- Great

I am not a big fan of Pat Metheny -- I don't know much about his other CDs, but I have to say that I absolutely love this one. The song Is This America is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. There is just something about it that takes my breath away. The same can also be said of the other songs on the disc as well. I highly recommend this CD.

- Day Trip

I've been a Pat Metheny fan forever and this cd does not disappoint., "Is this America" is my favorite. Thank you Pat

- Straight ahead to the classic list!

Ok I own just about everything by PM. I saw these guys live 2 years ago in San Diego, and was blown away by the musicianship of Christian and Antonio, they stole the show and made Pat look like a novice. That was until listened to the pod-cast "about the music" discussing this album. From there I understood the music was designed and arranged by Pat to feature these guys. I am even more of a fan than before... how humble and respectful to the genre and to music in general is PM? Respectful and talented enough to let others shine and room to show their brilliance in a truly american art form of improv which is jazz. Structural virtuosity with imaginative melody. harmony in syncopated lush deep licks and clean clear voices that is an homage' to the craft and the music that is uniquely jazz. If you love jazz music in the tradition of C Trane and Miles, this album is a must. What is also a must is to see this master and his talented crew live. You remember the event for a life time, I promise you will be telling your grand kids you were fortunate to see this icon of American music live and in person. Kinda like recounting where were you when you first heard this PM trio? Me? it was a cool night in SD at Humphrey's. Now I have this album as a constant reminder and point of reference. Enjoy!

- Day Trip

Us old school Pat Metheny fans will love this one.Track six "Is This America?" made me smile thinking of back in the day's " This Is Not America". Metheny sounds great as usual.

- Unbelievable!

I just heard them play live tonight on march 2, in Santa fe. Everyone was on fire, it was just crazy

- A Great Pat Metheny Jazz Record

It's been a great a great couple of years for Metheny jazz fans, real jazz fans. While I love the Metheny Group recordings I must admit I am partial to his more acoustic or straight ahead fair. (If you could describe Pat's work as straight ahead.) I like the trio. Maybe because I love jazz as opposed to loving music. Music I like. Jazz I love. Day Trip is a jazz record. A jazz record with Pat's sensibility. For those unfamilar with the Antonio Sanchez, you better get onboard. He's the best thing to come from Mexico since the taco. It's his drumming that really give this cd it's vibe. Latin, swing, rocking and floating from dense to sparse. A real trip. Christian McBride plays smart, hip, grooving base. He can do it all and on this cd does. Yet all of this just let Pat be Pat. Pat can swing. Pat can bop. Pat can get shreddy. Pat is romantic. Pat is latiny. Pat floats. Pat is medlodic. This is a jazz record. And if you know anything about music it is as fresh as Bright Size Life, only deeper. For you casual Metheny fans who love music and like jazz I suggest you leave this alone. This probably isn't for you. This is great music but without the frilly edges. This is about guitar playing not guitar godding.

- Brilliant!!

This is one of the few PM discs I didn't own. Finally bought it and glad I did. It is probably my second favorite next to Still Life (Talking). Just incredible.

- WOW!

'Son of Thirteen' starts off this CD and the first thing that comes to mind is "Q&A"... I got to see these three cats jam in Minneapolis late last year and, aside from the relative lethargy of the audience, I thought they were in a really good groove! Watching them play off each other and just run was absolutely thrilling! IMHO seeing Pat play with anyone is pure joy, but having a CD now to listen to and remember the show I saw is priceless... If you love great jazz (esp. the trio format) and (for you core PM listeners) Jonse'd on Q&A, buy this w/o reservation- a steal at 2x the price!!!

