If you are after a modern recording you should probably look elsewhere. This was recorded in 1958. Sound quality and performance standards have moved on since then!
This is an exclellent version of the Messiah. I would highly reccomend this to any body. This is perfect for Chrismas.
This is the best recording of The Messiah I have heard!
Very well recorded
Handel's Messiah is one of the best works of music, but the overall produs=ction of this record wasnt great. The sound quality stank, and none of the instruments or singers were all that impressive. If you want a copy of Messiah, try Academy of Saint Martins-in-the-fields, or the London Symphony, but at $7.99 for this, you cant beat it.
This is a must-have for anyone, and not just because it's absolutely the best deal on iTunes. I had never heard the complete orchestration before and it's simply wonderful! Download and enjoy! :)
I had a CD of the "Best of Handel's Messiah" (like one could really choose the "best of" with a piece of this caliber!) Before I decided to plop $45+ on the complete CD I decided to check what it was going for on iTunes. To my surprise it was only $3.99?! I thought there was a mistake so I downloaded it because it's only 4 bucks if here was some mistake. I am very happy to say this is the real thing in its entirety! Recorded by the London Philharmonic, one of the best orchestras in the world, the performance is top notch and inspiring. Handel actually wrote this oratorio while he was living in London, so I feel that this interpretation remains true to Handel’s vision. My only quip is the recording quality is a little hissy... barely noticeable on louder movements, but it is there in the quieter ones... however that one minus point does not detract from the overall value (aka. steal) of this piece. get your copy of this Christmas classic today!
Let me just say I have considered writing reviews before, but I couldn't resist this time when I saw this album was only 8 dollars. I puchased it around a year ago and forgot it was so inexpensive, especially considering the number of times I have listened to it. I have heard many versions of the most notable songs on the album, such as the Overture, Hallelujah, and I know that my redeemer liveth and I have yet to hear a better recording. Truly the best 8 dollars you will ever spend.
Not sure what that other person was listening to, but it obviously wasn't this...This is AWESOME, choir and all! I only wish I would have had this a few weeks ago. Our tiny church choir, which I am a member of, is singing a few of the pieces and it would have been nice to have this to practice with. Oh well, I'm going to download it anyway...there are still two more weeks of choral music from this that we have to sing. Not to mention it's a wonderful symphony to listen to this time of year.
it is an amazing piece and sound of music, handel was a genius, this is real music!
This is a Christmas must have for getting into the mood of the holidays!! The price is unbelievable!! Two thumbs way up!
I don't understand how it is that the price is so low, but even if it were closer to twenty, it would still be worth it. Buy the entire Orchestration, and listen to it the way it was meant to be heard...Excellent buy!! *Edit* for the person who made the statement that there was no choir...he obviously did not buy or even sample the album. There is a choir!! So there are no excuses! Buy it!
One work says it all about this piece of music! This is Handel's Messiah the way it is supposed to be heard. The orchestra is great, and the chior and soloists are too. And for $3.99??? I thought it was a mistake, because there are other compilations of the Messiah that are more epxensive. Stay away from those. This the one that you must have. One more thing, stay away from the "highlights" from the Messiah albums. They leave out some great music. For $3.99, there is no excuse not to have this album. BUY IT!!!!
Plan an evening in front of a warm fire. Re-familiarize yourself with the subject matter (possibly read Luke chapter 2 and Isaiah 9 and 53 from any Bible) Then, sit back and enjoy the history, passion and hope of this amazing story. The London Philharmonic performs the very best Hanel's Messiah in my opinion. This is a special value. Worth many times the price. Enjoy.
This is a wonderful album with gorgeous voices and beautiful orchestrations.
I would agree for the price it's hard to beat, but the quality of the recording is not as good as the one by St. Martins of the Field.
I listen to this a lot and have come to cherish Handel as a result. The music and recording is top notch, the singing is superb and Handel's music proves to me there is a God.
I love the messiah, but I found myself yawning when listening to this version. Its banal interpretation and plodding pace rob it of much of the fire, urgency, and joy that I love so much. I would recommend spending a few extra dollar to purchase Christopher Hogwood's version.
I must mention that compared to other Messiah performances, this one leaves a lot to be desired. While the Philharmonic does wonderfully, the vocal part is simply underwhelming. The choral texture is rather muted, and while the soloists are acceptable, the tenor is simply something that should not have happened: His voice and interpretation have "Milquetoast" written all over. Overall an unexciting rendition. Susskind's conducting is old-fashioned, which in itself is not a bad thing as it is quite faithful to the earlier conceptions of Baroque performances, but the vocal instruments under his conduction are simply not up to par to deliver a satisfactory performance.
Beautiful. One of the best renditions of the Messiah I've had the privilege to hear. I try to catch a performance every year here in NY, and now I can listen to it anytime and feel like I'm in the concert hall. The majesty and passion are all here. Just wonderfully done.
This is a rather tired version of Handel’s oratorio performed by a fully employed London Philharmonic Orchestra. This is definitely NOT a version for lovers of the early music movement. The recording is peculiar because the balance is such that you may think you are actually sitting inside the harpsichord, the only period instrument to be found here among the 101 welling violins. This recording should be purchased if only to remind us how greatly musical tastes have changed in the past 20 years. A better bet would be to spend the extra cash for Christopher Hogwood’s, 1991 pioneering recording with the beautiful Carolyn Watkinson, soprano and a proportioned orchestra with period instruments. Better yet, why not spring for “Hogwood Conducts Handel’s Oratorios” and discover some additional music you may find just as moving and lovely!
