Owl City - Coco Moon

About Coco Moon by Owl City Album

Coco Moon is the seventh studio album by American electronica project Owl City. It was released independently via Sky Harbor on March 24, 2023 in digital download, LP, CD and cassette formats. The album was written and produced by Adam Young. The album is supported by three singles: "Kelly Time", "Adam, Check Please" and "Vitamin Sea". Young announced the title and release date of the album via social media on February 9, 2023. The album contains themes of "autobiographical", "metaphorical", and "odd" songs, according to Young, that refrain from pop culture or political references. Speaking about the overall meaning of the album, he stated; "The point is that Coco Moon is a very Owl City album. It is quirky. It is odd. It is unapologetically myself. I made an album that is exactly the way it was supposed to be, not an album that popular culture or algorithms, or analytics, or anyone else on planet Earth told me to make. I wrote me." "Kelly Time" was released on January 6, 2023, as the lead single from the album. The song was inspired by the 2000 film Cast Away and is about "being okay with not always knowing what's gonna happen", as Young says. The album's second single "Adam, Check Please" was released on February 3, 2023, which is about Young's first job when he was 16 years old. "Vitamin Sea" was released as the third and final single from the album on March 3, 2023. Young premiered a music video for the song on March 13, 2023. In support of the album, Young announced the To the Moon Tour that will begin in fall 2023 with support from Augustana. The album contains 11 tracks, all written and produced by Young. He shared the cover art and track listing via social media on March 14, 2023. Young explained the meaning for some of the tracks from the album in an interview with PM Studio, including the singles and other cuts like "The Tornado". "Dinosaur Park" is the longest song Owl City has ever recorded, at 6 and a half minutes, and has been described as a "more innocent" and "patient" song toning down on its electropop sound. "The Tornado" features a brief screamo breakdown which Young has dabbled at in previous side projects such as Aquarium and Novel. Coco Moon was met with generally mixed to positive reviews from music critics. Ryan Reichard of PopCrush stated that the album contains some "surprising sonic moments." Joel Zaloum of Jesus Freak Hideout gave a positive review stating, "there's something all the more weighty at hand." He compared the album to Young's Scores series for its recognizable sound, patented guitar and synth tones. He described the third track "Kelly Time" as "Young's willingness to keep it simple, writing about everyday pleasures such as nostalgic movies." Other songs such as "Vitamin Sea" and "Learn How to Surf" were described as "carefree, radio-friendly tracks." "Sons of Thunder" and "The Meadow Lark" were described as the highlight and stand out points of the album. However, he did criticize the first track "Adam, Check Please" as a "seemingly mundane note." Overall, he remarked, "There's a beautiful balance between the outlandish and the practical, which should please fans of both camps. Young's addition of deeper spiritual themes, as well as movie-score tendencies, make this, perhaps, his finest work." In another positive review by Matt Collar of AllMusic, he called the track "Adam, Check Please", a song that was "born out of his own midwestern Christian upbringing." He also described the song "Field Notes" as a track that feels "more like fables or a tale by Mark Twain." However he was critical on the track "Vitamin Sea" for its lack of "subtext" and how it is "likely to elicit a few groans." He ended off stating, "A cynic might at first think he is being ironic or messing with the listener. But no, while there is clearly cheeky humor at play throughout Coco Moon, Young, as with a lot of us, really just likes sand between his toes." "The Tornado" has gone on to become a fan-favorite from the album, many praising the song for its "unique production" and Young's "unexpected vocal performance." toning down on its electropop sound.

- Coco Moon

Coco Moon by Owl City (Adam Young) is his best album yet! His song writing and vocals have got even better on this Album. His vocal ability on song, 'The Tornado' really surprised me in a good way. Field Notes is my favorite song lyrically, it is so good. He does music like no one else. I highly recommend listening to this album.

- Adam keeps exploring new territory

This album is a perfect followup to the masterpiece that was Cinematic. As I listened to each song I kept thinking "it can't get better than this", but I was proven wrong time and time again. Adam has really figured out how to use music and instrumentation to complement his lyrics, with The Tornado being the ultimate example of this. That song brought tears to my eyes, which is no easy task. The perfect combination of the Owl City we know and love, and the new territory he is venturing into, makes this album a true adventure, as it feels like Adam takes each song into a different, unexpected, and beautiful direction, so that it almost feels like each song is a different genre from the last. I'm so excited to listen to this album on repeat for the next month, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes us from here! I do think it's important to recognize the small issues with the lyrics of Adam, Check Please and Vitamin Sea, the first of which is maybe a little too favorable towards capitalist exploitation, while the latter promotes the vacation industry that has done so much harm to the people of Hawaii, but I do feel that the beauty of the music still makes it worth it, and it definitely doesn't change my five star rating.

