Bruce Springsteen - The Rising

About The Rising by Bruce Springsteen Album

The Rising is the 12th studio album by Bruce Springsteen, released in 2002. In addition to being Springsteen's first studio album in seven years, it was also his first with the E Street Band in 18 years. It is centered around Springsteen's reflections on the September 11, 2001 attacks. Upon its release, The Rising was a critical and commercial success, and hailed as the triumphant return of "The Boss". It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of over 520,000 copies. With this, Springsteen became the oldest person to achieve a first-week sales of over a half of a million in the U.S. The album also garnered a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2003; although nominated for, and widely favored to take, the Album of the Year award as well, it was bested by Norah Jones' debut album Come Away with Me. Title song "The Rising" was also a Grammy nominee and recipient. For the year 2002, The Rising was one of only two albums to receive Rolling Stone's highest rating—five stars—the other being Beck's Sea Change. While most of the songs were written after September 11, 2001, a few of them pre-date the attacks. "My City of Ruins" was originally performed in, and written about, Asbury Park, New Jersey. After its performance by Springsteen on the post-September 11 America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon, however, the song took on an expanded meaning. "Further On (Up the Road)" was performed live in Madison Square Garden during the summer of 2000 at the end of the Springsteen-E Street Reunion Tour, and was professionally recorded, although it was not included in the HBO, DVD, or CD versions of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band: Live in New York City. "Waitin' on a Sunny Day" was originally written in the early- or mid-1990s and played in at least one soundcheck during the Reunion Tour, and Springsteen has commented that "Nothing Man" was originally completed in 1994 but re-recorded for this album. Helped by a substantial marketing campaign — pre-release promotion was the biggest of Springsteen's career — and the concurrent Rising Tour, The Rising went on to become Springsteen's first #1 album on the U.S. pop albums chart since his 1995 Greatest Hits album and would go on to sell about 2,100,000 copies in the United States, making it Springsteen's best-selling album of new material since 1987's Tunnel of Love. Initial critical response to The Rising was very positive. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has received an average score of 82, based on 21 reviews.

- great, Great album

With The Rising, Bruce captured the emotions of America After the 9/11 attacks, as the Title track tells us to Join together and rememeber the victims

- The LIVE album pretending to be a studio disk

This is probably one of the few albums ever written where the artist could tour on it year after year and the music would be better and better received. It is a remarkable, gut-wrenching, pure Springsteen collection of reality where every song just begs for a live audience. This is arguably his best ever so if you want to get to know Springsteen, you need three disk: The River, Thunder Road, and The Rising.

- Great album

One of the few albums that you like all the songs. Check it out even if you are not a fan of Springsteen.

- Strong

right up there with his best stuff

- Very good

I have never been a huge Bruce fan, although I appreciate his music. I must say, however, that this album is a classic, incredible from start to finish. Well done!

- "The Rising" is the spirit of 9/11

Every time I hear this album, it almost always brings me to tears. 'Into the FIre' just overwhelms me of the heroism of the fire fighters who are going up to the fire while everyone is going down. 'The Rising' is just powerful, and so many others. By far, it is up there with the greatest albums all-time.

- False

Not a true patriot

- Work of a musical and lyrical genius

This is simply brilliant work and evidence of Mr. Springsteen's genius. I have enjoyed his work over the years, but I do not own all of his albums and I would not describe myself as an uncritical fan. The lyrics of The Rising are poetic and moving without being maudlin, and the music is inventive. Together they reveal Mr. Springsteen's remarkable gifts of composition.

- Into the fire!

I'm more of a country guy but i must say, Springsteen is the best. "The Rising" is proof of that. Keep it up Boss! Songs to listen to: 1.Lonesome Day 2.Into The Fire 3.The Rising

- Amazing

This is an amzing album. I've been a Bruce fan frome the beginning and this is one of his best.

- One of the Greatest Albums of All Time

This is an astonishing record, deeply moving, hard-rocking at times, and introspective. On this tenth anniversary of 9/11, this is the music that I turn to help make sense of ten years of nightmares and despair. It may be Bruce's greatest achievement and certainly one of the best rock albums of all time.

- Rise Up!

One of my top favorite Springsteen albums ever. Every single song on the CD is great, and I would recommend buying it in its entirety. "Lonesome Day" is a great song, as are "The Rising", "Mary's Place", and "Empty Sky." This is a must for any Bruce fanatic (like me haha) and is well worth your money. It's Bruce's best recent CD, and a reflection of 9/11. Wonderful album.

