The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys

About Three Imaginary Boys by The Cure Album

Three Imaginary Boys is the debut studio album by English rock band The Cure, released on 8 May 1979 by Fiction Records. It was later released in the United States, Canada, and Australia with a different track listing as a compilation album titled Boys Don't Cry. The record company decided which songs were put on the album, as well as the cover artwork, without Robert Smith's consent. For all Cure albums since, Smith has ensured that he is given complete creative control over the final product before it goes on sale. The Foxy Lady soundcheck, with vocals sung by Michael Dempsey, was not supposed to be on the album, and was removed for the American release. Smith has stated that "songs like Object and World War and our cover of Foxy Lady were Chris Parry's choice". Despite Smith's displeasure with the record, Three Imaginary Boys was well received critically at the time of its release. The album was reissued on 29 November 2004 and featured a second disc of unreleased material, including songs recorded under the band name Easy Cure with Porl Thompson. A one-disc reissue was released on 5 September 2005, containing only the original album.

- Doing my part

to warn the world of this weenie lamo band. James hates mucus like this which can be roasted on sticks.

- Proof "goths" had a sense of humour

My original cassette release is (C) & (P) 1978, a year earlier than what's given here, in '79 an expanded re-issue came out in the states as Boys Don't Cry, which isn't avalable here?!? That version had a few additional tracks, the aforementioned title single + "World War," "Plastic Passion," & "Heroin-heroine" & in shops I've seen re-mastered re-issues with further bonus tracks. On my original, the titles are all given on it as icons or pictograms in keeping with the dry humor of the conceptually obscured cover art band-foto stand-ins which always seemed like a clear Monty-Python-eque post-dada / post-punk sense of humour. Musically, their signature earlier-era moodier-tunes like 10:15 & the title track are here, but also, a sense of their of darker humor with Subway Song & Grinding Halt, which has such a strangely upbeat dancey feeling for cold-war nuclear-winter anxiety, its like Schopenhauer's motto: cheer up, we're all gonna die. So, the cover art feels incomplete without the original icon-image titles; the record as post-modern art object is lost, but there'd be a way to fix it: include the bonus tracks from the re-issued remastered CDs & give a more accurate account of what their early era was like.

- Missing several songs

A version that hasn’t been bowdlerized would be better.

- This is the original album

Your thinking of the American release of "Boys Don't Cry". This is the group's first album. "Foxy Lady", "Object" and "World War" were Chris Parry's (the head of Ficton) choice. Robert has said he hates those songs along with the album cover. The cover of "Boys Don't Cry" was taken from the back cover of this album. It was more of a compilation of the first few singles and 7 songs from this release. Only early copies have "Object" and "World War", replaced by "So What" when it was relased on CD. The deluxe edition which is well worth the extra $5 and has "World War" on it. You can get other other b-sides from "Connect The Dots".

- so what?

where's the original Boys Don't Cry? where's World War???

- Overlooked

My favorite cure album so far. I've only heard three, but this one takes the cake for me. I simply love it. Makes me wonder why not many people talk about this album when I bring up the cure. Seems like everyone only know the hits like "Friday I'm in love" Which are my least favorite cure songs with the exception of "Just like Heaven". I say give this album a listen.

- World War?

This song needs to be on here. And what about the original album art?

- Insane Album

Foxey!! Bummer they took out some good songs- what about artistic freedom of expression? Censorship is way worse than risk of offending the jihad.

- Its Alive!!

Im So Happy they put this album back its The Cures first step and that should never have been tooken down. Thanks alot for putting it back up

- Great Reissue except...

Besides the original songs on the album it is great to hear the demo versions and how the songs developed. But I am disappointed that they removed "Killing An Arab". I guess it was viewed as controversial even though if you know the background of the song it isn't anti-arab. It is a shame. It is the best song on the album.

- ...

I love this album. So punk.

- Such a great album...

It's been a long time since I've had this on vinyl, but I thought Killing an...(I'll be PC here) was on this album. It's not in iTunes at all. I guess it might have become too contraversial, but was it removed from the album? Or I guess it could have been on another album, but I don't think so. Anyway, loved The Cure then and they still rock!

- Great album that took me a while to get into.

The Cure is my favorite band. This is not an album I would listen to regularly. This and Wild Mood Swings would usually get pushed aside for most of the rest of their discography. I didn't fully appreciate this album until the band did their "Reflections" shows where they did this, Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and a lot of the B-sides. from that era of the band. Someone had recorded the first show in Sydney Australia, and I downloaded it, and somehow got hooked on it. It is now one of my favorites. Other than Meathook, the album is flawless. Meathook is dumb. I need this on vinyl now.

- It's a start

My first exposure to the Cure came in 1980 with Seventeen Seconds, so when I went back and bought this release, I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. Object is a great song, and Another Day and the title track would hint at things to come. The rest of this release however is an interesting slice of history, but nothing all that great. The Cure would release nothing like this again.

- Imaginary Tunes

The Cures debut album is a mixture of songs. Some songs are straight post punk like (It's Not You and Grinding Halt) but there is also songs that use the music moods and lyrics to setup imagery (Another Day, Fire in Cairo and Three Imaginary Boys). This album shows hints or is a prelude to what The Cure are trying to achieve artistically.

- I was worried when they took this off...

but also confused. This is such a good album, definitely not their best, but it was their first one. This record should never be missing from any store. "Fire In Cairo", "Three Imaginary Boys", "Meat Hook" and "10:15 Saturday Night" are the best ones in here

- The best.

The best cure album ever. If your a fan, this album is a MUST HAVE!!

The Cure Fundamentals

- What a flashback!

The Cure were the songtrack to my teenage years, when saying you were 'alternative' meant your music style and explained your black attire. Every album was great, but this one started it and and it progressively became a love affair with the music and how it impacted my life during those very funny and angst filled times. Looking back, I'm so glad to have had the quality, talent, and inspiring musicians that today are still together and still one of my fav bands. I remain a loyal luv cat!
