- gustatory, pulchritudinous art

Exposed to the Broadway version only late into my 20's and having listened to this stereo London version so much growing up that its every facet is woven into the fabric of my being, I remain to this day shocked at both the number and pomposity of the Broadway version's fans who prefer its window into the vulnerabilities of the actors over the characters themselves as developed and embodied by those actors here for an engaged, rather than prim or delicate, live theater audience. There's more vitality brought from 3-dimensional reality here in one little _pause_ than the Broadway version's entirety, and anyone who can't immediately grasp—and _appreciate_—that is divorced therefrom. Julie Andrews herself has stated it's her preferred version: there you have it. Stellar sound quality brings out details barely detectable in my well-worn childhood cassette. I of course can now savor subtleties across a broader gamut, such as the mirthfully obtuse Ascot Gavotte (far funnier with these genuine British performers, to anyone with an ear for those accents (I myself being British, in small part), particularly the nasal squark lent the "a" in "absolutely" by the sopranos), and even Rex Harrison's brusque bluster, while still as grating and harrowingly harsh as ever, now renders intelligible consternation, wit, cynicism, and vulnerability, with an arresting force of emotional coherence despite having but injected his modicum of musicality into his withering tirades, elevating oratory to a lyrical degree rarely achieved, if only frail audiences would quit hiding behind the petticoats of polite "Singing": Higgins was an irascible, deplorably egocentric hurricane, well cast as and dazzlingly played by Harrison; get over it. Beauty to Higgins/Harrison's beast of course was the lovely Julie Andrews and her vivacious voice, here rendered with admirable fidelity considering the day's state of the art, particularly the signature number I Could Have Danced All Night: the airiness in her vibrato fairly jumps out from her tone, giving a startling immediacy, one wholly obliterated on my humble cassette of yore. Her cockney is far from authentic, but it is at least serviceable and delivered here with spirited panache, in stark contrast to her cringing reticence on the Broadway recording. Her scintillating defiance in Show Me and Without You threw down a formidable gauntlet of invigorating sexual liberation. Dame Julie Andrews' glorious singing voice and stupendous musical performing presence are well missed. We can only lament Jack Warner's unwillingness to cast an as-yet unproven film star (impact upon her subsequent Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music notwithstanding). Aficionados may consider the 2 behind-the-scenes tracks available a la carte from the remastered Broadway release here on iTunes.

- Julie Andrews Rocks!

Julie Andrews is an awesome singer. This album is great! Personally, i think that she shouldn't have been passed over for the role. Oh well, at least she won an Oscar against it when she did Mary Poppins. =]

- The Definitive Version

I own three recordings of this show, and this is by far the best one. It has Julie Andrews, who sounds better than in her Broadway version. Rex Harrison and Stanley Holloway sound much more comfortable and sing a lot more. The British accents sound very natural, and the sound quality is excellent. Although the Broadway and movie versions are still really good, this is the best.

- Improved!

My Fair Lady has to be like the greatest thing ever! I love it. I wish Julie Andrews had been put in the movie though, even though I love Audrey Hepburn too. I think in some of the songs such as Wouldn't It Be Loverly, Julie Andrews actually improved over the Broadway recording of the song. I think she knew the character more in this recording because the other was done so early on. You should buy Wouldn't It Be Loverly and I Could've Danced All night-definitely the best songs.
