i'm not usually the guy who would stop to admire such great and breathtaking instrumental music, but this is extrodinary.
Not bad, but not great. I would say average +. We expected much more from this. It is enjoyable, but it came no where close to the expectations that we had based on the Yo-Yo Ma that we have in our collection. Yo-Yo Ma is one of our 5 year old's favorite artists. He did not enjoy this as much as the other works that he listens to continuously.
I have always wanted to hear the results of the Silk Road Project, and this is absolutely fantastic! It would have been great if the album included a digital cover with explanations on the music, unless there is one and I didn't see it. Please get it for us to learn more about each piece! Thanks.
If you are looking for classical music or pop related music, you should stop looking at this page right now. This is NOT a folk/world/pop album made for an easier listening (and i'm not saying these albums are not good) but an invitation to explore world music -from the silk road route- in it's real form. It's a fantastic alternative to more familiar, mainstream western music, and a way to understand a bit more the form and culture of different mindframes. Most of the tracks in the album are really good, but my favourites are these: Arabian waltz (this is such a cool dancing track!!!) Ambush from ten sides (cause it has a really good classical mood... and the combination of pipa sheng, guitar and cello is so innovative and great) the silent city, (it transmits immediattely the sensation of hugeness and loneliness of something so big as a city... this track i'ts TRULY unique) And finally, galloping horses. the pipa sounds so good and the last surprise of the track is FU***NG cool!!!! This album is something special... P.s.- I invite you to hear the podcasts about this album. It will help you to understand a bit more the creation and inspiration behind these pieces. These podcasts are a must have also... Sugoi!!! :D
I had never heard of Yo-Yo-Ma until this album but this is just great!
I didn't know Yo-Yo Ma until now. The instrumental playing is great, but I only like a few songs. I hope they have a video of this album where you can listen and watch at a time, and that will be great. RECOMMENDED SONGS: 1. Arabian Waltz 2. Vocussion
It's hard to believe this is actually a symphonic orchestra with all the Middle Eastern, middle Asian, and far-east Asian music. I'm so happy that I downloaded this entire album. Not only did I add this to my Symphony playlist, but I also added it to two other play lists: Middle Eastern and Far Eastern (Only the music that is typical of those regions). When I first mentioned "It's hard to believe this is actually a symphonic orchestra" I am referring to the very beginning when I only heard pure Middle Eastern style sounds! LATER; however, the entire orchestra came out in other songs. Some of you will remember Ravi Shankar and the London Symphony Orchestra. This album is with that same idea (blending western instruments with eastern) This is really a special album and a joy to listen.
Being a violist myself, I appreciated the feature on this album in the iTunes store. I commend the Chicago Symphony and Yo-Yo Ma for an excellent CD.
I LOVE YO-YO MA... HE FINALLY CAME OUT WIT A NEW ALBUM THAT TOUCHES MAH HEART MAH WHOLE FAMILY LISTENS TO IT EVERY NIGTH WHILE WE MAKE DINNER....YO-YO-MA MUCH LOVE!!
Pure excellence...a fan of classical music for many years now...this album does not dissapoint!
SUPERB! If you like "Rites of Spring" you'll love "Song of Eight Unruly Tipsy Poets".
Very good compilation!! The Chicago Symphony sounds great in this album.
This album is simply incredible. I could not stay in my seat or hold in my emotions as i listened to the absolutely genius Ambush from Ten Sides and Vocussion. Two incredible songs to cap off another extraordinary album. The return of Night at the Caravanesrai is welcome as well =) If you remotely enjoy world/classical music, this album is a must buy
Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Project have single handitly united the East and the West. Fuising the best of both worlds. They have done more in their collaboration to unite us then what politicians do. Listem to the song, but go to their concerts and you are bound to sit next to someone that comes from the other side of world and you can learn their stories. This is a wonderful album and beautiful project.
This Album is AWSOME!!! Any fan of classical music would love this! Plus it's got some contemporary stuff two.
pretty good. not yo yo ma's best
Show cases the Chicago Symphony well, not enough of Yo-Yo Ma or of a specifically familiar sound but not a tremendous departure either. Good listening on a rainy day with a nice cup of tea and a good book.
