this is the best band of all time hands down. great bunch of songs
Finally, iTunes has some of the Dream Theater songs that it has been previously lacking! Sad thing is that a lot of the songs are misnamed, which has a simple remedy....but not if your a newcomer to Dream Theater. Essentially for the Dream Theater diehard like I, the only things that are of any use are the remixes of "Pull Me Under" and "Take The Time". The latter being (in my opinion) the better of the two in terms of new quality. If you can get past some of the misnames, then this is a perfect collection for someone wanting to dive right into Dream Theater, but not for the diehard (thank god the remixes aren't "Album Only")
Seriously, anytime something is wrong- OH, LET'S GO BLAME iTUNES AND APPLE!!! This is not iTunes' fault! Multiple other digial downloading sources are having the same problem. Most likely, someone at Roadrunner messed up, NOT Apple or iTunes. I believe the same is with Bonus Tracks. However, I still don't understand the whole "No song over 10 minutes on EPs" deal...
the new mixes and remasters are awesome, if you are a dt fan GET THIS ALBUM, although the tracks are not labeled correctly
This album is great, but if you should buy the other albums first before buying this. Although, the remixes and edits make it interesting.
Well, I must say when I first heard of this band, I was instantly hooked. I bought this album immediately. But... now, I've been looking at their other albums. Most of which contain near 3-5 songs included in this album each. So, technically, I'm paying an extra $3-$5 in order to get all the album only songs. Kinda annoying, but definitely worth it all.
First off, the 2007 “remixes” of Pull Me Under, Take the Time, and Another Day completely strip away the reverb from those tracks and dry them up so they sound “up to date”. This ruins those songs immensely. Secondly, where’s Metropolis Pt 1? And Panic Attack? And the Dance of Eternity? Those three songs are considered defining moments of the band’s career, inasmuch as Pull Me Under if not more. What the compilers did choose is hard to argue with, but butchering three Images and Words songs and neglecting three milestone band classics automatically spoils this compilation, along with a totally unnecessary addition of saxes to Through Her Eyes. Listeners would benefit more from beginning off listening to Dream Theater with albums like the aforementioned Images and Words, Awake, and Train of Thought. One positive thing: a clean version of As I Am and an interesting shortened version of Home, otherwise move on.
Were is Lines of Sands, Hell's Kitchen, Honor Thy Father, The Glass Prison, Scarred, Caught in a Web, and 6:00 & The Glass Prison; How could you leave out 6:00 and the Glass Prision?!? Click yes if you agree!
..but then I realized how much the tracklisting was lacking. Because this compilation is directed towards radio-friendly songs and the like, it's missing the songs real Dream Theater fans would appreciate. Instead, we have some good tracks juxtaposed with some mediocre to bad material. The band seems to be avoiding their better works musically in favor of more straightforward and, unfortunately, less interesting material. "Metropolis," "Under a Glass Moon," "Space-Dye Vest," "A Change of Seasons" (okay, maybe an edited version? Other prog bands do that), and not to mention earlier material like "Ytse Jam" should've been included here. Songs like "The Root of All Evil," and "Home," though they are good songs in their own right, are not compilation material. Other songs like "The Answer Lies Within" are just bad. I'm disappointed Dream Theater decided not to create a compilation album true fans would want to buy, but I guess these albums are about drawing in new fans. Nonetheless, this is a disappointing collection.
Heres my idea of what a dream theater anthology should be. 1. Ytse Jam 2 Everything off Images and words (save wait for sleep and learning to live) 3 Everything off Awake except SDV and Voices 4 A change of Seasons (the song no the whole album) 5 New Millenium 6 Peruvian Skys 7 Hollow years 8 Hells kitchen 9 Lines in the Sand 10 All of Scenes from a Memory 11 all of six degrees 12 As i am 13 Endless sacrifice 14 in the name of god 15 Root of all Evil 16 these walls 17 panic attack 18 Octavarium 19 all of Systematic Chaos except for Repentance and Prophets of war im sure theres gonna be more with the new albumn
I think it's great. I wish i had seen the edited version of sacrificed sons, it wasn't album only. Most of the remixes don't change the songs, but PMU is changed 2 actually end unlike the original. I Hav no idea what unfreakable said but if he said fr example, if another day is mislabled and if u buy it, ur really listening 2 TALW, Then he is not smart, all of them r correct. P.S. Endless sacrifice is still album only but u can get the live version as a music video for 1.99!
I love DT, but... Why do we need a Greatest Hits album from them? To me, DT has always seemed to put a lot more work into their ALBUMS, and the singles have always seemed like an afterthought. It makes for an extremely awkward Greatest Hits album, where a lot of the best songs are left out and what's there doesn't flow at all. Dream Theater is known for awesome albums and 10+ minute long masterpieces, not radio hits.
