Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

About Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan Album

Highway 61 Revisited is Bob Dylan's sixth studio album, released in 1965 by Columbia Records. It is Dylan's first album to be recorded entirely with a full rock band, after he experimented with the approach on half of Bringing It All Back Home. It is commonly tagged as documenting the "angry young man" period in Dylan's career, in-between the playfulness of its surrounding albums; many of the songs on Highway 61 are of an accusatory nature and feature rough, loud takes. Featuring hits and concert staples such as "Like a Rolling Stone", "Desolation Row", and "Ballad of a Thin Man", it is also generally considered to be among the artist's best and most influential efforts. Dylan himself commented, "I'm not gonna be able to make a record better than that one... Highway 61 is just too good. There's a lot of stuff on there that I would listen to." The album peaked at #3 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart and #4 in the UK, while "Like a Rolling Stone" reached #2 on the US Pop Singles chart and #4 in the UK, also receiving the accolade of being placed #1 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The album itself was ranked #4 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

- Not his best, but has a few classics in it

Almost Everyone knows Like a Rolling Stone, probably Bob's most famous, but besides that this is far from his best album. It does not have the genius of Blood on the Tracks far and away his best, but it has Ballad of a Thin Man and Desolation Row and of course Like a Rolling Stone. Those are the three best tracks and elevate this album above all his previous ones. This should probably be where you should start if you are just getting into Bob Dylan.

- #1

Simply put, the greatest album ever created by the most talented musician we will ever know. "Like A Rolling Stone" is one of the most incredible tracks you'll ever hear, but that's only one of 9 classics that this album contains. I've never been more entertained by an album as I have by this. When you tell people that a Bob Dylan "Greatest Hits" CD isn't doing him justice and they give you a look, just simply direct them towards this album. If they're not amazed and wanting to dive even further into Dylan's discography, then they clearly don't understand incredible songwriting when the hear it.

- Like a Rolling Stone

The best Dylan album, and surely one of the best in rock music history. The songs are truly innovative and powerful, and Dylan's voice is at its best. The musicians playing on this recording count among the best in the history of rock. The arrangements are fantastic. LIsten to the keyboards (Kooper) and the guitar (Bloomfield) in this jewel. I never shared the anger over Dylan going electric. It was a matter of musical evolution. That change brought us records such as Like a Rolling Stone and Blonde on Blonde! And there was time to return to magnificent folk music with the likes of John Wesley Harding.

- Very good... Not his best

Really, you can't go wrong with any early Dylan album (62-67). This is his first full rock effort after a hybrid sound with bringing it all back home (acoustic and rock, my personal fav Dylan album). Desloation row is classic. "like a rolling stone is timeless, however a bit over played.

- Greatness

Why do u have to ask

- Wow, just thank you.

This is a tour de force. I have never heard music that is so encompassing. Much of Dylan's audience is divided on what his best work is, but that's always a given with any artist of his magnitude. I used to wonder how so many people in the sixties hated this album, but not so much anymore. Bob Dylan was just so ridiculously ahead of his time. Like Martin Luther King Jr., The Beatles, and Apollo 11 this is a true landmark of the 20th century, and makes me so proud to be human.

- Classic

Greatest album ever made

- Essential to any and all music collections.

The best album ever you ask? No. It transcends the term "album", this as good as the Bible, hell, probably even better.

- It's True

This is the best album of all time.

- what's so great?

His voice is annoying to me. I can't even hear the good melody and lyrics of the rolling stone stone because of his screeching voice. I just don't like his singing.

- Buy it

What is there to say about this album that hasn't already been said? If you happen to be a member of the human species and possess a working pair of ears, then you have no excuse not to buy Highway 61 and listen to it... repeatedly. It will - at the very least - enrich your life historically as the indelible piece of Americana it is: a revolutionary and powerful collection of music that is both mordant and inviting at once. This album's gifts can be manifold if you explore the depth it beckons you towards. And I sincerely hope you do just that.

