I love Idina Menzel, but OMFG they totally killed her in these songs. They took a fantastic vocal performance and beat it with ugly and terrible drums/synth. She doesn't need that crap to sound amazing. And this really ruins the music.
Defying Gravity is my favorite song from the Wicked soundtrack, which is a musical I absolutely adore. Like when the dance mixes for “Rent” came out in 2005, I was initially taken aback at them trying to turn a broadway number into a dance track, but it actually works (though is met with a lot of criticism by Broadway fans who can’t appreciate a good dance track). Funky Junction & Anthony Reale provide the best mix here. This is mix has a more modern electro feel, and is slower than the other mixes, which really helps highlight the feel of the original song and it’s message. Eddie Baez and Tracy Young go for their typical dramatic tribal mixes. I have to give the edge to Young here, she really did good. Hani’s mix is minimal vocal - just her singing about flying high. Though it sounds like it could get boring, it’s actually a nicely made remix, especially in radio edit form. Finally, there’s the Josh Harris mix, which is a lighter house mix that i really appreciate. I recommend the entire EP, but if you just get one or two, go for Funky Junction followed by Tracey Young.
These mixes are Great! The whole purpose of remixes is to bring an artist to a differnt audience! Thanks to Warner Bros. for helping me discover someone I would never had heard otherwise. The Tracy Young Mix is the best of the bunch, not to say the others are bad.
I saw her perform this song in Wicked...she was amazing...this remix cd is horrible. It even makes her voice sound so so & she has a beautiful voice. It just makes me shake my head and ask "why?"
That kinda sucked!!! How do you take the song defying gravity and turn it into hip hop dance stuff!!! I like idina but that was a really ReAlLy REALLY BAD MOVE!!!!
These versions butcher the song so bad, that when I first heard them I thought they were another song all together! The tempo is slower, the words are a bit different and the "TAA-DAA" held high notes from the musical, are modulated down, which I think were the best things in the original Cast recording. I mean I love Idina, and I love the original Defying Gravity as heard in Wicked, but these songs are; I hate to say it; cheap imitations off of an already amazing song.
Why? Why did anyone want to ruin a perfectly amazing song like defying gravity...i am shocked...i can't believe it....buy the one from the Wicked soundtrack...please!
Depending on what I am in the mood for, I can choose appropriately. I love that there are several ways to listen to the same beautiful song.
Knowing the original spirit of the song and having in a good remix form makes it a GREAT option for workouts & running! Yes, the original rules, but I am thrilled to have these options as well. Peace.
i sort of want to DDR to these...but not actually listen to them
Who would want an entire album of different crummy beats put behind the SAME song anyway? seriously, is someone going to have a defying gravity dance party? sheesh.
Ugh, these five songs are the worst remixes i've probably ever heard! Not only do they deprive the original amazing broadway song of any of the magic it had from the beginning, its also just a terrible sound. The beat is all wrong for the song. Anyone even a little bit loyal to the original musical should stay away! Idina Menzel is AMAZING, but not like this. you have been warned.....
I am a huge fan of Wicked the Muscial, and Defying Gravity is the best song on the Broadway Soundtrack. But this makes the song seem like a Pop song. It totaly ruins the message, It doesnt even sound like Idina Menzel.
Before you buy this, it's best to mention that this album contains reproductions of Defying Gravity that were intended to have an up-beat tempo, extra bass, and special audio effects. Based on some of the feedback left, it seems people thought the mentioned terms like 'Remix', 'Mix', or 'Club' meant something else. If you don't like techno or dance, don't buy this album and say Idina ruined or disgraced the deeper meaning of Defying Gravity. In fact, I think she's done musical theatre a favor by reaching out to a fan base that might otherwise not have any interest in our beloved genre. For the record, I love both musical theatre and dance beats- Although Idina does an amazing job vocally, a couple of these remixes just doesn't seem to add much energy of this dynamic song. I do however, love Eddie Baez and Hani's interpritation. None the less, the album is quite entertaining and addicting. Idina Menzel's unique voice and style is perfect for club music and I for one would love to see her do more. It would be great to see (or hear) Idina fall in the ranks of Kristine W. or Tamia someday.
what is your people's deal? Huh? Idina Menzel felt like making another version of the original. If you never knew about Wicked, and heard this song for the first time, say, at a wedding, would think it was a good choice? I think the song is beautiful.
