Caedmon's Call returns to top form with their 15th album, Overdressed. Former band member Derek Webb joins in the songwriting and singing on this excellent album. Songs like "There Is A Reason" and "Share In The Blame" hearken back to earlier Caedmon's earlier self-titled and 40 Acres albums, while "Expectations" and "Hold The Light" break new musical ground. While the return of Webb and the songwriting talents of his wife, Sandra McCracken, provide great spirit and life to the album, perhaps the greatest influence musically and lyrically comes from guitarist Andrew Osenga. Former front man for The Normals and talented solo artist in his own right, Osenga's insightful lyrics and sweet guitar licks nudge the band ever-so-slightly away from their acoustic roots towards a broader rock sound. Fans of the "classic" Caedmon's sound will rejoice to hear Overdressed, and fans of Webb, Osenga, and The Normals will find something to love here, too. New listeners will soon find themselves going back to stock their libraries with earlier releases. This is one good album, folks.
I have to admit I was super excited for this album because Derek is back, but I think that; looking at the tracklist and writers, it is Andrew Osenga who really shines. Especially "hold the light" is a fantastic and moving song and "expectations" just speaks of truth in terms of how we "market" the gospel but like isn't always like it is "on the billboard". There are so many great things on this album, and only a couple that seem too "ccm;" which is good because it feels like we have Caedmon's Call back again - only better because both Andrew and Derek are around. I think Danielle sounds great on her songs as well, especially how well her voice mixes with Derek's on "Share in the Blame" - a song that just might contain my favorite lyrics of the album. I enjoy that there is so much harmonizing on the album between the 4 singers and that it doesn't feel like too many people, but instead feels like everyone has a chance to shine. All four of them bring unique things to their singing --
It is always hit or miss in the music world and with all the albums they've come out with, they are always a hit. Its a great group of talented songwriters and singers here and for having this many albums and been in the 'business' of ministry this long, they always have a great unique sound different from the rest of Christian music. Not to mention their album artwork is always fantastic. Their music is sometimes so busy and full of all these great sounds, so the nice clean, simple artwork really balances it out. Once again, Its a keeper and once again, I am far from dissapointed. Thanks for your ministry. . . keep it up.
Anything that has Andrew Osenga on it is worth buying.
Caedmon's continues to deliver great music with this record. They continue to be original and I love the sound of having both Andy and Derek in the band. Derek always delivers strong acoustic parts and Andy's well thought out electric parts always provide the kind of textures that compliment a song without drawing attention to the parts themselves. Cliff and Danielle's vocal performances continue to be a strong cornerstone of their sound. Nice record CC.
awesome
Usually, if John & Sherry Rivers like something, it's not that good. They liked this, and it isn't good at all. I am all for trying new sounds and directions, but the band went way too far. Now, instead of having that classic Caedmon's sound, they just sound like everybody else. This album is lifeless. It feels mailed in. There is no meat to it at all. So much for Derek coming back to the band. I would hate to hear the songs that didn't make the album.
Caedmon's Call has gone back to their roots, acoustic and worshipfull. I very much enjoyed every single song on this CD.
I love Webb and Im a Big fan of Caedmons, but this work was not up to par with thier old stuff. Something is missing, and I think I know what it is: Webb is using his song writing skills elsewhere. Only if this band could truly come together on the next one. Hopefully these guys are not done, but after a flop like this, they had better pull some 40 acers out on the next one, because they got one acer left.
This is a pretty amazing album. I would say that all but 3 songs are very, very good. Andrew Osenga and Derek Webb shine in this cd.
Positives -Satisfying drumming, makes for fun listening (All Across the Western World) -More mature themes; family life, community suffering and comfort -Derek Webb contributes -âHold the Lightâ offers good symbolism and meaning -Ten Thousand Angels is atmospheric, moody and hints at depth Negatives - "Overdressed" theme is superficial and has little to do with the album. - Little to no album cohesiveness -Repetatively basic themes - God's there, God's good, I need God more and more. - Lyrics need revision "If love is an echo of the heart the heart is a canyon." "The continent whose blood becomes a traitor.â âYouâre only free when you have no choiceâ -Derek Webb (in my opinion) uses his safest songs. - Not much memorable, the album didnât take me on a journey like âShare the Wellâ or âBack Home.â I can understand why Derek Webb left.
Wonderful debut release for Caedmon's Call on new label INO records. They really hit a home run with this record!