- Fantastic again

I just love it so much. Thank you Adam for making this year a happy year.

- Love it!

I absolutely love this album! Adam’s ability to tell stories set to amazing music makes him a modern day bard to me. I absolutely love that he’s stayed true to himself and never sold out. His unique sound always uplifts my soul. The way he can make me “hear” stars, ocean surf, tornado winds, and circus atmosphere, while playing with my imagination and sweeping me into meadows, dinosaur parks, deep waters, parables, faith, and overall what really matters in life, is nothing short of amazing. Thank you Adam Young!

- Amazing job, good sir!

You know what? This album is pretty amazing. Not a classic like "Ocean Eyes" or "All Things Bright and Beautiful", but I wasn't exspecting it to. And I don't think that's the poiint. It's just... Owl City, and there is nothing wrong with that. It's just great to hear Adam Young grow as an artist. The songs are simple, but effective. The orcastrated pieces are really a great touch because he wrote scores in the past. It's a really nice "easter egg" for us Adam Young fans. Now what I really admire is that he's not afraid to show his faith as a Christain. As a fellow Christian, I find that comforting and it brings a smile to my face. Preach on, my brother, preach on! and the last song... made me cry (a little). So in conclusion, it's a album worth purchasing. I listen to it TWICE while I was work. Always finding somthing new the caught my ear. Amazing job, good sir!

- Magical world!

This album is otherworldly, unique and a breath of fresh air.

- Pure Adam

I love the way he just does him in his music. This record just shows that and I love it. Such a meaningful and creative album!!

- Format is Better

It’s good to have this format back. I wasn’t impressed by his previous efforts. He lost me with those. This is more like his original efforts. Sweet and playful tunes. Nicely polished as well.

- A Beautiful Evolution

Owl City has never been afraid to try new things musically, which is a respectable trait, whether you’ve been a fan of the styles it’s explored over the past decade or not. After the heavier pop approach of The Midsummer Station in 2012, the niche experiment of Mobile Orchestra in 2015, and the realism of Cinematic in 2018, Coco Moon feels like a sort of “return to form” with the classical imaginative lyrics and dreamy (and sometimes intense) signature synths that were always present in Owl City’s earliest albums. However, there is plenty of influence present from the styles and techniques that have been explored over the past 10 years. It’s as if 2000s Owl City and 2010s Owl City had a baby. On top of it all, while the lyrics tend to still have an imaginative, image-creating drive to them that Owl City is most known for, they hold a sense of more deliberate purpose and realism through 1st-person, metaphorical storytelling. Love it!

- AMAZING!!!!

LOVE THIS ALBUM SOOOO MUCH!!!!

- Unbelievable

It is really hard to just listen to one song on this album. If it pops up on a playlist you’ll end up just playing the whole album. It’s that good!!! We’re ready for October Adam! Thank you for this music!

- Nice blend of old and new Owl City

The Tornado takes home the Grammy. Fantastic song, and the album as a whole is a delight. Glad to have you back Adam!

- Stellar!

Coco Moon filled with so many touching reminders that I feel I always need to hear. 🎶 Whether it’s about the first job, watching a breathtaking show, appreciating the gift of life, reminders of faith, finding inspiration in serendipitous moments, visiting captivating places, appreciating loved ones, or taking a vacation— this album is a treasure trove. ✨ I especially love ‘The Tornado’— a reminder to “keep hanging on because it’s always darkest before the dawn” and that “with all the stormy weather in the world, you learn to take life one storm at a time”. 🌪️ Another lyric that resonates with me is from ‘Field Notes’: “There are a couple of things more precious than gold—one is your heart and the other's your soul, and you got something unique that nobody can steal”. 🌾 Life’s tough, and “you can't stop the waves, but you can learn how to surf”. 🏄🏻‍♂️ The future’s uncertain, but “the sun will rise tomorrow, and who knows what the tide could bring.” 🌊 Adam, thank you for writing this music. Every song on this album speaks to me on a deep level. You have my most sincere admiration and respect. 🥹

- Wow, just wow!!

I’ve been waiting for Owl City to return for so many years. And this was not the return I was expecting. It was so much better! All the songs are very lengthy, but are so entertaining. One thing you can’t say about this album is repetitiveness, amazing job keeping it alive throughout every song! I love Adam’s form of poetry in this album. Especially “The Meadow Lark.” I was literally in tears because of that song! It was just amazing!! I give a big thumbs up for this album. Definitely getting your moneys worth buying it!