- One of the Greatest Albums of All-Time!

What an Amazing Album. I luv it. Though most of the praise I have has already been expressed for this album I'll just say I highly recomend it. The Boss Bruce Springsteen has described the opening of "Like A Rolling Stone" as "Somebody kicking the door open to your mind". How's that for a recomendation? Key Tracks: Like A Rolling Stone, Tombstone Blues,From A Buick 6, Queen Jane Approximately, Highway 61 Revisited, AND my 2 favorite tracks Ballad of a Thin Man and Desolation Row. But everyone's entitled to their own opinion so buy the whole thing cause everything about it's awesome! Peace.

- I live

two blocks from Highway 61 . . . . well, not quite 50 years . . . .

- Highway 61 Revisited

I originally purchased this album in 1965 or 1966 and it completely blew my mind ,and I just purchased it again in 2011. That is a testament to it's staying power. Along with the unfolding scene of San Francisco, pot, rock concerts and Vietnam it defined a generation. It's hard to believe that Dylan just turned 70! Another great Dylan album is Love and Theft.

- Tangled Up In You

i love dylan and unfortunately soon he'll be Knocking on Heaven's Door but at least he'll have John Lennon to show him how things work up there.

- Bob Dylan

He went right when he hired Mike Bloomfield for this album.

- Required listening

For me, this album is ground zero for modern rock n roll. Bob Dylan set the framework for everything that came after. Children should be required to listen to Dylan when they reach 14 or 15. He is the greatest artist of all time!!!!!!

- Wiered in the most delicious way

Bob Dylan is like great liquor, you either get it or you don't. Amazing lerics, great music complemented by an imprefect voice. Just don't try to understand everything you hear, just go with it. Don't be like Mr. Jones,

- How Does It Feel?

This is by fr one of the best albums of all time. Dylan has such a way with words its scary. Dont just buy Like a Rolling stone, its a classic but theres much more here.Tombstone Blues, Highway 61, Tom Thumbs Blues and Desolation Row(yea so your gonna have to buy the whole thing for this one.) are all classics.

- Mind Taunting

When I first heard 61 from start to finish I didn't know how to react. This is the ultimate collection of songs for absolute mind freaks. When you hear this ablum you either have one of two reactions: "what the hell is this?", or "this is awsome on the most absurd level". Mostly everyone is familiar with the infinite layered, Like a Rolling Stone. When it comes time for, Tombstone Blues, you will find yourself smiling while listening("the sun is not yellow/it's chicken). Ballad of a Thin Man, will have you thinking "oh my god". By the ending, Desolation Row, you know your ears and mind were just treated to something special. By Dylan's own admition, this is his best work.

- Pure talent...

Along with "Blonde on Blonde", this piece of art is the best thing that ever happened to history of popular music. So raw, poetically sharp, and just plain fantastic. The album may not flow perfectly together like Blonde on Blonde, but every song, even viewed separately, is a masterpiece in its own right. From "Like a Rolling Stone" to the epic 11 minute "Desolation Row" it's a musical journey like none other. Bob Dylan's music may be an acquired taste that some people may never learn to enjoy, but for those of us who can sit and let the songs speak for themselves, here is a perfect example of what defines great music.

- One of the Greatest

Bob Dylans Highway 61 Revisted is one of the best albums ever. The moment I heard Like A Rolling Stone I got this album. I can listen to it front to back anytime and never get tired of it. A must have for Rock and Folk fans.

- revisited

This is one of Bob Dylan's finest albums. It kicks off with "Like A rolling Stone" which is like a melting pot of folk, rock, blues, country, r&b, and poetry that gives t.s. elliot a run for his money. The song is fresh and cathartic and is definitly one of the best songs ever. It also sounds unlike anything that ever came out before it. It's that monuemental. Instrumentally, the album is just as good as the lyrics throughout. Tombstone Blues is gritty and surreal blues song. it takes a train is a wonderful ballad. ballad of a thin man is absolutely astounding. queen jane, and tom thumb are timeless old timey rockers, highway 61 is hilarious and absurd, and quite heavy. and of course desolation row is transcendental...