I don't understand why they changed a very powerful song from WICKED. This song is slaughter in these remixes
these are like bad pop songs. You cant even tell thats her voice. They killed the song.period.
if you guys loved the original broadway version of defying gravity, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU! for a person who has never heard the broadway version (shame on you), this could be a possibility... but for the most part, you will fall completely in love with the broadway version once you hear so don't bother with this... get the original!
The original was amazing! What is this?
In the play "Defying Gravity" was the Best song yet but this mix right here it sounds like hobo singing. It makes the singers The Isley Brothers look like the best and her song looks like Crap. I think she'd better stick 2 the regular version because it just makes me wanna puke!!!
Its not true if you love the original that you'll hate these because I'm in love with the original and I love these! Granted its not as good as the original bc nothing can beat the original but these are really good if you like to get up and dance a little. Though I may only like them because I love this techno type beat it just makes you want to move and be happy even if your down. It's just a very fun spin on a great song!
ok, i love wicked. idina menzel is great too...but come on! these remixes make it seem as though the musical has no meaning, even though it does. i just don't like these songs. defying gravity is one of my favorite songs, but i would never buy these versions...just surprising
Idina Menzel is amazing, I listen to the original Wicked recording all the time, but this is just awful! They took an amazing beautiful song, and messed it up!
Ok, let me first say that of course it doesn't compare to the original broadway song.... It doesn't have to though.... so stop comparing it.... This is by far the most popular song from the musical Wicked. The original remake of the song is great and the remixes are really good too. I have been to dance clubs all over the country and when they play one of these remixes the crowds go crazy. It's a great way to hear a great song at the clubs and everyone sings along and dances and has a good time. If you don't like it then don't buy it..... These remixes are made for the club hoppin theater kids and I think it's a wonderful twist on a wonderful song.... It's also great to play at cast parties!!!
Another stupid remx. Remixers can't remix anything, so if they can't remix a black void...there's no way they can remix anything Idina or anything Wicked. Us Menzel fans love anything she does to death...but this is an all time low. Idina, your voice is still amazing in these mixes, but I can't belive you'd allow this! You already took a huge risk by making YOUR version of Wicked's anthem, and that turned out to be the best thing you've ever done. But you already mixed Defying Gravity once, don't take a song, mix it, then let mixers mix the already mixed song!! Gosh!! Us Wickens (that's fans of Wicked, just like Rentheads are fans of RENT) are very glad you made your version because now we can defy gravity with YOU personally! But then you remixed it. Now all of your fans stopped flying with you and are falling from the sky, clenching their hearts, because you allowed to remix this. Idina, you are still my idol...but I am mad. Not at you! At those stupid mixers... >=(
that these remixes are not true to the intentions of Stephen Schwartz, but there is no way that you can deny the uplifting good nature of this song. In that regard I believe Schwartz would be clapping his hands for Idina. No- I don't think these remixes are nearly as good as the track from "Wicked", but I do believe that this is a wonderful way to touch future generations. GO IDINA!!
This is a well produced version of a broadway song. Linda Eder does it all the time with her songs. Sorry if some of you are offended it doesnt sound like the original-thats because Idina recorded it later and made different choices. I think its a great tribute for the dance side and mainstreaming this music. Schwartz has always done this kind of popularity from Pippin to Hunchback. And only a divine voice of Ms.Menzel can be that inspiration. Bravo!!
I really do not like DJ remixes. Not only do they cover up the whole song with annoying sfx, but it takes up too much memory on my measely 1G nano.
i have bought that, but defying gravity is supposed 2 b deep and it is weighed down by all of this heavy techno junk. i love dancing 2 music, but songs from musicals are supposed 2 make u clap, not dirty dance.
It's impossible to ruin a song such as Defying Gravity. They mixed it up and made it sound danceable, which I appreicate. And Idina is the greatest singer I know. Plus, yeah, it's a broadway song. Get over it. Broadway songs can be technofided. And I would shop at any store that played this.
seriously, why does defying gravity need to be changed? ugh! its so annoying when people take beautiful songs and try to make them more upbeat! the message in defying gravity makes much more sense when its slower anywayz!