- Brilliant!

Amazing work of art! Favorite songs: “Field Notes”, “Sons of Thunder”, “Dinosaur Park”, & “The Meadow Lark”. Amazing content, lots of references to the parables of Jesus. Adam’s music tickles my brain and my soul at the same time. Listen to this while mediating on God’s Word. Love this album!

- Original :)

It’s quirky and interesting. Very Owl City. I think it’s a hybrid of some of the whimsical older Owl City music with the story telling of his last record. I’m excited to listen to it more.

- So Good

I love the Adam’s creativity…I enjoy all the epic synth shredding…The Tornado is so good!

- Great songwriting and catchy beats!

A wonderful album to usher in spring and summer!

- Unbelievable

This album has such a beautiful blend of old and new Owl City and I could not be happier. So glad Adam is making the music that he wants to make!

- Best album of the year!

Awesome album with long songs and is very unique

- Happy to see another album, but…

About half of this album sounded a little too familiar to me. I’m not hoping for another ‘Ocean Eyes’ album, but with a five year break I expected something with a little more oomph. I’m still rooting for you, Adam.

- Meaningful

The music has taken such a turn toward storytelling, another masterpiece to the collection.

- Owl City is BACK!!! 😄

Adam Young of Owl City released his new album today: Coco Moon. I have loved his music ever since first hearing it way back in 7th grade. During the years following, whenever asked about my favorite band my answer these past 17 years has quite consistently been: Owl City. Funny enough, I actually haven't truly loved an album of theirs since 2011's "All Things Bright and Beautiful", so my answer always harkened back to my earliest memories with the band and how the music made me feel in a way like nothing else. That's why after all this time I am SO PLEASED to say that my initial impressions of Coco Moon are terrific and I am well on my way to truly loving this one! With this album, Adam is unapologetically his quirky, God-loving, and fantastical self and there are plenty of classic 2009 OG Owl City beats that get me feeling nostalgic. It's like I'm becoming an Owl City fan all over again! If you haven't given the album a try, I'd suggest plunging right on in with me! 😄💙🦉

- Yessss

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

- It’s alright

There’s definitely some good material on here. Better than Cinematic for sure. But better than ATBAB or Ocean Eyes? Not a chance. The lyrics are very literal in some songs, and I miss his more surreal and metaphorical style of writing. The Tornado was a major highlight, Kelly Time, Vitamin Sea, Under The Circus Lights, and Learn How to Surf were genuine highlights on here as well. It’s a step in the right direction for sure!

- Coco Moon 😎

Owl City is so good! Love this album! Looking forward to jamming out to it this spring and summer! Great Job Adam Young! Keep it up! 😎 👍🏻

- Love it

While I was a fan back in the Maybe I'm Dreaming era, I've seen Adam grow a lot. I do miss the old esoteric and dreamy lyrics he used to produce, but I still love this new album! Sons of Thunder has a lot of power behind it which I like alot. Hope to see more come from Adam in the years to come, great album to comeback on <3

- Words Cannot Do This Justice

As a man who grew up with Adam Young's music, Owl City, Port Blue, Sky Sailing and so on, and even wrote the occasional lengthy review of them, this album brought tears to my eyes, and a remarkable, decade-long sense of deja vu. The lines this album crosses between imaginary, immersive, literal, and figurative, all at once, is indescribable. Any more words cannot do this justice. All I'll say is that this is beyond just an album - it's an experience: one which I would encourage anyone to have.

- What an amazing experience

I love every song on this album. It has some classic owl city sound as well as more modern feel. It’s clear Adam has had some significant improvement in mixing and orchestration over the years and this album showcases it perfectly. For those of faith, many songs on this album will be an absolute treat!

- Yeah!

Best artist. Best album

- Fantastic as always!

Dinosaur Park is now one of my top favorite songs!

- AMAZING ALBUM

i absolutely love owl city’s music, and this is another amazing addition to his musical portfolio ✨

- Absolutely stunning

This album is sonic gold. I have it playing almost constantly while I go about my day. Working, drawing, driving, whatever. It’s on. It is a masterpiece in every conceivable way and no one can convince me otherwise.

- Great!

Loving this new album from my favourite artist! The Tornado and My Muse are my top picks from this album. So much creativity in all these tracks.

- The Absolute Best Album You’ll Ever Listen To

This album is packed with bangers from top to bottom. From the upbeat, happy songs like, Vitamin Sea and Learn How to Surf to the riveting, emotion evoking stories in songs like The Tornado, all of them touched my heart in a way that I can’t explain. I can’t believe that this album is finally out, thank you so much!!!
