Barbra Streisand - The Movie Album

About The Movie Album by Barbra Streisand Album

The idea of Barbra Streisand making an album of movie songs is a no-brainer; as annotators Jay Landers and Richard Jay-Alexander point out, she has already recorded over 50 songs written for motion pictures on her 59 previous albums. In fact, the only real challenge may be a marketing one for Columbia Records, since potential customers simply may assume this is a compilation of some of her previous performances. It is not. Rather, it is a newly recorded collection of songs chosen and arranged in Streisand's inimitable style. In keeping with the movie theme, she has thought big, using a 75-piece orchestra of the kind usually only found on a studio back-lot for a soundtrack. But all that firepower is used for support, not for its own sake. The key word here is "lush," not lavish. Streisand's immediately identifiable voice floats over the music, never challenged by it, so she is able to achieve her usual close-up, detailed performance, alternately intimate and expansive. At 61, she retains remarkable purity and range in her voice, though she is less interested in demanding effects. This is a smooth, conversational vocal album. Streisand's song collection is characteristic of her. As usual, she isn't much interested in the Great American Songbook of the interwar period. Only two songs, 1935's "I'm in the Mood for Love" and 1936's "Smile," date from before her birth, with most songs coming from the '50s and '60s. And, as usual, the songs as written sometimes don't satisfy her, so she has prevailed on the composers to change them. Johnny Mandel willingly wrote a new verse to her specifications for "Emily," and Bob Telson did the same for the obscure "Calling You" from Bagdad Café. Streisand's age is reflected in her choices, too. She frequently goes for lyrics about mature love such as "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" and "The Second Time Around," and she sounds more convincing singing them, giving the words more emphasis than she does, for instance, when she just tosses off the line "You're life itself!" in "Wild Is the Wind." As she herself notes, "You're Gonna Hear from Me," which closes the album, is reminiscent of the assertive songs she sang in her youth, such as "Don't Rain on My Parade," and that makes it all the more notable that she sings it in such a mellow way, as a fond memory rather than an upstart declaration. It makes a fitting closer. If The Movie Album is not the sort of revelation that Streisand's 1985 masterpiece, The Broadway Album, was, it nevertheless gives the listener some superior new takes on standards the singer has not addressed previously and uncovers a gem or two that had been overlooked till now. - Teaching Other Singers Too Sing!

The perfect voice album of Barbra's brilliant career. Some songs are obscure, and the fans may have wanted other, but listen to the voice; it has never sounded as pure as pleasent as here. This artist, is an artist's artist; a singer's singer; and I am freaking lucky to have seen her show twice. Both times MAGICAL.

- My least favorite album of her career.

As a devoted fan for thirty-plus years, with almost every album/CD of hers in my possession, I caution everyone to avoid this monotonous mess. From the cover art which is a recycled photo, to her lackluster phrasing and disappointing vocals, this effort can be described as something few Streisand works can: Passionless. The entire album is a dreary dirge. Except for the last selection, "Your Gonna Hear From Me", which wants desperately to be a lively, full-of-moxie type of number along the lines of "Don't Rain On My Parade". It is just sad, as her attempts to hit the big notes escape her. Her more recent efforts such as "Guilty Pleasures" and "The Concert" are great though, and far more worthy of your time. Skip this one at all costs.

- Exquisite

This album is like a bottle of fine wine. Smooth, soothing and entrancing. Beautiful selection of songs. Sit back and enjoy your glass of wine.

- DO NOT listen to the other review!

This is a lush, memorable, beautiful album full of songs that are perfect for Babs's voice. Barbra singing "Moon River"? Come on, it doesn't get any better. The way she sings it makes it sound like it was written for her. And to start off the album with "Smile" will tug at your heartstrings and move you deeply if you have any human heart at all. This is a fitting and long-awaited follow-up to "The Broadway Album," and this diva puts her spin on every song, showing how much she loves movies and movie songs. I still listen to this album regularly after nearly 5 years.

- The Boring and Dull Movie Album.

Yawn.... Scoobydooby doo's review is right on target. I was so looking forward to Barbra doing Moon River - she kills it. Every song sounds the same. There is no variety whatsoever.Only the final track is noteworthy. Bland otherwise.

- Classy take on some of the most beloved movie songs

I love this album. One of the most relaxing albums ever released by Ms. Streisand. I can get lost in the harshlessness of her voice while swimming in the delight of some of the best songs from movies of the by-gone era.

- Calling you!!!!

i like celiene dions version of calling you better ....but u cant get it on itunes

- The Plans Go On.....

Barbra was heading into the twilight of her career, or some had thought, when she released this album of movie songs. As for formula, this is a typical Barbra album filled with lush ballads and standards, but this is not delivered in Barbra fashion as far as vocals go. Barbra as the years have gone became more emotional in her readings, not to say she doesn't deliver each song with surgical precision. Her voice sounds a bit younger but her delivery isn't powerhouse, indeed not one song on this set finds Barbra in full voice. She sings softly, carefully, with her throat voice almost giving this album a "cooing" quality and with the lush strings, a romantic mood. Barbra's ability to turn dross comes through on "Calling You," a song I find annoying performed by anyone, here it's actually listenable but music overall is a matter of personal taste.
