Bob Dylan - Desire

About Desire by Bob Dylan Album

Desire is singer-songwriter Bob Dylan's 17th studio album, released by Columbia Records in 1976. It is one of Dylan's most collaborative efforts, featuring the same caravan of musicians from the acclaimed Rolling Thunder Revue tours the previous year (later documented on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5). Most of the album was co-written by Jacques Levy, and is composed of lengthy story-songs, two of which quickly generated controversy: the over 11-minute long "Joey", which is seen as glorifying the violent gangster Joey Gallo, and "Hurricane", the opening track that tells a passionate account of the murder case against boxer Rubin Carter, whom the song asserts was framed. Carter was later released - but not exonerated - on appeal more than twenty years later. A well-received follow-up to Blood on the Tracks, Desire reached #1 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart for 5 weeks, becoming one of Dylan's top-selling studio albums (currently certified double platinum), while reaching #3 in the UK.

- Sara

I will always be the 1st Stockton player to put a bob Dylan song in prospective this song Sara is arguably the best song on the album and the song of our Stockton 3rd basegirl Sara Handy

- Some good tracks

I never really got into the album on the whole, but track #1 makes the whole CD worth taking a listen to.

- cleopatra's mom?

I've heard isis is the name of cleopatra's mother..not sure, but what a great song! there's a classic video out there called the rolling thunder revue..dylan at his craziest, and best. also, romance in durango is a great song, but find a live version to hear him truly rock it. love countrified dylan, and this album is among the best in his catalog..there's a rare album called dylan (not the new one) that has covers of sara jane, and lily of the west that's a must have if you like this album...and who doesn't?

- The Inner Dylan

By most experts opinion, it was in this era when Dylan opened up and let some of his personal life resonate within his music. I feel I must agree with this statement. Although this album contains just as wondrous lyrics, the topics about which Dylan sings seem more like a memoir than a "protest" song, as his past works are claimed to be. Sara, for example, is about his divorce with his then wife Sara Lowndes. Isis, One More Cup of Coffee, and Romance in Durango are all also about past loves, although not as direct as Sara is. Although I have rambled for most of this review, I will sum it up now. Every song on here is amazing. This is Dylan at his finest. yet again.

- Hurricane!

Hurricane changed my life, this is a great album, if not just for that, Isis and Mozambique are good also. I think Dylan should consider preforming Hurricane again.

- Oh gosh

The first Dylan album I have ever heard. Couldn't believe what I was hearing. Actual songwriting at its highest form. Listening to a Dylan song is like going to the movies. "Joey"

- What Happened?

Desire and Blood on the Tracks were some of the most haunting and inspirational music ever. From the depth of his lyric, to the violins, to the words. I just wanted more of this...More albums in this same style...

- Desire

This is a great album. I love Isis, but what about Sara? That song is great!

- Emmylou Harris, anyone?

I can't believe no one has mentioned Emmylou's backup vocals on this album. She's one of the greatest supporting vocalists ever, not to mention an amazing artist on her own. See Graham Parsons' work for more of Ms. Harris in the background. One of my favorite voices of all time!

- A low 4 Dylan-stars.

Having only been exposed to this album in the last five years, I would say that half of it has aged well, and half has not. Some of the songs/production are/is "hard" on the ear, some are sweet. It's not a really positive album, there's protest, ego, and tragedy, but one or two songs can warm the room. This is a next-step Dylan album.

- ❤️

❤️

- The Hurricane! (1st review ever)

Perhaps my favorite Dylan song. Granted, I haven't heard majority of his portfolio, but it is truly amazing storytelling! I'm not even a big fan of boxing, yet the sound, feel, and message in this song is both heart-wrenching and beautiful. Ultimately...sad story--look it up. As for the album, it is very good. Worth the ten bucks if you're even a "sort-of" Dylan fan.

- I AM SPEECHLESS

THIS IS ONE OF MY 82 FAVORITE BOB DYLAN ALBUMS. REMEMBER, "HOT CHILI PEPPERS IN THE BLISTERING SUN..."

- lesser known classic

This album is excellent a MUST BUY for a deeper cut into the music of Bob Dylan. Hurricane is riviting, Isis (who is an Egyptian god that looks like a cat) is just wow, and Joey is a great ballad!

- His Best?

I own every Dylan album, and this one might be his best, if it's possible to pick one. Hurricane and Isis are brilliant, and I never knew why Black Diamond Bay wasn't on any 'Best of' or Box set, it's one of his most under-appreciated songs.

- Chy

Dylans sound transforms into a more western theme and I love it!

