Thats bout it. Just an awesome album all together.
The greatest albums i've heard from Nickelback. Breathe-9.6/10: Very great song, awesome guitar riffs, and good lyrics. Cowboy Hat-9.7/10: I'm not a fan of country music, but this song is really good. Leader Of Men-10/10: Wow, one of the greatest song i have EVER heard from Nickelback, beautiful lyrics, awesome riffs, and Chad Kroeger's amazing voice. Old Enough-9.3/10: Pretty good song, awesome guitar solo, and good lyrics. Worthy To Say-9.8/10: An awesome that you can hear lots of times and never get sick of it. Diggin' This-9.7/10: Wow, I thought this song was going to be different then i thought it would be in a good way. Really good Riffs and lyrics. Deep-9.0/10: My least favorite song in the album (excluding Leader Of Men Acoustic) , and yet it's still really good. One Last Run-9.5/10: Amazing song with good lyrics, nice riffs, and a nice heart beating drum beat. This song makes you want to run lol. Not Leavin' Yet-9.9/10: Never expected this song to be very good. Great riffs, good lyrics, and a cool guitar solo. Hold Out Your Hand-9.4/10: Great riffs, but you can't really understand what Chad is singing about. It takes you 7 times to hear the song to understand the song. Leader Of Men Acoustic-8.6/10: Original sounds better. Overall grade-98.67%/100%: A+. I hope this review helps you.
Out of all the albums I own, I really must say that this is probably the most disappointing. I had high expectations because of how popular Nickelback are, but was not happy with this. If you like Nickelback, there isn't anything here that will disappoing you, but if you only like their mainstream singles then I recommend sticking to those. Not a BAD album, and I might listen to it from time to time.., but I have to say.. shame on you Nickelback, I was expecting more. This album is pushin' the lower side of three stars. *Edit* Somehow I missed Leader of Men on the first play through. Good song, makes the album worth it. The one thing Nickelback always has goin' for it is that one (maybe two) good song(s). The album as a whole is better on the second time through. Although I stick by my 3* rating, I'm bumping it up to 4*, both to be nice and because I might recommend it to others. From disappointing to 'Meh, glad I bought it used'.
This is absolutly the best album ever
This is really the only album these guys have put out that is any good. Every other CD is just the same old crap. Why didnt they stick with this type of music? They sold out and now just put out the same formula over and over again. Throw out all your other N-back CD's and keep this one.
i love this album,but i've heard better
Breathe is my fav song!
This album might be good if you couldn't turn on the radio and hear music just like it all day.And the inclusion of an acoustic version of "Leader of Men" would be more impressive if the song were not so bland and still strangely familiar. "Old Enough" may actually be familiar to the few who own the soundtrack to Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows. The State is a dull example of alternative generica.
Soooooooooooo majorly incredibly awesome buy it rate listen love it
I got this as a pick of the month from BMG music club. It blew my mind from the first listen. I’ve been a fan ever since. F*** the trendy haters.
Their first album on a major label doesn't disappoint. The songs here show more variety than their newer albums and sound more raw and authentinc 1. Breathe (9/10) - One of the better songs on the album, has a good riff, some neat effects near the beginning and the end, and good tempo 2. Cowboy Hat (7/10) - A more country sounding song, too much distortion for my like but good vocals 3. Leader of Men (8/10) - Unlike many others, this is not my favorite song on the album. It is good, but simpler 4. Old Enough (9/10) - First of three very good songs in a row, has a more radio sound than raw. Good vocals and guitar playing changes up 5. Worthy to Say (10/10) - The best song on the album. Has many tempo changes, two guitars for the most of the song, and never gets old. 6. Diggin' This (9/10)- Vocals are harsher than other songs, but has great guitar playing and a good solo 7. Deep (7/10) - A grunge track with very loud guitar playing. I like this track, but it is not for everyone 8. One Last Run (6/10) - Probably the weakest song on the album, tries to use distorted vocals and the guitar as a rhythm instrument. Can be a good listen, but gets rather old. 9. Not Leavin' Yet (9/10)- One of the suprise songs on the album, has harsher vocals that really fit the mood of the song. Good solo too 10. Hold out Your Hand (7/10) - I don't really like this song, the riff gets very repetitive 11. Leader of Men Acoustic (5/10) - The lack of the hard chorus kills this song Overall, this is a very good rock album, their only album where I can listen from front to start without skipping any songs but 11. Fans of the "new", radio friendly Nickelback may not like it, but they have a very authentic sound here and show some variety in songwriting.
