- Bold Song Writing

I used to tell myself that life wasn't worth living until I heard this album.

- Good album. Not his best.

Good listen. Definate buy for mountain goat fans.

- greg the bunny is an idiot

So i only reviewed this and gave it 5 stars (even tho i think its 4 star worthy) because greg the bunny gave this album only one star. I hate people who do that. If you like music similiar to The mountain goats and just dislike this album then i would understand the poor rating. Your well informed in the genre thus your opinion is relevant. However greg the bunny is not an indie music fan. I mean come on, the guy listens to anberlin and actually LIKES nickelback.....why is a nickelback fan listening to the mountain goats and bagging on the? Please dont listen to his opinion. if someone likes nickelback please dont ever listen to their opinion. This is a great cd by a great creative band, enough said. click yes if you agree, just to prove the pompous greg the bunny wrong.

- ugh

it always kind of boggles my mind that there is at least one person who clearly knows nothing about music of any sort that insists on writing reviews... anyways, yeah, im in agreement. one of the catchier mountain goats albums to come out in a while, which i think is a nice little throwback. as always, lyrically there isnt much better out there. its really nice for driving too.

- A lyrical masterpiece

John Darnielle may just be the greatest songwriter of the last 20 years. Nowhere else will you find lyrics as amazing as The Mountain Goats. Hectic Pride is 16th album for The Mountain Goats and they have yet to skip a beat. What other band can stay this fresh for well over a decade? And while the lyrics are incredible, it doesn't take away from the music either. Hectic Pride is a little more developed than previous albums but it still stays true to The Mountain Goats lo-fi style. Most of the songs are just a few string instruments with a couple guitars and drums stuck in every so often. Essential tracks: Sax Rohmer #1, San Bernardino and Lovecraft in Brooklyn

- Worth it!

The album is a bit more upbeat than they normally do but it still has the smartest lyrics ever. I love most of the songs, especially Sax Rohmer, Autoclave and Herectic Pride.

- Another Brilliant Darnielle Record

John Darnille has once again cranked out a new Mountain Goats record without a beat skipped in neither lyrical or instrumental songwriting. "Heretic Pride" draws away from the delicate 'Get Lonely' of 2006, and returns to Darnielle's angsty, revenge-ridden cries backed by drums, strings, and guitar line, and while isn't anything special or particularly innovative from The Mountain Goats, is just as enjoyable as any other of their albums, in fact has risen to one of my favorites. The opener, 'Sax Rohmer, # 1' (incorrectly labeled on iTunes), harkens back to "Tallahasse," with a punchy beat and catchy chorus detailing a traveler's return home (a common motif of The Mountain Goats). 'San Bernardino' calms the record's mood to a string and acoustic guitar duet before the title track exhibits Darnielle's quick tongue amalgamating with his unrivaled lyrical ability in an anthem for the blasphemous. Electric bass emerges in Autoclave with doubled vocals progressing into 'New Zion,' which shows a new direction into an almost reggae realm before turning into a vibrant piano finale. 'So Desperate' experiments with Darnielle's falsetto - feeling awkward at first but then falling into place. 'In The Craters on the Moon,' my favorite song on the album, is a war song characterized by bass drums and a sharp string line. Darnielle reaches new octaves as he cries in desperation about a world with no reason or order. Electric guitars are thrust into 'Lovecraft in Brooklyn' and then die in favor of a acoustic of the next three songs, before the finale in 'Michael Myers Resplendent,' an ethereal piano and string piece with Darnielle once again reverting to falsetto in a beautiful closer. Also included is bonus B-Side. But seriously, a fantastic buy - it's worth every penny.

- goats are rad

Sax Rohmer is beautiful

- I'm not sure, but maybe as good as Sunset Tree.

This is wonderful. Lovecraft in Brooklyn is especially nice with the addition of elec guitar as mentioned by other reviewers. this goes back to what makes the mountain goats amazing. Buy it if you like them, if not don't. not for everybody

- How is John so consistent?

A fantastic addition to the large catalog of the Mountain Goats. Its a long way from the lo-fi stuff we all fell in love with, but this may be the best of his "studio" offereings... perhaps better than even Tallahasse? Sax Rohmer reminds me of the older stuff (full of disturbing and intriguing imagery and simple folk guitar type structure), and the strings on San Bernadino are perfect compliment to his melancholy songwriting. If you don't like it after those 2 songs, you may need to look elsewhere.

- Wow this is good!

I really like the mountain goats! Their new album is not making any disappointments. Nice work Guys!