- Metheny in his Element

Pat Metheny is a restless musical traveller. He's a rugged individualist who, along with his rotating band of collaborators, continues to steer the course of contemporary jazz into ever-new realms. His decades of recordings have so permeated the world of jazz and instrumental music that many new listeners may not know that much of what they are hearing today on the radio and web has roots in ideas that Metheny first brought to the table a few decades back - but which are now part of the world's jazz lexicon... And I for one am one of his toughest critics. I have all his recordings great and small. As well an ever changing playlist of everything from Radiohead to Earth Wind & Fire to Michael Franti to Melee to Alison Krauss to Foo Fighters to Jewel to Miles Davis to Duncan Sheik to Coldplay to Mice Parade to Brahms to Garbage to whatever. I listen for heart and I listen for authenticity in whatever I'm hearing. I hear it here. Lots of it. This is Pat Metheny in his native element, playing street ball with the best in the hood, everybody showing their skills and loving it. In this case it sounds like straight ahead modern guitar jazz. No gloss or layered arrangements here - just great tunes and breathtaking improvisation played by three great players - and one great bandleader. Personally, I prefer his more richly layered Pat Metheny Group recordings, but I've got room for these too. And these tunes will be even better live than on recording - I suspect - but here they sound good anyway. And as Metheny gets older, I wager that he will seek out more and more ways to get back to doing what he appears to love most - just stretching out and blowing hard over some great changes - while his band is giving it right back to him. Game on.

- Technically proficient

Pat Metheny seems to play without mistakes, he follows somewhat worn musical lines, though he does so with absolute precision and excellent technique. It’s always pleasant but I never feel surprised by the musical direction which makes the music very tasteful, but never quite delightful.

- Download that extra track - clarification

If you preordered the CD from Pat's site, you got two addional tracks: "Back Arm & Blackcharge" and "Inori". The track "Whatnot" is yet an additional track beyond those, but those two were only available to fans that preordered, at least for now. If you bought the CD from Pat's site, grab "Whatnot" here to complete a 13-track set. And Christophermorley... the reason you didn't have this previously is that it just came out a couple weeks ago... you weren't missing anything!

- Great Album..BUT, What about the extra track!!!!

This is a great version of the trio. I caught them live twice and I am glad they finally have a recording together. However, I bought this CD from my local music store. On that CD there are ten tracks. The iTunes version has 11 songs with " Whatnot" being extra. Now if this track is extra why is it listed within the context of the playlist and not at the end. I checked Metheny's website and the playlist does not include Whatnot as a track but does indicate that two free downloads of unreleased tracks were available upon pre-order through his website. I am assuming that Whatnot is one of those tracks, if not, why was it not included in the physical release of the album? If you bought this album in the store be sure to download Track 7, otherwise you are missing out.

- Hand-Crafted, Top-Notch Jazz

These three never cease to amaze! It sounds like you're sitting in the room with them, and they are carefully crafting the music as they go. Sanchez plays the trap set like it's a piano or guitar melody while keeping in perfect time. McBride is smooth as silk or fast as a cat. Metheny plays the melodies perfect with lots of exploration and resolute chords/notes that he has always been known for. The thing that stands out most about this album is that it takes you on a journey, and it feels so personal. The recording has excellent fidelity that's difficult to find in our digital world these days. Enjoy!

- This Day Trip is quite a ride

The new album is simply amazing. The level of interplay with this trio and the daring, coherent and articulate solos from these three virtuosos are just jaw-droppingly excellent. Insofar as Pat’s efforts in a trio setting, this album reaches new heights. The interaction is, to my ear, more cohesive than the previous trios with Haden/Higgins, Holland/Haynes and Grenadier/Stewart.

- What the hell is this?

Not a very good album at all. He has the nerve to criticize Kenny G. I'm just not impressed.

- gives really nice jazz feels.

fills the room with liveliness and makes. you feel like you're roaming the streets of new orleans in 1968. great! however, it is not my taste in music, so i don't cherish it too much.

- merci infiniment pat!!!!

un style unique et divin qui fait en sorte que tous les autres guitaristes peuvent aller se réhabiller!!!!

- Day Trip

- More great kicks from Pat

I first saw Pat play in the 70s, and I was amazed at how his phrasing seemed to transcend the linear nature of the guitar. This record once again shows off his musical personality and harmonic language, as well demonstrates how although we can all create music similar in construction in our homes, few of us have a voice that can speak as clearly as Pats.

Day Trip Wiki

A day trip is a visit to a tourist destination or visitor attraction from a person's home, hotel, or hostel in the morning, returning to the same lodging in the evening. The day trip is a form of recreational travel and leisure to a location that is close enough to make a round-trip within a day but does not require an overnight stay. The logistics and/or costs of spending nights on the road are worth avoiding. Such travel of using one location as a homebase is popular with budget and active travelers to avoid finding new lodging at each destination. A caregiver may take a day trip from their home to return to their children or pets.