...you're going to disappoint as many people as you'll please. Especially with a band like Dream Theater - a band that doesn't really release singles - all of their fans have their own different highlight lists. With that said, this can serve as an excellent starting point for someone unfamiliar with the band. It has many of their concert staples, and a few bits from their longer compositions (such as Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance and Metropolis pt. 2). They didn't include any of the sections of A Change of Seasons, but most everything else is represented. The reason for a long-time Dream Theater fan to pick this up is the remixes of the Images and Words material. They removed much of the reverb from the tracks and brought some parts to the front of the mix that I hadn't noticed before. Those tracks sound fantastic and are worth downloading individually if you don't purchase the whole CD. There are some edits of some other songs, but they aren't as appealing as the full-length cuts on the original albums. "To Live Forever" is also included, but it's the only B-side on the compilation. I'm giving this only four stars because although it is full of great music from an excellent band, it doesn't have as many incentives for longtime fans as it could. To satisfy the hardcore fans, maybe they'll release a B-side/rarities compilation in the future (or maybe there is one, and I don't know about it).
I started listening to Dream Theater when a friend lent me a cd he had made that had stuff like "This Dying Soul" and "Dark Eternal Night" and "The Glass Prison" on it, and I loved that CD, but THIS CD has opened my eyes to the other side of Dream Theater. They sound a bit like a really good pop-band on some of the shorter tracks, but ALL OF THESE SONGS ARE OUTSTANDING. I love Endless Sacrifice, and Hollow Years is amazing. GO DREAM THEATER. And as for the mislabeling... Oh well, just deal with it u jackasses, u giving this album 1 star makes it look bad, which it certainly isn't!!!
I am a huge DT fan. Go to all their tours and have had the chance to hang out with them before one of their shows in Dallas, so when I say this I don't have any ill will toward them. But this CD does not cut it. There is hardly anything new on here...even the radio edits have all been available. There is only one B-side and that has been exposed before as well. The remastered songs really weren't much different than on the CD except the Kevin Moore keyboards were less powerful so they don't sound so '80s. I bought the CD in the store and it is nice not to have to burn a hits CD myself, but I wanted much more. Also...I wish DT had not recorded that anti-war song on the last album...I am a soldier and I listen to DT for combat motivation, but that song is so commercial with bands like Green Day and Muse that are anti-war anti-Bush. Stop complaining and let the soldiers do our jobs. There is more to Iraq than you ever get on CNN.
You made me buy a 6:40 of I Walk Friggin' Beside You and it turns out to be Disappear... Otherwise, this is a great compilation for DT completists and newcomers alike, though plenty of different (read: better) songs could have been chosen
Good choice for most of these songs, but this is a horrible album... I will never get over such a messily butchered version of Scene Six: Home, and so many hits are left out. I mean, where the hell is Metropolis Pt. 1? What about Under A Glass Moon? I mean, Peruvian Skies gets on, but not these? See, In my opinion, DT already had 2 greatest hits albums out so far... They are called Images & Words and Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From a Memory.
I discovered these guys when I&W was released. A buddy of mine received a copy from the label and said "Give this a listen". At first I was like, its ok. Then I saw them live and had the fortunate pleasure of meeting them. After that I was a fan that gobbled up anything they have produced. If you are new to prog or Dream Theater, this will definitley give you a taste that will leave you wanting more. Even their covers of Iron Maiden, the mighty Met or even their work on "Working Man" (tribute to Rush) speaks volumes to the talent of this quintet. Purchase with no fear!
Great job on the remixes: Labrie's vocals come through clearer, as do all the other parts. It's like high def Dream Theater. Includes one new song, "To Live Forever", that sounds like it's from the Images and Words collection. Only negative is the cuts they made to some of the songs. The long, chaotic and orgasmically oriental guitar solo on "Home" was axed. But on the other hand, "Through Her Eyes" now features a nice sax solo. I thought the purchase was worth it--you really can hear a difference in the sound.
...Well one-third to a half of the songs were mislabeled, but I'm going to buy this album at a store (for my collection), so it shouldn't be a problem. The songlist is amazing, and I love how Dream Theater split the album into two discs - a darker, heavier CD, and a lighter one. For DT and prog fans, or anyone who appreciates carefully crafted and thoughtfull music, this is a MUST buy, but don't get it here! Run to your local music store and pick it up. 4.8/5 for Dream Theater 2/5 for iTunes.