- wow

don't buy it. unless u like the celtic kind of voices than o.k.

- incredible

it's the mountain goats.... nothing he's ever released have I not enjoyed. best songwriter ever

- Pure Genius

Another classic Mountain Goats album! TMG are original and powerful! John Darnielle has song writing abilities that most musicians seem to lack these days. I don't write many reviews but it's bands like this one that can take music where it used to be and where it needs to go.

- 2 thumbs eagerly, yet predictably, up

I don't know what to tell you, this is a Mountain Goats cd. If you like the mountain goats, buy it, because you will like it for all of the reasons that you love what John Darnielle does so well, that I won't take the time to list here. If you don't like the Mountain Goats, then you should reconsider what it is you find appealing in life, because there is something, something I can't quite explain, that you just don't get about music specifically, but also life in general.

- Very good.

It's so nice these days to see solidly produced music that's also well-written. Heretic Pride is one of those rare modern albums that uses contemporary instrumentation, and is still intelligent. Songs like "Autoclave" and "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" make fantastic analogies that help tremendously to clarify the point of the song. In addition, "New Zion" and "Heretic Pride" deal tactfully with religion, while songs like "So Desperate" and "How to Embrace a Swamp Creature" cover the more uncomfortable aspects of romance. The bonus track "Toolshed" is based off of an infamous line from the reversed version of "Stairway to Heaven," and reworks it into one of the more haunting songs produced by The Mountain Goats so far. Overall, this is a fantastic album, and I would definitely recommend it.

- Good, but not the best Mountain Goats album.

The Mountain Goats have never done a bad album. Some albums are better than others though. This isn't one of the better albums. Most Mountain Goats albums have a concept. This one doesn't. As a result, the stories in these songs tend to go by too quickly and I don't really get into them. There's only 3 songs that I love. "In the Craters on the Moon," "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" and "New Zion." The rest of the songs I like, but don't love. "Craters" is a top 10 Mountain Goats song though.

- Very little need be said.

I have listened to this band since I was 14 years old. I am 26 now. I have never been disappointed. "Transcendental Youth" is scheduled to be released tomorrow. Purchase it.

- Very solid Album

I'm new to The Mountain Goats, but this album certainly rivals the earlier material that I've heard from them. This is a great singer-songwriter album that is easily enjoyed and appreciated. I like the combination of deeply personal tunes along with songs about a wide variety of strange events and creatures (like Tianchi Lake) all backed by simple, yet well-arranged music. John Darnielle's voice can be a bit grating at times, but it also seems to make the songs more real and heartfelt. This is a strong collection of pop-rock tunes for those that appreciate smart, emotional, and melodic music. Favorite Tracks: San Bernardino, Heretic Pride, How to Embrace a Swamp Creature

- Goats

Not since Chumbawamba's Tubthumping, has an album been good...This album may infact be good

- Great songs, great album

Fans of the Mountain Goats' recent turn toward a fuller sound won't be disappointed by this album. After the relatively quiet, downbeat "Get Lonely," the Mountain Goats return with an album full of big hooks and quirky subject matter, ranging from a Chinese monster to the murder of reggae great Prince Far I. Great stuff from start to finish.

- Great

John has done it again. The man is crazy talented and the music just gets better with each listen. Warning: the mountain goats are addictive and may cause you to spend lots of time and money trying to get your hands on everything they've ever recorded.

- ❤️

❤️

- Heretic Pride

awful awful song......there is no more pride to this mountain goat

- Darnielle is ingenious

Few musicans can achieve the dichotomy of despair and joy that Darnielle creates in this album. Epitomized in the songs Heretic Pride, Autoclave, In the Craters on the Moon, and Lovecraft in Brooklyn, the emotional range here is truly amazing; and to have the creativity and guts to put such a potent message of joy in a song about a man being killed is beyond any praise i can give. Heretic Pride is honestly one of the best albums I've ever heard.

- Heretic Pride, Resplendent

The more I listen to these songs, the layers peel back exposing bare bones craftsmanship and expert decision making to integrate cello, violins with each song, while masking it in downbeat or up beat drum tempos whether it is Michael Myers Resplendent, with it's mellodic lyrics and cello accented by a hard pop sounding drums, or the paranoid sounds of screaming guitars with garage-band drums. Though each song stands on it's own, they serve as vignettes of the larger musical narrative of Darnielle's talents as a singer/songwriter and the emotional journey of misfits, freaks and the disfunctional and to find their "Heretic Pride."