- really good

Desire is an album that showcases Dylan's vocals considering what people may think. Hurricane deserves it's recognition and Isis as well. Not his greatest but really good.

- Bob Dylan's Best Album

I have every album Bob Dylan has ever come out with and "Desire" is my favorite. Every track on the album is incredible, from his masterpiece "Hurricane" to much less well-known songs like "Joey", this album is perfect.

- A haunting, timeless classic!!

This may be my favorite Dylan album to date---I was only 9 when this album was released, but largely due to my uncles (who were into the groovy, sometimes controversial, always a pleasure-- sixties/early seventies tunes) I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time listening to Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Velvet Underground, John Lennon, CSN & Young, Hendrix, The Doors, Jeff. Airplane... even the Flying Burrito Brothers :D) Bob Dylan has always intrigued me with his lyrics, and this album has had the biggest impact--with songs like "One More Cup of Coffee"**, "Isis" and "Hurricane"...actually, ALL of the songs on this album are symbolic of the times-then and NOW. That's what's so cool about Bob Dylan; his music is timeless! The lyrics are incredibly thought provoking; the musical arrangements will charm and capture you! If you aren't a Bob Dylan fan, start with this one and you'll be hooked, and if you ARE a Dylan fan, welcome, brethren....buy this, and enjoy!!!! I've had this for a few years now and haven't tired of it at all! **Jack White is the only other artist who I consider comes close when it comes to Dylan's rendition of One More Cup of Coffee" Not trying to advertise another artist...but he's worth checking out, too. He's also covered "Isis" and did well with it...Bobby D performed with him in 2003 on "Ball & Bisquit"...an incredible compliment!

- Dylan is amaizing

I have always loved Bob Dylan since i took a class in high school. He is the best songwriter ever in my opinion. You neer get tired of his music!

- Its Variety is its Strongest Point

What about Scarlet Rivera? Her violin and her voice interpaly beautifully with Dylan's guitar and voice. What an underappreciated artist (I'm talking about Scarlet). She has been compared to such notables as Jean-Luc Ponty, Papa John Creach, and David LaFlamme. This is a damn strong album and even someone turned off by Dylan's nasal voice would appreciate it.

- Not too many albums out there with songs about Joey Gallo and Ruben Carter out there!

Outstanding

- The last true Dylan record EVER

This is the last Bob Dylan record. After this he would just lose interest and release bad albums. Until his renaissance in the 2000's and late 90's. But even those albums aren't as good as this.

- His best album in my opinion

I’ve heard Bob Dylan since I was about five years old my dad’s played all his records all the songs. For some reason I like this one the best. I do understand this one is probably the biggest produced one.

- Another Masterpiece

Another Masterpiece from a TRUE Genius. I have been collecting Bobbies music for years.... One of the truly gifted artists of ALL TIME. Like the Beatles his MUSIC is timeless

- All Time Favorite

Sara is easily the best harmonica solo ever. Besides Sara everything else is still perfect.

- underated

underated.

- Joey and Brooklyn mob

A lyrical masterpiece. Too bad that you must buy whole album, although "Isis" and "Black Diamond Bay" are strong. Also "Sara" an accompaniment to "Sad eyed lady of the lowlands". After reviewing songs, go ahead and get the album.

- a must have for any dylan fan

a must have for a dylan fan and for a music lover of almost any type. Not as great as Blood on the Tracks, but a close second....a great collection of songs...from Hurricane to Sara...and Joey and Isis and on an on....purely a magical abum. for one couldnt care less about it being all over the map and not "protesty" enuff...it is simply good songs.

- NO OTHER DYLAN RECORD QUITE LIKE IT...and....SARA

This is one of Dylan's most interesting records. Can't remember who the players are (besides Scarlet Rivera and Emmylou Harris), but along with the engineers, they're a big part of why this record sounds and feels so unique. The drummer in particular was perfectly cast for this particular group of songs. While Isis, Mozambique, and Black Diamond Bay are all magnificent, Sara is one of the most personal and beautiful ballads Dylan ever wrote. Joey is overly long, but after all these years i still remember this verse: "What time is it" said the judge to Joey when they met "Five to ten" said Joey The Judge said "that's exactly what you get!"

- Dylan at his 70's best

Enough said...

- The Poet Lord Has Passion

You Know that Movie Hurricane is just a another potato chip movie. The song is an epic that is time specific and bruised by Hollywood. If you skip the first song the rest of album is a poetic story from the desert of the heart that can be compaired to the writings of TS Eliot. Dark, personal and thoughtful, Dylan is reborn.