- The greatest Bob Dylan album ever!!!!

People who criticize this album has no sense what real folk/rock albums are. Yes you must buy it! Yes the whole thing! If not at least buy like a rolling stone. Other than that buy the whole album!

- The Roots

Without this music, we would have never gotten as far as we are today. This is the best Dylan album.

- Ripped off

I bought this album to get the song 'desolation row' because that song is only available if you buy the whole album. All the songs downloaded except that song. I paid ten bucks and still didn't get the song I wanted. I was totally scammed and ripped off by iTunes.

- best album of all time

the beatles or the rolling stones dont even come close dylan. his songwriting takes leaps and bounds from album to album, this being his best album, and the best album released in american history.it transcends genre, unlike any rock n' roll/pop music i've ever heard.

- Buddy...

This friggin' slaps

- Excellent

Brilliant album. One of the best ever made.

- favorite

This is one of my favorite 60's album in my whole collection. FREAKIN AWESOME

- Dylan forever!

Not much to be said - a true masterpiece!!!

- Highway 61 Revisited

Bob Dylan's greatest achievment is ,in my opinion, possibly the greatest album ever. Every track is perfection, but my favorite tracks are "Like a Rolling Stone", "Ballad of a Thin Man", and "Desolation Row". But buy the whole thing because you won't be dissapointed! In one word... POETIC

- Equal in brilliance to Hamlet, The Sistine Chapel, and Don Giovanni

This album is America, rough around the edges, not willing to fit neatly into any box. This album is the 60s, full of violence, protest, peace, love, and war. This album is a young man coming into maturity - finally surpassing Woody Guthrie, Rimbaud, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams Sr., realizing that he is among their ranks and humbled to be there. A little scared of his own brilliance. Not sure where to hide when he needs comfort, but knowing that the only true comfort is to be found in giving comfort to others. Especially when it's nine below zero and 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Never again quite so hard-edged or aggressive (save some fueled Rolling Thunder shows i.e. the live version of "Isis" on Biograph), Dylan looks down the cannon here and plants a bouquet of flowers. If Desolation Row doesn't move you, then I can't help you. The verse about the superhuman crew strapping the heart-attack machine across the shoulders of "those who know more than they do" convinced me to quit my day job. LOL this album is dangerous. It may free your mind and the rest will follow.

- my best!

bob dylan is always my best!i love him so much!he is my best singer!

- Needed

I think this is the closest that the latter half of the 20th century's "pop" music has come to art.

- EXCELLENT

Best Dylan Album To Date

- ❤️

❤️

- Perfect.

Best classic rock album ever? This and Blonde on Blonde remind me a little of the Beatles, except 20x better! Dylan invented such an original sound with this record...the organs, harmonica, his cool, not so-perfect voice, and everything else just works perfectly. So many times I've heard a Dylan song and thought it was the best song I've ever heard...this was the case with "Queen Jane". "Thin Man" has Dylan at his darkest and "Tombstone Blues" is on par with any Johnny Cash classic. Listen to this front to back and you will not be disappointed.

- Dylan's Masterpiece never gets old

Dylan's Magnum Opus. One of the greatest albums of all time by anyone. Along with Blonde on Blonde a must have