- One of the Best

When this album first came out, i bought it. Each song has a speacial meaning and reloevance to 9/11. Even though each song has a sad meaning, they are almost all pretty upbeat. my favorite song is the rising. when this albmu first came out, i was so thankful to have not lost my uncle in this tragedy. this was the miracle in our family. years after, we are waiting to wake up and not think about the war that is going on just across the ocean. we are waitin on a sunny day. mary's place is telling the story of a party. as a teen, we all love parties to celebrate something big or nothing at all. maybe once the war is over, we can all go to mary's place and have a party. thank you to springsteen for coming out with such a meaningful album.

- :)

Everything is everything

- One of Bruces' Best Albums!

There is so much to say about how great this album is. All of Bruces' songs on this album are very lyrical and have their own distinct feature, which makes each song, a great song to listen to. I highly recommend this album to anyone looking for some good rock and roll music!

- Emotional

What else can I say. Still gets to me every time I listen.

- Trash

Definately not his finest work. It sounds far too much like he's borrowed from the grunge culture and added it to his own style. It doesn't work. The lyrics are very uninspiring and few. He just threw together some chords and a few lines then repeated everything until it made a song. There isn't a single tune that you can hummm while you are driving off to work. I think it's time for Bruce to retire or go back to the studio and rework his tunes here.

- Great Album!

Wow, most artists loose their touch with age but The Rising completley denies that statement. I was very shocked when I listened to this album because of the power and strength it had. The lyrics wer very moving and the instrumentals are on top! Great album to own by Springsteen!

- One of the best Bruce has ever put out on record.

I bought this album for a family member because, that person has all of bruce's records. I Listened to this cd, and man one of the best albums that i have ever heard. There are a lot of really good songs on this cd, Lonsome Day, Into the Fire, Waitn' On a Sunny Day, The Rising. But the One you really have listened to and get the lyrics to is Empty Sky (This song is good, It is a good remberance of that fatefull day 7 years ago. 9-11.) Empty Sky I Think is the best song on this cd, (It is a must, that you should get the lyrics for this song. It would blow you're mind). Bruce is a genious.

- The Boss Revived

Typical of any bruce album, every single song is a hit and for all those that think that the early boss was better its all great and this album by far has the most heart and soul in it then all the others when America wept from the pain of 9/11/01 Bruce was that one thing of joy that we could all hold on to

- One of my Fav CDs out there

For a really long time I disliked Bruce, but all of my friends really liked his music and forced me to listen to it over and over till i respected his talent. In my mind this CD is one of if not his best. There is not one song that i fail to love, and no one song sounds to much like or to different from the other songs so that the CD may be played by its self. A value many CDs lack in this age due to the "one song wonder" power of itunes. Besides the great flow of this CD it is also the first of his CD in 15 years to feature the E street band and i feel like the time spent apart which has led to a great reunion.

- Still in awe

This is an amazing album! Every song is amazing (which is a rarity nowadays) and the songs have a very deep meaning. This just might be his best album ever. It's up there with Who's Next, Joshua Tree, Synchronicity and every other album that is regarded as legendary.

- Even pricing?

Why is the most popular song (The Rising) $.30 more than the others?

- Caitlyn Jenner is better

An episode of the Kardashians is more pleasing to the ear

- The right album at the right time.

A fantastic album on every level. Captures the pain we all experienced on 9/11, but also offers a message of hope. This is a must have.

- His Best

The Boss came through when we needed something to help us deal with the shock of 911 like only he could. There is something about a his music that always finds the right words and riffs to touch our soul. You may not like his politics but you have to love his honest and pure love for our country and the people that make us who we are.

- Exhaustingly Beautiful

After releasing some mixed results in the 90's, Bruce stormed into 2002 reunited with his legendary backing band. The Rising proves to be the Boss's catchiest and most memorable effort since Born in the USA, from the stomping opener Lonesome Day to the quiet subtlety of Nothing Man to the rousing good-time party anthem Mary's Place. The E Street Band were tackling the topic of a post-9/11 world, so the overall feel of the album can be emotionally draining, probably the bleakest since Nebraska. Add to that an average track length of four plus minutes for fifteen songs and the exhaustion predictably increases. Bruce and company also try a wide range of musical styles, from the pop of Let's Be Friends to the world experimentation of Worlds Apart, and the results can vary wildly. On average there is bound to be at least one or two tracks you will dislike here, but the standouts and an underlying sense of hope shine from the overall gloom and give Springsteen and his fans his best post-80's album. Choice Tracks: Lonesome Day, Waitin' on a Sunny Day, Nothing Man, Mary's Place