Here's comes Dream Theater with their first greatest hit collection. At least it's not another live set. I guess in between studio albums, this just makes sense. While this is geared to the first time listener to capture the sound of this remarkable group, it still has a few elements for the die-hard fan. The remix's are certainly the key here if you want to see how they are polished up. The one unreleased track 'To Live Forever' would be the reason to buy this if you don't already have a studio mix of it. While the remix's are great, one has to wonder why they chose those songs and maybe not several more from their next couple of albums. I think 'To Live Forever' is included because it is LaBrie's welcome into the band. The song that should have made it onto this collection is 'The Way It Used to Be'. But it's not here and one has to wonder why. Plus I don't understand the logic behind the edits of songs like 'Solitary Shell'. Taking it to the edit form just kills the song overall. But I would surmise it's for the first time listener and nothing more. Fans of this group won't purchase this for edited versions of songs that they already own. I would have loved to see more b-side or unreleased tracks on this collection because I'm sure the band has plenty that have never made it to the final cut. But I still have to give this 5 stars because they're all great songs. So, for those of you who want to get your feet wet with Dream Theater, then this collection is a great way to start.
accurately depic Dream Theater in a "best of" album your going to have to put out alot more discs then just 2. While this an excellent album for people just trying to wet their feet, hardcore fans may find this displeasing, except for the 2007 Images and Words remixes. To be fair to Dream Theater (...and their fans) a best of album would have to include their Epics and even side projects like Mike Portnoy's Super band Transatlantic, or John, Mike, and Jordan's super band Liquid Tension Experiment, as well as solo albums by all the members of Dream Theater. Label's hear me out, if your going to produce a best of album with a fanbase as loyal as Dream Theater's...do it right.
And 21 other pretty cool songs?WHERE ARE THEY?????
You just can't make a greatest hits album for this band... I am NOT saying that you shouldn't buy this, its just that for the "Light Side" of this disc, they could have picked better "light" songs like Under A Glass Moon, Hell's Kitchen, Goodnight Kiss, etc. Also, for the "Dark Side"... At least they HAD "Home" but what is this-It's an EDITED VERSION??? WTF? Home is my favorite DT song and they go edit it into a third of its actual length...........Aghh. Anyway, all these songs are good, except "Home." Get the full-length version, there are no words to describe how amazing it is.
I first heard about these prog-metal rockers from a friend, and i'm amazed at this album. For a greatest hits complation for a band that has ONLY ONE HIT this is surprising! It's just sad that these guys haven't had any other hits than "Pull Me Under." They really deserve another hit!!
Dream Theaters greatest hit cd is alittle different than the norm, but what do they do that ever is normal? The remixed version of the "Images and Words" songs sound amazing! Even the edited version of the tunes are a cool addition. Who needs all the same versions of songs we all already have? This greatest hit cd is a must have for every agressive fan out there!
This is garbage prog-metal with operatic themes. Total 80's garbage for idiots who couldn't score in back in the day. Nerd metal.
This Album is great for everyone and for the long time dream theater fans the remixes are quite a treat. But BEWARE some of the songs are not correctly labeled which makes me even more pissed at iTunes than i already am.
I've been waiting for a Dream Theater greatest hits album, but seeing how I have just about most of the B-sides from being a fan for 15 years, there must be more extras, right? Not really. The Remixes sound more like re-recordings. They don't sound that much better to buy the whole CD. The drums sound better, but that's about it. It's nice to have "To Live Forever" but there are songs that are missing that deserve to be on this CD: 6:00, The Glass Prison, the overture from 6 Degrees of Innter Turbulence, Stream of Consciousness, Learning to Live...... there are too many better songs than this selection. This is almost a play-it-safe selection. Not something that really is indicitive of how good these guys are. The songs here are very good, but they have better "cool" songs. Somehow, I don't think the guys truly picked out this selection. At least I hope they didn't.
First and Foremost, I will ATTEMPT the correct labeling for the incorrect songs: Another Day is actually The Answer Lies Within To Live Forever is Disappear Lifting Shadows Off a Dream is Another Day The Silent Man is To Live Forever Hollow Years is Lifting Shadows Off a Dream Through Her Eyes is The Silent Man The Spirit Carries On is Hollow Years Solitary Shell is Through Her Eyes I Walk Beside You is The Spirit Carries On The Answer Lies Within is Solitary Shell Disappear is I Walk Beside You The listing themselves are right, but the tracks aren't. Hopefully, that helps out. Indeed, though, this is a MAJOR screwup, although not one done on the actual album (if you were to buy it in stores). As for the album itself... I'm rather disappointed. In an attempt to attract the mainstream, they took out of this album what the real fans loved so much. The majority of the songs are cut out to make them shorter- something almost no DT fan wants. Their "Dark Side" disc (Disc 1) is not nearly as heavy, or good, as it could have been. Where's The Glass Prison? This Dying Soul? The same with the "Light Side". Where's Vacant? Wait For Sleep? Space Dye Vest?!? I can understand the Epics being absent, with their length and all, though. And although I can say that the songs on the album are in no way bad, one can't help but feel there could have been more... You're better off starting with Six Degrees, Images and Words, Train of Thought, or the ALMIGHTY Scenes From A Memory. And if you're already a fan, Buying this isn't really worth it, unless you're a diehard fan and want the remixes and edits.