I bought this album back in the day when it came out cuz Leader Of Men was playin on hard rock stations... yes rock, not pop like now and I loved it. All these tracks are awesome but when I saw these guys live right before Silver Side Up came out and Breathe was one of the best performances I've ever seen live
Why? I love Nickelback, but what is this? What happened to good music? If your looking for good Nickelback music, look on their other albums.
leader of men is the best song ever <3
To go back and actually remember when nickelback was actually a rockband and not an mtv sellout those were the days dont get me wrong i love nickelback but now days they have gotten way to commerical but anyways this is by far nickelback at there best!!
Nickelback rocks!!
dont get me wrong i luv nickelback but this is an old album
This album is great! Their roots start in the country-rockish sound on this album, and they have evolved into something so their own! New age Nickelback lovers may not be so hip to this cd, but you should give it a listen!
Beats their new stuff by a long shot. "Breathe" and "Leader of men" are really amazing singles. For me, those two songs are what really represent Nickelback. Those distorted guitar riffs, unusual lyrics (in a good way), and Chad's voice made it an instant sale for me.
than listen to this band.
If you liked "Silver Side Up", your going to love "The State". This album has the great Nickelback sound we all love. "Leader of Men" shows of Chad's amazing voice. "One Last Run" and "Breathe" keep the rock n' roll going, and you have other songs like "Worthy to Say" and "Old Enough" to make this album a success. A must have to discover more of what Nickelback is about. GREAT MUSIC.
great album! might be a little old but still great.
This is so much better than the Nickelback of today. They really had some great songs here. Now they all sound the same. Nickelback doesn't make bad songs now, but they don't make any great ones either. They are all catchy tunes, but not something you want on you iPod forever. I really wish they would come out with something different that has the feeling of 'The State'. A+ on this one though.
I listened to the samples itunes gave us and this album sounded really good and fast, but when I listened to it, all the songs were ballads, not once ounce or flippin second of hard rock or fast paced music! I give this album a 3 because I like Nickelback, just what were they thinking when they put 11 ballads in a hard rock album, then come out with a no ballad, hard core album Silver Side Up! Especially when Curb was a hardcore album! :^(
I really wish that Nickelback never released All the Right Reasons. Most of these people are complaining about this album being to mainstream. One guy even said why listen to this if you can just turn on the radio to here the same old stuff but in reality, All the Right Reasons is the radio. This was before the radio killed Nickelback. Every one of their new songs got way overplayed and made that album a complete waste of money because you literally could turn on the radio to here the same thing. Though this is one of Nickelback's older albums it is actually more refreshing than the new stuff.
All of you who put five stars need to stop acting like women. This Album is to soft but better than Curb. Not the best Album for headbangers like me
Why did nickelback have to change so much? I don't really like this album but at least his voice doesn't like he had been smoking forever. I wish they would go back to the way they were. Please
Nickelback Rocks
Out of all of their albums, this is the best
i love nickelback there my fav band.but this album is freakn awesome!!!!
ok yes we know nickelback is amazing but silver side up did NOT come before The State!
leader of men its simply amazing!!!
I have to say this Album is pretty good
Im a Nickelback fanatic so I pretty much will listen to anything Nickelback will sing. This album is not as good as Silver Side up or any of the ones after it, but its not too bad. Its their third album so they were pretty much just getting started. If you were only going to buy one i would recommend All the Right Reasons or Silver Side up. Still though I love this album.
I admit, where they're turning in the music world is a major tun-off; so it's good to have 'The State' to come back to. Some of the best songs are Breathe, Cowboy Hat, Old Enough, and Deep. I would definitely recommend this album because this is the real Nickelback.
This is a VERY good CD. It's a lot better than there "Curb" CD. But either way, Nickelback rocks and there gunna keep on rockin' until Chad Kroeger dies! Well, mayb a little bit before that. Either way, NICKELBACK IS AWESOME!!
I think all the nickelback cd's rock and i hope to see a 6 cd.
Every song on this album is awesome. The best two are Worthy to Stay and Breathe
i think this is a really good one by Nickelback.
Nickelback took this album and made it an original rock album. Pretty good to my stainders, but if you like head bobbing music this isnt the album.
this is the absolute best album i have ever heard, and my all time favorite. this nickleback with a little touch amazing.