I love Wicked I've loved it ever since i first saw it, I also love Techno, and what these D.J.'s did with this song is amazing i love it.
Idina Menzel did so much to make this awsome. This is worse than trash. Don't buy it!!!!!!!!
well i actually dont usually mind this kind of "dance" music but to use it on such an inspiring song with so much emotion.....thats just wrong. =[ sorry....
I feel like Idina has just taken one of the most brilliant songs ever written and smushed it under all of that pop-ness and sterotypical stuff. Defying Gravity remixes go straight to the bottom of my list. It sounds like Popular, one of those bubble-gum songs. Filler. Empty calories. Disappointing.
This album is a disgrace to the 'original' iconic song "Defying Gravity." It is also a humiliation to the Broadway Musical "Wicked!"....if i could rate it negative stars i would...
they should just leave the song alone and stick to the way it sounds in wicked not change it to a bunch of different types ofthe song
I bought the Wicked soundtrack after seeing the stage production and I love it. I bought Idina's solo album because I loved the soundtrack and fell in love with her solo version of Defying Gravity. When I found this EP I bought it because I like techno remixes. If you feel the same get this album. If you're unsure about the techno, get Idina's Defying Gravity single and eventually you'll want more.
Where do I start? I love the Wicked songs, in fact, I'm obsessed, but these songs completely ruined it for me! How can they do this to such a beautiful song as Defying Gravity? It is just unthinkable! This is a disgrace to the true Wicked voice. It's TERRIBLE how people can bear to mess with this amazing song and turn it into something it was never meant to be.
omggg omgg these remixes are soooo gooodd(= (= i agree tht defying gravity the orginal is of course the best and they kinda didd kill the song when they did it as a club remix but ;; they are great and something very easy to get stuck in ur head/ dance to!!! <333
i LOVE her singing in wicked...i dont know if i love it here. .. i'm going to rethink buying one...idk.
Why did they have to go and ruin it? Why? The original song is wonderful. Idina's voice is beyond amazing. But why did they have to go and do this to it? Well, let's be grateful it was still Idina doing it. Just think what it would be like if it was someone else.
Why?! Why take a perfectly wonderful song and completely ruin it? This is wickedly BAD.
I adore the song Defying Gravity as it is practically the theme of the greatest broadway show ever, Wicked. But when you remix it to sound like all the other annoying dance beats... no. If you love this song, dont buy the dance remixes. Buy the original broadway version, or Idina's single version. Click yes if you found this helpful. :]
Yes it's a remix but they're ugly and horibble. I listened to all the sample tracks and somewhat they sound too similar to each other. Zero stars.
I love watching bway shows, and wicked is by far my favorite! I think that this song, expressing the whole break away theme, is awsome and it should be expressed in many different genres. that way it can fit everyones taste. defying gravity used to be my fave song from the show, but sfter a while i kinda got bored with it because i knew how it went, with these remixes, it makes me want to get up and dance, so now defying gravity is played in different forms, I dont get bored anymore from listening to it. I still like the original recording tho, it is awsome and I cant wait to see the show again
I love Dfying Gravity. My thoughts are completely split in perfect halves. I love and I hate it equally. The remixes are really cool (especially if you liek the violin - get the Eddie Baez version), but they trashed the beautiful song. I don't klike Glinda in the song, though, 'cause this song is about Elphaba not Glinda, so I like how she's not in there, but5 I'm mad how she's not in there. It's crazy. You have to buy it to know for sure. I love it and hate it. *Shrug*
Let me start off by saying that I only gave this two stars instead of one because all five remixes, as horrible as they are, do have Idina Menzel's vocals, which blow my mind always. Defying Gravity is a heartwrenching, emotional roller-coaster of a song that sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it. Any version that does not do that does not have my respect. None of these capture the power and simplicity of the song; instead they soup it up and cover it with confetti and sprinkles and frosting until the raw, pure emotion of the song is lost. Both thumbs down, with of course no disrespect toward Idina Menzel--you are my hero. These remixes do not do you justice.
this is awsome! i will so buy it!
I just saw the touring broadway production of WICKED last night, and the original of this song was amazing. I don't understand how the writers, producers, or Idina herself could have let it be turned into such a monstrocity.