I love DT and this compilation is amazing. Every song is a masterpiece in its in its own right. The album is an Intoxicating journey through the magnificent history of these breathtaking, extraordinary musicians. Yet with each new release, these unparalleled virtuosos manage to tap deeper into the infinite yet mysterious dimension of exquisite, opulent progressive mastery. DTs musical achievements are both legendary and supernatural. While Portnoy is Indeed missed, the compositions continue to assault and intoxicate with relentless sentimentality and unapologetic rage. DTs existence strengthens my will to live; its music never fails to cleanse, refresh and heal my restless heart and soul. Ok, having said that I now ask: WHERE THE HELL IS SPACE DYE VEST? How can they release a compilation of this magnitude and NOT include one of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever written? That is just WRONG! The absence of SPACE DYE VEST from this album was a real anti-climax. who through the individual instruments of these magnificent musicians.
If you like Hard rock/metal, and haven't heard of Dream Theater, listen to this album, you'll wonder where they've been all your life.
...not an album worth getting if you already like them though. This album got my friend into Dream Theater, mainly due to most of the songs being cut (Home is 12 minutes... on this its 5:38.) Instead of having progressive instrumental sections for 6 minutes, that is cut out for more of an album focused on vocals. The song "Lie" originally has a 1 minute solo ending the song yet in this version, it fades out after the vocals end, as does the song "Home" which has an experimental intro -> the part that is on this disc -> more experimental parts. If you know any of the edited songs on this compilation already, don't get this (That would be like buying a fully filled Cheeseburger and then trading it in for a Hamburger with just the meat and buns, very pointless.) ALSO: don't buy this on itunes... Go buy it in a store, when you buy it you get 2 discs... 1 with the "dark" songs which are the more metal tracks (1-11) and 1 with the "light" songs which are the softer tracks (12-22.) It just seems cooler, just like Pink Floyd - The Wall, with its transition in the 2 discs.
Impecables!!! Exelente combinacion de temas...todo un great hits con mayusculas!!!
PMU: Buy the original one from Images and Words. It sounds better. TtT: See PMU. Lie: Very catchy, James Labrie hasn't sounded this good in years. PS: Falling into Infinity was kind of a flop. Home: You might like the extended version if you like this. Misunderstood: I actually like the edit more than the original track. It cuts to the chase. TTTSTA: Heavy and plain crazy. AIA: Probably their greatest song. Buy it. ES: Kinda long, but pretty cool. Very emotional lyrics. TRoaE: A song up there with AIA and Lie. It's part of a series of songs about Alcoholics Anonymous. SS: An okay song about 9/11. Another Day: Again, buy the original. To Live Forever: It's the B-side of the Lie single. Cool. LSoaD: Great bass line, cool lyrics, James sounds great again. TSM: Not that good. HY: Not great either. THE: Emotional, soft, sounds kinda like the 80's radio station, but it's good. TSCA: See THE. SS: Upbeat song about Autism. I like it more than the original. IWBY: Catchy radio-like song, kinda sounds like U2. TALW: Uplifting ballad. Disappear: This song always makes me tear up. It's great.
I was looking foward to buy this album and then the big awakening : most of the songs are labeled wrong! Disappear is I walk beside you, hollow years is Lifting Shadows off a dream and so on... =(
Who THE hell wrote this review. It's okay to have a little slant in a review, but all out bashing a group, whether any skill is possessed, or not, is completely and utterly inappropriate.
If you go to Dream Theaters website, he addresses this issue. This isn't the first time iTunes have got it wrong. That is why on some albums/groups (DT being one of them), I will buy the actually packaged CD (as I did with this one also). Dream THeater is amazing and John is a nce guy....got to meet him during the G3 tour of 2007.
This compilation is great. No only does it put most of DT's best work on here, they used a lot of alternate versions and single cuts. I hate the comp albums where it's just a mix playlist someone put together. If your a true DT fan, you will have all those songs already. So it doesnt leave out the fans. And it gives new listeners an idea of what dt is all about. I reccomend this to anyone
GO TO THESTORE TO BUY THIS!!!! all the songs are mixed up!! i bought it at the store.