- Great Album from a Great artist

Awesome "Further On (Up The Road)" is my favorite but every song 1 - 15 are great

- The Rising

This album is the best September 11th 2001 themed album. But I think the following songs should have been left off the album: Waitin' On a Sunny Day, Countin' On a Miracle, The Fuse, Mary's Place & You're Missing (tracks 3,5,10,11 & 12). The album would have been darker but I believe better without these tracks. The best song on the album is track 2 "Into the Fire", the perfect September 11th remembrance song.

- Exceptional

When I first listened to this after 911, I was deeply moved by the strong emotion and lyrics. Listening now in memory and honor of those lost and affected.

- The Rising

In my opinion this ranks a close third behind Born to Run out of all of Brcue's albums. Every song is great and The Rising, You're Missing and Nothing Man are three of my favorite songs by the Boss. MUST BUY.

- Album really hits home. Simply one of his best

I'm a big Springsteen fan. I love all his albums but with me being a fireman, this one hit home for me. If you don't already know, this entire album is about September 11th. The aftermath, the pain, sorrow, heartache, the victims, and most importantly, the rising from the ashes of the tragedy. The second song, I knew right from the second track entitled "Into the Fire" that it is about the FDNY firemen who died in the stairwells of the towers. Later in the album the track entitled "You're Missing" is a heart wrenching song about losing the one you love and nothing is the same after. However, it's not all sad. The song "Mary's Place" is one of my favorite on the album, with an uplifting beat and a positive feeling to it. It actually reminds me of his earlier stuff. The title track is also very positive and really gives you a feeling of hope. I can't see anyone else pulling off this album like Springsteen did. I guess that's why he's earned himself the nickname "The Boss"

- i've had this album for three years and i can't get enough of this

every single song on this album are about 9/11. My favorite is mary's place. i've had this cd for the longest time but i still like listening to it. bruce springsteen is amazing and he writes amazing songs.

- artfull storytelling

excellent from start to finish. no duds.

- Oh Yeah!

I think it is fair to say this may Bruce Springsteen's best album. And it is fair to say it is in the greatness of U2's Joshua Tree, Shawn Colvin's Steady On, and Billy Joel's Storm Front. Paradise and the Fuse are the best songs on here. But aren't they all? Oh Yeah!

- Why he's one of rock's greatest

When the country was reeling from 9/11, and the market was flooded with so many money-conscious pop & country stars cynically using this crisis to further their own careers, it took a legendary performer to put it all in perspective. As another reviewer stated, Mr. Springsteen takes this horrible tragedy and boils it down to its' essence - the effect on individuals. His brilliant use of metaphor is simply more powerful than anyone else in the history of rock, with the possible exception of Bob Dylan. It's a shame so many young people dismissed this album before they even heard it, assuming it fell into the blatant exploitation category. If you're interested in how a master works and feels, this album is essential.

- The Rising

Bruce SpringSteen major classic rock

- THE RISING IS THE BEST!!!!!

THE RISING IS THE BEAST

- Top 5 of the last Decade.

This is easily one of the best albums of the last decade. Every song is great and you can tell Bruce and the band put a lot of time into each one. Some songs are upbeat but some have a somewhat melancholic tone to them. This is because this album is a response to 9/11.All the tracks are great so buy it now and play it all the way through

- My City of Ruins

Was just listening to this disc again and its just such and important work. Will inevitably be connected with a certain place in time...an important place. As I was listening to Ruins, chills were just shooting up my back. Whole disc is amazing and touching but that song just gets to me.

- Bruce Springsteen Never Disapoints

Every song on this album is superb and despite not wanting to own everyone I woudl not mind owning them all either. Exceptionally well done!

- Incredibly Moving

It's hard to believe that tomorrow is the 8th "anniversary" of 9/11. It has been awhile since I've listened to this CD and I had forgotten just how moving it was. When I first bought it back in 2002 I listened to it every day for a month. The songs were so moving and Bruce felt the pain of all Americans in his haunting lyrics. I saw him in concert that year and when he opened with The Fuse, it sounded so powerful and moving. Hearing him play these songs live just brought out emotions in me that I hadn't felt before. Bruce is an amazing songwriter and he is an even more powerful performer. If you haven't listened to this CD in awhile, do yourself and favor and play it. We need to remember what Bruce was trying to convey with these songs and we also need to remember are fellow brothers and sisters that died on that fateful day.