What can I say other than, âIâm a fanâ. Caedmonâs Call is one of the few groups that I have followed ever so intently, through numerous lineup changes, musical-style shifts, hits collections, fan clubs, the whole works. While I am sure my âsupportâ did not mean much to this friendly group of tennotexans, there came a point, probably somewhere in between the release of their first worship collection, In the Company of Angels: A Call to Worship, and the departure of long-time member Derek Webb, that I started wondering if Caedmonâs would ever rise to their 40 Acres fame again. Caedmonâs did certainly shake things up this time around, with the big news about the project being the return of Webb, likely made possible because of their new label-mate status. Whatâs more, one will soon notice that the vocal duties are this time almost evenly split between the four principal players, with lead singer Cliff Young singing on four of the twelve songs along with three each for Derek Webb, Andrew Osenga and Danielle Young. While his future with Caedmonâs Call is uncertain, Derekâs involvement certainly does foster up memories of old, as does his honest proclamations about christianity and the struggles all christians face. In the Derek/Danielle duet âShare In The Blameâ, Derek sings: âDonât blame the writer for the doubts in your headâ¨Donât blame the preacher for the lovers in your bedâ¨When you find out that the world is roundâ¨Everything is rearrangedâ¨You gotta hold up the mirror now and share in the blameâ Certainly a step down from his controversial âWedding Dressâ, yet still, Derek exposes venerability that we, as christians, so often try to hide. Musically, the track exhibits a much more stripped-down, organic feel, a style that is representative of Overdressed as a whole. Though taking a reduced vocal-load this time around, Cliffâs four songs are certainly the most radio-friendly of the bunch, with the albumâs first single, âThere Is A Reasonâ, already a top ten hit at radio. âAlways Been Thereâ, and âNeed Your Loveâ are likely follow ups, with both songs being similarly paced and written. âLove Grows Loveâ, a song sang by Danielle, yet written by Andrew Osenga, tells the story of Cliff and Danielleâs relationship from the time they first met, till they welcomed their first, of many children to come. Again, where âLove Grows Loveâ excels is in its honesty, with Osenga leaving out the long list of romantic cliches that so often find their way into songs about love. On the chorus, Danielle sings: âI fell in love with you, and the love became something newâ¨Added a name and we added a smile, keeps getting bigger ever further mileâ¨There on your bended knee, we sowed the seeds of our historyâ¨Coming up stronger than we ever could have longedâ¨Love keeps growing more loveâ So, what does a replacement guitarist do when the original guitarist returns? In the case of Caedmonâs Call, and much to our listening pleasure, he stays! Though mostly in the background (see CCâs press shot), whether writing, producing, or singing there is no shying away from the fact that Andrew Osengaâs influence is the real success story of this project. Though Osenga has been an official member of Caedmonâs since around the time of Back Home, Overdressed is the first album in which Andrew is truly able to shine as a multi-talented musician. Having written/co-written nine of the albumâs twelve tracks, Osengaâs lyrics are always a great listen. âHold the Light,â is one of the best moments on the album by far, with Christiansâ need for Christ echoing through the second verse: âAnd I stay up late, cause I cannot sleepâ¨I donât wanna face the quiet, itâs just God and meâ¨Cause Iâm waiting for the gavel handing me the sentence downâ¨Cause I donât believe forgiveness or even repentance nowâ¨There was no judgment in your eyesâ¨Just the silent peace of God that felt so real in you.â Whether it is through his singing, song-writing, or soothing electric guitar solos, with Overdressed, Osenga shows that Caedmonâs Call is officially his band, which is why Webbâs involvement in the project seemed the most out of place when listening to the record as a whole. Still, having two excellent musicians in the group is a very good problem to have, and could lead to some interesting results should this particular partnership become permanent. As a whole, Overdressed is a near-perfect collection of relatable subjects, beautiful melodies, and the honest message that Christians need their savior.Â
So sad. It is a good sound but I miss the sound we saw on everything pre 40 acres as well as that cd itself. True, the return of Derek made for some excitement whan I heard the news, I miss the old sound. It is all to refined now and just reminds me of the christian music I have long tried to avoid. It all sounds the same after a while. Sorry Caedmons...Been a LOYAL fan for over 13 years now, just am not overjoyed with this new one. The lyrical content however is great.
This is Caedmon's best album in years. The lyrics are touching and thoughtful. "Two Weeks in Africa" makes me tear up every time I hear it.
I really loved this album! Caedmons Call Is so God honoring in all there songs! I really hope they start playing more on klove!!!!!!
hey! this is some really cool stuff! i would definitely recomend it to anyone who is looking for some quality stuff. ROCK ON!
These guys play some great music, original style, you can't go wrong with their music.
I have never been a really big Caedmon's Call fan, but I really enjoyed this album! The acoustic guitar blends perfectly with the vocals, much like Steven Curtis Chapman's music. My favorite song was Sacred, and the only song I wouldn't suggest getting is Expectations.
This isn't my favorite Ceadmon's record (which is 40 Acres), but it does contain some memorable tracks. Recomended for any Caedmon's fan.
they're back with an amazing album. having derek webb back with them is the icing on the cake. there are many good songs, but the album as a whole is what i'm happiest about. its got a consistancy that makes a truley good album. "two weeks in africa" is reminicent of "share the well" days, and other songs remind me of 40 acres and derek webbs albums. very good writing, very good music, a music have!
Buy the CD in the store. 2 bonus tracks are omitted from the Itunes download. It seems unethical to post a music release with the same title but with different song content than the CD with the same title.
This album is incredibly strong, and old school and new school Caedmon's fan alike will love this album. Firstly, if you haven't heard, Derek Webb is back, and his lyrics and voice both are great additions to this album. He brings back a lot of the 40 Acres feel, but this isn't a copy of their previous success, it's definitely a product of their musical talent and the intervening years, which shows in the great variety of lyrical and musical content. This is a great album, and anyone on the fence should go ahead and take the plunge. I will say I do not think the single, "There is a Reason" gives a good taste of the album itself. Download a song or two, and then buy the rest of the album.
After Derek left CC I was don'e with this band because I was a fan of Derek and that was it. I loved Aaron Tate's writing, but he left, and still, the rest of the band leaves little to be desired. It is just another typical Christian band. With this album I was a happy to see Derek Webb with them, however I hope it's not permanent because Derek is so much better solo. However, I get a couple of new Derek Webb songs with this album AND I learn of Andrew Osenga....this guy is an amazing tallent. So give me the 5 songs off this album (the ones I bought) by Derek and Andrew....and leave the rest to the sappy Christian lovers...there's nothing wrong with it, it's just not for me.
The return of Derek Webb is great, but to be honest Overdressed seemed a little weak. Overdressed is definantly stronger than In The Company Of Angels 2, but not as strong as Back Home. The main dissapointment is that after hearing Derek's solo records, you see how CC held him back. The lyrics seem a little simple, the music a little conformed, but not to bad. I would like to see what they do in the future, but hope this does not distract Derek.
This is great stuff that Caedmon's has put together. It's right up there with any of their other albums.
