and "THATS WHAT I WANT", the first and third of which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 while the latter reached the top 10. The album has been mostly described as a pop rap record by critics. Primarily rooted in hip-hop and pop, the hook-dominated album incorporates trap beats and distorted hard rock, and draws elements from 2000s R&B and stadium ballads. It features guest appearances from Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion, and Miley Cyrus. Upon release, MONTERO received acclaim from music critics, who often commended its bold and heartfelt subject matter, and the eclectic production. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from professional publications, the album received an average score of 85 based on 19 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". At the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, the album and its singles received a total of four nominations, including Album of the Year, Nas' second consecutive nomination in the category. The singer performed "DEAD RIGHT NOW" at the ceremony.

Nas X is up to date as a human being and freedom isn’t as prominent in your life. Let people exist. The future keeps coming and the past gets farther away. You’re gonna have to live with it. He’s a person not an object or a product stop with that today. Let a person live as their true self. Let this man live the life he wants to and needs to live GD.

- An unbiased, honest review

I’m not a huge fan of the rap/hip-hop genre, but Lil Nas X has completely changed my opinion with this album. I see most of the bad reviews are not only dishonest but shallow in their criticism if it even gives any. People are saying he’s using his sexuality to sell the album so they’re rating it low and yet, they rate STRAIGHT artists’ albums high for using THEIR sexuality? Unfounded. Not only is Montero a hit for a reason but the rest of these songs are amazing as well. No dip in quality, all songs are a bop. I’ve been looking for an open LGBTQ+ artist I can listen to that represents my own values and understands my struggles, not like most rap artists. The songs never go on for too long, each is the exact length it needs to be to get its message across. For the people who don’t like sexual music then that’s easy, don’t listen to it. For the people upset that he made Old Town Road and it just so happened to get popular with kids, 1) it wasn’t marketed or for kids in the first place. And 2) even if it was, did you expect him to keep singing Baby Shark esque songs for the rest of his career? Montero was NEVER marketed for kids, so stop acting like this man owes your children content because he doesn’t and never did in the first place.