Ma is one of the premiere instrumental prodigies of our time. This is a wonderful juxtoposition of Eastern influences and the enduring classicism of Chicago's instrumentalists. Ma's mastery of the cello and his ability to emote musically make understanding this music much easier to the Western-trained ear. Overall a very good album.
I loved this cd. My marching band is actually basing our show off of Arabian Waltz. It's super hard to play but it's also wonderful to hear a high school band playing symphony music. We also do Vocussion in part 2 of our show. It's really cool. This cd is just awesome! Yo- Yo Ma is amazing! Look for us at Bands of America National Championship! GO TWHS BAND! And New Impossiblities for making our show a winner! Arabian Waltz and Vocussion are my top choices.
awsome, sweet for a movie
Yo Yo Ma and the rest of the Orchestra did a great job. This album is really good with all types of songs that you'll like. My favorite song is Arabian Waltz. Definetly 5 stars.
I truly enjoy Yo-Yo Ma, he's great. But this iTunes exclusive is not great, just ok. I liked 'Arabian Waltz', 'Night at the Caravanserai', and 'Vocussion' (it's impossible not to like, it has got great energy, and it's funny). Cause it's just one theme (some tracks just sound the same from others), maybe that's why I wasn't blown away. Give it a try, and give your oppinion, maybe it's better than I give it credit for. Good luck!
This new album is a great mix of fast paces and relaxing strings. All beeing set to a wonderful Eastern sound. Yo-Yo Ma is wonderful!
I like this kind of music for it is very earthy, and I am sure that many others will, definatly a good orchestra, can't wait to see what they will come out with next!
its good, the orchestra is deep but some of it is a little to fast for my taste.
good song
I went to Chicago to see Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble and it is one of the fondest memories of my life. I would pay TWENTY DOLLARS just for The Ambush from Ten Sides!! This album captures the vigor and energy of The Ambush from Ten Sides. A lovely Arabian Waltz.
I was blown away by the variety of loud and soft music that is on this CD. I am sure that there are other celloists out there but this one ROCKS! Excellent job with the orchestra!
what a beautiful album- once again Yo Yo Ma outdoes himself! This album is filled with energy, even my children stop and listen when it is played! Encore!
Yo Yo Ma has, single-handedly changed my entire perception of not only the cello but classical music in general. When my son started learning to play the cello a couple of years ago I was quite surprised. Even though I've always been fond of classical music, I'd thought that I'd be out in left field in terms of my ability to appreciate his chosen instrument because I'd thought that the cello was a rather limited instrument. I had been sadly mistaken. Yo Yo Ma's music has literally transformed my relationship to music through his amazing ability to cross over all cultures barriers that may exist between any of the musical traditions that he has chosen to embrace. Each new work of Yo Yo Ma's is more extraordinary than his last and this new album will surely please both new and long-standing fans alike. He is genius whose talent also allows him to bring a deep spiritual One World message to his sublime music and his work will continue to have an ever-broadening cross cultural appeal. I am grateful that he both exists and that he stands out radiantly through his gift to our troubled world.
Yay! Good instramental music for once! Now I can use this for my dance & Skating programs...
How do you really rate classical music. The Chicago Symphony is one of the greatest around and with Yo-yo Ma playing with them, how can they go wrong. This is not your parents' classical. Worth a listen even if you've not been a fan before.
If you like cinematic music, the kind that transports you immediately into a different state of mind, well then, this album will be on your favorites list. Very adventurous with such a great modern twist! I love the mixture of sounds; Yo Yo Ma, strings, guitars, asian percussion, horns, other asian traditional instruments. It is a refreshing landscape of color. Loved it.
Yo Yo Ma has the beat for music
The songs are atonal and hard to listen to. "Arabian Waltz" and "Night At the Caravanserai" are the highlights of the album. The 4th song is a bit... odd.
I really liked this album, Its relaxing and really gets the imagination pumping. I really wish it wasn't live though, I love sleeping to this kind of music and the applause at the end of every song are somewhat an rude awakening. Other than that very nice album.
amazing blend of sounds, very lively experience in live viewing and in listening to the album. Yo-Yo Ma's genius takes music across borders and tastes, dont miss. Also must listen to the original silk road journey album.
This compilation is just wow!!! it is not a joke to put so much different music together and make it sound great!!! Two works stand out..."Shristi" and "Vocussion" A MUST LISTEN!!!
good job, great emotion in the music