This is where they started, fantastic!
Ah, 'The State', the only Nickelback I've yet to review. Well, unfortunately, I don't have too much to say about this album. I've listened, I've listened again, and I've listened some more, but I just can't get into this album, save for one song: 'Leader of Men'. I personally don't like albums that have one decent song and filler for the rest, and I have to say that 'The State' does a fair job of following that formula. Compared to the previous effort 'Curb', this one really falters. The songs are very generically structured; there's not enough variety between them to even justify it's almost half-hour total length. They had a good thing going with 'Curb', and they really hit the nail on the head with 'Silver Side Up', so I would call 'The State' a kind of transition album from the good to the great. As I mentioned before, I absolutely love Leader of Men, but I will occasionally listen to Breathe and Worthy to Say every so often.
This song is one of my favorites. The bass sounds really cool. If you have a good size subwoofer, turn the volume up it feel awsome. It is one of my top 10.
I can't explain it! It's amazing. This album is one of the best that I have heard!!! If U liked their album Silver Side Up, then U'd love this album.
that is one nice album!!!!!
Nickelback's "The State" is a solid debut in 1998 (Not 2007) from the band we now know all over the world today. At certain times when listening to this album, it might sound like some of the songs might run together and not have the powerful, thunderous sound that they have here in the present. However, "The State", like most debut albums from the 90's didn't benifit from lots of production time and fine-tuning like you hear today. Nickelback is notorious for tweaking their sound relentlessly until they find what they want. Unfortunately, "The State" couldnt be given that much attention to detail when it was recorded due to money issues at the time. Their next album, "Silver Side Up", would be the first to get the luxary of time and as we all know, the rest is history. The standouts on this album are "Not Leavin' Yet", "Breathe". "Hold Out Your Hand", "Worthy to Say" and of course, the slow-building-and-then-roaring-chorus "Leader Of Men" (A personal favorite). The lyrics have a somewhat darker tone and hard-to-understand-the-meaning feel to them, unlike their hits on later albums (i.e. - "How You Remind Me", "Figured You Out, Rockstar, etc). Lead singer Chad Kroeger admits that after this album, he began to write in a straight-forward tone that this Nickelback fan agrees with. With that said however, the lyrics of this album do feel alot more personal and it can relate to everyone on their own personal level. If you are a new Nickelback fan due to their hits off of "All the Right Reasons", this album might be hard to get into due to the huge difference in sound, tone, drummer and mood of the albums. "The State" is an album that has to grow on you. If you let it stand on it's own and accept as Nickelback at a different time, then "The State" will have you rocking your head and jamming on your air guitar. "The State" definetly isnt for everyone. But if you appreciate good ol' fashioned, jamming, rock n' roll w/ passion, then I think this album is just for you
Kind of sad, what they've become these days, compared to what they used to be...

A state is a political entity that regulates society and the population within a definite territory. Government is considered to form the fundamental apparatus of contemporary states. A country often has a single state, with various administrative divisions. A state may be a unitary state or some type of federal union; in the latter type, the term "state" is sometimes used to refer to the federated polities that make up the federation, and they may have some of the attributes of a sovereign state, except being under their federation and without the same capacity to act internationally. (Other terms that are used in such federal systems may include "province", "region" or other terms.) For most of prehistory, people lived in stateless societies. The earliest forms of states arose about 5,500 years ago. Over time societies became more stratified and developed institutions leading to centralised governments. These gained state capacity in conjunction with the growth of cities, which was often dependent on climate and economic development, with centralisation often spurred on by insecurity and territorial competition. Over time, varied forms of states developed, that used many different justifications for their existence (such as divine right, the theory of the social contract, etc.). Today, the modern nation state is the predominant form of state to which people are subject. Sovereign states have sovereignty; any ingroup's claim to have a state faces some practical limits via the degree to which other states recognize them as such. Satellite states are states that have de facto sovereignty but are often indirectly controlled by another state. Definitions of a state are disputed. According to sociologist Max Weber, a "state" is a polity that maintains a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence, although other definitions are common. Absence of a state does not preclude the existence of a society, such as stateless societies like the Haudenosaunee Confederacy that "do not have either purely or even primarily political institutions or roles". The degree and extent of governance of a state is used to determine whether it has failed.
