this is so amazing and inspirational this movie and book is the best story ever. i love it so much. i'm 15 and i wish my age group could appreciate movies and books like this more.
I just recently finished reading the book and then watching the movie. Alcott is such an amazing author and Thomas Newman is a musical genius. I absolutely love the song "The Valley of the shadow" because it makes me feel so many emotions; from those of sorrow and sadness to hope, inspirational and love. To think that a human actually wrote it!!
This is absolutely gorgeous music, as are all the scores composed by Mr. Newman . My only complaint on this one is of course the duration of each track. They are short by any standard...and thats a problem because you will truly want most of them to go on forever.
This is the most beautiful soundtrack I have EVER listened to. I'm addicted to little women and civil war, and this just is perfect for me. I'm 13 and I'm not in to any other music other than these beautiful songs right here. They move me to tears. It's just beautiful.

There are no words to express how beautiful and moving this soundtrack is. I usually don't like listening to plain instrumental music, but this soundtrack is like listening to a story, and the emotions evoked through this music are so pure and true to the book itself. I absolutely love it!

The movie itself does not do justice to the beauty of the book. Few films ever do. However, Thomas Newman's amazing score almost makes up for some of the aspects the film lacked. Newman managed to capture the essence or soul of the story perfectly. It is hopeful and happy, while also bittersweet and melancholy. I think Louisa May Alcott would have fallen in love with this music.
Simply perfect. The poignant oboe solos that are scattered throughout the album (especially in the instrumental "little women") are what inspired me to play the oboe. Thank you so much thomas newman for basically changing my life.

There will always be a place in my heart for this album. It's so incredibly beautiful. There's an ache in my chest whenever I listen to it. That's how beautiful it is.
Thomas Newman's score for Little Women should be right up there with the best film scores of all time. The music is so evocative of the time period (Civil War) and of the myriad of emotions in this film. It's a beautiful, haunting score and frames the story perfectly.
Thomas Newman put out so much great music in the 90s. I can't wait for him to do another score that is lush and rich. Don't get me wrong, I love his American Beauty type stuff too, but sometimes I just want to hear another score like Little Women or Meet Joe Black. Some other scores that fill this hole for me are "Beginnings" by new composer Josh Kramer, as well as some of Adrian Johnston and Rachel Portman's works.
I am a huge soundtrack collector and I have always loved one to a handful of songs from any given soundtrack album...BUT this soundtrack is beautiful from beginning to end. Whether you are a fan of the book or movies or not at all, you will be moved by this beautiful, moving score. You will not want to buy one track, even though you can on this album, you will want them all.

No offense, but us teenagerswere born into a really sucky generation who's idea of good music is trashy rap(gee, I wonder if it's simply a coincidence it rhymes with crap:)

I have loved this movie ever since the first time I saw it, when I was about six years old. The music in it is beautiful and well worth the money. Every time you hear this soundtrack it will make you want to the watch the wonderful film it is based off of. "Meg's Hair" is absolutely gorgeous, as are the others. My favorites are "Meg's Hair" and "Orchard House (Main Title)''. I recently bought The Ring/Ring 2 soundtrack, which is similar to this. It's instrumental music, but it is so pretty and ominous. I suggest you check it out if you are a fan of this album. Five stars...easily.

I've grown up loving this movie, watching it every time I'd get sick and whenever I wanted to watch a fav movie, I'd pop this in. I just wish it was in order... but after watching this since I was little, I'm sure it won't take us long to do just that.

I hold this movie close to my heart, mostly because of this soundtrack. It goes with the movie perfectly. I grew up in Massachusetts and have lived here my whole life, and this score perfectly- PERFECTLY- captures the feel, look, and nuances that can only come with the changing seasons and moods of New England, and the changing seasons of the the Concordian sisters from this movie. The winter tracks sound like the at first beautiful, but then long and forlorn Massachusetts winter, not only the winter from the movie, but the winters when my dad and I used to walk through the woods in freshly fallen snow. The Autumn tracks sound like autumn, nostalgic and sad but still a little warm, and the summer and spring tracks sound hopeful, light and freshly-grown. This soundtrack hits close to home, and sounds exactly like how it feels to grow up in the Northeast. I love Thomas Newman, he just gets it.

wow. this soundtrack is UNBELIEVABLE. My faves, without a doubt would be, Valley of the Shadow, Letters from Jo, Beth's Secret, Burdens, Under the Umbrella and Orchard House. One negative aspect of this soundtrack would be the shortness of the tracks (some are just seconds long) and the quiteness of a few of them (i.e. Scarlet Fever, and Ashes). Overall, this soundtrack is just gorgeous and moving. I would definately recommend it.
I always love how the soundtracks of movies, are the thing that makes a movie come alive. In most films the music to me is what really resonates with me and creates an emotional attachment to the film itself. This film score is no exception with its beautiful music.

There was something about this cast and the time of their lives and how well this soundtrack melt so well with the film. I watch this movie every Christmas season and I fall in love with it every time. I love movies from our past and this one is so comfortable to have on in the back ground as i do my house work or just a nice drive in the country playing on the radio in my car. Very wonderful!

This is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. I don't even particularly like the movie, but the soundtrack is so beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. The flowing melodies of the strings and rest of the orchestra are great for a rainy day or Sunday afternoon or whatever. Newman really put together an amazing, somewhat melancholy, but beautiful score on this one.
I read the book growing up. Living in Lexington, MA, it was almost required reading. Many years later, I saw this movie and it was everything I had remembered from the book. But the soundtrack is what truly brought the movie to life! The music is so beautiful, you almost wish the actors would stop talking. My absolute favorite is Valley of the Shadow, so sad!
*along with Thomas Newman's devestatingly simplistic score for The Shawshank Redemption, of course. He had a 2/5 chance that year, but amazingly enough he did not take home an Oscar for either films, which have deservingly become classics in their own rights. Thomas Newman will always remain one of the finest composers of our film generation, and in this case he is far better than Max Steiner, who scored the 1933 version of Little Women. A great composer knows when and where to use music, and more importantly, when silence is just as affective. Wheras Steiner's score tried to swallow scenes whole, Newman uses his uncanny ear to subtly move a scene along without manipulating his audience. His music is always simplistic, haunting, beautiful, classic. I've grown up with this film, and one of the key components is the score, which will make you weep with nostalgia. You cannot imagine Meg's wedding, Beth's untimely death or Jo taking the Professor's hand in hers without hearing the music. Newman's score has been used countlessly in trailers, tributes and montages. Everyone should see this movie to know where it came from. It's unforgettable.
even though i still am a teenager i have found this sountrack to be better then even lady gaga it is astonishingly moving and haunting especially orchard house the main title and if i was forced to name my top 3 favorite albums i believe this would be number 1
I love his score so much. I have read the book and while i read it i listen to this sountrack. It is just amazing.
Every song on the album is amazingly full of emotion. "Little Women" is the best of the songs, followed closley by "Orchard House", both of which really embody the movie as a whole. An absolute classic in American cinema, almost topped by its great soundtrack.

I love movie soundtracks, and out of all of the ones I own and all of the ones I've heard, this is in my top three without a doubt. It may be my favorite of all time, in fact. Not only is it great to listen to all year round, but it's especially fitting for the autumn and for the holiday season in general. The mellow songs are peaceful, the singing by the girls is sweet and clear, and the sweeping melodies and sounds of some of the other longer, more dramatic songs evoke that sense of openness of the American landscape put forth in work by such composers as Copland. A brilliant soundtrack, hands down.