- Highway 61 Revisited: A

This is definitely the best Dylan album i've heard, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. This classic album definitely deserves Rolling Stone Magazine's title as the 4th best album of all time, only to be topped by Revolver, Pet Sounds, and Sgt. Pepper. I loathe anyone who gives this album less then 4 Stars. They probably are not Dylan lovers like myself and millions of others. Not to sound smug but a fan of Bob Dylan knows good music, unlike the Lady Gaga loving b.a.s.t.a.r.d.s who control pop music today. If all was well in the music world, Dylan would be topping the charts, and The Beatles would be alive and together. But Besides that... Here's a Track By Track Review: 1. Like A Rolling Stone: This masterpiece is one of the songs that defines Classic Rock. 5 / 5 2. Tombstone Blues: As usual Dylan's Lyrics are strange, and beautiful. As a lyricist and a poet Dylan never fails to be in top form. 5 / 5 3. It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry: Very good, I also reccomend the sped-up Alternate Version featured in the No Direction Home Soundtrack. 5 / 5 4. From a Buick 6: 4.5 / 5 5. Ballad of a Thin Man: 5 / 5 6. Queen Jane Aprox.: 5 / 5 7. Highway 61 Revisited: A catchy, clever Dylan song, the best off the album, but that's pretty hard to choose. 5 / 5 8. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues: 5 / 5 9. Desolation Row: Amazing Lyrics. My Chemical Romance's cover of this is a complete insult to Bob Dylan. 5 / 5 Sooooo yeah. This is one of the best albums of all time, so no s.h.i.t buy it! Grade: A Essential Tracks: Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, Ballad of a Thin Man, but buy the whole album.

- This Album is now 50 years old!

And I remember it from then. I haven't listened to it in years, but yesterday I watched the Dylan reminiscence "No Direction Home." One of the performances in the movie was the "Ballad of a Thin Man" which I thought, "ok, I've got to get this on my iPod. And when I searched I realized it was on Hwy 61. So I listened to a couple of the other tracks, and thought. ":ok, I gotta buy the whole album." So I did. It is a great one.

- Great

Not too shabby I must say!

- Dylan At His Best

This is without a doubt Bob Dylan's best album. Any CD that starts with "Like A Rolling Stone" and ends with "Desolation Row" is going to be a masterpiece.

- This is more then just an album...

It is a masterpiece!!!

- History in the Making

One of Bob's best albums along with Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the tracks.

- This doesn't have something for everyone

It's an angry guy name dropping from the piano bench

- An old friend who's a genius

And this is the album that he took into overdrive. I remember when these hits went on the radio. Now, I loved the guitar albums, the folky stuff; but the promise of this music was a new world. Buy the album. You don't want to miss "Desolation Row."

- Excellent!!!

Dylan is the best. I love to listen to him. Never disappointed with his work. I call him my "Soul Father"

- Bob Dylan= Greatest Musical Mastermind Of All- Time

What you have with Highway 61 Revisited is the greatest work of the greatest musical mastermind of All- Time. The 1960's had many great influential and brilliant artists/ bands. Beatlemania was through the roof, everything they touched turned to gold. The Beatles talked of love and peace witch is why they became so popular so fast, aside from the obvious that they were ridiculously talented and made absolutely beautiful music. The Beatles are the best selling artists of all- time and always will be. Now Bob Dylan was not nearly as famous as The Beatles were. This was because he told it like it was. Bob Dylan did not get up on stage and sing to you about love and peace he stood on that stage and sang to you reality. With his raspy but yet beautiful voice he sang to you about the truth and did not tell you pretty lies to keep you happy and sell records. Bob Dylan instead choose to make meaningful and influential music. He could have gotten up on that stage and sang meaningless love songs and would have been one of the top 10 best selling artists of all- time. No, he wanted his music to carry more than a catchy tune Bob Dylan wanted his music to mean something, to inspire people to do great things and to realize the kind of world they are living in at this very moment. While The Beatles made the most beautiful music, Bob Dylan created the most influential and meaningful music to ever exist.

- This and Exile on Main Street are the 2 best Rock and Roll Albums of all time

A raucous speed addled Masterpiece of Rock and Roll. A revelation, a freight train, a work of Genius the kind they dont make anymore. A punk literate Artist and an incredible band making Art that will live on through the ages. If you like true Rock and Roll with Soul you must have this.