- Bruce’s Best from the 90s on

I remember Rolling Stone’s review when this one came out. They had a full page picture of Bruce, standing strong, carrying a flag as if he were shouldering all of those fears and emotions we were all experiencing after 9/11. It’s a bit hokey, but listening to the album, with all of its big triumphant noise mixed with melancholy and pathos… you can see how true it felt at the time. At the time, and in many times before and since, I’m sure, we’ve all been simultaneously scared and hopeful, broken and triumphant, and this album absolutely nails that contradiction. My City of Ruin, Further On Up The Road, Lonesome Day, and The Rising all stand up as all time great Bruce tracks (even against his classic period in the 70s and early 80s). Simply a wonderful record.

- I was there

Completely encompasses my emotions of that day, week, the month, and the years following September 11th 2001.

- Absolutley Amazing

This albulm is full of truely great songs: Lonesome day: Nice beat. Best song on the albulm to open. Mixes many great tones into a pretty good song. Its alright Yeah! Into The Fire:Slows things down a bit...Not the best song on the albulm, defintaly not the worst. More inspirational than you would want Waintn' On A Sunny Day: In my opinion, Some of Bruce's best work. This song just makes you want to get up and dance. And the ending w/ the sax solo. I dig it Nothing Man:Not too good..Not too bad. Again, too inspirational. Way too slow. Probably the worst song on the cd Countin' On a Miracle: Great modern touch to a older artist's cd; good stuff, it will get ya playing air guitar Empty Sky: It would be amazing if Bruce didnt say empty sky every other word, still too slow Worlds Apart: Nice little indies touch. Not really what im lookin 4 Lets be friends: Great job workin in a chorus. What im looking 4 when i bought it Further On:Great rock n roll touch. One of the best songs on the albulm The fuse:OK just OK tries to mix in chorus like in Lets b Friends. Cant do that as well Marys Place: Really Superb. I wanna dance, air guitar, and run around my block a couple times from all the energy in this song Your Missin: Way to slow it down. and to kill an albulm. Lyrics make no sense, no beat, i wanna go to bed and sleep from all the -energy in this song The Rising: Just soo good. cant get enough of this song. And a great solo? Amazin Parasise:ok if your missin killed this albulm, the risin brought it back to life and this song killed it again. just too slow. i give credit, though for great lyrics my city of ruins: a good slow song, great way to end an albulm that is amung the best

- Classic

One of the best CD's that I can recall hearing when it came out (Im 20 years old). It's a very powerful, moving album and it was what Americans needed after 9/11. It has a very re-assuring, hopeful tone throughout the whole album. In my mind this album (along with a few of Bob Marley's albums) does the best job of delivering that "it's ok to hurt and have sorrow, but everything will be alright" type of message.

- Great!

This was a great album - nice to see iTunes bringing it back into the forefront with the 10th anniversary of 9/11. What a tribute. Bruce is a brilliant songwriter.

- Load of crap!

He is so over-rated!

- American Rock

This album is the perfect example of what Bruce Springsteen does so well- he captures the essence of American lifestyle, whether it is glory or strife. His blend of folksy and rock tunes with powerful lyrics paints a perfect picture of living in America. This album reminds me a lot of Born in the U.S.A., and the Rising is arguably his second best (behind Born in the U.S.A.).

- Shear genious

Shear brilliance, the way Bruce captures the utter despair post 9/11 with tracks like Lonesome Day, Empty Sky & Your Missing and yet offers hope with gems like Mary's Place, The Rising & Waiting On a Sunny Day, is song writing at its' finest. If you're a Bruce fan or just like good song writing and don't have this albumn, part with the hard earned and snap this one up. It's great to have the great man and the E street band together again.

- An album that's for listening to, not dancing to.

When i bought this album, before listening to it, i expected it to be dark in both lyrics and music. Lyricwise, it is dark since it is a reaction to 9/11. Musicwise, there are times where it is dark such, as in "The Fuse" and times when it's a bit lighter, such as in songs like "Waitin' On A Sunny Day". This an album not to dance to because it's its a tribute to the fallen and a reaction to a black day. This is an album to listen to in terms of lyrics, not the music.

- Teriffic Work.

This album is great. Lonesome Day is a good start to the album, Waitin' On a Sunny Day is great, and Further on Up the Road is just awesome. Buy it.
