The Time is the 1981 debut album by The Time. The album proper was produced and arranged by Prince (using the moniker Jamie Starr) The Time produced three singles: "Get It Up", "Cool" and "Girl", with the first two charting within the top ten on the R&B charts. "Cool" was covered by Snoop Dogg for his ninth album, Ego Trippin'.

Great live band and great party songs . Major kudos to Kay Ten for pointing out the facts as any resemblance to Prince is real and that "The Time" was a Prince creation along with Morris Day as he produced the first 3 albums under the moniker "Jamie Starr" among other artist and albums during one of his many prolific periods of his career. Morris was originaly the drummer before becoming the frontman. It all started with Prince who also wrote most of the songs besides playing and producing them bfeore firing them during the 1999 tour for missing a show, Jimmie Jam & Terry Lewis were late from a recording session. The rest is history as they went on to be just as prolific as Prince in thier own right as Producers. "Pandemonium" was the first album that was not completly under his control as they'd departed the family at that point but still on the label as Prince owned the name. Prince did contribute to that album but not to the extent of the first 3 albums,it shows as there were not as many great songs on it but the production was as polished as the Jam/Lewis sound was born by then. Standout track from Pandemonium "Sometimes I get Lonely" Guess who had a major part in that song creation?
Contrary to the iTunes review and many customer reviews, this album is all Prince, all the time. It was recorded at Prince's (purple) house on Kiowa Trail in a Minneapolis suburb. He played every instrument and did the backing vocals. Morris sang lead and some background vocals, but that is it. Not taking anything away from the musical abilities of The Time, but they (again, except Morris) had absolutely NOTHING to do with what you hear on this album - or on the follow-up What Time Is It? This is a great album and The Time were a great live band, but the albums were just episodes of The Prince Show.

This is a Prince album under The Time name. All the tracks were done by Prince and Dez Dickerson, the guitarist in his live band at the time. Prince simply recorded Morris Day singing over his vocal track (one can easily hear Prince in the background on some tracks). Prince did all the music himself on all of The Time albums, except 'Pandamonium'. However, there was a requisite by the boss (Prince) for the actual band to be better than the record when playing live, which Prince would regret during the 1999 tour. With this album, Prince kept his heels firmly rooted on the R&B charts while making his invasion on the Pop/Rock charts with his main albums. This is a MUST HAVE for all collectors of Prince's music.
All the people who said it was Prince and Dez Dickerson, whatever. If Prince was solely responsible for the first 3 albums by the Time, whoop de doo!! Still some of the finest music on the planet. Ice Cream Castles was not that great considering it was the first album without Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. It was more likely Morris and Prince on the first albums. Track after track is the funkiest on the planet. Still can't believe Kool and the Gang beat them for best R&B group in the Grammys that year.

I just found an old cassette, put it in a player that works and heard "Girl" for the first time in almost 20 years. I can't believe that WB Records re-released this album just as I rediscovered this lost favorite. This is the music of the eighties that was so much fun to dance to and still can't keep me sitting still. The sound of the Time has stood the test of time and their lyrics cannot be matched!!
Some may not know that this album was produced by Jamie Starr (Prince) and Morris Day, respectively. Prince and Day did all of the tracks before hand, then recruited the rest of the band to meet the challenge. It was dark and hard hitting in the soon to become style known as the "Minneapolis Sound". If you loved albums by Prince like Dirty Mind or Purple Rain, rewind the tape to where it was born. These songs are certainly worth the ear time. Good things!

Thank You iTunes for FINALLY putting out COOL and THE STICK! Took years, but it's now available to buy....."album only", of course! Still "Stick"-ing it to your customers with this ploy, but it's "Cool"! It's now in my iPod forever! Just a great debut album by The Time! One last thing: the sound is horrible! It's recorded too low, and has no dynamic range/spacial separation at all! In other words, the music needs the iTunes treatment , or digitally remastered. This album deserves better!
They were masters in the studio and on stage. Yes, Prince was a huge part of their success but his own eclectic style shows that he could've used the tight and timely production talents of Jam & Lewis in his later years just as much as they used his in their early ones. I would've loved to have seen a Jesse & Prince album as well but he also proved to be more then a Milli-Vanilli act with the axe once he broke out on his own. Newbies should check out Jesse Johnson's solo albums as well as there are nuggets of "timeless" gold to be found there. Kudos to Jellybean & Monte as well. You are all missed in this recent age of sampling and classless music. Probably the best "funk/R&B" BAND of the 80's.
When I first heard this band, I was in Frankfurt, Germany. I initially thought it was Prince, but found out later that they were a part of the emerging Minneapolis sound. I loved them from day one and I am still a fan after all these years. I am glad iTunes finally got the full album. If this is your first exposure to this group of fine musicians such as the legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, lead singer Morris Day, as well as Jesse Johnson, Monte Moir and Jellybean Johnson, who are the best of the best in their own right, you need to hear this. Right out the box, you'll be hooked on "Get it Up" and "Cool". Those songs are classics. You'll love it as much as I did.
This is an awesome breakout album for Morris Day and the Time. Well worth picking up even if your a casual fan. One dig though, come on i-tunes give us "COOL" don't just offer it as an album only tune, this is unfair. Out of "TIME" gotta go!
Jesse Johnson was definetly one of the wickedest Funk guitar players...ever. a CD by him in Prince would have been fierce, we almost got a treat with a cut called "Shockadelica." Jesse was definetly under estimated and overlooked. Jam and Lewis, Ms. Jackson would have no "Control" and still be on Fame's "Dream Street" without the Dynamic Duo. Monte and Jellybean are on point and we all know about Morris "What Time is it" or "Jerome, bring me a Mirror" Day. Hawww Haw! The Time, wow saw them in concert they were too tight, they backed up Vanity six behind a drape while wearing their back-stage robes, LOL. Amazing how they were constructed, truly talented musicians and producers...entertainers, true creators. This CD was so damn cool. Only 6 cuts, that's how the Time laid it down, quality, no fillers. Loooong grooves..."Get It Up" was a prelude of what was to come and they delivered. Yo when can we get that Dez Dickerson, Apollonia 6, ...heck Vanity 6 and oh, Andre' Cymone, Prince's best friend from they school days. I wanna "Dance, the Dance Electric." P.S. what about a little "Screams of Passion" from the short lived Family...or Mazerati's "100 mph" ? let's get busy, I wants perfection! LOL