- 'Desire' should be a desire of any Bob Dylan fan.

Hurricane is a song with a great message, poetic and historic, but also, the music is fast paced and unique of other songs. One More Cup of Coffee is definitely classic among these songs. Joey, an 11 min long song is a lovely piece and duet. The voices blend together quite well.

- Desire

I loved Hurricane, it is such an awesome story, and I can see now where Bruce Springsteen gets his storytelling lyrics skills from! Right Here From Bob Dylan!

- One of the finest.

This album is indeed one of Dylan's finest, most musically intricate outings and the tour videos out there are legendary, but I'd like to bring attention to Dylan's writing partner on the album; Jacques Levy. Jacques Levy was a lyricist with whom Dylan collaborated to write the bulk of the songs on the album. Levy's songs include but are not exclusive to Isis, Hurricane and Oh! Sister. If you like the poetry and lyrical aspect of the album, check out more of Levy's work with Roger McGuinn and The Byrds.

- the best

well this might be my favorite dylan record. i think it has one of the most underappreciated songs ever "one more cup of coffee". all the songs on this record are amazing.

- Love this album

Bob sounds so good with Emmylou.

- Pricing Error

A great album. But why would you buy the entire thing for $9.99 when you can buy all the songs individually for a total of $8.91? Just thought that was funny.

- imprinted

i first encountered Desire back in high school (the 90s) after, of all things, hearing Hurricane in the movie Dazed & Confused. it was my first real Dylan experience, and though it isn't his finest, it's still my favorite. the songs on this album are different than on any other Dylan album; while most Dylan songs create a kind of musical vignette lyrically and visually, the songs on Desire seem, to me, more cohesive lyrically than any other album he's put out. i remember feeling like he was taking me on a tour around the world when i first listened to it. 15 years later, that hasn't changed a bit. i agree with the reviewer below who wonders why Black Diamond Bay isn't more popular. holy holy! this is one of the top five albums that imprinted on me as a kid, and it's totally under-appreciated.

- Desire

There are a few missteps that prevent this album from ranking among dylan's finest, but the highlights of the album make it a treasure for all of those who are fortunate enough to stumble upon it. I can't say that I know a single person who would ever agree with me, but I would argue that "Black Diamond Bay" is the best song on here.

Desire Wiki

Desires are states of mind that are expressed by terms like "wanting", "wishing", "longing" or "craving". A great variety of features is commonly associated with desires. They are seen as propositional attitudes towards conceivable states of affairs. They aim to change the world by representing how the world should be, unlike beliefs, which aim to represent how the world actually is. Desires are closely related to agency: they motivate the agent to realize them. For this to be possible, a desire has to be combined with a belief about which action would realize it. Desires present their objects in a favorable light, as something that appears to be good. Their fulfillment is normally experienced as pleasurable in contrast to the negative experience of failing to do so. Conscious desires are usually accompanied by some form of emotional response. While many researchers roughly agree on these general features, there is significant disagreement about how to define desires, i.e. which of these features are essential and which ones are merely accidental. Action-based theories define desires as structures that incline us toward actions. Pleasure-based theories focus on the tendency of desires to cause pleasure when fulfilled. Value-based theories identify desires with attitudes toward values, like judging or having an appearance that something is good. Desires can be grouped into various types according to a few basic distinctions. Intrinsic desires concern what the subject wants for its own sake while instrumental desires are about what the subject wants for the sake of something else. Occurrent desires are either conscious or otherwise causally active, in contrast to standing desires, which exist somewhere in the back of one's mind. Propositional desires are directed at possible states of affairs while object-desires are directly about objects. Various authors distinguish between higher desires associated with spiritual or religious goals and lower desires, which are concerned with bodily or sensory pleasures. Desires play a role in many different fields. There is disagreement whether desires should be understood as practical reasons or whether we can have practical reasons without having a desire to follow them. According to fitting-attitude theories of value, an object is valuable if it is fitting to desire this object or if we ought to desire it. Desire-satisfaction theories of well-being state that a person's well-being is determined by whether that person's desires are satisfied. Marketing and advertising companies have used psychological research on how desire is stimulated to find more effective ways to induce consumers into buying a given product or service. Techniques include creating a sense of lack in the viewer or associating the product with desirable attributes. Desire plays a key role in art. The theme of desire is at the core of romance novels, which often create drama by showing cases where human desire is impeded by social conventions, class, or cultural barriers. Melodrama films use plots that appeal to the heightened emotions of the audience by showing "crises of human emotion, failed romance or friendship", in which desire is thwarted or unrequited.
